Re: Who's getting 5.0...?
What?! I thought 4.1.2 would be the EOL for this phone. I'm surprised. I'm guessing the update from 4.1.2 to 4.2.2 will be pretty easy for Samsung. Either that or they are going to extend the 18 months up to 24 months.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium

WOW! samsung will make costumers so happy if they do this! It will give me a reason to stay happy with my current skyrocket.

Re: Who's getting 5.0...?
At the rate we move for US updates you wont see 4.2.2 until October or later this year. I hope im wrong. Prove me wrong Samsung and sprint.

i'm very happy with 4.1.2 update, it will tide me over until we start seeing leaks of 4.2.2 on this phone, talk about support, i'm really liking my jump from sony/motorola to sammy!

It makes no mention of any devices other than international models. Samsung, however, usually ports the updates over for other models and if the carrier won't accept the update samsung will just drop the source and a straight from them update you can grab off the site. This time tho you can almost guarantee sprint will accept all of the updates based on softbanks track record of updating devices for 24 months if possible.

Softbank has been good about updating out to 24 months, mostly because unlike americans, the Japanese don't live in a disposable society. They re purpose things, hand them down, recycle and resell them etc. With the softbank/sprint merger I would see softbank pushing for continued updates as well as sprint wanting the continued updates to give them even more of an edge over their competition. Vzw tends to eol device's after 6-12 months, whereas if sprint continues updating out the full contract it will entice more people to sign a contract since their device's wont be outdated halfway in.

Because of the uniqueness of our hardware configuration I would be surprised if we got this update. It will also be interesting to see how many people with stick with the s2 once the s4 is available or the nexus 5

The E4GT hardware is only unique when compared to the other US variants of the Galaxy S2. The E4GT compared to the international model are basically the same except we don't have NFC.

And GSM vs CDMA but that's controlled mainly by the modem.bin and a few files in the rom itself which aren't a huge deal for samsung to port. All of our software has been ported from the International version and they even leave alot of the inactive code behind.

i know some will jump ship to the latest and greatest, but i think this community will still grow this year. with Ting, virgin, boost...and other cheaper alternatives picking up this phone, also with the galaxy s3 mini (basically our phone/s2) our hardware is still very much good to go!
i know i won't be jumping ship for some time, i got away from verizon because of my usage isn't "unlimited" and i don't need to spend that much money on upgrades/contracts, so i'll be with this phone and my wife will be as well (probably until it dies)
still loving gb27 and i suspect we will see some good benefits from 4.2.2 as well

Right now it's just miguel and me lol. There really is no group to join just the 2 of us. I've been working on some Roms for the note 2 and he's gonna be my tester and graphics guy, he has some cool ass homescreens which he maes the uccws for which we'll use in the roms and mods. You want in its fine by me just ask miguel im sure he'll be fine with it too. We thought the "team whatever" team name thing was kind of played out so we decided to do Son's of Android and gonna use the Son's of Anarchy logos as templates for the Son's of Android logos.

So I wonder if the e4gt will even still see a 4.1 OTA or would they hold out even longer and just drop 4.2 to the public? Makes more sense to me that they would only push one OTA.

If the i9100 gets it, so will we. If not officially, somebody will port 4.2.2 TW here. Either way, 4.2.2 source for i9100 will be immensely helpful for our devs, particularly kernel devs.

I've also had the Vibrant. Sammy took a while to release official updates for it, but they did leak a very large amount of roms and the dev community was excellent. The biggest draw back of the Vibrant for me was the GPS and lack of led flash. Other than that it was an excellent phone in its time.TRUST ME SAMMY WILL RELEASE THE SOURCE FOR THIS PHONE AND THE DEV COMMUNITY WILL BE EXCELLENT FOR THIS PHONE.

To be honest this phone isn't my first choice I wish T-Mobile would of skipped the galaxy 2 and came out with a aws galaxy note. That probably would save gave T-Mobile millions of customers. Also gave me a reason to sell my galaxy tab 8.9 lol. Telus version comes the 19 all we can do is hope.
we'll definitely see the source
personally owning several Samsung phones, all of them having great support from both the community and from samsung
they could act faster if they had less devices on the market, but ... insanely enough they have like at least 6 version of every main line, that slows down their release process
just need patience
I think the mistake was realized with the vibrant. I believe they know and support what their customer base wants. They are a strong competative force and want to keep their customers happy. We will see frequent updates and root and massive mods.

I really think the vibrant thing was more tmobiles fault and not Samsung. I say this because there were so many leaked builds for gingerbread. If Samsung never intended to release the upgrade then why would they spend all that time making different builds. I see Samsung supporting this phone for a good while. This is their baby and that new prime is google's baby. The focus for Samsung will continue to be making touchwiz better.

Possible official jellybeans in your E4GT's future?

