Hello Fellow XDIANS!
There are many threads on XDA describing the method to install Custom ROMS and I am not the only one to post it... This method is the easiest and fastest!
Download and Place CWM and the Custom ROM you want to install on your SD!
Now, Switch off your Phone and boot into recovery mode!
Now, After booting into recovery! Toggle onto "install update from sd card" using Volume Buttons and then click Home Button and slect CWM.aip package!
This will replace Stock Recovery by CWM Recovery!
Now, go to Mounts and Storage and mount "/system"! and then Wip Cache, User Data and Dalvik Cache!
Now, You are all set to install your custom ROM!
Select "install zip from sd card" and then choose the .zip file of your Custom ROM!
After Installation Reboot your SGY!
Congrats! You have installed your Fav Custom ROM on your SGY! :good:
Press THANKS button if this Thread Helped you!

Ahoy! I apologize in advance if this question has been asked and answered before (I'm sure it has - but I couldn't find exactly what I'm looking for via search.)
I currently have the Android Revolution HD v2.0.13 ROM installed.
I'm now looking to install Version 3.0. A 'full wipe' is suggested when flashing 3.0. I remember doing this via ClockworkMod recovery when I changed from my Stock ROM to ARHD, but I've forgotten exactly how to do it.
I see there are a lot of wipe/format options in ClockworkMod Recovery, but I just don't know exactly which one to use.
Any help would be much appreciated!
Bonus Question!: I've only had my phone for three weeks or so. The SD card has gotten /extremely/ messy due to faults of my own, mainly just lazyness. I'd like to just wipe the SD card of all data and start again fresh and clean. Is this possible? If so, how do I do it and will it mess up my ROM or anything? I'm OK with losing ALL my data and just having a freshly-installed ROM and nothing else.
Just go into clockword mod and choose install rom off sd or second option is to power off device and then hold down volume down key and power on...this will enable recovery console and there you can do a full wipe and then flash new rom ....make sure new rom is already on sd card.
As for sd card im not entirely sure but think you should be ok if you really wanted to wipe it....but probably be better off just trying to tidy it up .....up to you though
hope this helped
Yeah, I know how to get into Clockworkmod Recovery and all, but to actually perform a 'full wipe', I don't know what option to choose specifically.
Thanks though!
......wipe data/factory reset is the one to choose.
Hi,
You can either format your SD via ROM-Manager or CWM there's definitely an option for doing that but I can't remember where exactly!

Also wipe /cache and /dalvik-cache, these are actually the most important as this is where files reside that may cause you problems as it's not overwritten by flashing a new ROM.
As for clearing out the SD card, go ahead and format it if you want, the ROM will install all required folders on boot up so don't worry about losing anything important

Hi everybody,
I like other people have had memory limitation issues with my HTC Desire.
Done everything including root, s-off, partitioned sd card.I am now trying to upgrade to CM 7.1, the final step hopefully!!!
Note:I am currently using stock 2.3.3
Currently have CM 7.1 downloaded on computer and going to install....BUT every instruction I see requires me to have rom manager/ clockworkmod recovery. However, I can't install these because ''this app can't be installed in your country''. unfortunately used to this.
So does anyone by chance have any links to instructions or have instructions of how I can install this without downloading any apps, hopefully an idiot proof version.(Not worried about saving a recovery etc....phone is basically blank.)
Thanks in advance for any help.
Kind Regards,
rkdeane
Put it on your SD card. Flash from recovery. See the CM wiki.
Recovery has nothing to do with Market.

So i looked on CM wiki but it wasn't clear to me.I have c/pasted what i saw below.
-By theme to they mean rom, bc didn't see any rom instructions.
-When it says copy to the root of my sd card, can i just copy the zip from my desktop to the sd card via windows, how do they mean the root of it??
-#4 , how do you flash. i see a flash image on the wiki, must i downlaod/install this??
Just double checking befor ei go experimenting and mess up soemthing.
Obviously a complete noob, but learning everyday, any help is much appreciated. thanks for the help so far guys.

from wiki:
1.Perform a Nandroid Backup before flashing any theme.
2.Download a theme you like. Check the forums.
3.Copy the zipped theme file to the root of your SD card.
4.Flash it like you would any other .zip file.
from how to use recover (wiki):
HTC Desire (GSM) Hold Volume Down and the Power button, then use Volume Down to highlight "bootloader" and press the Power button to select it. Once in the bootloader, use Volume Down to select "recovery" and press the Power button to select.

