Do I need to unroot to trade my phone it? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

I have that jump program and feel like getting the GS5. I got this GS4 about 6 or so months ago and if I remember correctly (which I don't) I used odin to root it.. Had it rooted for a couple months then decided to put a rom on which was Wicked 5.0 or something. About 2 months ago I put wicked 9.1 on.
I'm pretty sure I saved a recovery before even putting the first wicked rom on, but WTF is up with the way it saves the files, maybe someone can help with this image, but what is the oldest date of these recoveries ?

If I was to go back to just the stock recovery but still rooted, would a t-mobile rep know this? and if they did would it be a problem?
If I did get back to the stock recovery, could I unroot it? I remember buying a triangle app or something ,that reset the flash counter on this phone? does that ring any bells? lol
Thanks

Look at the jump contract. I looked at it briefly when I signed up for it. If i remember correctly there are 3 conditions to exchange your phone.
1. no water damage
2. screen isn't cracked
3. it turns on
I didn't see any sort of refusal of service if the phone is rooted.

The guy told me yesterday that it can't be rooted, he said "we will check" all night last night till like 4am, I was reading and working on getting the GS4 into shape and ready to go.. I followed those directions above that I posted the link for and it worked awesome..
I go and trade my phone in today the guy just made sure it went to the setup screen after you factory reset it.. That was it, lol.
Now its on the GS5 this thing is a beast so far, I love that I can wash it I dropped it into my pool (3 feet deep) for a minute or so and it held up just fine! put it under running water same thing, no water inside the battery compartment! Sure its not worlds better than the GS4, but I don't think I'm gonna rom this one, I will root it eventually because I tether about 15+ gigs a month Well, later all, hope to see you follow me over to the GS5 forums one day.. or maybe wait until the GS6?

To anyone's knowledge, has anyone ever been refused a JUMP upgrade due to a tripped KNOX counter?

It's hard to prove a negative...but I read this board daily. I read every topic regarding trade in adns warrenties.
I have never seen anyone talk about being denied a trade in on XDA due to KNOX.

they don't check
The clerk handling returns/exchange is instructed to check just 2 points:
The phone powers up
The IMEI/ESN is the same as what you claim, they check behind the battery, they don't even check to confirm the software IMEI matches the sticker,

As far as I can tell it's a "no" for now. Anyone aware is this is going to persist or are we still on a "not right now but but they could start checking for KNOX any day now" status?
I have a GS4 and I don't think I'll upgrade until winter at the earliest... But I REALLY REALLY want to root my phone.

What version of android are you using? If you were on 4.3 or lower you could do something like this:

How to brick my epic 4G permanently?

Nope, not a typo - I want to brick my Epic 4G to the point where you can't bring it back via Odin. Even a hardware brick would suffice. Or I'd just like to break it purposefully without physical damage.
I know the first thing you're thinking is insurance fraud, but it's far from that. You see, my Epic 4G is already broken. I'm met with freezes on Android 2.2 ROMs, even the official stock unrooted one. The latest official build has been a problem since the day I flashed it. I
tried to take it to Sprint, but all they did was restore it to Android 2.1 and told me to take a hike. This is absolutely unacceptable. Before I go through the Better Business Bureau, I wanted to see if I could just render my phone inoperable beyond repair so they can give me a proper replacement or fix.
Please let me know if there's any way I can do this as I'm really getting sick and tired of all the issues I seem to be having with any 2.2 build.
Bad idea. Just stock it, and go up the chain of repair until someone with a clue gets to it. These bricked devices piling up lately are going to raise somebody's eyebrows.
Yes I agree with ko. Bad idea to brick it. Take it elsewhere. If it is really freezing on stick roms shoe them. Are u sure your not trying to overclock it and your phone can't handle it?