Disclaimer:this is coming from an employee at a smallish Sprint store, so please know that it's far from confirmed.
So yesterday I was at the Sprint store upgrading to the S3, and I was asking about the S3's JB update. After he told me that it's for sure coming soon(non help on when), and while he was porting my sister's number to my E4GT, he started to tell me that the E4GT would be getting JB, and that Samsung had told their store this information. The lady at the counter next to his had agreed with that he had just told me. I was given no time frame either, just that the device will be getting it.

I was kinda thinking that. The same guy and lady both said that Sprint would not be getting the Note 2, when they've personally announced that they are and even had a hands-on with the Sprint device in new york. Seriously, it's a point of competition against Apple. You'll probably see even longer support as they get closer to a standard build for most phones; one of the biggest reasons for delays on our device is the fact that more changes are needed.

I for one think it is a completely different phone. It has a whole different feel from the S2, it's faster and lighter, bigger screen, that physical home button. My sister had me use her upgrade on the first to buy a new phone anyways so she would get my S2. So I still have my own upgrade to use, which probably will go towards the Note 2. On AT&T. I'll be switching once my contract is up in December.

If you click back through to the source of the story, they only list the international models, not the carrier specific models. There is no way to know if Sprint will actually make a release of anything. Based on the device being released just last fall, I'd expect more updates, but I'm never assuming anything until a release has a Sprint model number or RDFs start leaking out.

If Samsung can still be working on the outdated Sprint S2 perfecting Jellybean I don't see why they won't work on Keylime for the Note 2 or S3. Probably the last major updates these two devices get but I can see it coming. After all it seems like trying to stay up with updates is what Samsung has been aiming for the past few years. Doing so good at it I just finished reading a forbes article were even they give props to Samsung for keeping up with updates better than others. On another note I'm tempted to get an S4 after reading about the gaming capabilities. Opinions?

I had a Samsung moment that they were horrible with releasing updates in an acceptable manner. I don't know about other Samsung phones but this one has been pretty good with updates. Yes they always seem to release sprint updates last when compared to all the other carriers, but they are improving. Probably because this phone is so popular, even with slight variances in hardware between carriers. Blame cdma I suppose.

No complaints here have listened to others belly ache especially eye phoners and AT&T about no updates.

I got one for work i dont use, was cruising the forum and saw its listed as EOL in sprints database already. That's why I hate LG they drop support faster than you can activate the phone. I'm honestly kind of surprised it even got updated to JB it was on ICS til the end of February.

It's true 6-10 months from release they EOL the flagship device's. I don't know why they even bother selling em if they don't want to support em. Not to mention their software is always buggy as crap and they never even release a maintenance update to address even the simple bugs.

Satisfied but only because of sextape and his leaks.

Yup
Samsung performance here is a breath of fresh sir
Coming from a lesser provider, with a mid level smartphone, I am very pleased to have my eg4t. They may not hand out the updates at the speed of light, but we do get them. I give samsung (in regards to this phone) a . Imho, you may not understand what's good unless you understand what's bad. Comparing this phone and its designers to my previous phone is like comparing a hot dog to a Delmontico.

I know this is a Sprint thread, but it makes me sad that Boost/Virgin is always a few software steps behind Sprint. Punishment for being prepaid I suppose? Before flashing Goddly's WoR I was on FL24. Not a bad kernel, but Google now is worth the update for sure. Those cards are handy so I'm glad Samsung didn't give up on this phone before making a software update for this phone including that feature.

They released JB alongside sprint. They have not been a few steps behind as far as I know.

You were right, I found the GC01 release days later and gave it a run for awhile. So, I remove my previous comment about Boost.

Any word on premium features

Any word on premium features coming to the phone after s4 release. I'm not blown away with s4, so I might try to make it one more phone cycle.
Also, any way to get a bit more out of the camera? That's been my biggest disappoint with the phone. I know the s4 has a better sensor, but from what I'm reading, it's processing is not stellar.
Cheers

I picked the wrong day to stop sniffing glue
Had no idea today was release day. Can't wait for it to post, or of course to come ota.
Thanks.
Kind of cool that Sprint is releasing this on S4 day. Its in their best interests, since very very few S3 users will upgrade...just some of the devs and fanboys, I suppose.
Once I get it, I could care less about the S4.

I agree. I have one more year on my contract and my S3 is in good condition. No hurry to drop full price in a S4 aka S3s lol

Also, the S3 is the last phone to support SVDO (simulataneous voice and 3G data)
At least from the looks of it anyway, seeing that the S4 and HTC One only have SVLTE

All phones have SV4G/WiFi be they LTE or WiMax. And yes SVDO is going the way of the dodo as the new 1x-advanced band will allow for SV3G without the added hardware.

Yes, but as of now, 3G is everywhere LTE isn't (and for a long time to come for a lot of people). Some never even saw WiMax in it's lifespan.
Sorry if I didn't read this correctly, but we just get multi Window?

Yeah but the thing is, when its added at the source level (Java code thats then compiled into all the Touchwiz apps and framework) it tends to be much more stable than if we hack it in
