Reluctant to root (noob question)

I found the cheapest Desire in the UK is at 3uk/payg - 350 Sterling
...but apparently it comes locked to the 3 network, so, before I buy I thought I'd ask:
Noob Questions:
Will rooting take care of unlocking/make it SIM Free? What about rooting AND changing the ROM? (MUST the ROM be replaced when rooting?)
Is there a way to install a stock ROM? (the new ROMs look great but are still early builds - I think the best is yet to come and would rather wait, for now)
If, as promised, the Desire gets an OTA update to support apps2SD and/or divX, etc in the future, will I have to wait for a custom ROM based on the update because I rooted the device?

Rooting should unlock it - perhaps others can step in to ensure that. The last step in the root process is installing a rooted ROM. Paul's default ROM that gets flashed in that step is nothing but the stock Desire ROM (the one from HTC direct) modded to allow root. Sounds like that's what you want.
If the Desire later gets updated and you want it, you will have to wait for HTC to come out with an official update, or (since you're rooted), you'll most likely be able to get it sooner via the rooting community. HTC has to take time and make sure everything's perfect with Sense, etc. before they release an update. The root community doesn't usually have that hold time.
If you do wait for an official ROM from HTC, there's a chance installing that after rooting will revert your root, i.e. you'll lose access to the extra fun stuff.

3's Desire's are 100% unbranned and unlocked. I've got one right here and checked it just now with an o2 sim and it worked, although I do actually use my 3 sim in it! They get them stock from HTC and bundle a SIM card pack with them - According to 3 Blog. That may well change in the future, but it was the case when I picked mine up last Sunday.

what is this extra fun stuff? apps to SD? (doesn't really affect me). What else? What am I missing. No idea of the real advantages of rooting so hoping to learn about the practical applications of rooting.

Unlocked/rooted my phone but new to custom ROMs, have some questions

Hey guys, I recently bought an HTC One V to replace my old Android phone. Last weekend I unlocked the bootloader and rooted it so I could enable wifi tethering, now I’m thinking about trying on some new ROMs but since I never flashed to one before on any phone I had some general questions about what I can/can’t do and what to expect along the way.
1. It’s important for me to make sure I have a backup of the stock ROM I’m currently on in case none of the custom ones suit me or don’t work as well. Last weekend when I flashed TWRP to recovery and believe I made a backup of stock before rooting, I know I was following a tutorial and they said it was optional but I should do it just in case for the same reasons I listed above. Is this considered doing a “Nandroid backup”, and with these backups is the ROM and all installed apps backed up as well, so when flashing back to it it restores the ROM and whatever was installed at the time so apps don’t need to be re-downloaded?
2. When on a custom ROM and wanting to revert back to stock is the procedure the same as going to a custom? I thought I saw something about having to relock the bootloader if wanting to go back to stock.
3. When looking around for custom ROMS to try out do I need to make sure that it’s compatible specifically with my phone model or generally speaking do all custom Android-based ROMs work on any Android OS phone or tablet?
4. Are there some ROMS built around doing a specific task? Like for me I want to concentrate on making sure my phone’s mobile hotspot runs as smoothly as possible for tethering and having a functional bluetooth profile is important as well. Without asking “What ROM is best” can someone recommend a ROM that best fits my criteria that I should try out?
5. Will I need to re-root my phone whenever I flash to a new ROM? And when doing a Nandroid backup while rooted is the root access backed up as well?
6. Is there an app available that keeps track of the ROMs I download and allows for flashing to them easily?
7. Does GApps need to be flashed to the phone after going to a new custom ROM everytime, or do some ROMs include the GApps in them already?
Any other tips, tricks, or explanation on something you don’t think I’m “getting” would be great. Thanks a bunch for any help.

Well, I have only had motorola with android, but maybe i can help you with some of your questions
3) No, each custom rom is made for a specific model, so you have to search the roms that are made for your phone/tablet, flashing a wrong rom may be an easy way for killing your device
5) Most roms are pre-rooted, at least all of the roms i used on my motorolas were pre-rooted, i guess that with htc things must be simillar.
6) It depends, some roms (like cyanogenmod) does not include GApps, so you have to flash them after you install the rom, others have GApps included, so you must see if the rom you're installing has GApps included.

1) Use Titanium Backup for the apps' backup .
2) You should flash the stock rom of that phone and then relock the bootloader.
6) I don't know any app to do this, but it can exist, idk.

