I'm having an annoying issue when I send or recieve an MMS it shows up as a slideshow in my stock MMS app. I'm using the Galaxy Note II SGH-I317M from Telus with Android 4.1.2. This issue was also in the 4.1.1 version. I've used custom roms and this only seems to be an issue in the Touchwiz releases.
Is anyone else experiencing this problem? If so, have you encountered a fix for it?
Thanks!
The only thing I can tell you is to not send text with the image and only send one picture at a time. Tell your friends not to send text with the picture and to send only one at a time. It is annoying the only other thing to do is save the images to your device.

That's something I noticed on my old Galaxy Nexus... If text was included with the image, it would show as a slideshow. With the Note II it doesn't seem to matter. Whether or not there's text included with the image, it still shows as a slideshow.

This drives me nuts! Hard to believe it's really this way and there is no fix. Well, other than using another Texting app, which i've tried and don't really want to do. I wish there was a way to fix this on the stock app.
Because of this issue I started using Go SMS Pro. It's far better in almost all aspects and doesn't show MMS as slideshows. I love the pop-up messages without exiting other apps as well.

I have been using my Galaxy Nexus on T-Mobile for almost a week now and have encountered a very strange issue that I have not be able to get to the bottom of. When sending MMS picture messages, regardless of picture size / quality, all messages appear to send just fine. However, depending on the recipient, the message either arrives just fine, no problems, or it is just a blank message! I have talked to T-Mobile support for hours today to no avail, as well as Samsung support also with no solution. I have tried changing my APN settings, adding MMSC proxy and port, and changing my device within the my.t-mobile.com settings and nothing seems to matter.
Here are my findings on what recipients receive the messages successfully and who receives a blank message:
Code:
Device Carrier Result
Galaxy Nexus AT&T Fail
HTC Desire AT&T Fail
Galaxy S II Skyrocket AT&T Fail
Galaxy Nexus Verizon Fail
LG Android T-Mobile Fail
HTC Hero Sprint Success
LG Optimus T-Mobile Success
iPhone 3GS AT&T Success
iPhone 4 AT&T Success
Is anyone else on T-Mobile USA experiencing this issue? And can anyone offer any solution?
I'm on T-Mo and I'm not aware of any issues, but I'll keep an eye on things...
It seems like I'm seeing something similar. MMS sent to T-Mobile recipients send fine consistently, but my girlfriend has AT&T and it fails intermittently. I haven't found the reason either, but interesting to see that someone else experiences this.
I've also seen this behavior with my Nexus S.

The only thing I've been able to determine is that it must be a result of T-Mobile + Galaxy Nexus. I actually didn't experience this issue with my Nexus S, and friends of mine using Galaxy Nexus + AT&T or Galaxy Nexus + Verizon do not experience this issue.
Updated original post to add confirmation that HTC Hero on Sprint successfully received MMS picture message
Are you running the stock MMS app? do you have one from the market, or a tweaked one from a ROM? maybe it is sending picture in an incompatible format....

Sorry, should have mentioned this in the original post:
Running stock ICS (4.0.2) no root with a locked bootloader
Using the stock messaging app and have not downloaded any replacement messaging apps. I had the same setup on my Nexus S before my GN and did not experience this issue.
I haven't noticed any issues yet, but I think i've only sent MMS messages to an iPhone 4 user and a Blackberry user on AT&T.
Just to add another couple data points...
I'm T-Mobile with my GNex at version 4.0.2.
When I send a picture to my wife's Galaxy S 4G (also on T-Mo), she seems to receive it fine.
When I send a picture to my mother's original Droid on verizon, she gets a tiny, thumbnail sized picture that only gets displayed for a split second before it disappears.
I have no issues receiving MMS pics from either phone.

Very interesting... I will check if my failed recipients are seeing a tiny thumbnail before it shows up blank as well
Thanks for the reply
Im using Apex rom and when I try and send a captured camera picture to a verizon customer I get and error. Something like service not activated on network. I think the picture size is too large for t-mobile MMS, as I can send a FFC picture just not a rear camera one. Any ideas on how to auto crop rear pictures, or how to fix this. OK just figured it out, if I lower the resolution when taking the picture it works, just would be better if the MMS program did it for me.
Hey all, I have had my Gnex for about two months now and I have noticed a recurring issue. When someone tries to send me a contact card through MMS, the phone will download the message, but won't show anything after, nothing to long press to save. I came from a Samsung Captivate and the Samsung messaging app would allow the sending and receiving of vcf files through mms. Anyway to do this with the Gnex? Thanks!
Look and make sure your messaging app isn't saving them in a funky place, if you still can't find it, try sending it through email.

