[Q] (GB27 Modem/Kernel/ROM - Root/Stock) Need Help - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I just flashed my phone to (GB27 Modem/Kernel/ROM - Root/Stock) I chose the unrooted full stock restpre. It works not bad so far but I did notice all of my data is still there. Shouldn't this have wiped out the device first?

My pictures and download folder data stayed too. I did a factory reset. Kept root.

So the full stock restore does not wipe data (pictures and downloaded folders etc etc) but it does format? how about the no data restore what does that do that kill all your data.
I guess what im getting at is which is the better option. Also how has GB27 performed for you thus far?

Should've said. .restore no data or restire data. something like that. I always uses the full wipe and just moved important stuff to sd card. Want to start from scratch qith no chance for any lingering pieces
jellyverse soaked E4GT

Restore wipes all data except your sd card, whether it's rooted or not.
Nodata keeps all your data intact, rooted or not.
Use restore if coming from ics, gingerbread or any custom rom.
Use nodata if already running jelly bean.
Ics, gb, assorted other builds CM and such data can make a mess of your phone if installing jelly bean.
Has to do with system partitions.

I have always used the restore option which wipes data. Gb27 is good so far. No issues with rom. Modem is fast at home. But out when no signal it really searches.

Yes you always update prl and profile after new Rom flash.
Now if you "none"flash you don't have to update.:beer:

Yeah, that's one of the first things I do when I flash. I can't remember a time it hasn't read 61009. Hmmm, interesting. I get able the same signal/speed regardless of the ROM, so not sure how much it would affect things, or how to change it at this point anyway . And yeah, after using PRL, second thing I do is shut autocorrect off, ha.

Blazer rom 4.0 vs Calkulins 2.9.2

Just wondering which y'all prefer, I've been running Calkulins for near a month and wondered if I should stay or try blazer.. I'm all about performance and battery life.. Thanks go yalls input
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
I would go with Blazer. Phantom is CONSTANTLY updating his so that it improves in battery and performance. There's no undervolting script included, but you can adjust that anyways with SetCPU and you probably don't need it because Blazer battery life is amazing.
I'm a Blazer fan myself, so naturally I would recommend trying it out. What you could do is nandroid backup your Calkulin set up, and try Blazer. If you don't like it you can always restore your Calkulin set up.
I personally am using blazer, i didnt like calkulin's for some reason, although im currently waiting for the updated version of TCP's MIUI.

+1 on Blazer. Both are excellent roms but Blazer is definitely ahead in the battery game (though from what I read, Calkulin's new ICS ROM has amazing battery life when idle).

Follow the OP instructions exactly and you should be good to go. Most people who where stuck at the boot logo didn't wipe fully. You can just flash calks format all to make things simpler, then flash the rom right after.
after you flash blazer 4.0 and can boot, you can restore your data using cwm if you want. Just go to back up and restore in cwm, then advance restore-> data of your latest nandroid backup.
I expected this thread to be about 50/50! What have I been missing out on? Lol

I think you should give Blend a try.
I love Blazer for its battery life and frequent updates. I love Calkulins for all the extra stuff he has thrown in there (and yes his ICS room is awesome!).
But yeah my all time favorite is Blend (on GB or ICS).

If you do restore-data, does it put all the settings and programs back on the phone like it was with the other rom? One reason i'm hesitant to install another rom is all the work it takes to get it back to the way this one was.
The first rom I flashed was blazer and I loved it! but it seemed like after each update I disliked it more and more, although I'm sure his new one is awesome. My personal preference is Calk's because it was completely stable for me and gave me the best battery life, even overclocked.
Well I tried to full wipe with Calkulins zip and for extra measure wiped myself and I'm back on the Samsung boot screen.. What's going on with blazer not wanting to install.. I'm on el29..

Try flashing the stock el29 rom which will set the kernel and modem back to el29. Happened to me before and this has worked.

I am currently on Blazer 4.0 and it is super smooth and stable. I was using Calkulins OG ICS build and i had alot of crashes and very problematic. Though Calkulin post all leaks and new builds very quickly and is getting the dev opertunities where they are now i believe blazer is far perfecting them.

Did you do an MD5 check to make sure you got a good clean download? I had the same problems before and I found it was due to a bad download (it happens, not the dev's fault).

[ ROM ] Stock Rooted FD02 System [ ICS / OS 4.0.3 ]

This ROM is completely stock with exception that root/busybox is included and it uses a stock, slightly modded kernel. The kernel is modded to have mass storage by default, init.d support and it has an unsecured stock recovery(allows flashing of zips).
All must be flashed through recovery console
Factory reset \ Data format is HIGHLY recommended(use FORMAT ALL attached before flashing)

According to the OP, the included kernel has the SD fix in it, and has a stock but unlocked recovery that allows flashing unsigned zips...
Never having messed w/ stock recovery -- my question is does it allow nandroid backups or restores, and what about restoring a rogue/cwm generated nandroid (e.g. from an FC24 repack)?