Ok so tried to insta.
Did the following:
1)hboot
2)went into recovery
3)install .zip in sd card
it went into unrevoked and i selected the file and installed.
everything finished then exited.
but now all i get is a screen with cyanogen android guy on skateboard and and arrow going in circles around hope....looks like a screen saver that refreshed like every 5 seconds......so what do i do now????? seems soemhting did not go as planned.
Did you wipe? Read what I said last post
Sent from my HTC Desire using xda premium
no did not wipe....have nothing installed on phone....and i cleared everything off of sd card before i put on the cm 7.1 zip...
unfortunately your post came acouple mins after i attempted !! as luck would have it.
goign through your faq's now to see if i can sort it out.....
cant get passed the screen saver....but i can get into hboot/recovery
i see your wipe comment below:
should i let it run for 10 mins?? i let it run for like 2 and figured it was just stuck.
should i do a factory reset....will that undo all my rooting and partitioning that i have done???
also can cm7.1 work with an ext4 partition??? which is what i have.
the gparted advice was excellent as well.
what is all this about wiping? Do I need to?
Maybe. If you go from one stock ROM to a custom ROM, or one Custom ROM to another, the settings may not be compatible. You can wipe from ClockworkMod Recovery. - Wipe data/factory reset.
If the ROM is stuck in a boot loop for more that 10 minutes, you may have to back to recovery and do a wipe of the Data partition
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
Yes you must factory reset. It won't affect root or anything. It just wipes the data partition

Thanks rootSU,
I wiped/ factory reset it in recovery mode. next tiem i started it BOOTED INTO CM 7.1....though it seems to take its sweet time. doesn't recognize sim, but think i founds some pages to help deal with that......moving in the right direction

First of all you need to install cwm first
Here is the link to the latest cwm http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21424744
And you have to root your phone.
Here is the link on how to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33379688
If you done all that steps download the rom that you want. All the steps is explained by the dev in the 1st page. So navigate to the 1st page of the thread.
Hope it helps

So by reading what you mentioned i think you have no root/CWM, right? If yes then you need one.
Root your phone. There is a root/unroot post in the development section.
CWM INSTALLATION
1- make sure you have a windows computer.
2- download the zip file, the ops file and odin.
3- extract all the zip files, open odin, add the ops file and flash the recovery .(Full instructions is a sticky in the general section)
FLASHING THE ROM
1- download the rom and its gapps.
2- copy them to your phone's memory.
3- boot into CWM Recovery mode.
4- go to mounts and storage, format /system /data /cache
5- go back and then choose advanced, wipe dalvik cache and battery stats.
6- back to the main page, choose: install zip from sdcard. Install the ROM then the Gapps.
7- again to advanced and FIX PERMISSIONS.
8- reboot system now
9- ENJOY!
Press The Thanks Button If I Helped

Am I suppose to put CM 10.1 and the gapps onto the phone SD as well or am I suppose to put all of them onto my ex.SD card (p.s. It's only a 2gb :/ )? Also, should I try using goomanager or ROM manager or should I just put the files onto my SD and go into recovery and do it that way then? Sorry for the noob questions again, I'm just really knew to all of this stuff

It's always good to put them on your external SD that way if you wipe your internal by accident you'll still have your ROM and hopefully your backup to gall back on.
If you don't have clockwork mod recovery or twrp installed yet you'll need to take care of that first. Decide which recovery you want, download the appropriate program (goo manager for twrp or ROM manager for cwm)
It'll install your recovery.
Reboot into recovery and you'll want to back up your current setup in case you make a mistake. Than you'll wipe than flash your ROM and gapps and reboot and you're done.
This guide should help you with anything you need.

Thanks a whole lot! I appreciate it! Just a few more questions.
*Here's a real nooby one, how do I know if I have CWM or TWRP installed? I can get into recovery mode and it shows that Rom manager symbol up at the top.
*Should I move the SuperUser.zip file from my internal SD to my external sd and would I have to re-root if I did that?
*Hopefully the last question I have , and should my 2gb ex. SD card be big enough for all of the files and the back ups?

Ok so let's answer the last question first. 2gb is fairly small for anything other than 1 backup (depending on what you are backing up) and a ROM and Gapps. I have a 2gb sd that I keep my stock backup and a couple recovery files on for an emergency and a 32gb in my phone for everyday use.
I'm a little concerned about the SuperUser.zip you have floating around, have you installed it yet?
How did you root? I'm curious to see what steps you take. Because once you root, you than flash custom recovery and install SuperUser.zip IN your recovery. So either you already have recovery installed or you aren't 100% rooted yet.
Once SuperUser.zip is installed you can delete the zip, if you want to. It's merely an install file.
Go to your apps, do you see an app labelled SuperUser or SuperSU?

Ok I re read that again and noticed you mentioned that you got into recovery and you can see the logo for Clockwork Mod.
That's great. If you haven't already installed SuperUser.zip you'll want to do that. Also download ROM Manager if you haven't and make sure your recovery is up to date. The latest CWM is 6.0.3.1 you'll see the build number while you're in recovery.
Once that is all done, in recovery you'll want to make a backup.
After that you'll need to preform a full wipe and than you can flash the ROM and Gapps.

