Hi Nexus community.
I changed from se neo v to galaxy nexus maguro.
I bought the phone used and it come with purity 4.4 and purity kernel. I don't remember kernel version.
Before neo I used a galaxy mini. From that time I know that kernels can be flashed with cwm while at Sony phones you can't.
I did some reading at the stickys here at galaxy nexus forum.
I wanted to test a new kernel and downloaded purity v30 kernel. I entered cwm and installed the downloaded zip. After that I wiped dalvik. Now the phone don't boots. All I get is the Google font and than the phone stays black.
I have got the feeling that the flashed kernel doesn't fit to purity Rom v4.4.
Please help me solve my problem.

Purity Rom 4.4 is android 4.1.2 based, but the kernel you flashed is for 4.2.2 roms, so I would suggest to flash newer Rom, or older kernel.

Thx. So my feelings were correct. The phone has got cwm 6.0.1.0 installed. I search for an option to mount the internal storage but found nothing.
Which kernel is purity 4.4 compatible?
As I can't reach my internal memory how can I flash a kernel. Via fastboot, adb?

You can find anarkia kernels under nexus android development.here is the link for older kernels: http://beta.androidfilehost.com/?a=show&w=files&flid=2282
Purity 30 is 4.2.2 based, older purity kernels are 4.2.1 based, as could be found at the link.
I am using twrp recovery for flashing kernels and have no problems with finding internal memory files...so try to look for twrp.

Yeah cwm founds the internal memory, no problem here too.
What i mean is, i dont now how to connect to the phones internal memory at the moment. On my neo i had a external memory card which i don't have at my nexus any more.
So i must put the needed kernel to internal phones memory to flash it via cwm.
I havent installed any drivers yet to my win 7 pc. I have now downloaded gnex toolkit 10.1 and will install.

Awesome! So the source was released already? Nice to know
Built this with my old Core I7 920 I bought in 2008
This has the SU binary, you can type su in the terminal and escalate. Should be a matter of just downloading or flashing the superuser app to have it in the gui.

I've been playing with a few of the kernels available for 4.2.x so far and wanted to get back to the stock kernel in between testing kernels out. Also good for those who may have accidentally flashed a 4.1.2 kernel. This is a flashable CWM 4.2 Galaxy Nexus JOP40C kernel. Tested and working on my stock/rooted 4.2/4.2.1 GNex. As always, flash at your own risk.
Thanks to kalo86 for providing the AOSP ROM 4.2 zip where the boot image came from. :good:

Thank you. This is definitely very helpful for people like me who aren't aware that custom kernel wouldn't be backwards compatible.
However, I'm using nexus 7, just wondering how could I extract the stock kernel from the nexus 7 factory image?
(I understand that this isn't a nexus 7 post but I'm just asking a general question on how to get the stock kernel hope that's ok)
I assume this kernel wouldn't work for my device either?
Thanks in advance.

Good question. I will create a stock kernel flash for the Nexus 7 (as I have one as well) and post it up there in the N7 XDA forum.
Also, the kernel is the boot.img file located in the zip for ROMs. You can fastboot install it, or make it into a CWM file which is good in case you don't have a computer with ADB nearby. Link to N7 Stock kernel:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34254473
Thanks!
Thank you for ur reply. Definitely gonna save me lots of time!
How do you make it a cwm file? Just zipping the .img file?
Also, I can't seems to boot into cwm recovery without a toolkit is that normal for installing an incorrect custom kernel?

If you want to revert to your old kernel, search for the zip you flashed (of your rom), take out boot.img and paste it into your adb/fastboot folder, reboot your buzz to bootloader, connect to pc and get a fastboot usb status on your bootloader, check connection with pc with cmd -
HTML:
fastboot devices
If it's recognized, head over and type
HTML:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
Else, if you have a nandroid backup of when you started using the rom, head to advanced restore and restore the boot partition.

Somewhere in the forums is a copy of the official 4.4.2 files that you can flash with RSDLite. {search box!}
Once you've updated to 4.4.2 using the official release you can then Fastboot flash your TWRP/CWM and start life a-new with KitKat Roms. **MAKE SURE that you get a version of TWRP/CWM that is compatible with the new Kernel and OS. Kit Kat requires a different recovery.
As a side note, due to the changes in Recovery systems for KitKat I have found that sometimes during the big update flash it gets weird and may give you an error. If that happens ... flash a second time.
