I'm sure this has been asked somewhere, and I tried to find out for myself but I haven't been able to get a definitive answer and I'm rather careful with my phone so that is why I am asking here. I have the Sprint GNote 2 with Android version 4.1.1 and I rooted using CF Auto Root. I have installed a bunch of root programs (Busy Box, Triangle Away, etc.) and made some system modifications and simple sound file changes... now my device wants me to update to a new version of Android. So before I do that, I am assuming that I just go ahead and do the update and then go through the CF Auto Root process again... is that going to affect any of the mods I have made, do I need to keep track of what I've done so I can make the changes after each system update? I'm still learning, so any help is appreciate and sorry for the n00bish question.
Thanks.

n00b I am, as I tried asking this in the wrong forum earlier today... Anyway, here goes my question again, hopefully in the right forum this time:
I've got a Sprint Galaxy S2 and I'd like to get root access to modify a few files. The thing is, I don't want to bring out the big guns and root it and put a bunch of extras on it (all these one click rooting programs always come with something more than just root access). All I want to do is get root access to my phone for a few minutes so I can modify a few system files. After that, I don't need root access, and would even prefer not to have it. I tried zergRush, but it doesn't seam to work for Android 2.3.6 (it told me there were "Hellions with BLUE flames!" ).
I've searched and can't find anything out there that'll grant me root access to my phone without also installing various ROMs/programs/kernels that I don't want. I want everything to be the same on my phone when I'm done except for a system text file or two that I modify. Is there anything like zergRush that works for Android 2.3.6?
(P.S. I'm a programmer by trade so you can speak tech if you like)
EL29 isn't directly rootable. I suggest you use one of the pre-rooted ODIN One-Clicks in my signature. Everything I put out is the minimum for root and nothing additional added.
If you want root removed, use Option B of the Auto Root sticky. It will 100% remove any trace of root and you will be left with 100% stock.

agreed sfhub has the best root program for this phone. and it is just as easy to unroot when you are done. definitely go with the in click from sfhub.
I rooted my device quite a long time ago without knowing that I was running Android 4.0.4. I would like to update to 4.4, but to do that I would have to unroot. I have found many forums explaining how to unroot, but the problem is that I deleted Super User, thinking that that would unroot it. Most forums tell you to use triangle away, which requires root to operate, but because I deleted Super User, no root apps will work. I have re-downloaded Super User, but it says,
"There is no SU binary installed, and SuperSU cannot install it. This is a problem!"
So, what I am asking is, how could I reset the binary counter on my GS3 (its currently at 2) to 0 and then be able to completely unroot?
If you need any more information, I would be glad to give it to you!

It doesn't matter... I just want a newer version of Android. I haven't updated it since I got it a year ago.
I had rooted my SGS3 while on 4.0.4 using the stock Samsung rom and Odin without issue no custom ROMS were installed just root access. Early August of 2013 the OTA for 4.1.2 was rolled out and I had accepted the update which was installed without issue, which apparently should not have been the case (everything I can find says OTAs will fail if you have root access, but this was not the case). I now want to either return to a full stock to get the 4.3.3 update at which point I may remain unrooted, or gain root again and update to 4.3.3 with root. I'm cautious about how to proceed here since I've read about a lot of people bricking their phones while attempting to root after 4.3.3. My primary concern is that my flash counter is tripped at 1, but I don't have root access and am not sure how to proceed with out potentially damaging my phone. So I'm essentially getting the worst of both worlds (unable to receive stock updates from carrier, no root access to update otherwise.) and don't want to be stuck on 4.1.2 for the life of this phone. I still have SuperSU installed, but when I open it it says "There is no SuperSU Binary installed and Super SU cannot install it. This is a problem!"
I have searched these forums and a few related to it, and from what I can gather I should just reroot the phone following instructions for 4.1.2, but if I want to make the jump to 4.3.3 I wasn't clear if this would be needed or not, but none of the threads I could find directly addressed the issue for the ATT SGS3 i747. The closest I found was a thread posted last month where the OP was directed to the CF Root procedures, but there was no followup after that. I'm just a little leery about what might happen if I reroot with another method and end up with duplicate files/.apks etc related to the root process on my phone.
I also wanted to be sure that rerooting using a different method wouldn't somehow damage my phone.
Can someone with some experience please advise of the safest best practice for me to either recover root and update, or remove root and update so I can start fresh later? From what I can gather this should be an easy fix, but I would prefer to rely on the expertise of someone more knowledgable as opposed to winging it on a gut feeling I will be ok.
I am looking to just get ROOT without any changes in the stock kernel.
I don't want the weird name sounding ROM's or any of that.
Just some way to get root so I can load Titanium Backup and FREEZE the AT&T bloatware
I just go the OTA today (11/14/14) when I turned my phone on. It's the AT&T SGH-I317
and now say
Android 4.4.2
Build Number
KOT49H.I317UCUCNJ1
Device Status
Official
So is there a quick and easy way to do this?
I use a iMac BUT I can boot into Windows 7 Ultimate also (which from rooting phones before I usually always go that route).
Any help/directions would be appreciated.
Also this, who comes up with those weird names for different ROM's that NEVER really explain, in plain old English, what they do?
I can't (or don't want to) learn the syntax lingo used to find a working ROM that does just a simple thing, give you ROOT, even after reboots/yank battery/etc.
Maybe a one-click solution?
thanks :fingers-crossed:

You should try CF Autoroot
any confirmation that CF root works on 4.4.2 with NJ1 OTA update/
as soon as someone gets a root to stick
and I mean just standard, stock adding su to the mix
post the steps as to how you did it
a one click root would of course be the best......
but at least tell us how you did it, and screen shots to show would help too.
thanks

I haven't gotten root with Odin yet. No brick in and everything shows custom but US throws an error
What are the chances of flashing a note sm 910a back to 4.4.4 using the SF auto root and disabling all OTA to keep the root? Ive seen lots of threads around here and was thinking about trying it tonight. Ive herd some say that if a root was acquired it would be temp
I assume the 4.4.4 is write protected as well?
If you use CF auto root is there a way to write into that program that when it disables KNOX it can some how create a back door to get a perm root by disabling all OTA updates until they have come up with another way of doing it
It is not an OTA update that is killing root and making it revert. I'm not sure exactly what happens but my understanding from reading the posts is that certain changes to write protected system files are detected by the Kernel and then most if not all of these System changes are overwritten. Sometimes this leads to a reboot, sometimes it doesn't. Either way you lose root.
SuperSuMe by GatesJunior apparently protects against this for many system changes but not all at this time. It will also unroot on reboot still. That is your best option at this point for extended root times though as far as I understand. I've been trying to hold out for a permanent root before messing with it so I haven't dug too deep.
Hope that helps.
Thank You. Im holding out too.
