Fix for poor A2DP quality on 4.2.2 - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Just wanted to share this here. There is clear audible decrease in audio quality on 4.2.2 when listening over bluetooth (A2DP). All the higher tones were somehow garbled, like cymbals, or high vocals, etc. I could clearly notice the poor quality on 4.2.2 on my car stereo and also the improvement after installing the fix on my stock rooted GN 4.2.2 (GSM). I haven't tested this on custom ROMs.
Steps:
Root your phone, if not rooted
Make Nandroid backup (in worst case, you might not be able to boot)
Download bluetooth.default.so http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=39632#c158 Also attached to this message.
Download audio.a2dp.default.so http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=39632#c163 Also attached to this message.
In /system/lib/hw, rename bluetooth.default.so to bluetooth.default.so.bak (or whatever)
In /system/lib/hw, rename audio.a2dp.default.so to audio.a2dp.default.so.bak (or whatever)
Copy files to /system/lib/hw
Set permission on both files to be same as with the original files (644)
Restart phone

Edit: deleted

From CM Team I got reply once for my question about Bluetooth A2DP audio streaming. They said the CM Bluetooth files are not compatible with stock android ROM. So I didn't dare to test the A2DP file but I just downloaded latest night and I took that Bluetooth audio .so file and worked.

I asked information about the bluetooth files for A2DP streaming fix..
CM's Bluetooth quality (I mean A2DP streaming quality) is much better than on stock ROM.
I noticed the difference when I tested CM10.1 first Nightly of JB 4.2.2..

Does this help with call quality over standard Bluetooth

ok i'm sorry, but just to be clear, doing this on CM10.1 won't do a think correct?

I have been looking for something like this!!! Thank you! What exactly does it do? Does it increase the bitpool of the stream?
FYI, I just noticed that it changed my bluetooth device name to "Nexus 4" which can easily be changed back in the bluetooth settings...

Very, very good fix. thanks

Interested in this answer as well. Can anyone clarify please?

Is it possible/likely that in addition to fixing issues with quality, this will also resolve the high-speed playback problem? A few other people and myself have experienced BT audio streaming where it plays back way too fast in the car. So far there doesn't seem to be a qualified fix for it. I'm interested to try this and see what happens - just wanting to see if anyone knew for certain ahead of time.

Probably only works on stock. CM should have same/similar fix on some later build, check the Google bug thread at http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=39632.

Thanks so much for posting this OP!!! I have been lamenting my purchase of the N4 until this fix. The phone is now perfect! Well aside from no voice search for music like Siri (Google Voice search never pulls up my music).

I finally fixed my Bluetooth in call audio.I switched back to 4.1. This really sucks as I got used to 4.2.2 pull down toggles. I really hope Google gets this straightened out. This fix does help the Bluetooth audio streaming but my work truck and headset are not A2DP and when in call the volume seems to fade in and out. My Subaru has A2DP and made music easy to listen too but in call still seemed bad.

Any chance this fix works on non-Nexus hardware? Since moving to a JB phone from one running ICS I have lost two very useful facilities - Llama being able to pick up cell changes without the screen being on and good quality BT audio.

Not sure if this will help anyone else but found doing factory reset fixed most of my 4.2.2 Bluetooth issues. Ota gave me issues. When 4.2.2 Google factory image was released I fastboot flashed it did a factory reset immediately and all seems to work fine but id tags for songs.

Yes, most of the latest ROMs and Kernels already have implemented Google's fix for it-- just load up any of those.
Alternatively, you can disable Stagefright manually-- see this thread for details:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=745320
It's not the same as the Google fix, but it works...
I have bakedsnack and kingx installed and pandora sounds like crap. I'll look into disabling stagefright, thanks for the link.
*sigh*
Kernels aren't going to do jack. It's the ROM which has the problem. The only ROM I've seen that actually has the Stagefright patch is CyanogenMod (RC2, Nightly, and Final). Really. Go try it.

I tried cyanogen for 2 days and hated it with a passion.
I'm running EViOs v1.1 froyo rooted and noticed Pandora was sounding like crap. I went into settings and saw there was a new setting for audio quality, it was defaulted to "Normal", so I changed it to "High" and all was good for me.

