Are you all content with Samsung update performance? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

This phone is less than 6 months away from reaching it's two year anniversary. How do you think Samsung did with keeping up with updates.. did it exceed your expectations?

I am because we have jelly bean leaks. Otherwise I think they do fine. My last phone was the atnt captivate and that never got updates like this phone.

I agree. I came from a device that updated once in the year + that I had it. And like the other poster said, we have jb leaks. Just wait until the source drops, it's going to be cu-razy up in here! I think it is definitely keeping up with the times. And with folks on here improving it everyday, it's only going to get better.

I had a Samsung moment that they were horrible with releasing updates in an acceptable manner. I don't know about other Samsung phones but this one has been pretty good with updates. Yes they always seem to release sprint updates last when compared to all the other carriers, but they are improving. Probably because this phone is so popular, even with slight variances in hardware between carriers. Blame cdma I suppose.

Be glad you dont have an lg. The optimus g just went EOL and its only been out like 6 or 8 months lmao. And samsungs updates are pretty fast the s3 and note2 on sprint were the first to be updated in the US

My phone shipped with GB and its now officially on ICS so that is only 1 update. I hardly call 1 update good progress. The rest of the so called updates are maintenance releases and bug fixes. The JB leak is nice but not official. Our great devs have kept me happy with lots of great roms.

I got one for work i dont use, was cruising the forum and saw its listed as EOL in sprints database already. That's why I hate LG they drop support faster than you can activate the phone. I'm honestly kind of surprised it even got updated to JB it was on ICS til the end of February.

It's true 6-10 months from release they EOL the flagship device's. I don't know why they even bother selling em if they don't want to support em. Not to mention their software is always buggy as crap and they never even release a maintenance update to address even the simple bugs.

Samsung performance here is a breath of fresh sir

Coming from a lesser provider, with a mid level smartphone, I am very pleased to have my eg4t. They may not hand out the updates at the speed of light, but we do get them. I give samsung (in regards to this phone) a . Imho, you may not understand what's good unless you understand what's bad. Comparing this phone and its designers to my previous phone is like comparing a hot dog to a Delmontico.

I know this is a Sprint thread, but it makes me sad that Boost/Virgin is always a few software steps behind Sprint. Punishment for being prepaid I suppose? Before flashing Goddly's WoR I was on FL24. Not a bad kernel, but Google now is worth the update for sure. Those cards are handy so I'm glad Samsung didn't give up on this phone before making a software update for this phone including that feature.

At this rate, I think most of their customers are probably rooted already. Better support here than vzw techs can ever provide!
Fact is that vzw wants to make sure their crap doesn't affect HTC's update before releasing it. As such, we all now how much crap they dump on us, so expect to wait a lot longer!

OK but I would say about 80% of people don't root. I know that is just an estimate but from experience it seems reasonable to me. So, say vzw sold 100,000 inc2s. That would be 80,000 people that might call them if the update changed something or something was broken in it. That's a lot of time for vzw service reps

I am not saying you are wrong, but my original point is that ICS is on the Incredible S, (which I think is the same phone unless someone tells me differently) and it is fine. If it was such an issue, Verizon would never release an update on any phone ever... because something can always go wrong and often does. The one way they truly know there are issues is to release an update, listen to feedback and send out bug fixes. What we "think" we know is that Verizon has had this update, since at least August if not earlier and they are sitting on it. I don't believe one bit that they are worried that this update might break something, Maybe I am a conspiracy theorist, but I think they are holding off hoping more people update to newer phones. Look at the Galaxy Nexus. JellyBean 2 or 3 months ago and Verizon just updated it about a week ago. The Galaxy Nexus is going on a year old and if they can get people to upgrade, they can also get people into this ridiculous share everything plan. I just don't think it has anything to do with them making this update perfect, because that would not follow how they have handled updates up until now...