Download darkside superwipe and darkside cachewipe for use with cwm recovery. Should be in tdj's rom thread. Read op in that thread, reread that op. Boot to recovery go to backup and restore and make a nandroid backup, then install your zips:
Darkside superwipe
Radio
Rom
Reboot- don't touch anything for at least ten minutes
Reboot again and enjoy
If the rom acts up boot to recovery flash darkside CACHEWIPE, not the superwipe. I usually do it after getting rom all set up.
Any trouble during flashing (ie.. bad rom download and not wanting to boot) superwipe then restore your nandroid. Enjoy the power of samsung

If your coming from aokp or cm9 then you can just flash over with darkside cache wipe, rom, gapps, reboot. But if your coming from darkside you can't flash chimera, it has to be a complete wipe and flash.

Flash in recovery like your doing a Rom but no superwipe.
Boot to recovery
Flash radio ( ics radio, or a modified gb radio that's had rils removed)
Flash darkside CACHEwipe.

[Q] Stuck at the splash screen.

When I am on TW jellybean I have updated mt PRL and profile and when it reboots all I get is the splash screen. That's it. I can still hear notifications and when my phone rings. Only way out that I have seen was to use Odin. I had this happen on Jellyverse GB27, TBSGS3 GB08, and Kobridge GB27. On the TBSGS3 it happened after I had opened the camera. All of them had the stock kernel as well. I have been running CM10.1 which I'm back on now but I was wondering if anybody else has dealt with this?

After cm10.1 you need to do a full restore, thats wipe and then some x2 , partitions are very important on jb and the only way to do that is with a total restore. Restore back to a stock running jb.
I would try that after backing up your phone to your pc . Or using EL29 btr .

No I actually haven't tried this one.. I normally Odin EL29 and mobile odin EL26 and go from there. Lately I have been Odining FI27 and then moblie odin EL26. I have used the direct boot EL29 but sometimes it seems a lil wOnKy and won't flash things. EL26 seems to be the best for me. Maybe me doing these from FI27 is what's causing the dilemma? I used to run GB08 all day and had no problems.
You see gb08 all day and no problem!
Forget about all fl, fk, odin stuff for now, backup your sd's to your pc, d/l the current o/c gb27 rooted/restore and do your phone a favor, let it have some stock/rooted jb, at least until source drops. By then devs will be able to cook up some proper roms with recovery and flashing will be fun all over again.

So since we last spoke about this matter I Odin'd GB27 and NO problems. Had a setup I liked then of course TBSGS4 came out today and the exact same problem happened after I update PRL and profile. She starts to boot and like clockwork after the boot animation it sits there. When you've flashed other ROMs are you updating the prl and profile? I am not sure but maybe my phone is a turd? I had a brick I believe when AOKP was fairly new still and got a replacement E4GT. With the replacement it was all good except for the fact that my USB jig no longer worked. I even flashed that old EG31 bootloader and it still won't clear my counter on this phone, so maybe it's this device? I haven't seen anybody else with this problem. My phone doesn't have any other prob's just this TW JB ordeal, except on the stock/rooted. I can do my ad blocker and reboot and all that. How annoying lol!

Thanks, happy Easter to you as well. It is running and that was the first flash I did from stock GB27, I use mobile odin and flash EL26 and do the normal routine of wiping and it still messed up after I set it up. All that is pretty much google setting up my apps too, so it can't be TB backups. I am back to another full Odin restore now of GB27. So I will probably stay with this for a bit because it gets a lil tiring with the whole SD card file transfers now lol, although I am getting fast at it lol!

You may have some sort of corrupted file or bad download somewere that's causing the bork.
TB is a great app and does a lor but it is known to cause issues with b/a's . There could be corrupt data or incompatible data that your trying to restore. When staying within the same build jb to jb, ics to ics, its usually no issue but mixing builds or throwing cm whatever into the mix can create data restore problems. I never restore any data on my phone, just Google stuff contacts and mail.
Isolate your file or app restore and try phone out in between procedures, maybe you can find whats causing the bork. Are you b/u games on your phone?

All backups are from JB, and I've been allowing Google to set up my apps in the beginning now so I haven't even needed to do any TB installs. I only sign in my Google account and let my phone do the rest. I have had some games but they aren't on either storage since Odin wiped everything. There is something WoNkY going on somewhere in my phone though, maybe I will look closer into some of the folders on my phone/card.