Well i have bricked my phone a dozen of times, but odin ALWAYS fixes it, if you are having problems with the cellphone just go back to the techs at your local sprint store and say that you are still having problems with it, if maybe helps if you have the total equipment plan since but i bet you have it. Just go to the store and say that it still having problems (all of this without being rooted or running a custom rom) and if you cant show them the issue just tell it does it sometime, after all the customer is always right (or thats the way it should be ~.~)

If you can Odin back then it is not really bricked, more like sponged. Bricked is a dead dead phone. No lights, no charge, no download mode. If he has this "soft brick" or "sponged" condition, the techs will more than likely be able to get him back working. Even though Odin'ing back to a fresh stock may fix his problem.
Ya don't brick it on purpose, just return to stock using Odin go into the sprint store and say its freezing and I'm sure they will attempt to fix it or mist likely will swap it out..

Hey watch it. I'm a tech at a 3rd party store and have a reputation better than the president. If you brought it to a Nexgen, Intouch Wireless, or Mobile Wireless Indirect store (or similar) that has a repair center, they SHOULD replace it free of charge as long as you have TEP (otherwise like someone else said it will be $35). Obviously you're still within the first year warranty so they shouldn't hassle you. Unless you're dealing with a retarded tech.

While k0nane's swoosh is quite humorous, I was thinking more along the lines of this:

[Q] Need advice on replacement

Morning all!!
I need your advice on getting my 4G Touch replaced. My wife and I purchased both our E4GT on December of last year and it looks like mine needs repair or replaced. We did not opt for the insurance which is my issue.
My accelerometer is not functioning correctly so it can no longer tell how I'm holding it anymore and rotates any way it feels like. I have disabled screen rotation, but that doesn't help with the camera app. Most of the time it takes pictures sideways or upside down. I know it's not a software issue as I have run multiple roms and even set it back to a factory rom (unrooted) and still does this.
I have a couple of months left on the one year warranty, but I cannot send it in for repair as, like most folks, I need this phone every day and can't go without it.
Any suggestions would be appreciated!!
Take it to a local Sprint repair center if its able to be repaired they usually get it done in several hours and if it needs to be replaced they order a new one and give your phone back until it arrives. They may charge you $39 though
I assume you have tried a sensor calibration?

It's not that I can't, it's just that my wife and I are looking to buy a house right now. My realtor is calling/texting me sometimes 3 or 4 times a day about seeing a home. In this market, you have to be fast to view one or it might go pending before I get a chance to look and make an offer.
My wife has choose not to deal directly with our realtor and that leaves me as the point-of-contact....go figure!!
I have unrooted and odin'd a stock rom and have an appointment at noon today with my local repair center. I will let ya know how that went. I know there is no water damage as I take very good care of my phone, so it shouldn't be an issue with the warranty.

Identity Crisis! SCH-R760 or SPH-D710?

Hello, I bought a used phone from eBay, like the ones on this section, but I want to root it, I'm not sure what would brick this phone, my problem is that when I boot it up, it says it's a US Cellular SCH-R760, same thing with the "about phone" section of the settings.
But, the battery cover says it's a Sprint phone, and taking off the battery reveals a sticker with the model being SPH-D710.
Did somebody root it? I tried using root checker and it said "Negative"
If I were to root it, what phone would I take the files from?
Thank you, and sorry if this is in the wrong section.
Wow... That's a new one. I would try Framaroot so you don't flash the wrong files. Sounds like you got a refurbished phone of some sort, or somebody took the motherboard from the US Cellular and slapped it into a Sprint body. I personally world trust Settings/About Phone over the sticker tho. Which means you'll have to run a converter. Is your phone activated? Do you have a carrier?

Here you go.
You have a us cellular sch-r760. Whoever tou got it from took the motherboard from the uscellular and put it in the sprint version body. I am not sure if flashing files here would hurt the phone. I do know there is a different website for your phone though. Team us cellular has roms and whatnot for your phone. Unsure of the exact web address sorry. Google will help though. Goodluck

And it's still on GB...eek, yeah I don't think anybody but a couple people can help you out. @diceman1000 and @ps3hacker3 might be able to help if I remember right.
The SCH-R760 is the same as the E4GT less the 4G. Thou should be able to glass any E4GT ROMs, AOSP, NOT STOCK? And they should work. You'll have to use Handcent or GoSMS and manually put in your PP APNs in order for MMS to work though.

