[Q] Help rooting my droid incredible; and ROM help. - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, my S3 just broke the other day and I grabbed one of these on Ebay.
I have been unable to find a reliable guie to root the phone. All the links in the guides seem to point to unrevoked, which is unavailable it seems and throws a 404 everywhere.
I'd also appreciate some help with ROM selection. Features are not that important, but stability is. I only use the phone for Calls, Gmail, Maps, SMS and browsing. I'd like to use one of the CM 10 or 10.1 based rom's (I hate the sense UI). But if there is none sufficiently stable, can someone point to a fairly basic but stable AOSP ICS build> Thanks a lot.

Steps 1-8 should be all that's needing if you're just trying to root. Since it mentions specifically Gingerbread 2.3.4 and a particular version of Unrevoked, it's a start. Or you can go to htcdev.com and follow the instructions there to unlock your bootloader and flash recovery via fastboot.

[Q] Rooting, downgrading, market enabling?!

Hi. I have searched the forum, and checked google for possible answers for about 2 days but haven't come up with something I can use.
I got my HTC Desire a couple of days ago and soon upgraded it to froyo. However being from Denmark i realized that I do not have the option to purchase apps, which leaves me with some demos and apps I would like to buy the full versions off.
I then browsed the topic and saw that my best option was to root my phone and give it a custom rom.
After all methods had failed me I browsed a little more to find out that none of the methods I had used would work on 2.2.
I then found some nice guides about downgrading but all of those said something like: Don't do this if your phone is either *gibberish* or *lots of numbers*.
So basically that leaves me with a bunch of questions:
1. Is there a way to enable the market without rooting/flashing until there is a way to just root 2.2 (this is without buying a foreign sim card)
2. IS there a way to root 2.2 that I simply missed?
3. is there a way to downgrade at which I do not have to fear utter destruction and chaos.
4. Why does google not love me back
I have the same problem
someone? please.
I too could do with a guide on how to downgrade from OTA froyo (hboot 0.92) in order to root and flash a custom rom. Battery life isnt really acceptable in the stock froyo and I could do with sideloading one or two apps from my hero.

Yes, but it's not a one-click-solution. You need to downgrade to hboot 0.80/Android 2.1, then root your phone, then flash any cooked ROM you like.
Read all the details here.

[Q] Rooting advice

I have an EVO running 1.47.651.1. I used Unrecover3 to root it and have the WiFi tether app working. I don't think this took care of the NAND unlock though.
I'd like to get to a stock 2.2 ROM that's rooted, just to keep wifi tethering working and get some of the Froyo improvements, but don't want to lose camera functionality (3MP vs 8MP), break any of the radios, etc. along the way.
Unrecover3 installed the ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.0.1 recovery ROM, which enabled me to do a nandroid backup of my current environment.
My understanding is that from this point I need to NAND unlock and flash a rooted 2.2 ROM (please correct me if I'm wrong).
Is there a single comprehensive guide that will take me from 1.47.651.1 to 2.2, preserving ROOT, without any fancy ROM hacks other than the minimum required to keep wifi tethering working?
Sorry for the n00b questions; there are a LOT of guides and threads here and I just don't want to follow the wrong one and brick a new $500+ phone.
look into unrevoked forever, i think this might help you, if not then correct me.
Simple Root
I don't know too much about unrevoked. I rooted using Simple Root. It is very easy. I would suggest you reroot using this method, which will give you nand unlocked.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=720565
After you gain root, you can flash a stock 2.2 ROM (search dev forum) I rooted a long time ago so I'm not sure if the newest version of Simple Root will update your radios (Read the thread/site, it may mention it). Search forums to find the latest radio verions and confirm that yours match.
After your have 2.2, I highly recommend that you flash netarchy's custom kernel, which will fix audio streaming, as well as significantly boost FPS, which will make your phone feel like a new phone. You can find that kernel here:

Good luck.

+1 for simpleroot
I highly recommend: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741294. There have been people stating they've been having problems with simple root.
This TUT looks overly simple. If you are unsure about how to get adb working or how to work with it...just reply here or feel free to PM me.
"You will need to have the android sdk installed, as you will need to use the adb tool."
I'm a lost noob looking to do exactly what rjhollan was asking for. I followed your link to that thread but was lost immediately. I've been reading and searching to try and avoid asking dumb questions but I'm lost on this now. Any help appreciated. I was at least quick enough to deactivate OTA updates so I'm at 1.47....
You got Root and NAND unlocked

Perhaps you used "unrEVOked3" not unrecover3...
unrEVOked3 will give you Root and NAND unlock.
I would suggest doing the unrEVOked forever now.
Look at your ROM Manager and and DOWNLOAD ROM in the program. I would suggest "Fresh".

