I've been playing with a few of the kernels available for 4.2.x so far and wanted to get back to the stock kernel in between testing kernels out. Also good for those who may have accidentally flashed a 4.1.2 kernel. This is a flashable CWM 4.2 Galaxy Nexus JOP40C kernel. Tested and working on my stock/rooted 4.2/4.2.1 GNex. As always, flash at your own risk.
Thanks to kalo86 for providing the AOSP ROM 4.2 zip where the boot image came from. :good:

Thank you. This is definitely very helpful for people like me who aren't aware that custom kernel wouldn't be backwards compatible.
However, I'm using nexus 7, just wondering how could I extract the stock kernel from the nexus 7 factory image?
(I understand that this isn't a nexus 7 post but I'm just asking a general question on how to get the stock kernel hope that's ok)
I assume this kernel wouldn't work for my device either?
Thanks in advance.

Good question. I will create a stock kernel flash for the Nexus 7 (as I have one as well) and post it up there in the N7 XDA forum.
Also, the kernel is the boot.img file located in the zip for ROMs. You can fastboot install it, or make it into a CWM file which is good in case you don't have a computer with ADB nearby. Link to N7 Stock kernel:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34254473
Thanks!
Thank you for ur reply. Definitely gonna save me lots of time!
How do you make it a cwm file? Just zipping the .img file?
Also, I can't seems to boot into cwm recovery without a toolkit is that normal for installing an incorrect custom kernel?

Boot up holding all the buttons to get into recovery. Then flash.
Google for the cyanogenmod walkthrough on how to make a kernel flash. Its a bit in depth for here. Good luck!

Not sure actually. Hopefully someone can test it out as I no longer have a GNex.

Better not flash it as 4.2.1 and 4.2.2 kernels are not compatible with each other.

The title of this thread states 4.2/4.21, so my guess would be no on 4.1.2

Am pretty new to flashing roms and mods. I've did the streak, captivate, s2 lte, and now just got the nexus.
Was wondering if I can just keep it stock and grab pieces of mods and flash em?
Thanks for any answers

Yes, you can use stock ROM, but you will have to get root access and unlock bootloader anyway. Also probably you will want to flash custom recovery which is very helpfull in cases when flashing some mods goes wrong.

So I can keep stock and just get mods then.... hard to choose with all the roms out there. Thanks for the response. Might just try a rom though cause this nexus starts to slow after after awhile
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Mods can not be used on stock odexed ROM, you'll have to flash a Stock deodexed ROM, which isn't 100% factory stock. The ROM will be untouched other than deodexing the system files.
To install an OTA update, you must present the stock recovery on the galaxy

Ohh yes. I was just about to start a new thread. I would really appreciate some help on this also. Or a non altered, pure stock kernel for 4.0.2 and 4.0.3.

So in theory, if I want stock 4.0.3, I just grab the stock image from the code website, flash, backup, restore my custom rom then restore boot.img from my stock backup?

I used this. It reset it. But I don't know the build numbers for stock. Also, I don't know its like a pure kernel or is altered or not, depending on the rom.
Just a clean pure stock kernel. = )

The reset kernel is the same as stock but it may have a different signature. It doesn't affect the functionality but if you want to send your phone in for warranty then you should flash google's factory images in fastboot. If you do, don't forget to flash the new radios for your region afterwards since the factory images include the XXK6 radio.
Thanks for your reply man.
That's true. I spose I'm after a pure kernel for just stability etc. I get funny behaviour from custom kernels and I'd like a pure unaltered copy of the 4.0.3 kernel. That's all. Haha. Hope I'm making sense.

IF THINGS GO HORRIBLY WRONG ..
1. DON'T PANIC
2. RESTORE USING YOUR CWM OR TWRP FULL BACKUP !

1. BACKUP - BACKUP - BACKUP
For God's Sake .. Do a CWM OR TWRP FULL BACKUP FIRST!
2. FLASH KERNEL IN RECOVERY
3. WIPE CACHE AND DALVIK CACHE
4. REBOOT LET ROM SETTLE 5-10 MINUTES THEN REBOOT
5. ENJOY!
How To Add init.d Support:
1. After Kernel Install and Reboot Run: init.d-Support-New.zip From Recovery
2. Reboot
3. Check to see it worked!
4. Look in the: /data/local/tmp/init.d_log_test.txt
Look Inside: init.d_log_test.txt - You Should See: INIT Working

Looking back at your question and your replies above, I can tell you that there are NO 4.2 stock kernels, because that update hasn't even come yet
Now if you want the kernel for 4.1.2, grab the MA4 boot.img that ImEVO posted above
If you want the kernel for 4.1.1, find a rom based on that (it'll say LJ7 in the thread title, meaning its based on that update) and grab its boot.img (the kernel is stored in there)