[Q] Couldn't install on USB storage or SD card after update to GB27

Hey everyone,
I recently updated to GB27 from GA10 and somehow Nova Prime and Swiftkey were removed from my phone. I visited the Play Store to reinstall them but I get the following error:
Error - Couldn't install on USB storage or SD card.
I'm getting along but it's been a pain in the butt. I've looked all over but can't find a solution. Some posts say to unmount the SD card and others suggest trying to delete a file named "smdl2tmp1" but unmounting the SD doesn't help and the named file doesn't exist. Does anyone have a fix for this? Please! I'm tired of the stock keyboard.

I had flashed a GB27 rooted restore ROM to my phone that I found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2191954. Prior to that I wiped and formatted both the USB storage and the SD Card and everything worked great. Yesterday, I used ROM Toolbox Pro to use the root browser to install Mobile Odin Lite so I could put AGAT trec_0.3.2 on the phone so I could do nandroid backups for security purposes. At this point both ROM Toolbox Pro and NOVA PRIME are installed with no issues. Checked phone a minute ago for a facebook update that woke me up and all of a sudden ROM Toolbox Pro is no longer installed, and neither is Nova Prime. It was just installed less than 24 hours ago and I didn't uninstall it. It still shows in the app drawer. Icons are still in place. But when you tap on them, it says "App isn't installed." I try to re-install from play store, and run into this issue. So not only am I having this issue, but apps that were previously installed are simply "disappearing" and then falling victim to this process. I can't find smdl2tmp1.asec anywhere on the phone with any root browser I download, and simply un-mounting and re-mounting the SD Card doesn't work. I can't un-mount or re-mount the USB Storage, only format. Haven't tried this yet. Rebooting the phone doesn't work. Cleared the Delvik Cache and system cache to no avail. Even tried fixing permissions in the AGAT recovery menu and still nothing. Oh, and it seems to only be affecting the apps I've purchased, none of the free apps on my phone seem to be affected in any way...
I don't quite know which kernel to flash and if there is a rooted stock kernel I can install with Mobile Odin Lite... Links and help would be appreciated, because I've been scouring the web for an hour to find a fix and nothing is working. T_T
I found the kernel in zip form here. You can find it through the forums on this site but the link I am posting is a few pages deep so you don't have to go looking. Anyway, just place the zip on the SD card, reboot into recovery, flash the zip, and reboot the phone. This worked for me and it was like a breath of fresh air after being choked for a week. Good luck!

*Edit: I am using a rooted stock ROM.

This just happened to work like a charm, so thanks a bunch!
We actually have source built CWM now, so using stock is no longer needed.

I don't quite understand why you'd want to use a non-stock kernel with a stock ROM... I'm still new-ish to rooting and the things involved, that's for sure. >.>'
Built in tweaks, Overclocking and the reverse, more governors. There are a ton of things.

Ok, so maybe you can answer another question I have that is a bit off of the topic, but:
I just found a setting in the Data Programming mode (##3282#) under the advanced section that states: "LTE Status: LTE: <not set>." What is that about? I thought the phone was WiMax only...?
No idea what it means. It is probably left over files or settings. This phone is WiMax only so those settings will either do nothing or if changed, will mess up your phone.

That's what I figured, just wanted confirmation. Thanks. *tips hat*

So I found out what caused my issues with being unable to install to USB Storage or SD Card. I flashed AGAT_GB27_repack.tar to my device so I could do those nandroid backups... and that has to be what caused the issues because after flashing a stock GB27 kernel to the device it wiped my AGAT recovery tREC_v0.3.2 back to stock recovery... and now the device is functioning perfectly. Could you possibly link me to a kernel that comes built in with some custom recovery so that I can have something like CWM or AGAT, and one that's functioning perfectly by chance? FML. >.>'
Go look in the development forum. We have source built CWM now so that issue is no longer a problem.

I don't know if I'm just blind but all I could find for GB27 was tAGAT + GB27 kernel thing and that resulted in being unable to install to USB or SD Card and made my purchased apps disappear... again. So I had to reflash back to a stock GB27 kernel... I didn't seen any CWM kernels... >.>'

This was all I could find, and I don't know if it's going to work with a stock ROM.

I downloaded the 0.3.0 tar and I'm gonna wait until confirmation that it will work with a stock rooted ROM.

Mobile Odin Lite isn't picking up on the .zip, so how do I install this without a custom recovery?
Install a repack then flash the zip

Ok, I did that and all seems to be well for the moment. I'll keep in touch if apps start disappearing again and if I run into the USB/SD Card errors again. Thanks a lot man, I'd thank your last few posts but I'm only limited to 8 thanks per day... >.>'
Thanks for dealing with my noobishness. :3
