Ahoy! I apologize in advance if this question has been asked and answered before (I'm sure it has - but I couldn't find exactly what I'm looking for via search.)
I currently have the Android Revolution HD v2.0.13 ROM installed.
I'm now looking to install Version 3.0. A 'full wipe' is suggested when flashing 3.0. I remember doing this via ClockworkMod recovery when I changed from my Stock ROM to ARHD, but I've forgotten exactly how to do it.
I see there are a lot of wipe/format options in ClockworkMod Recovery, but I just don't know exactly which one to use.
Any help would be much appreciated!
Bonus Question!: I've only had my phone for three weeks or so. The SD card has gotten /extremely/ messy due to faults of my own, mainly just lazyness. I'd like to just wipe the SD card of all data and start again fresh and clean. Is this possible? If so, how do I do it and will it mess up my ROM or anything? I'm OK with losing ALL my data and just having a freshly-installed ROM and nothing else.
Just go into clockword mod and choose install rom off sd or second option is to power off device and then hold down volume down key and power on...this will enable recovery console and there you can do a full wipe and then flash new rom ....make sure new rom is already on sd card.
As for sd card im not entirely sure but think you should be ok if you really wanted to wipe it....but probably be better off just trying to tidy it up .....up to you though
hope this helped
Yeah, I know how to get into Clockworkmod Recovery and all, but to actually perform a 'full wipe', I don't know what option to choose specifically.
Thanks though!
......wipe data/factory reset is the one to choose.
Hi,
You can either format your SD via ROM-Manager or CWM there's definitely an option for doing that but I can't remember where exactly!

Also wipe /cache and /dalvik-cache, these are actually the most important as this is where files reside that may cause you problems as it's not overwritten by flashing a new ROM.
As for clearing out the SD card, go ahead and format it if you want, the ROM will install all required folders on boot up so don't worry about losing anything important
safestrap is uninstalled

Hey all XDA members
Im sorry to ask any of you this but please help me !!
I had no problems rooting my phone with unrevoked and just left it at that but knowing me i downloaded a app on android market place called... ROM MANAGER - clockworkmod or whatever .. it seemed ok i went to backup my phone to my sd card and it said i had 897mb of storage left ... so i thought great ill back it up now so i wont brick my phone and if i ever did i could back up it said it finished succesfully or what not turns off my phone then every time it boots i get telstra next G boot logo then after abit it re F$#cking starts.. excuse my french i can access recovery menu and even clockworksmod recovery tryed formating the cache and everything
ATM im paying for a brick per month and it just seems so easy to fix but im obviously mistaken .. I really dont know what to do i wanna send it to htc but dont know how they would respond if they found clockworkmod in the recovery menu I dont even care if i have to pay them just so i can get my desire back ...
FAQS that ive learnt about this issue so far
#1 it makes a bootloop because i didnt have enough storage on my sd card so im puting the blame atm with the guys at clockmod for not giving users a clear warning that if you dont have enough memorey it will cause a boot loop ... and they make you pay for the app ... go figure >.>
Have you tried restoring the backup you made? This normally happens after the very first backup.
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
If you made a backup, power off device -> hold down the volume-down and start the device. There you can select Recovery (using volume rocker). And in recovery you will be able to restore your backup.
If you don't have a backup, you can connect the phone to computer, in recovery you can mount usb storage, and copy a rom from your computer to your sd-card and flash it.
The general flow is to make a nand backup right after rooting, in case you have that just restore it and everything should be fine. The backup should be @600MB. If now just flash an official rom with a RRU and then root again.

Do a Full Wipe, Full Wipe means:
wipe data/factory reset -- yes
wipe cache Partition -- yes
advanced --> wipe Dalvik Cache
and, if you want to: --> wipe Battery Stats
I have the same problem.
I have just backed up my orange branded desire and its in a boot loop all the time.
What do i have to do????
I am getting soo worried now
Good evening,
before I start:
HTC Desire HD
Orange Branded
Clockwordmod Recovery
I was out and about today when I recieved a nice message telling me there was a system update to download and install. I got within WiFi signal and downloaded it. when I tried to run it, it kept hanging on the ClockwordMod (CWM) Recovery page. First it told me that it couldn't mount the SD card where the update was stored. So I mounted the SD card through CWM and tried again. This time it told me that it couldn't be verified. So I turned that off too. Then it told me something else didn't work so I disabled that (sorry, I can't remember but it begins with 'A'). I tried a final time to install the update but it wouldn't work still.
Then the phone wouldn't load. It just hung on the HTC white screen for about ten mins with no movement.
I removed the battery, reloaded by pressing Vol Down + On. I have tried every menu item but the loader tells me that an image (beginning with P****.zip) is missing. It lets me load the clockworkmod recovery page so I have tried to restore a backup that I made about a week ago. It restored it, (or so it said) but when I then told it to reload it still hangs on the HTC white screen.
It's now been hanging for ten mins and I'm just leaving it.
Does it just need to be left for a long time to reload from the HTC white screen?
If it does not reload, how can I get it to?
Many thanks for your impending help!
You havent bricked your phone, a bricked phone wont power on! For future reference, remember, you cannot flash an ota update with a custom recovery installed. As you have found out it messes your device up. Ok you have 2 options.
1. Try a full wipe from the mounts and storage menu. Then try to restore your backup.
2. Flash a custom rom from recovery.

