[Q] Adaway not working - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hey everyone,
I can't post this in the developmental section because I don't have enough posts so here it goes. I just updated to Carbon 1.5 beta (Sprint) from the previous version using Goo Manager. I did not do a full wipe before updating. Ever since I've updated to this ROM, Adaway is not working. It says it is full updated and all of the host files are enabled and working properly but there are still ads in every app. Is anyone else having this issue or have any suggestions for resolving it?
Thanks!

This doesnt belong in the development section so its good you couldnt post it there. You posted in the right place.
I have noticed this happen to me too. I know Google went and pulled ad blocking apps from the play store. I dont know if that would have anything to do with it but it might. I also thought it might be from the cross breeder mod I am running since that has a built in ad blocker as well. I thought it might be messing with it. But I'm not sure.

Ok I'm glad I posted in the right place. I wasn't sure if it was ROM specific as it just started happening after I flashed the latest version of Carbon. I wouldn't think it would have anything to do with Google pulling the apps from the Play Store but it is a strange coincidence

Not sure if it has to do with being pulled from the Play Store, but here is this.
Maybe you need to do the install through F-droid?.

Uninstalled and then installed through F-droid. No dice

I dunno then, I've never used that one. AdFree is simple and has never given me any problems. Why not try that?.

Just refer this thread .

Android Market 3.3.11

androidpolice.com/2011/11/01/download-android-market-3-3-11-adds-new-settings-default-auto-update-update-over-wi-fi-only-shortcuts-and-more/
Can't post the link, sorry!
link: http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/1...te-update-over-wi-fi-only-shortcuts-and-more/
Installed this earlier today. Seems to be working good so far. I like the Auto update option over wifi setting. It also seems to be more responsive than the 3.2 that I have been using.
Sweet, my biggest annoyance with the market was how I could only chose between auto-updating and possibly wasting my data plan (minor I know but I don't NEED the facebook update instantly) and having to manually do it. Love how MIUI has the option.

mine is working good to on MIUI I wonder how much earlier did we actually get this update from other people who will get it from their carriers?
After installing this, I started getting "popup" ads in my status bar. After uninstalling they went away.
Did I miss a setting or something? Lookout scan shows no threat, but I can only assume it was this market given the evidence...
can someone enlighten me on how to install this blasted thing?

You should be able to navigate to it in a file explorer (like rootexplorer) and just click on it to install.
Yeah I figured it out. Search-fu is lazy today lol.

gedeROM+Google Play Books?

I haven't seen anyone having my particular issue, so I'm wondering if it's to do with the root/custom ROM.
I downloaded a book from Google Play Books and it's stuck on "Loading..." at every page. I've cleared out my data, uninstalled and re-installed the app. I'm on wifi when I download, and I've got the little blue circle to fill up (apparently this means that it's available for offline reading). When I first open the book, it will display a page or two and then after that will just stay on the loading screen, even if I go back to previously read pages.
I noticed there was a Gapps package in the KFU, so I tried to re-install that, but I don't think it includes GPB.
Has anyone had this issue? Or have any thoughts on what I might do to fix it?
Thanks!
Did you happen to look at the Play Store page for GPB to see if others are having the same problem? I'm betting it has nothing to do with the ROM.

You're right - I hadn't. But doing so now doesn't turn up much - a lot of people complaining about features, a few Force Closes (which isn't my issue).
The only reason I was at all pointing at the ROM was because I thought I read somewhere about people having issues with stock gapps on their custom KFs. If that was the case, maybe it's the same problem with GPB? Just brainstorming, no actual knowledge there.

Well, I checked, and it is a known problem. In the Play Store, reviews are listed from most useful to least useful by default. When checking on known issues, especially regarding recent updates, you need to make sure the reviews are listed from newest to oldest. Quite a few people can't read their books anymore, have a look. There is even an option to show only reviews for the most recent update. Which in this case, happens to be yesterday.
Just something to think about.

Ad blockers removed from the Play Store by Google

Seems Google says no to ad blockers: http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/0...purging-ad-blocking-apps-from-the-play-store/
Here is the link to F-Droid as the dev of AdAway suggests to use in case anyone wants it: "AdAway was removed from Google Play. I received an email from Google Play that AdAway was removed due to "Violation of section 4.4 of the Developer Distribution Agreement." Thus, it will never be available on Google Play again. Please switch to the open alternative: F-Droid, and install AdAway with F-Droid" http://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdfilter=adaway&fdid=org.adaway
Meh there is always side loading.. Google can block apps from the play store but can't block them entirely

I know. I was just posting to give a heads up. I flash a bunch of ROMs, and sometimes do clean installs (mostly dirty nighties), and go to the Play Store to my "ALL" tab to easily download my apps, and AdAway is one of the first ones I grab. Now it won't be found, so now we know why.

Titanium backup! Can restore your ad blocker and every other app you like. No downloading required.

Thanks for the info, I hadn't realized that yet. On a related subject, do you know why one of the build in sources for AdAway stopped connecting today? is that possibly something google did as well. I suddenly started noticing full screen ads in some of my apps so I checked AdAway and it says that the ismeh one is not available anymore. It might just be coincidence but that just started today so I thought it was worth mentioning.
I have noticed this as well. I am getting ads as of yesterday. Only 3/4 sources works.

