n00b I am, as I tried asking this in the wrong forum earlier today... Anyway, here goes my question again, hopefully in the right forum this time:
I've got a Sprint Galaxy S2 and I'd like to get root access to modify a few files. The thing is, I don't want to bring out the big guns and root it and put a bunch of extras on it (all these one click rooting programs always come with something more than just root access). All I want to do is get root access to my phone for a few minutes so I can modify a few system files. After that, I don't need root access, and would even prefer not to have it. I tried zergRush, but it doesn't seam to work for Android 2.3.6 (it told me there were "Hellions with BLUE flames!" ).
I've searched and can't find anything out there that'll grant me root access to my phone without also installing various ROMs/programs/kernels that I don't want. I want everything to be the same on my phone when I'm done except for a system text file or two that I modify. Is there anything like zergRush that works for Android 2.3.6?
(P.S. I'm a programmer by trade so you can speak tech if you like)
EL29 isn't directly rootable. I suggest you use one of the pre-rooted ODIN One-Clicks in my signature. Everything I put out is the minimum for root and nothing additional added.
If you want root removed, use Option B of the Auto Root sticky. It will 100% remove any trace of root and you will be left with 100% stock.

agreed sfhub has the best root program for this phone. and it is just as easy to unroot when you are done. definitely go with the in click from sfhub.

I am a newbie when it comes to this "rooting" jargon. I'm simply looking for an one click root similar to what UNREVOKED had offered earlier. Don't quite understand flash, wipe, etc. Any suggestions? I simply just want to use my wireless Teather function.
what software build are you on?
Did you try simple root that is 4 clicks

imho it's time to start reading up on how to do it . loads on info here on the board !
If you're software is 1.36 (or something like that) you can use Simple Root. If it's 1.47 (or something like that) you can use Simple Root OTA. You basically just (from phone) Menu < Settings < Applications < Development (I think, lol) < Debug
Then download and install Simple Root or Simple Root OTA and follow the steps one by one. Very, very simple. Make sure your phone is in Charge Only state when connected via USB to your computer.
If you've updated to the official Froyo ROM via Sprint/HTC which should be a software ending in .6, then there is no root method out for it yet. You must wait.
If you've used one of the non rooted ota updates you are sol for now until someone roots it, but if you where previously rooted and installed a rooted ota, then you are still rooted.
I'm sure this has been asked somewhere, and I tried to find out for myself but I haven't been able to get a definitive answer and I'm rather careful with my phone so that is why I am asking here. I have the Sprint GNote 2 with Android version 4.1.1 and I rooted using CF Auto Root. I have installed a bunch of root programs (Busy Box, Triangle Away, etc.) and made some system modifications and simple sound file changes... now my device wants me to update to a new version of Android. So before I do that, I am assuming that I just go ahead and do the update and then go through the CF Auto Root process again... is that going to affect any of the mods I have made, do I need to keep track of what I've done so I can make the changes after each system update? I'm still learning, so any help is appreciate and sorry for the n00bish question.
Thanks.

I followed the simple instructions twice on http://galaxynote2root.com/galaxy-note-2-root/how-to-root-galaxy-note-2-easiest-method/ and it worked I saw today we had a dumb update so I triangledaway installed kies so I could update, worked fine. I only root to delete all the damn junk apps and spams I dont care for custom roms just want root so I can delete apps. Well I open odin do it twice and it doesnt root is it because of this upgrade which is odd because this isn;t the first "upgrade" this device has received and the root files and method dont appear to be different.....ugh why do they make this so damn difficult its our ****ing phones let me delete what the hell I want, shouldnt have to go through all this extra ****
THis isnt working either

Just Odin this. You'll be stock/Rooted. It won't trip your flash counter. You'll also be able to get OTA updates and you won't lose Root.

Hi,
This is a great site.
I am doing this cause I deleted some photos by accident and want to use one single program that needs the phone to be rooted. Because there is no mass storage connectivity you know how it goes.
I used Odin3 to install "CF-Auto-Root-t03g-t03gxx-gtn7100.tar.md5" to my Samsung Galaxy Note 2 with Android 4.3.
Odin says "PASS!". When I try to start the SuperSU (version 2.01, was installed by Odin and CANT BE UPDATED in the play store, not even removed only opened form play store. This was the most common fix that people are giving to this situation, but it does not work for me because there is no update possibility) Because KNOX says unauthorized attempt to access not accessible areas. SuperSU does not prompt the possibility to terminate KNOX like some people are advising to do, even tough the 2.01 version of SuperSU should be able to do this. Even the RootChecker says that my phone is not rooted.
So my assumption is that the Root has not worked on my phone even tough Odin says so. So I want to try some other approach to root this phone. I just would like to know should I do some check for what Odin HAS changed in my phone and to try to change them back so I can for example try Kingos root safely.
So the questions are:
Does some one have a possible fix to my problem without me having to re root?
How can and what should I check before trying another root?
If I have to go back with stuff that Odin did, without it doing the root properly how can I do that?
And one a bit different question:
If I factory reset my phone it will install the 4.1 I thin on it, has no KNOX, will it write that on the part that is empty and might include that data of my deleted pictures or does it write it on the area that has the previous data of the Android system?
Thanks for advance if there is any advises.
Partial answer:
I followed basicly this instruction,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2538991
just needed to find the correct TWRP for my phone and used the older 1.65 SuperSU, there is something wrong with the 2.01 and it compatibility with my phone.
This video also helped cause the information was similar to the one in the link.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQAkLgXjnCo
Installed the DiskDigger and got most of the photos, so now I need to find out how to convert it from root version to version so I can upgrade my phone.
Everything is really easy with Odin. If the packet that I installed with it first that does't istall the custom recovery system would have had some other KNOX combatible version of SuperSU I think it would have worked. No I just needed to use the KNOX remover to remove it from my phone.
Thanks for the form all the answers where her and it just took me some time.
I am looking to just get ROOT without any changes in the stock kernel.
I don't want the weird name sounding ROM's or any of that.
Just some way to get root so I can load Titanium Backup and FREEZE the AT&T bloatware
I just go the OTA today (11/14/14) when I turned my phone on. It's the AT&T SGH-I317
and now say
Android 4.4.2
Build Number
KOT49H.I317UCUCNJ1
Device Status
Official
So is there a quick and easy way to do this?
I use a iMac BUT I can boot into Windows 7 Ultimate also (which from rooting phones before I usually always go that route).
Any help/directions would be appreciated.
Also this, who comes up with those weird names for different ROM's that NEVER really explain, in plain old English, what they do?
I can't (or don't want to) learn the syntax lingo used to find a working ROM that does just a simple thing, give you ROOT, even after reboots/yank battery/etc.
Maybe a one-click solution?
thanks :fingers-crossed:

You should try CF Autoroot
any confirmation that CF root works on 4.4.2 with NJ1 OTA update/
as soon as someone gets a root to stick
and I mean just standard, stock adding su to the mix
post the steps as to how you did it
a one click root would of course be the best......
but at least tell us how you did it, and screen shots to show would help too.
thanks

I haven't gotten root with Odin yet. No brick in and everything shows custom but US throws an error