Would you happen to know where I can get the Orange ACE Rom from?
I've tried to install the Cyanogen Mod but that has got me no further.
I downloaded the most uptodate build of Cyanogen Mod (7) and copied it to my SD Card.
Through ClockworkMod Recovery I installed Cyanogen Mod and it told me that it had been successful. I restarted the phone and it got past the HTC white screen.....
I was very excited until it is not sat here on the Cyanogen Mod screen which just loads over and over again repeatedly.
Any other ideas please? I suspect I need the Orange ACE Stock Rom....is it available?
did you wipe your phone before trying to flash the new roms as AndroHero suggested?
if not try that first (you can do it via clockwork recovery or via easy full wipe from mero01 -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=868720)

yes, the only thing I didn't wipe was the SD card because that's where the rom / backup is stored. Do i need to completely wipe that then put the backup back on there?
as far as i know, it shouldn't be necessary. but i'm not really sure, sorry.
you could try formatting your sd card, wouldn't hurt, but maybe it would be better to wait for someone with more knowledge about android than me.

Thanks for your help so far. I am trying everything. If I could find the actual Orange Stock Rom (Ace) then I might get somewhere. I don't want to install a custom rom if not necessary.
EDIT: I have found an Orange Stock Rom (RUU). How do i install it?
I can only get to the bootloader screen so do I plug the USB cable in at this point and run the RUU from the PC once the drivers have installed? Do I put the RUU on the SD card and somehow run it from there?
i think this is the newest stock rom : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=969374&highlight=orange+rom
but as AndroHero already mentioned, i think you can't flash stock RUUs with cwm recovery.
p.s. did you give easy wipe from the link from my previous post a try ?

I must admit that i've not yet tried the Easy Wipe. At the moment I am downloading an older stock Rom (the one that was on there before this happened) and am following some other instructions to extract the PD98IMG.ZIP which appears to be missing.
I DID go through CWM to competely wipe everything with the exception of the SD card and i managed to almost get CyanogenMod working....it would work for about 20seconds before reloading again....very strange. It has given me hope though. I tried wiping everything before doing the restore of my original backup but still nothing.
the download is taking ages so I'll give easy wipe a go.....wait....
SOLVED
thank you for all who helped.
I solved this problem by downloading an older Orange Stock Rom from the link above. After that, I followed instructions in: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841890 and reinstalled the rom.zip that it mentions. Sure enough, I am back to where I started about 3 weeks ago but because everything was backed up to the cloud I really don't mind at all. Sure, I have to root it with VISIONary again to remove all the apps that Orange have stuffed in but I can cope with that.
In fact, the worst thing is that I completed Angry Birds and Angry Birds Seasons and now i have no proof!!
Thanks again all.
glad that you could finally solved it!
i, too just lost all my angry birds saves because i just downgraded so that i could root my dhd
OK the last few days I finally rooted tried a few ROMS and seem to run into all sorts of issues that have got me to this point...
Redux: Home and Search Buttons stop working
CM7: Cannot get Marketplace
Oxygen: Will not load
Miui: Did not like it
Now I cannot clear Davlik Cache which I am sure is causing a lot of issues. I never made an original back up before all this.
Question: How do I clear all this crud off as if I never installed a ROM and was going to for the first time? How do I get access to Dalvik Cache? I just want CM7 or Redux to work and not have any issues but I obviously did something wrong at some points. If I clear all the contents off my SD card except the Redux install will I be free and clear? Or is there something in the phones internals I need to do also?
I am also tempted to just return it to complete stock and start all over if I have to. Any suggestions would be great and appreciated. If you need more info let me know....

