Phone won't enter usb mode - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

For whatever reason, my phone stopped recognizing that it is connected to a computer via USB (nothing in the notification pull down menu to start usb mode etc). I was on slim rom, I tried switching to an old wild by night rom and it still has the same problem. Clearly it's not the rom, so I'm pretty confused. Trying to mount in CWM doesn't work either, and odin mode is not recognized on the pc. Charging via usb works.

Either your wire is busted or the solder joints on your port are cracked. Both are easy to repair.

Hrmm.. gotta wait till I get home to test with a different wire. How does one tell if solder joints on the port are cracked?

Visually inspect them. Its also a dead giveaway if no wire will work and nothing else is wrong with the phone.

I did a little more forum digging and found this old thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1344882
Sounds like exactly what happened with my phone (weird car mode that I've never seen before popping up; charges but doesnt connect to usb). Looks like you're right about the usb port. Gonna have to see if I can debride the area somehow...

If you are not experienced with or comfortable doing precision soldering, hit me up. Also shine a flashlight into the port and see if the pins are still in place. Bent pins can cause crazy issues.

Soldering is out of my cabilities, mostly because I don't own a soldering device. I do have access to dental equipment though, so I took a look using some 2.5x mag loupes with a light and I saw some some dust and white corrosion. I used a plastic periodontal probe to scrape out the corrosion, small brush to dust the port, and air syringe to blow it all out. Wamo bamo, it's working again.. hopefully it stays working.

Sweet deal man! Glad you got it all back to normal.

Bleh it was shortlived, or at the very least -- finicky. Seems like I may need to replace the port. Do you have instructions for doing that?

Not instructions, but it does require the ability to take the device apart and some fine soldering skills. Not really easy to make instructions for that. It takes a lot of skill to do it.

While charging the phone does it seem like the micro USB charger just seem to fall out
Yup mine does it too, just takes a light tug and it falls out.
Mines actually pretty snug. Doesn't seen to move much at all on me

I think you are just not putting it in all the way... with mine if I put it in softly it just falls out, but a little beyond that it feels like you are just going to go through the phone but it's like a second layer of safety

Any one have a permanent fix for the Micro usb port? I've fix it so many times the back is getting loose.

Don`t apoxy the back. How are you repairing it? Just curious other members have had this problem as well.

I see I wonder about jb weld if it does not transmit a current it would be perfect for extra support after your soder job, if it transmits current it would be a disaster.
Ok, think it's going to last.
Put a little piece of a small zip tie down in the groove on the case were the usb socket fits into.
Screwed the MB down good, could tell it was a tight fit.
The power button hung up the first few times I turned on and off. But it settled in.
The usb socket doesn't wiggle at all. The solder conection is holding.

Accelerometer work's intermittently?

Hey guys I spilled some apple juice on my phone (I know I'm pissed to) but now my accelerometer works sometimes like ill boot the phone and it will work fine then nothing from another reboot. Its weird. Any ideas?

Probably got wet on the board. Shorted something out. I see this happen all the time at work.
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda premium
Crap thats what i thought. Why is it working on and off then? I figured of it shorted out it would be dead for good (the accelerometer i guess). You think if i take the phone apart and clean up the board I might revive it?

Clean it with some high percentage alcohol, I think its over 91% with a toothbrush after you take it apart. I've seen it work miracles.

Me too. I usually use cotton swabs, alcohol, and canned air. Ill give it a go at work tomorrow. Any good guides on how to take this thing apart

It's probably working until it gets hot enough to expand and then breaks the circuit.

Spend the 20 bucks or so on the kit from Radio Shack. The little guitar pick thing makes taking it apart so much easier. Its worth the investment.

Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda premium
Well it hasn't been working since last night whether the phone is hot or cold but I'm still going t clean it. I'm hoping just the sticky left over apple juice is causing the short and cleaning it will work it out
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda premium
there is just to much everywere. would it be overkill if I let the mainboard and the case (minus the battery) soak in alcohol for like 10 to 20 minutes and then blow dry them?
Probably
With electronics, usually bute force isnt the name of the game..
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda app-developers app
hmm well I just dabbed little drops of alcohol on the internal parts and were the apple juice was and blew it out with canned, and I'm going to let it dry now for a while before I put it back together.
Alright it is dead the accelerometer and the light sensor are not working even after cleaning. Anybody have a doner phone? Ha ha

If you were careful taking it apart and cleaned it good, you may be able to take it in to Sprint and have it replaced. Idk if there is any litmus paper to show it got wet though.