[Q] Stock 2.2 or Cyanogen - also advice on upgrading?

Although I am tempted by Cyanogen, I was reading through their forum about one or two issues so am still a little unsure about it.
Can I just ask a couple of things:
1) What are the general advantages of cyanogen over stock firmware? i.e. what extra features if any and do you lose any functions?
2) How easy is it to upgrade my rooted T-Mobile wildfire to a stock unbranded version of 2.2 without losing root and keep the ability to revert back to branded stock firmware (including the bootloader) for warranty purposes if needed?
Many thanks in advance
Hey,
Some advantages are: overclocking, more work memory (i had about 90-110 memory on stock froyo, about 170-190 with CM now), all the useless slow apps running in sense are gone, general smoother feel, live wallpapers, being able to install themes to make your UI a bit nicer, ...
You can re-install the stock sense ROM afterwards if you want (although I doubt you will want to, most people like the improvement after a custom ROM ). And as far as I know, when you use the revolutionary tool ( http://revolutionary.io/ ) to S-off, you can revert that and get the original bootloader back for warranty issues. However I have not done this myself, but I recall reading it here (others, correct me if i'm wrong ) *edit* http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1160251
Many thanks Wolfway
Cyanogen sounds great from what you say - have you had any issues with the stock browser on it? I must admit I have tried dolphin/skyfire/opera etc but tend to like the stock one the most generally?
Also, I know you have to install the Google apps separately but can you install them individually afterwards as I think I'd only use GMail, Maps and Market (are there any others? I don't use many other stock apps than those). I know you can get Maps as an apk and Gmail was on the market I think?
Or is it just easier to install the Google Apps zip file from Cyanogen?
As long as I can go back to a stock firmware and can just try it then I can see no harm in at least giving it a try...
Just one other thing about the Revolutionary, does reverting it to S-On also take off the 'Revolutionary' line in the Boot loader so there's no evidence of the S-Off having taken place?
About the restore, I cannot help you as I have not tried nor did I read topics about that, I suggest you go ask in the specific topics
You have to flash google apps (you can find the correct files on the cyanogenmod wiki's). You cannot download the apps from the market as the market is included in the google apps file to flash... when you boot after installing the google apps it asks you which to download however. Maps, chrome to phone, ... so if you do not want one it will not install.
And I actually have never used the brower on stoyo froyo or cyanogenmod 7. I use opera mini, but do not browse often on the internet, I mainly use apps for the stuff I need

Root the phone

I am really sick and tired of all of the bloatware that htc and t-mobile adds to the phone.
I want to remove this useless apps and i found out that i need root access for this, i googled and found a lot of information on how to root htc m8 however the information is old, and i want to know if this will work on the latest tmobile version of software (6.0 android).
If nothing changed and i need to use all in one tool, should i change the recovery or can i use the stock recovery.
Finally if i will use the custom recovery i might install a custom rom, most probably lineage os. Will the dual camera work on this rom, or i need to install a seance ui custom rom for the camera to work.
thank you
October 2016 I took the plunge and rooted my M8. I am using Insert Coin Enhanced ROM and it is great. Very snappy performance, battery life is way longer than before and WiFi calling works, too.
Now, I was nervous and waited a long time, reading as much as I could before doing it. Even found a legit YouTube video from a guy named sakitech that gave a step-by-step for Mac users (which is me).
Rooting has been good, ICE ROMs has updated several times since then, even for the M8.
Good luck!

Thank you for the reply, few questions if you don't mind.
Did you enable s-off, how if yes ?
Or does insert coin rom works with s-on

New Nexus 7 (2013) - How to Unlock, Root, What ROM, etc?

Looking to unlock, root and flash this device. There seems to be a lot of guides but not many of them are very recent. What's the simplest and cleanest way to do this? Is there any Android 7 ROMs that are completely stable and as vanilla as possible? Sorry if there is already a post out there answering these questions but I couldn't find any concentrated up-to-date guide on the procedures to follow. I plan to use this device for work and school so I need the ROM to be fully functional, reliable, and secure. (A lot of posts seemed to mention Youtube and camera issues but they seemed super old). I haven't done any rooting or flashing since the OG Droid so I'm a bit out of touch but not totally oblivious to the process. If you just hook me up with some recommended links, I can probably take it from there!
Thanks for any help!
The simplest, cleanest, safest, and fastest way to unlock the bootloader and root is to use the Nexus root toolkit. Sadly 6.0.1 is the newest official system update so you would probably be best off installing one of the custom ROMs that are available. I recently installed the latest version of SLIM 6. After installing that you can re root using the same technique. Slim 6 is really minimal and you can install GAPPS after performing the other tasks I mentioned