Yeah I have SuperSU installed and it grants me root access for like titanium back up and triangle away and that stuff.
Here's the steps that I used to root:
*Plugged my phone into my computer and copied the SuperSU.zip onto my internal SD
*Unplugged my phone and turned it off and booted it into download mode.
*Then I pressed Vol. Up to continue and then I plugged my phone back in and opened odin.
*I clicked the PDA button and chose the .tar file that I downloaded. (The whole thing that I downloaded was called RecoveryGalaxyS3USCanada)
*I then clicked start and waited till it said passed.
*It passed and then I took out my battery so it would be off and then put it into recovery mode I think. (Vol. up + home + power)
*Then it booted into a menu and I clicked install from SD card and then install zip from internal SD card and then I chose the SuperSU.zip and clicked yes and then it loaded and all that and then I chose to reboot it. It rebooted and then I had the SuperSU app and then I downloaded Titanium backup to make sure I was fully rooted and it loaded and backed it up.
That is all the steps that I did to root my s3. It was a video that I found on galaxys3root.com

Download ROM manager and make sure that your recovery is up to date it should be 6.0.3.1
Once its up to date you're ready to backup and flash.

Rom manager causes a LOT of issues when flashing with it. Same with Goo Manager. Some people have had their devices bricked because of thos programs. They are good for just updating your recovery.
Making a nandroid will allow you to try out new ROMs while still keeping a safe backup in the event you experience issues during or after the OS installation. Be sure your device is fully charged before proceeding onto the backup and flashing procedures.
These are the steps you need to backup/wipe/flash manually.
It will become second nature to you quite quickly.
This is from xBeerdroidx's guide I sent you.
Backup all your pictures and music to your computer before doing any of this so you don't lose it.
1. Power off your device.
2. Press and hold Volume Up + Home + Power buttons at the same time.
3. Release the power button when the device vibrates and you see the blue script in the top left corner
4. You are now in custom recovery.
5. In CWM go to Backup and Restore and select Backup.
6. After backup is finished, select reboot system now or stay in recovery to continue with this guide.
*NOTE: Be sure to save a copy of this backup to your computer and/or micro sd card. Having a recent backup saved to your computer and micro SD card can be useful if something happens to your phones internal memory.
1. If you are not already in recovery, boot in now (Vol Up + Home + Power. Release the power button at vibrate and when you see the blue script in the top left corner).
In CWM:
2. Select Wipe data/factory reset
3. Select Wipe Cache
4. Select Advanced and Wipe Dalvik Cache
5. Select Mounts and Storage and format /system
6. If you are transitioning from 4.1 to 4.2 or 4.2 to 4.1, you must also format /data. You will lose all personal data so back it up first.
7. From the main recovery screen:
>>CWM - Choose the "install .zip from SD Card" or "install .zip from external SD card" option (depending on where you placed the files) then navigate to the ROM file, select it and confirm.
8. If you need to flash gapps, repeat step 5 and select the gapps package.
9. Reboot system. It will take several minutes to load so be patient and don't worry. Once the phone is booted, let it sit for 5 minutes, reboot and enjoy!
Hello. As you can guess, I need help.
I'm trying to install a custom rom, but the installation seem to stop on the aroma installer
quick background :
I have already installed custom roms on a few other devices ( kindle fire, HTC desire, and desire HD )
First time trying it on my Note2 N7100.
I spent about 5/6 hours reading the forums, trying to sort out what I was going to do. Here is what I tried.
I start from stock, never touched 4.1.2
I use Odin and flash Philz recovery 6.07.9
Reboot on said recovery, go to wipe and clean to install new rom
install rom, select zip from external SDCARD
Select DitoNote3
aroma start ...
I see conditions, accept
I see changelog, press next.
And nothing happens. Screen stay the same, installer doesn't respond to anything or gives any sign of being installing anything.
After about 5 minutes, I decided to reboot the phone. I can still reboot in recovery.
I tried with phoenix rom. Pretty much the same, except if happened when I pressed backup EFS
So, is this step supposed to be extra long and without any indication about what is happening ?
Is there anything that can make the aroma installer crash like that ?
Any help welcome.
In the meantime, I will be downloading pre-rooted stock and try to flash one of those.
Edit : I am now considering the possibility that readng and external SDcard is what's causing crashs. But I do not have rom images on the phone memory, and already wiped system.
Any way to access internal memory from recovery to copy rom and try flashing purely from internal memory ?
It is a bug in recovery with Aroma. You have to use version 5.xx not 6.xx.

He he he. .
As dalanik said... it's a "bug" or perhaps u can say a wellknown issue with aroma installer.
Just try again and again. It will work.

Most 4.3-Roms work best with Philz 5.15 as many developers suggest in their installation advice. :good:

Thank you all !
As you suggested, running philz 5.15 worked.
Sorry I missed that point when reading. Or rather, I supposed Roms maker where suggesting 5.15 recovery because it was the only one available at the time they wrote the guide, and I might as well go for the latest version.