HTC has always done from my knowledge. Oh, if you do get the OTA update, then I hope you get good coverage. Last time I did an OTA update, it took two and a half hour to download like 180 MB at full bars.

agreed, not to mention if bugs arise from the ota or post ota (that werent caught in testing or werent thought to be a big deal) then they have to potentially release more incremental updates that cost more money
i dont know exactly how the contract stuff works, but im assuming verizon paid for ics updates from htc for the tbolt and inc2 (since there are debug builds) but might be able to cut their losses by not actually releasing it...if they feel that it doesnt benefit them by releasing it
the tbolt not getting updated makes sense actually since it was released 3/11, and that puts the 20 month on contract update window for those early adopters within the next month or two
i dont see verizon doing anything to lessen the chances those users upgrade....and a new OS just might do that
inc2 was released about 6 weeks to 2 months later, but same theory applies
not to say the update still *wont* happen...but every week that its not out id say significantly drops the chances of it
now that doesnt get htc off the hook for chinese inc2 kernel source...which by my count is approaching (if not passed) their own 120 day window (which techinically by my interpretation is not legal anyway) for releasing it

actually htc has been releasing (for the first time i can remember) the ics updates for the msm7x30 phones on htc dev as RUU's rather than ota's as of late
without looking im pretty sure they did this for the desire s, rhyme, and the more recent inc s updates....they seemed to have stopped ota's through carriers for it
i guess their reasoning is something along the lines of "well the general public wont take the upgrade, so less support" and since its released through htc dev anyway i dont think they have to support it...its more like "here it is, have at it"
This will make the various ICS ROMS for DINC2 much better, since now they will be based on our phone instead of something like our phone.

It makes no mention of any devices other than international models. Samsung, however, usually ports the updates over for other models and if the carrier won't accept the update samsung will just drop the source and a straight from them update you can grab off the site. This time tho you can almost guarantee sprint will accept all of the updates based on softbanks track record of updating devices for 24 months if possible.

Softbank has been good about updating out to 24 months, mostly because unlike americans, the Japanese don't live in a disposable society. They re purpose things, hand them down, recycle and resell them etc. With the softbank/sprint merger I would see softbank pushing for continued updates as well as sprint wanting the continued updates to give them even more of an edge over their competition. Vzw tends to eol device's after 6-12 months, whereas if sprint continues updating out the full contract it will entice more people to sign a contract since their device's wont be outdated halfway in.

And GSM vs CDMA but that's controlled mainly by the modem.bin and a few files in the rom itself which aren't a huge deal for samsung to port. All of our software has been ported from the International version and they even leave alot of the inactive code behind.

i know i won't be jumping ship for some time, i got away from verizon because of my usage isn't "unlimited" and i don't need to spend that much money on upgrades/contracts, so i'll be with this phone and my wife will be as well (probably until it dies)

If you click back through to the source of the story, they only list the international models, not the carrier specific models. There is no way to know if Sprint will actually make a release of anything. Based on the device being released just last fall, I'd expect more updates, but I'm never assuming anything until a release has a Sprint model number or RDFs start leaking out.

If Samsung can still be working on the outdated Sprint S2 perfecting Jellybean I don't see why they won't work on Keylime for the Note 2 or S3. Probably the last major updates these two devices get but I can see it coming. After all it seems like trying to stay up with updates is what Samsung has been aiming for the past few years. Didn't the Sprint S3 get JB first in the U.S.? I maybe wrong. I can't search it now since I'm grocery shopping with the old lady.

Lol. One of the many, many reasons why I won't but htc ever again! But again like I said the sprint epic touch is one is the last to get jelly bean. It still hasn't but the rest of the world had so yeah I wouldn't and don't expect 5.0 for us sooner than others. It simply won't happen. Never has. But I'm good with the many leaks I'm used to. Hope it continues.

Every phone I have had with Sprint going all the way back to the Samsung Moment was incredibly slow at getting updates.
Well get key lime pie for our l900's we might be last to get it but who cares. Even if sprint don't officially release it, our talented devs can hook us up with some anyways.

Very true. But lately Sprint has been on a roll when it comes to updates. At least we get updates faster than big red phones. Definitely looking forward to see what more amazing things this phone can do.

How are we going to be last? I believe the galaxy S 2 has jb already on sprint. Not officially but team sextape hooked it up. It works amazing on my epic touch. People on the other carriers are still waiting. And like I said earlier the Sprint galaxy s3 received JB first as I recalled. I know sprint and samsung came out with updates late in the past, yet, you can't ignore their recent efforts.

Yes I totally agree with you. Team sextape is amazing and has blessed us with multiple builds on our e4gts But, multiple s2s around the world in many different regions have already had this update pushed out by way of OTA and WE HAVE NOT. Hence why we are last. And will always be LAST. Even Canada has pushed it out and Sprint has not. We only make up so many users on Xda. Most users do not even know what sextape is lol. So that's why we are saying we are last... Because we ARE!

