I know that using ES File Explorer I can change my permissions to an APK to RW-R-R to make it work.... but what does this mean in TWRP Recovery, what would happen if I clicked it? Thanks!

I did a quick google search and couldn't find any additional information on it, so take my answer with a grain of salt.
I believe that TWRP looks in the /system/app folder and changes all of the permissions for all of the APKs there. It might look in other places, but I know that it at least checks (at a minimum) that folder and fixes those permissions.

It would fix permissions lol
Things in /system/app need certain permissions, so do things in /system/etc, and in other places, etc etc
What this does is it makes sure that all of these are correct, because if permissions arent set right you can get force-closes, and fixing permissions in recovery can potentially fix some force close issues

Lol but no, I've never seen an instance where fixing permissions has made things worse and caused a round of problems...its like, even if the floor is clean then cleaning it again wont help, but wont do any harm either
Not sure about TWRP but out of curiosity some time ago, I tried the fix permissions in Titanium Backup and afterwards my phone went nuts. Thankfully I had a nandroid that saved the day.

Here ya go. I pulled it out of SalvageMod 1.1
Most likely will need to be pushed to /system/app
You could just re-flash your ROM...

Root explorer
Copy the file over to system/apps and make the permissions the same as the rest of the folder.
If it asked to overwrite just hit yes.

You need to place the apk on the root of your sdcard, then open root explorer, enable r/w mode, navigate to sdcard, copy the apk, then get into the system/app folder, then paste.

What steps are you doing? I can't test the file because I don't have an evo at the moment.
I put it at the root of my SD card and then I copy and pasted it to /system/app and then I tried to install it. Could you explain to me what parsing is?
I also mounted r/w
Well the parsing error is cuz its having trouble reading the file.
So does that mean the file is corrupt?
Its possible, I would try re-downloading it.

The problem is because you're trying to install it. You don't install system apps. You just copy and paste it to the /system/app folder. THen make sure your permissions are set correctly, by long pressing on the Music.apk, and selecting permissions. Then be sure that user: read/write are both checked. After that, reboot. That's it. You don't click on 'install'. Copy, paste, check permissions, reboot.
or of course
adb remount
adb push Music.apk /system/app
adb reboot
I just tried all of that and it isnt installed after I reboot.

You finally get your phone back? It's about time!
I just downloaded the Music.apk that I attatched, and can't get it to install. I'm on a Sense rom at the moment, and have never tried installing the Gingerbread Music.apk on a Sense rom, and doubt/not sure that it would even work to begin with. Either that, or maybe there are other files that need to go with it? Any other music player I've installed (HTC music player, MIUI player, and Honeycomb player) has no other necessary files, and you just push the .apk to /system/app and all is good. This one seems different, or it just doesn't work on Sense roms. I'm not sure. I tried the Music.apk from Evervolv too, but that wouldn't work either.
OP, what Rom is it that you're on? Are you currently on a Gingerbread rom? If so, just wipe cache, and dalvik cache, then re flash the ROM, as drmac suggested before. That will give you back all of the apps that came with the rom. If you are indeed on a Gingerbread ROM, you'll get the player you're after back. If you're not on a Gingerbread ROM, I'm not sure that the 2.3GB player will work on it to begin with.
I installed BBC iPlayer(dont ask me why ) from the market - and now it just wont go away. Uninstalling leads to "Uninstall failed"(Avinstallationen misslyckades). Tried forced stop, cleaning data, empty cache...
Any idea how to force removal of this program?

Weird. Mine is installed in data/app. Maybe that's why you can't uninstall it, if it thinks it is a system file. Are you rooted, if so, you could try Titanium backup to remove. failing that... go for it, it shouldn't harm your system to manually delete that app. Just make sure it has the same name as the one I posted above.
UK phones come with it pre-installed so it might be in the system/app folder (need root explorer).
There's your answer then. Thanks for the info artesea.

Use the feature in Titanium that can pull apks from cwm backups. You should be able to fix it with that.

I personally tried it once and it didn't work for me, worst comes to worst I'll upload you the JobManager.apk (I assume that's the one you're talking about? The Samsung task manager?). But I assume it works, otherwise they wouldn't include the feature.

To install it, you'll need a file explorer with root access (ES File Explorer, ROOT File Explorer, etc.). Then you'll have to move it to /system/app (to get to /system you'll have to go one level up from /sdcard to get to the root folder /). Make the permissions read "rw- r-- r--" (how you do that depends on what file explorer you use) and then reboot. Should fix the issue.

It'll be an option in root explorer along the lines of "root access". I don't know the exact process because I use ES. Play around in the settings of root explorer until you find it. By default it's disabled to prevent users from actually screwing with their system operating system without knowing what they're doing.

Was it working fine when you first installed it? Either way, there's always 5 generic steps you should always take first when trying to resolve an issue:
1) clear application data
2) reboot to recovery and clear cache
3) clear dalvik cache
4) fix permissions
5) reboot
See if that fixes your issues

As you may guess, when I try to straight install it with es explorer, I get a message stating "Application not installed".

You don't actually install the APK. First, make sure you save a copy of the original "SamsungIME.apk". then extract the APK from the zip file. copy and paste the apk into /system/apps, it'll replace the original file. Once you pasted the apk, long press the apk file and you should be able to change permissions to: rw-r-r, then reboot the phone.
Just remember, you must be rooted in order to change system files.
Hi all,
Something happened to my phone and I ended up having to wipe and re-flash everything. Long story short, I did have the Samsung email 5.0.0.00400 install with the new ROM but I accidentally deleted it via TI Backup. I tried re-installing a backed up version of 5.0.0.00200 but it will not install for some reason.
I've searched around and the most recent apk I could find is 3.3.something, which I have installed now, but I'd really like to get back to the newer version. I know I can re-flash the ROM, but I've done quite a bit of setup, restoring apps and widgets, etc. at this point and I'd hate to lose all that. Figured I'd ask here before going down that road.
Could someone please be kind and link me to a stock Samsung mail app apk for version 5.0 and above?
Thank you in advance!

Still a noob when it comes to some most of this stuff. In this case odex vs deodex. I see the 2 apk files as well as all the files in the lib folder. I'm assuming the apk files install as normal? What do I do with the lib files?

No problem.
If your rooted, you could try just copying the folders over to /system/app. The folder gets 0755 permission and the files get 0644 permission. And then they would be system files. This should work fine, as long as the permissions are set.
Or you could just try installing them regularly.
And Then if you want maybe use Ti Backup to make them system files.
Hope that helps

Yes I am rooted. So just to talk this out before I do anything... I've looked up how to set permissions for files and folders. I have ES File Explorer and understand I can change permissions with root explorer on. I've never done this before so just to make sure I have it correct...
I would copy both secEmail_K and SecExchange folders to the /system/app folder on the phone.
Using Root explorer I would set permissions as:
Folders: rwxr-xr-x
Files: rw-r--r--
Thanks again for your help and quick responses. One more question if you don't mind, just to help me understand permissions. If the files have no executable permissions for any of the 3 classes it would seem as though they wouldn't be able to run. I'm sure I'm misunderstanding however.
