[Q] Wifi Tether on Rogers Galaxy S3 - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

I'm having trouble getting the wifi tethering working on my Rogers Galaxy S3. It says it connected but with no internet access. I read some other posts where it says to try using wifi tether or foxfi from the playstore, with no luck. I also tried changing the APN settings for the tethering, I did not have any luck with either.
Im also running tasks 650 Rom if that changes anything.
Anyone have any luck getting wifi hotspot working with Rogers??

If you're connecting through a PC, bringing up the "troubleshoot problems" usually fixes it for me, worst case for me was I had to reboot the phone & restart my wifi driver on the PC

I'll try that out tomorrow and see what happens

You can't get it to work on LTE unless you change some coding. There's a post in Task's thread about it, I bet a little search will find it.
You can tether H+ just fine without changing anything though.

Can't seem to get wifi tether working...

Phone: Samsung Epic 4G Touch
v2.3.6 EL29 from HERE
I tried loading WIFI Tether from this website and no matter what version I load on the phone I can't get my computer to pick up the SSID and connect. I know it's not my computer since it running off WIFI Usb card and I am able to connect it to my neighbors WIFI as well.
Any help is greatly appreciated!!
I use that one on ics and have to select galaxy nexus cdma as my phone for it to work. Also foxfi works well on el29 and does not even require root.

As someguyatx said, use foxfi..... That's what i've used since I found that app

I have the same problem when trying to use wifi tether, my device cannot see the ssid when it is on. I tried several versions with no success.
Installed FoxFi and that works great, but I would still like to get WT to work to see which one is better on my battery.
I am still on a GB rom.

Yeah, I too use Foxfi, it doesn't even require root (although I'm rooted anyway). It works very nicely on Sprint, and allows you to create a mobile hotspot for other devices to connect to wirelessly. It also allows you to use WPA. It is available here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.foxfi&hl=en

Is anyone able to get android-wifi-tether to work on LG2?

I just rooted (teamepic cwm+root.zip) and installed the android wifi tether. Wifi tether is not working. I went to the QBKing thread in development, and see that others are having similar wifi tether problems. Does anyone have wifi tether working on an LG2 release? I am considering flashing back to a stock LF9 if sprint managed to bork the wifi tether with their latest release.
TIA.

After my laptop connects to the tether, I can't actually get out to the internet. It's like the NAT is not working. checking the IP stack on my laptop, I am getting the right ip address, gatway, etc assigned. Wifi tether shows the laptop connected. But I can't do anything.
I followed the QBKING video step by step (except using a different password for encryption). I have the Samsung Galaxy Nexus (LTE/CDMA) profile selected. I've tried some others in desperation, but none are working.
I think I'll try uninstall/reinstall of wifi tether, or maybe just use foxfi now that i am rooted.
go to settings of the wifi tether app if you havent already and set it to enable the security settings so that youll need a password on any device you enable to use your phones internet signal and that should work because i was having that problem with the wifi tether app on my evo 3d and when i enabled security protection that allowed additional devices to connect to the internet. on my galaxy s3 i havent had any problems like that cause i intiially started with this method and ive been up and running just fine and im in houston so it seems the 4g lte is up and running here cause my phone shows 4g at the top for signal and my pages load up on the phones web searches faster than when its connected to my uverse wireless modem. hope this helps you man.

Ok if you didn't already, try gnex gsm instead. Also does the tether app show any numbers moving or do they stay at 0.0. Make sure your version of the tether app is up to date as well. And disable wake lock is unchecked in settings
I had the same issues as the op. With wireless tether change profile to galaxy nexus gsm not cdma and you must use access control. Then you should PROFIT......

Has anyone had a chance to try this? Did it fix the intermittent connection problems? I am going to try it later, because wifi tether is still not working for me (LG8) using Galaxy Nexus CDMA/LTE and with the access control disabled. I am just curious to see if anyone has this working as using the GSM profile is counter-intuitive for Sprint.

I tried it and the wifi tether still doesn't work. Half the time I start it, it requests Superuser and "starts" but there is no SSID being broadcast and I don't think the wifi radio is actually turned on. Every once in a while, it will broadcast the SSID, and I can connect but the up/down data stay at 0.00kb. Other times, I can connect, and I see the up/down data slowly incrementing, but I can't actually get out to the internet (or FTP, or telnet or....).
I guess I'm just fooked until foxfi or android wifi tether for root actually release a specifically-supported SGS3 version of their apps.
My issues were i could see the ap but not fully connect or allow internet access. Make sure your using access control it will not work with out it. Also make sure you have routing fix checked and use auto not ad hoc.

*edit* I'm starting to wonder if this is an LTE-related thing. After a bit of testing, it seems like the tether works ok if I am on a 3G connection, but when I'm on LTE is when it won't work.