II see your point but I was comparing Sprint to other Us carriers. When it comes to international updates we are far behind unless you have an IPhone. Either way Sprint is getting better when compared to other us carriers.
Agreed. Sprint has gotten better as far as in the US. And like we have mentioned.. We have sextape lol. I've had jelly bean on my e4gt since November of last year. Who the hell knows when it will actually get pushed now with the talk from Sammy about 4.2. But leak they should so for us it really doesn't matter.

Any word on premium features

Any word on premium features coming to the phone after s4 release. I'm not blown away with s4, so I might try to make it one more phone cycle.
Also, any way to get a bit more out of the camera? That's been my biggest disappoint with the phone. I know the s4 has a better sensor, but from what I'm reading, it's processing is not stellar.
Cheers

I picked the wrong day to stop sniffing glue
Had no idea today was release day. Can't wait for it to post, or of course to come ota.
Thanks.
Kind of cool that Sprint is releasing this on S4 day. Its in their best interests, since very very few S3 users will upgrade...just some of the devs and fanboys, I suppose.
Once I get it, I could care less about the S4.

Also, the S3 is the last phone to support SVDO (simulataneous voice and 3G data)
At least from the looks of it anyway, seeing that the S4 and HTC One only have SVLTE

All phones have SV4G/WiFi be they LTE or WiMax. And yes SVDO is going the way of the dodo as the new 1x-advanced band will allow for SV3G without the added hardware.

I like to break stuff!
Yes, but as of now, 3G is everywhere LTE isn't (and for a long time to come for a lot of people). Some never even saw WiMax in it's lifespan.

Yeah but the thing is, when its added at the source level (Java code thats then compiled into all the Touchwiz apps and framework) it tends to be much more stable than if we hack it in

I am done with Samsung...they say October. .but really mean December.
And then the US carriers have to test and bloat it...so we are looking March next year!!!!
I am buying the next Nexus and noting but Nexus from now on.

Agreed. Goodbye Samsung. It's pathetic that its going to 2014 before a phone released in October 2012 gets a software update. You've lost me as well.

More like January or Feb, I'd say or maybe never...at least for the Sprint variant. It isn't in Sprint's interest to push updates unless the other carriers do. Of course Samsung wants to get these updates moving because they want the public to feel they'll be supported if they purchase a Samsung branded device but brand loyalty isn't in Sprints interests unless the brand is Sprint and that of course is usually maintained at the end of a very thin thread as it is.
As for the possibility of receiving the 4.3 update. I'm always excited about OTA updates because updates play a fairly big role in future versions of Android. The more updates there are the more well understood it is what the public wants/needs from future versions because of the broader spectrum of users providing feedback.
For my own personal device...I don't care. I run what I want on my device anyway regardless of whatever Samsung/Sprint/Google push. I don't give a rats ass about having a "pure" Android experience or being the first to get the latest version (no offense to the Nexus fans) either. I want my device dirty and nasty with a big moustache. I don't want be like one of those creeps that hangs around the strip clubs but never pays for a lap dance...I'm in the champaign room and let me tell you there is more going on in there than the song says. Why do you think I'm hanging around here? Trick it, brick it, fix it, trick it and brick it again...that's what it all about.

a million times, this.. love the removable battery and storage but not sure if it's worth the [email protected]!%
Yea don't really care because Google separated their core services from the operating system so most of the really great feature are now pushed through Google rather than being a part of a new os version.
Android updates aren't as feature rich anymore.

To the ones complaining who are you going to then? Unless its a Google phone it will be the same across all manufacturers. At least we have a date. Samsung actually announces all devices that will be upgraded at the same time unlike others like HTC who just tells u that their it phone of the moment will be upgraded while the rest get lost in forgotten land. Samsung actually has been the best non Google manufacturer with updates to their Galaxy line..

Pretty sure that you're missing the point.
The updates that we all are anxious for are system updates that ROM devs can work with, make better ROMs for us all. Definitely worth "complaining" about.
That other thread is about a fault where the phone thinks it needs a software update, but not really, or the update in question is actually not desirable for whatever reason.
Welcome to XDA.

I've been thinking long n hard about that, as an option. I do love my Note2, with the exception of the plastic, it's a badass device. But I don't actually use the pen as much as I thought I would. So taking a long look at the HTC Mega (?), and hoping that it makes it to the US... I allow myself a new phone every year, it being a hobby I indulge myself in, and I always buy outright, no ETF charges...