I already tried they wont let me. but something else that's weird, I thought maybe restoring back to stock might work if its something software related to I tried restoring to zv7 with the link in the IRC using lgnpst and lgnpst is not flashing the bootloader or anything for that matter. any ideas why? I can get the phone in download mode and lgnpst does its regular thing, the phone reboots at 67% like normal, then it sits at the 4g LTE logo on the boot animation until it overheats and shuts off. I tried getting into the bootloader and it will not show it. if I hold vol up+vol down+power, it just goes straight to the boot animation from a cold start.

STOCK charging cable keep coming unplugged?...

May I just advise caution to anyone thinking of doing this. The charger should be held in by the prongs locating properly. By bending the metal it stays in place by pushing against the middle pin which is usually made of plastic and could easily snap leaving you with a much more expensive repair than the cost of a new cable

Attention!!! I have found a fix for signal problems!!!

DISCLAIMER I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU RUIN YOUR PHONE. THIS WILL VOID YOU WARRANTY UNLESS YOU FOLLOW MY INSTRUCTIONS. I CANNON GUARANTEE THAT THIS WILL WORK FOR YOU. I'M JUST SHARING THE INFORMATION
OK so as you have probably read in the title. I have found a fix for signal problems on the E4GT! All you have to do is take the back door off the phone. No do you see those stickers on the back. Those are covering up the antennas peel those stickers off DON'T throw them away stick them to something so that you could reuse them and stick them back on the phone for issues if you have to take it to the Sprint store. I have mine stuck to the back of the back door mine still fits on bcuz I have the extended battery.
After you have peeled those off you should notice that you're already getting a bit better signal. You should get a lot faster GPS lock that's what I noticed and it stayed locked on.
Now the next thing you can do is your choice. What I did was get a piece of tinfoil and folded it a couple of times and then cut a place for the camera I'll provide a pic of what mine looks like.
Now stick that piece of tinfoil on there and snap the back of the phone back on and you should be good to go.
Ever since I did that it worked miracles. I no longer have that big of an issue with signal on this phone.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Genius. So you are saying pull off the protective elements of the antennas then short them all together with tinfoil!? For any other people reading you can destroy your antenna this way. They are fine tuned to pick up certain frequencies. Please do not do this. Putting tinfoil will not help. The same thing goes for those stickers you put under your battery. Placebo effect. Op while your at it try sticking a wire into those ports on the back of the phone. Im sure it wouldnt hurt. DISCLAIMER-STICKING ANYTHING IN THOSR PORTS WILL LIKELY SEVER THE CONNECTION FOR WHATEVER THAT PORT WAS GOING TO. ITS HAPPENED BEFORE. ALREADY TESTED DONT DO IT.
sent from my Provari with a mini rda!
Its not actually shorting them. They are protected ribbon antennas. What the foil more than likely does is direct the signal in a way. It may help direct the signal either to the phone or away. Either way, this is still not advisable to do. There are exposed components like antenna interfaces that could be damaged.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Gray are they protected when you peel off the black cover like he suggested? I havent had a need to pull that off. So I dont know if its bare under there or not.
sent from my Provari with a mini rda!
Yep. They are like flex cables.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
So does this actually work or not? I'm not gonna chance severing network connections with tinfoil if it doesn't lol
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
It works just fine for me it will only sever the antennas if you take the back off a lot I've noticed a boost of about 3 bars
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Oh and if it doesn't work you can replace the housing on the phone cuz that has the antennas in it. The parts are on eBay for like $12-$15
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
The housing is not a concern. It is the exposed antenna interfaces on the motherboard. If those get shorted in any way, you will never have a signal again.

I haven't had a problem. The only way it could get shorted is if I actually attached metal to the contacts