It's a refurbished phone that the factory didn't wipe properly. It had been rooted and the factory just did a full wipe. (Someone got lazy)
If it's on 4.3 it's probably got the Knox bootloader, meaning you can't just Odin it back to stock and make it like nothing happened. You can check this by booting into download mode (power and volume down) and seeing if it says it in the upper left hand corner of the screen.
Personally though, since you just got the phone and it's clearly not been properly refurbished, I'd send it back. Even if you can fix the software issue there is obviously something wrong with it because someone has already sent it back and you know it wasn't properly refurbished. So you might run into another problem later.
I'd tell T Mobile to send you a new one, and make it clear that you're not going to pay the $20 for shipping since they sent you a broken phone.

Yup. And you're going to get another refurb too to replace that last one.
The easy was to tell is the label under the battery. If it's a new phone the label looks like this...

If it's a refurbished phone the label is different. It's a little thinner as I recall. (Sorry, I couldnt' find a picture of one.)
The refurb facility is not the manufacturing plant so they have slightly different stickers.
Usually the refurbs are fine. I wouldn't worry about getting the next one. I had a refurbed S4 for a while and it was better than the new one I had originally. (It didn't survive being dropped onto the granite sink in my bathroom, then subsequently the tile floor. But it was better before that!)
You just got a bad one from a lazy worker at the refurb place who didn't do a thorough job. As soon as you get the new one though test it thoroughly. Make sure every system works. Bluetooth, GPS, LTE, GSM, every spot on teh touchscreen, etc etc etc

Root counter? Jump?

Does the D-851 have a root counter on it? I'm new to JUMP and, I saw over on the reddit T-Mobile page that rooting your phone voids the warranty and will cause you to have to pay a deductible if you try to JUMP. I've also seen threads where people say that they have successfully flashed back to stock and have been okay. One or two people say they've even JUMPed with phones running cyanogenmod....
After flashing back to stock I went to dialer, 3845#*851#, tap to "LG RCT", tap "display Result" and is says "not rooted" since I've flashed back to stock. I see no counter. I've also heard of something called QFuze? But can't find much info.
Alot of it depends on who the rep is. The rep is the one that decides if you need to pay the deductible. This is only if you jump. I used to work for t-mobile. If your warranty it or mail in your device by doing things online then reps don't get any day. The g3 can be reverted back to stock and it doesn't have a root checker from what I've read. Which is a huge reason I moved away from Samsung. Tmo has an unlocked bootloader which makes things way easier too. I don't think there is much of a risk. Checking for root is not standard protocol in the jump check process. Just my opinion though, no guarantees, but I think the chances are pretty good with the G3 in getting away with root.

This seems to be similar to what other threads of similar nature are saying. It sounds like as long as I flash my phone back to stock rom, and it's not damaged, I really have nothing to worry about.

I recently did JUMP from the Galaxy S4 to the G3.. I also was rooted with Cyanogenmod.... All I had it to pay is the taxes on the G3... The rep at T-Mobile said depending on your credit score is if they determine if you pay a down-payment or just the taxes...
All the reports I have heard have said that the 8110c kdz file resets the root counter. That might change in the future.
they check only if the phone boots to a normal and no crack screen.
first day launch of G3 i went to the store. my note 3 is rooted and i even told the lady that my phone is rooted. they dont care..
i am a JUMP subscriber

I've used jump twice now and both times the store rep never even turned my device on. I did factory reset it myself but it was still rooted with a custom recovery. The phone just goes back somewhere to be reset anyways. My wife's cousin used to do that and he used to see all kinds of weird stuff on phones but after its reset its stock.
You can put the phone back to stock. Theres a link somewhere on this forum