It seems weird there's not more people complaining about that, is it really not possible to send/receive vCards over mms with Galaxy Nexus (I have Jelly Bean 4.1.1)? There's no option to send contact information over mms and when I receive one, I just get a blank attachment that I can't click Screenshot: www DOT shrani DOT si/f/24/c3/4t9GXHsZ/vcard.jpg (replace DOT with an actual dot). Also for some reason, at message options I don't have the usual 'Save attachment' option.
bump :/
I hate bumping, but I really can't find anything about this problem, even after searching for hours. Anyone has any tips?
Is there really no solution for this?

I ran into this problem myself and duplicated it on all of the Galaxy Nexus phones . I think there is something native messaging app that cannot read vcards. I installed handcent sms and it works perfectly.
My wife has an Unlocked Galaxy Nexus with JB on T-Mobile's Monthly 4G service. For some reason, whenever she sends out a MMS message, the attached image either A: Doesn't arrive (which happens to me on my Skyrocket with CM9) or B: Takes DAYS to arrive (which happens to other people who use Android phones like the original Incredible and some Samsung phone that has a keyboard.) Like a good boy I searched here to see if other people had this issue, and it looks like there may be a JB issue with MMS stuff, but I couldn't find anyone that had the same scenario as she has. She has no problem receiving MMS messages, just sending them out. On my phone it shows that I received an MMS message, but it doesn't show any picture. On her end it looks like everything sent out fine. Anyone have any ideas as to what this may be? I'd prefer an option that doesn't require rooting the phone as she is not a power user and won't have any use for the benefits of rooting, but if it has to be done then so be it (maybe I could just unroot it after it is fixed.) Could this be an APN issue?
Not sure if this helps but I'd been using go sms pro ever since I first got my gnex and it delivers all pic messages perfectly, I just had to fill in the user agent. I know that t-mobiles network is picky about what size picture it lets your phone fetch maybe the downsizing of pictures slows down the whole sending of them?
I had a similar problem which I fixed by restoring the APN to default...
Why is it that on jellybean in the messaging app that it won't load a picture someone sends me? I have 4g and lte on but the signal this is full bars but its grayed out sometimes then goes blue.. I don't know what that's about but please reply soon.
Go into settings in mms and make sure auto retrieve is checked.
i have the same issue sometimes when iphone users message me, its very hit and miss, some come in just fine, some come as slideshows, and some dont ever download at all. I havent been able to figure out what make them do that

This is why I use a third-party sms app (I use Handcent). From what I've been able to figure out, if an iPhone user sends you just a picture, it usually downloads fine. But if they insert text with the picture (in the same MMS), then you run into problems with the picture having a hard time downloading or (worse, IMO) showing up as a slideshow. The slideshow also tends to happen if they send you multiple pictures in the same MMS. With a third-party sms app, this can still happen, but it doesn't seem to happen as often.
To me, this is one of the weird idiosyncrasies of Android, and one that I wish they'd find a way to fix.
Ive searched hundreds of posts but all the answers are the same. If you are annoyed by getting multi picture or pictures with words from iPhone users coming through as a slideshow or video, the simply install Handcent SMS and the problem magically goes away. We'll I've had Handcent for years and I still have the same problem. I've got it installed and it's set as the default as far as I can tell, I still get slideshows from my iPhone friends when the send multi picture mms messages. Can someone please tell me exactly how to make Handcent show these as single pictures where I can zoom in?
Affects me as well

This is also a problem for me. It's affected all of my Android devices.
It seems that when I receive an MMS from any other user (not just iPhone users) it will be displayed as a slide show instead of an image if the message was sent along with text. This happens even if the attachment is only one image.
It is also triggered if the sender's message has two or more images (even if no text).
I can't begin to describe how annoying this is. From internet searches this has been an issue since at least 2010.