No 3g or wifi

Good morning,
I've been reading the forums for a while for solutions and tips but I am stumped on this one.
So I had stock Epic 4g (SPH-D700) on the Sprint network that was rooted and running CM 10.1 just fine. My USB connection broke so I bought a new motherboard so that I could switch to Cleartalk wireless, which required a connection for them to flash. They flashed the phone and while in stock, 3g data worked fine as well as phone calls and texting. Even stock though, with new motherboard, wifi did not work. It wouldn't even turn on to search for a connection. After rooting and flashing CM 10.1 while on the new Cleartalk network, 3g data now does not work and it gives me this error "unable to resolve host get.cm no address associated with hostname." Wifi still behaves the same. Calls and texts still work but I currently don't have any way to connect to the internet via 3g or wifi. Please help! I don't want to go back to stock just for connection.
Thank you!

Sounds like 2 issues here.
1. You probably forgot to connect the wifi antenna when you swapped motherboards.
2. You don't have your APNs configured for Cricket after flashing CM10.1.

1. I will double check this as soon as I can.
2. Any idea how I can go about configuring the APNs? I saw a solution where I backup the APN's with an app while in stock then restore once CM 10.1 is flashed. Will this work for me?

****, no it's not lol. Sorry, I misread. There isn't a ClearTalk thread in our dev forum that I'm aware of. You may want to search the entire XDA site and even Google for that carrier's APN info.

No problem. I will try some things and update this thread with the progress. Thanks again!
So it isn't the hardware connection for the wifi problem. I checked everything and it still didn't work. I even reinstalled the old motherboard to make sure I had all connections right and the wifi worked fine. I just discovered the Bluetooth also doesn't work.
I haven't tried repairing the APN yet, I will update after I try.
Using "APN Backup and Restore" did not work. The app runs and says it is successful but doesn't actually restore the APN's. Or it does and that isn't the problem.

T-Mo GS4 and wifi tethering

Im new to tmobile and XDA but not androids or phone modding. However im having some difficulty understanding how to use the wifi hotspot without using or going past the 500mb data limit.
Ive read several threads and im still not sure which route to go, whats working or what isnt, if its possible anymore or if tmobile has blocked all loop holes to do this. Ive noticed in most of the threads that I've read that a lot of methods are no longer working.
When I was with sprint all I had to do was root my phones and install an app, or flash a rom the unlocked the native hotspot. My phone is currently stock. If someone could give me some detailed instructions or a video tutorial I would greatly appreciate it.
Most of the ROM has Wifi tethering built in. My tether work just fine with Infamouse S4 ROM and I don't have any kind of tethering plan.
Well im pretty content with my stock rom, is there a rooted stock rom that will allow me the ability to bypass the 500mb hotspot limit?
If not, whats the best Rom available for the GS4 that'll do this?
Sent from my SGH-M919 using xda app-developers app
There are ways to do it even on stock rooted ROM. There's a few different threads showing how to do it.
This is one the many (I posted it cause it's the first to show in SEARCH)

T-Mobile is being very tricky and devious with blocking tethering

So over the past week, I've discovered that Fabio Grasso's Wifi Tether Router app has stopped working for my t-mobile LG G3. I tried different configurations, tried e-mailing the dev, and I tried changing the APN. None of it worked.
(Regarding the APN, he says to change T-Mobile to IPv4, but I can only change it to IPv4/IPv6. If I try putting solely IPv4, then my data connection drops out entirely).
Moving on, anyway, I've found out that if I use the Wifi tether router app, I can only access HTTPS sites. For example, any banking site, facebook, google, yahoo, etc. all work as long as I stick https:// in front of it. However, anything else won't work (like xda).
So I can only assume that T-mobile is somehow blocking that traffic...and now I need a way to disguise my own traffic...
I tried connecting through OpenVPN through a VPN I had, but even that won't connect properly.
And before anybody says to install the stock tether app Mod, I'm still on the stock recovery so I can't flash anything.
I'm on the stock recovery (but I'm still rooted) because I prefer to mess with my device as little as possible. I want to keep it as stable as possible, and having a stock recovery means I'm not tempted to go out and install new ROMs or flash anything that could potentially brick my device.
So...does anybody have any solutions? This is like a tug-of-war with T-Mobile, and right now it's in their favor.
This is old news. T-mobile made it knonw they would start blocking tether if it is being mistreated. Devs will have to become more clever and trickier with their apps. With this in mind, just be careful. They said anything that goes against the contract you signed regarding their data usage / tethering will cause your tethering to be cut of if data not cut of for that month (can't remember the full detail)

Well this is the first time I've experienced any issues. I have a total of 11gb usage this month, and it's almost over. 95% of usage is on mobile, so I see no reason for them to even become suspicious. I doubt I'll be cut off. The "warning" they gave a couple weeks ago referred to like 20 customers or something that were using hundreds of gigs of data.
In any case, I really hope devs can find permanent ways around this.
By the way, I don't really understand ports/encryption, but I know that "443" is secured, so how possible is it for me to just manually make everything go through that port?