I have an evo so Idk your procedure to get to your recovery image but that's where u need to go when u rooted u should have installed one hopefully amon recovery then once u get into recovery there will be a wipe option then do all the wipe options and u will have a clean cache and be ready to install a new rom. And as far as cm7 goes with u not having a market u gotta make sure u flash the gapps after u boot into the rom so its a 2 part process. Im sure that if u search engine u can find a guide specific to your phone explaing how to access the recovery from a phone off state. But id guess that if u hold vol down while pressing power it will prolly pop up with the bootloader then u can pick recovery from the menu but Idk for sure cuz I don't have ur phone but im sure there is a guide for u if use a search engine

have you been flashing each rom over the other without doing any wipes?
The first ROM or two I did without a wipe (noob)
I flashed GAPPS twice and still no market but all other Google Apps. Besides that CM7 was good. I did run into an issue where I could not sync with GMAIL but factory reset took care of that.
Also I am on Unrevoked
- For each flash it is better to wipe everything including "dalvik cache".
- Have you read the prerequisites of each ROM before flashing like recommended radio+RIL, S-Off+nand partition table (CM7, Bravo, etc.), and/or EXT partition/s?
It would be very wise to read/learn and ask around first before doing anything st*p*d which could brick your Desire.
Now...to have at least a working desire.
Flash a rooted stock ROM if you do not have any EXT partition.
[edit] or any simple A2SD+ ROM if you have an EXT partition on your SD-Card. Stay away from Data2EXT, Data2whatever, CM7, etc.at this point of time because you need to learn more first. [end of edit]
Learn more and flash the any ROM you want after proper preparations
Thanks..
Like I said though Dalvik cache will not get wiped as Recovery keeps telling me it cannot mount, but will mount the card.
One thing I never did was partition the SD card and its just one big mess. I think a lot of stuff has been installed on the actual Desire itself.

Just wipe everything from recovery, and I would also wipe and reformat the sd.
Then you can flash whatever with no conflicts!
Hi everybody,
I like other people have had memory limitation issues with my HTC Desire.
Done everything including root, s-off, partitioned sd card.I am now trying to upgrade to CM 7.1, the final step hopefully!!!
Note:I am currently using stock 2.3.3
Currently have CM 7.1 downloaded on computer and going to install....BUT every instruction I see requires me to have rom manager/ clockworkmod recovery. However, I can't install these because ''this app can't be installed in your country''. unfortunately used to this.
So does anyone by chance have any links to instructions or have instructions of how I can install this without downloading any apps, hopefully an idiot proof version.(Not worried about saving a recovery etc....phone is basically blank.)
Thanks in advance for any help.
Kind Regards,
rkdeane
Put it on your SD card. Flash from recovery. See the CM wiki.

So i looked on CM wiki but it wasn't clear to me.I have c/pasted what i saw below.
-By theme to they mean rom, bc didn't see any rom instructions.
-When it says copy to the root of my sd card, can i just copy the zip from my desktop to the sd card via windows, how do they mean the root of it??
-#4 , how do you flash. i see a flash image on the wiki, must i downlaod/install this??
Just double checking befor ei go experimenting and mess up soemthing.
Obviously a complete noob, but learning everyday, any help is much appreciated. thanks for the help so far guys.

from wiki:
1.Perform a Nandroid Backup before flashing any theme.
2.Download a theme you like. Check the forums.
3.Copy the zipped theme file to the root of your SD card.
4.Flash it like you would any other .zip file.
from how to use recover (wiki):
HTC Desire (GSM) Hold Volume Down and the Power button, then use Volume Down to highlight "bootloader" and press the Power button to select it. Once in the bootloader, use Volume Down to select "recovery" and press the Power button to select.

3)install .zip in sd card
it went into unrevoked and i selected the file and installed.
everything finished then exited.
but now all i get is a screen with cyanogen android guy on skateboard and and arrow going in circles around hope....looks like a screen saver that refreshed like every 5 seconds......so what do i do now????? seems soemhting did not go as planned.
Did you wipe? Read what I said last post

no did not wipe....have nothing installed on phone....and i cleared everything off of sd card before i put on the cm 7.1 zip...
unfortunately your post came acouple mins after i attempted !! as luck would have it.
goign through your faq's now to see if i can sort it out.....
cant get passed the screen saver....but i can get into hboot/recovery
i see your wipe comment below:
should i let it run for 10 mins?? i let it run for like 2 and figured it was just stuck.
should i do a factory reset....will that undo all my rooting and partitioning that i have done???
also can cm7.1 work with an ext4 partition??? which is what i have.
the gparted advice was excellent as well.
what is all this about wiping? Do I need to?
Maybe. If you go from one stock ROM to a custom ROM, or one Custom ROM to another, the settings may not be compatible. You can wipe from ClockworkMod Recovery. - Wipe data/factory reset.
If the ROM is stuck in a boot loop for more that 10 minutes, you may have to back to recovery and do a wipe of the Data partition
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
Yes you must factory reset. It won't affect root or anything. It just wipes the data partition