Noob ROM user - help with 1st ROM install, please

Hope this the right place to post - please let me know if not.
I have the Sprint G3. I rooted (being a first time rooter at that time) within a few weeks of getting the phone. Frankly, I don't recall how I rooted it, but I think it was using Stump'd. In any case, root went fine, installed, SU, and been using some of the Framework apps like tweaksbox.
Okay, here's what I need some help with:
I think I need to unroot the phone, return it to factory stock, and then reroot before flashing a ROM to it. Is that correct?
I've seen a couple of threads here with instructions, but I don't follow/understand much of the terminology. Hence, is this page good to use to help me - http://lgg3root.com/lg-g3-root/how-t...nbrick-lg-g3/?

First lets start with returning to Stock ROM. No, no you definitely do not need to return to stock factory ROM to flash a new one. Since you already are rooted all you need is a TWRP recovery.
To flash TWRP recovery to your device (Sprint G3) use this thread:

It's very easy for a begginer to achive this. If you don't want to use adb, fell free to download flashify and flash the downloaded TWRP image from thread above with it.
It's even easier with flashify.
Yes CM ROM is lighter, closer to stock android, not the LG one. If you really want better battery experience you should also look up different kernels, different governors, more adavanced stuff, nothing too much.
You don't need to be scared of flashing ROMs. It's a very basic task these days.
Losing data, calling ability or other thing is very unlikely. Of course mistakes happen so be careful. First thing to do before flashing anything on your device after instaling your TWRP recovery is to do a backup.
ALWAYS DO A BACKUP OF ALL IMPORTANT PARTITIONS ON YOUR DEVICE.

Yes, they do come with custom kernels.
But you could change kernel for some other one if you wish for.
I personally use Blisspop 3.7 on my LG G3 D855 with kernel that came with it 777 by 777jon.

Wanting to remove root

Hi there
have had my P8000 for a day now and just installed my barclays banking app which i often use only to see that the phone is rooted
I'm not really bothered about having root access if i'm honest just would like my banking app to work. Does anyone know how to remove root access from this phone this is how it was shipped to me from Geekbuying

Right it would appear that my phone is not rooted using various tools to check but the barclays banking app still says it is

it might just be that the Barclays app doesn't like your Chinese hardware/software but if you really want you can try to reflash the stock rom which is now available from elephone. there are two versions, 20150719 & 20150725 I believe from here:-

Did you ever solve this? I bought the phone as it has dual Sims and I didn't want to carry around 2 phones! Without being able to use the Barclays app, I'm having to carry my old phone anyway. Any help would be appreciated

Any idea of auxus prime p8000 how to root & flash the custom recovery...?

I've been having the same issue and here's my findings.
If you try stock rom (whatever version), Barclays apps will never work despite Root Checker says it's not rooted.
However, in another thread, I was pointed to an app called Simply Unroot and I tried it and initially it did not work.
The dev of Simply Unroot spent hours trying to figure out why Barclays app thought it was rooted but eventually, he suggested I try the FlyMe ROM.
So I put on Philz recovery, put on FlyMe, I used Simply Unroot to unroot it (since it's full-on rooted initially) and WHAM, after a reboot, the Barclays apps work fine.
I don't have enough knowledge to say why FlyMe/Philz is ok.
I don't know if it's the ROM/Recovery combo that fixes it.
I did try stock and Eragon with Philz and the Barclays apps don't work on there.
Either way, Simply Unroot app/service is fantastic.
It's a shame it's the FlyMe ROM that works since it's not very good.
Does anyone know WHY Stock ROM is seen as Rooted by Barclays whereas FlyMe is not?

Stock ROM is 'pre-rooted', at least the last two or three versions have been. They just require SuperSU to get app control - hence a few posts saying they rooted the phone by simply installing SuperSu (which it doesn't).
So it would seem that FlyMe whilst based on stock ROM doesn't have this - a good option to have. Perhaps some of it is based on the earlier 'un-rooted' stock ROMs?

The FlyMe ROM is based on the ROM for another phone altogether... er.. Meizu was it? That's why it doesn't have any ability to use the fingerprint scanner.
It's just really annoying though... banking apps aren't the only apps that have this kind of over-zealous check... there are other enterprise apps that have it.
I don't understand why the stock ROM can't be made so it is 'fully' unrooted yet have it easy to root later on.
£130 for a phone that is super fast and does everything flagships can do but I can't use it/recommend it since it can't run apps that most people consider necessary.

im gonna root my note 4, and in the notifications it always says to activate the phone, since i havent activated the phone because i just recently switched to verizon. You shouldn't have any problems activating your phone after putting a new ROM on it, as long as the ROM will work with Verizon. For stability, security, and the the fewest bugs, I suggest a ROM based on the most recent Stock Verizon ROM: N910VVRU2CQL1

All these probably are very similar and each one may explain certain steps in a way that makes more sense to you than the others. After you've reviewed and compared all of them you'll have a better grasp of what you're doing.