Which source are you using? I'm on 3/4 now, and everything is working correctly. I checked for updates, but it says newest hosts files enabled. Although it did happen once before. The way I fixed it was to FC app, clear cache and data, reboot, and re-download the blocking files (and of course reboot once new files are done downloading, and have been applied).
Like my original post said I was using the built in (default ) sources.
I found the solution through the AdAway issue tracker. https://code.google.com/p/ad-away/issues/detail?id=413&sort=-id
That issue has a comment which points to: http://adaway.sufficientlysecure.org/hosts.txt
which is a copy of the original ismeh host list, once you add that as a source it starts blocking again.

Sorry I read it too fast.
This news made me highly upset. It supports developers, in a forceful way.
I just ran adaway from my TB backup after flashing a rom. Worked perfect. No errors downloading hosts. Ads gone...as much as before anyway.

Yeah they put the host list that had been down back up, in the file itself the header even says "14-03-2013 Back from the dead"
Yeah I second TB. First thing I thought when I read this in the morning. Screw Google doing that. I tether and it keeps chrome on my desktop from showing ads. One of the best options about android being taken away. That sucks. I hope the developers for the apps keeps updating sources. Adaway has been great so far.

Since its open source, somebody is providing updates for the app.
And also I noticed that one of the hosts sources is back online

[Q] adaway app not fully loading Amazon website/app

i have a rooted xperia play and have used the adaway ad blocker app for a couple of years with no problems
but suddenly I cannot access fully the amazon (shopping) app or internet version , I can browse amazon etc
but it will not load up any of the images for the products, if I disable ad blocking on adaway it works fine but as soon
as I enable the ad blocking it no longer loads up any of the amazon photos, can anyone out there please help

I added "*images-amazon*" to the whitelist and they load up again now. (Not got an xperia play myself, but this thread came up in a search before I had a go at a fixing it on my own)

How do you add things to white list in adaway?
Edit: nevermind, I figured it out. Thanks for your post.

Many thanks for this quick fix! I suspected this was the case(nexus 5), and a quick google brought me to your post. No time wasted due to you.
Thanks this worked. I don't have a Xperia device. I have a Note 3. I searched Google for this issue and this page came up. I've had this problem before and later Adaway hosts updates fixed it, hopefully this fix will be permanent.
Excellent. I had the same problem on my s3. Updating adaway solved it

Unfortunately, Google play services has stopped

I'm trying to determine whether google play services stops because of the ROM or because of xposed mods I'm using. Its happening frequently but doesn't really affect much. There's no apps crashing. Its just mildly annoying needing to dismiss the message.
Are others experiencing this? Thought it might be the app amplify so I disabled it but the message still appears. Right now my mods areEnable call recording in CM, xposed torch, greenify, and YouTube adaway.

No, you're not the only one having that issue. In the CM11 for Fire Phone thread you can see people were reporting it. At least for now, since the ROM is beta, we can't expect it to work flawlessly.
P.S.: For the next threads you open in this forum, for Fire Phone or for any other device, it'd be better if you specify if you're rooted and if you used a custom ROM. Otherwise it could cause confusion. Someone reading this question could think stock FireOS has these issues.

Need root for xposed. I was gonna say xposed wouldn't work on fire os but I actually do use it on fire TV so I know that's probably not true. But you're right. Next time I'll give more details.
Beta is typically prone to bugs but I didn't get the "stopped working" message until last note, after activating xposed. Even that's not a clear cut trouble shoot because I've had ROMs run problem free for days then issues arise.
But overall, I am extremely pleased with CM 11! everything I use is working great.
On a side, off topic note, anyone found a way to install milk music on this?

That's weird. I'm using CM11 too, rooted and with Xposed and I don't get the "stopped working" notification. Maybe it's another thing. I remember that when I installed the Android Wear app Google Play Services crashed every 2 seconds (no joke, and no fun).
And about Milk Music, isn't that like asking for Live on YouTube - By Xperia™ to be available on non-Sony phones?

There's an xposed mod called chocolate milk that enables milk to run on many devices but far as I can see its a little dated and not sure which version works (the newest apk from playstore does not install),or if its even supported anymore. Not something I need but trying some new things.
Edit--actually I'm not 100% on the play store apk because I couldn't get apk downloader to fetch it on my Mac. I did pull a couple from other sources and those didn't work.
Oops- this was supposed to be for Milk Music install. Sorry guys!0 uhhh...Nevermind. I'm good.
I tried this way-
http://nexus5.wonderhowto.com/how-t...music-app-any-android-no-root-needed-0158456/
The apk's did install, I was able to open the milk app, but no sound would play and it prompted that this version was no longer supported and to download the newest version from the play store. This might work for anyone om CM 11, but I couldn't get to the play store to update, it always links you to amazon store. When I opened the play store it wouldn't show to download. There are tricks to change build props with root explorer if you google it. I am not rooted yet so I can''t give it a try. If you click a blank spot the pop up would go away, but the sound wouldn't play.
