Not sure if this a ROM, kernel, or hardware problem but lately my phone has started to discharge if I'm using it on the charger. It'll charge normally but when I start using it, it gets hot and I lose battery. I'm running the latest stable vanilla rootbox with ktoonz kernel.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
That sounds normal to me. If you're using more than you draw, you'll lose instead of gain and the battery will heat up even more.

It's just math and physics.
If you are gaining, say 1A per hour and using it at a higher rate you will necessarily lose charge instead of gaining it.
Anyone's phone will do the same, that's just how batteries work. They heat up if you're putting them through a lot of stress - like continuously putting energy into it while taking it away at the same or higher rate.
If you want to continuously use the phone, buy a set of spare batteries and rotate them in and out.

Might be your usb cable/voltage output/ whatever u use to charge ur phone. Not enough power to charge it fast enough when you are using it.

+1 on this. Try killing background processes and wait for battery to keep up with usage. Sometimes battery can't keep up with active processes..

I'll give that ROM a try, i wasn't experiencing it with the stable release of rootbox before the current one. What kernel are you using?

i had the same issue and I just switched cables, seemed like mine had some loose wiring or something and charged hella slow. so maybe check your cable first, switch chargers and then look and see if that helps

I'd try another cable too. On stock rom I had no discharge while charging issues so there is no reason you shouldnt be able to charge normally again.
Also check the usb port on the phone. If it's dusty try blowing into it. Check that it isn't loose also.

You could have picked one up for free at the Sprint store. I just exchanged two batteries, mine and the wife's, they didn't even check me in or look at the batteries. You're right, though, a new battery makes a huge difference.

Maybe adapter would be okay but others ones have different voltage they put out. Like a BB charger I use is 1A and the stock Samsung is 750mA
If I'm not mistaken ?

So I have notice that charging my phone takes really long using out of box charge and cable. I had 15% when I plugged it in 3 hours ago and now that I go and get it it's just at 50% :banghead: Any ideas if this is normal or if I should contact Sprint or Samsung for a replacement?

You're probably running the stock ROM, right?
Stock ROM uses software to limit to 2A wall charger to only input 500mA to charge the battery at 5V

It all depends on how you use your phone. If you have a bunch of apps synching, terrible reception, and the screen on the brightest setting all the time you most likely won't get good battery life. I'm more than happy coming from the Nexus 4 though. That phone had horrendous battery life.

I just set up my galaxy s 4 to do the same, I'll try it for a few days. I just use tasker to set it to turn off internet unless I have an app open which requires it.
You can set it to turn on internet and sync at intervals too.
I didnt really change anything. Shut off all features. Brightness like 25%. But I did underclock to 1.3ghz. Which stilll ran really smooth.

ohh well dont worry about it if during the day your phone last at least 10 hours of overall use then dont worry ...but if the battery drains quickly then it might be the ROM, or your battery or multiples widgets are running all day
Your phone should not get very hot (if at all) while charging.
Two main reasons this will occur
1. Wrong voltage on AC charger (if you're not using stock)
2. Rom/Kernel issues
I've definitely experienced my phone getting hot when streaming HD video or playing cpu/gpu intensive games for a while.

That is perfectly normal. Thats where the processor is situated. It is normal for the CPU to reach temps of around 70 degrees under heavy usage. As long as the phone isnt shutting itself off because of overheating you are fine!
These phones tend to get hot at times, if it is hot all the time then you have an issie.