Download THIS zip and extract it then find the APN XML and replace your old one with the one in the zip you extracted. Boom you should have full ipv4 for your tether app and vpn.
Make sure you rename instead of completely replacing. You'll probably need to restart and if it still doesn't work that means dalvik needs to be wiped and your Sol unless you want to install twrp. Unless a app exists that can wipe dalvik without recovery.

Okay now this is getting interesting.
Although this is getting into brick-able territory. With my LG G2 when I messed with build.prop I almost soft-bricked it.
In any case, I can't seem to find out exactly how to modify the APN XML, and a quick google search is just showing me "apns-conf.xml", is that the same thing? Is it just a value inside build.prop?
Also, the warning on the xda mod page says "TETHER BROKE FOR NOW". Does that only apply to stock tether or something?
Edit: Nevermind, looked through the zip file and it turns out the apns-conf.xml file is under system/etc.
I'm still worried that this could cause some damage though. Lemme just double check - not brickable if I just replace, correct? and Also, I can create a backup of the apns-conf.xml and restore it without any issue, correct?

Yes stock tether but the APN in that zip won't wreck it its the build prop edits that broke built-in tether. You won't need to do any builp prop edits just swap out your APN.XML for the one located in that zip.

So to be clear - I change the apns-conf.xml file under system/etc , correct?

I looked through that entire thread last night, and I discovered that somebody was having issues with Wifi calling after installing the mod, so I got nervous and backed out even though I've already created a backup of the xml, lol.
Do you know if wifi calling + texting still works? That's a dealbreaker for me if it doesn't, because I use wifi calling/texting all the time.

apns-conf.xml does not break WiFi calling or texting. This is where the tethering APN is stored. What could break WiFi calling is modifying build.prop.
I'm pretty sure they have deep packet inspection on their network and they can tell exactly what kind of traffic is being done. Any traffic using the fast.t-mobile.com APN that doesn't look like mobile can be very easily blocked. You can't deep packet inspect SSL (https) traffic, so I'm not surprised this works but everything else does not. An SSL VPN would get around this.
I'm using the PrimeTether mod which basically modifies the stock tethering to use the mobile APN so that your data looks like it's coming from the phone. WiFi Tether Router might be doing something different that T-Mobile can see and that's how they are blocking it. It actually might be that WiFi Tether Router is tethering using IPV4. The stock tether app tethers with IPV6.

The prime tether changes one line in the framework-res to the fast APN. At least that's all I had to do. I never released my version because auto beat me to the upload.

He changed more than that. I had made that change to framework-res but was still having issues with my stock tether. There's a check being done by the tether process. I believe he modified the smali code to get around this, just like it had to be done for the G2.

Are you sure? The change plus the APN XML I use worked flawlessly for me. Perhaps it was just the perfect storm of mods I had at the time.

I believe so, but could be wrong. I couldn't get it to work and had zeroed in on the smali file that needed to be changed. I believe I did a checksum comparison and found them to be different.
Without prime's mod I could only tether up to my 3 GB bucket or had to do a dirty hack to hostapd for it to allow wireless clients to connect. It would default to 0 clients for some reason. Maybe I had a weird storm of mods that broke it.

The way you worded that, you describe Prime's mod as using IPv6 to work around Tmo's tether limit, but it doesn't, it must use IPv4 to "mask" it.
When I change the APN back to IPv6, my hotspot enables but does not work whatsoever, nothing loads on my laptop, it'll connect and obtain an IP but no traffic is sent nor received over the phone's data. Can't remember if it's suppose to be like that or not, but IPv4 works, IPv6 does not with hotspot, but data stills work either way on the phone itself. I'll post over in Prime's thread about this.
BTW, WiFi Tether Router borked for me two about three weeks ago, a few days after Prime's mod came up, luckily. Been using it ever since. :highfive:

It has been a while so I forgot how Prime and WiFi Tether Router worked. The stock tether app, with the stock tethering APN uses IPV6, but you're right, Prime's mod uses IPV4 with the mobile data APN.
WiFi Tether Router implements its own DHCP server, iptables and hostapd configuration. Something in the way it does things makes the traffic look different from the stock tether traffic, so T-Mobile is able to block it.

This is remarkable to me. It SHOULD look completely the same with the exception of user-agent (which is easy to spoof).
I've been using EasyTether (the USB version) and they have yet to figure out how to block that AFAICT.

That was my assumption, but I don't see why it would be different either.
I just tried WiFi Tether Router on my phone and it worked just as well as it had in the past. I did some tcpdumps and the traffic looks the same on both. My guess then would be the users that are getting throttled or blocked are doing things that are CLEARLY not mobile phone traffic.
Another user did 32 GB of Xbox Live traffic while using the PrimeTether mod and was throttled. Surprise? No.
Those getting blocked or throttled are probably abusing the system.
Wifi tether router works for me on my tmobile S5.