Hello all just bought a new Samsung Galaxy SII from craigslist already rooted with 4.0.3 Jedi Mind Trick. After reading for what seems 4-5 hours i have been trying to put together how to properly without bricking switching it to 10.0.0 Stable as i use to use Cyanogenmod 2-3 years ago on my devices. Seem alot of things have changed and there is a cluster**** of stuff out there now. If you could direct me to a how to or show me how to do it i would greatly appreciate it!
Thanks all!
Assuming you have nothing personal to back up that you can't just download from google play or your google account again: download cyanogen 10 and it's gapps. reboot into recovery mode. factory reset, wipe data, wipe system, wipe cache, wipe dalvik. pick the install zip from sd card or so option, browse to cyanogen, then install gapps the same way. wipe dalvik again and reboot.
I was thinking of doing this myself JMT to CM10. I didn't think there was anything special to do same as flashing from any other ROM to CM10. If there is a special requirement I would think they'd post in in with the ROM post information.

honestly - i backed up everything to my external and then formatted the internal when i went from TW to AOSP for the last time. well worth it. nice folder clean up and then you can just manually take all the stuff you want back.
and you should just be able to odin on cwm or twrp - then flash the rom of your choice.

If you get stuck at the boot logo, it's called a soft brick. You don't have to use ODIN or go back to ICS. Just make sure the ROM zip you downloaded isn't corrupt (check the size/m5d if possible), wipe everything, and reboot into recovery to try installing again.

You won't fail. Follow the guidelines step by step. Print it out, make notes. Anything. Read. The step by step guide works... that'll get you with cwm. Then, you can flash the zip you will put on your phone... either a SU zip or just a rooted ROM. Follow flashing instructions.
Just realized - you'll be way better off if, once you have cwm on, just format the internal ONCE YOU HAVE A ROM ON AN EXTERNAL SD CARD. then flash CM10. THEN you'll have a fresh AOSP install.

Please excuse my harshness but this is not as hard as many make it seem. I would say if it takes you more than a couple attempts maybe it is just not for you. I only say this because I would hate to see you mess up your phone. Now if you think a bootloop is a brick then we need to do things at a slower pace with you.
If you already have your phone rooted then
1.download goomanager from the playstore and then
2.open it up and allow it to grant permission from CM
3.hit menu button while goo manager is open
4.click on install OpenRecoveryScript
5.let it do its thing
6.reboot into your new TWRP recovery
7.Wipe/Data Factory Reset
8.Flash Rom
9.Flash Gapps
10.Reboot
You can throw in a backup of files somewhere in there if you like.... Your choice

I had a bootloop when using CWM v6.0.1.5. So a friend of mine told me he had success with CWM v6.0.1.5 Touch. So I switched to the touch recovery and... SUCCESS.
Here's the link to CWM touch and non-touch:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1893464
A boot loop could mean a bad download or bad flash but it is most definitely NOT a bricked device. All you needed to do was get a fresh download and move it to your SD card by mounting it in recovery. Then, wipe EVERYTHING but the SD. EVERYTHING. Then flash the ROM, Gapps and whatever radio. I go from CM to AOKP to other random TW roms all the time and never have issues.
The 2 best recoveries are twrp or my favorite because I'm used to it is cwm 6.0.1.5. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1844637
Also if your phone boot loops don't freak out' just either reboot to see if that works out first and if not reboot into recovery. Also with these new recoveries do not use dark side scripts.
Factory reset
Format system
Format cache
Format data
Flash ROM
Flash gapps
Reboot and enjoy

Sorry for the necro on the thread, but I didn't want it to be stated I didn't look around some either.
I am going from JMT to CM and want to make sure it's as seamless as possible. I use CWM and usually usually use darkside complete wipes, but I read in a previous post not to use darkside. Is there a reason for this? I can't see why this wouldn't work as it's just a wipe.
Also I use Titanium Backup. Is it possible to backup my apps and data and restore them since its not TW any longer? I want to be able to restore as much of my data as possible and make sure I don't lose it.
P.S. - If thread necroing is not appreciated, I apologize.