Sorry but thats not a new setting and it has nothing to do with the quality issue that started after the froyo update...its stagefright that came with froyo...
I have tried the fix for non-rooted users and it did not work for me unfortunatly... Is cyano's the only rom with a fix?
The leaked 3.28 spint update definitely fixes the problem. Disabling stagefright *WILL* fix the audio, however your camcorder will also be broke.
or do what I did, go back to 2.1

Speaker volume is very low in Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean

Hello Guys,
Can you guys please go to the following link and star that problem, to see if Google can do something about correcting this issue.
this low volume is the biggest complaint about staying stock.
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=35084
Why not just use Franco kernel and use volume boost... I just hate filing complaints.
-tapped from my paradigm Franco kernel Galaxy nexus
I have the same problem with a nexus galaxy with jellybean 4.1.1
I found a soluction in web that talk of change a string in system\build.prop
"ro.config.vc_call_vol_steps=" and change its value to 10.
But my problem is that in my build.prop the string there isn't.
How i can solve the low volume on my nexus?
Volume+ (volume boost) don't work, it crash at start
Bump!
If any of you guys have time, please Star that topic.
I know it can easily be fixed via rooting the device or what not.
But i'm kind of over the whole rooting scene in a way and just want to stay stock.
but it bugs me that if my nexus is in my pocket or if im not in a quiet room i can barely hear anything.
i also emailed the google play support team, hopefully they will reply.
i've owned way too many google devices for them to just ignore us like that.
best believe if this issue is not resolved via software update, sad to say but i will be switching over to ios.
reply back from Google Play.
I guess they cant do anything about it.. This sucks.
Hi JC,
Thanks for your response back. I can understand how annoying it can be to
experience low volume on your phone device and having to wait for the
development team to come out with an OTA to fix the issue. Unfortunately,
this information isn't available to us since it's being handled by the
Android development team. I recommend you report the issue directly to the
development team. Here's how you can report platform bugs:
http://developer.android.com/support.html
There is also a chance that the issue might be something Samsung might be
able to either repair or perform a replacement for; depending on how long
you've had your device. If you'd like, you're welcome to give us a call
and we can see if this will help. I'm providing a link to our click to
call below:
http://support.google.com/googleplay/bin/request.py?contact_type=contact_policy&policy=hardware
If you have any other questions or concerns, please reply back to this
email and I'll be happy to help further.

Jay

If you are just referring to Music / Video audio volume you might want to check out this app.. I haven't tried it.. I'm running CM10 which sounds great...
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.omegacentauri.SpeakerBoost&hl=en
I can understand the stock mentality but with a couple adjustments you will get a better than stock - stock experience...
Personally If I wanted to stock-ish, I would flash the stock rom, root, install trinitystable35 kernel, install trickster mod, adjust headphone volume only and then set superuser to deny any root attempt by default without a prompt...

If you wanted to add that to your build.prop, you could download Build Prop Editor from the Playstore, create a key named ro.config.vc_call_vol_steps, and give it the value 10. At your own risk, of course.
Do they even test this stuff? It's beyond unacceptable to have a speaker this inaudible. Makes me want to throw my phone every time I try to watch a video.
I added my two cents to the link.

I also has got version 4.2.1 and I stock ROM is just fine for me, I never liked CM, but I have got root. A have got problem with volume too, do not hear SMS in my pocket at all.
I did not find the solution, Volume+ boost app still do not work with JB (hopefully will work soon) and Speaker Boost still "stop working", even the old versions.
So, do you know any other solution?
JB 4.1.1 Low volume issue resolved - at lease for me
i had the same issue when i upgraded my stock S3 to 4.1 -- the speaker volume was very low in Nav and music players.
Increasing the "Media" volume fixed it for me.
click on the volume button (up or down) and then click on the settings icon at the end of the slider. Now slide the "Media" volume to the highest.
Everything is back to normal -- in nav audio and speaker phone etc.
If you have not already tried this, you can give it a try ... it might fix it!

I too use gapps 20130301 from goo and have the sphere option. But when aligning the fist image, the "gallery" closes. I had it working on another ROM, but quality of sphere is really bad when shooting in a room (alignment), so I don't miss it. Maybe/hopefully Google improves it in the next version.
EDIT: Indeed the camera gives me more problems than just a buggy sphere... NO images are taken at all! Not even with a 3rd party camera app!
I think this is a major issue. I read that it should be fixed in Android 4.2.2 but apperently this is not the case. Interestingly I had it working in other 4.2.2 ROMs so maybe there is an issue with this LiquidSmooth release...
Anyone else has troubles with the camera?

Bit the bullet and went for the update and tried Bluetooth handsfree. Still not working.:crying:
Connects fine, transfers contacts fine but audio during calls (at any volume level) is distorted and robotic (both ways). Even when connected there is intermittent bursts of quiet and distorted audio through the handset speaker which sounds like the connection is trying to drop out. HTC one, Sony Xperia, HTC Cha Cha, HTC Desire all work perfectly on the same car kit.
Tried all devices on a Saab (2008) Ford (2012) and Renault (2011) all the same. Other devices connect and audio is perfect, S3 distorted.
Anyone recommend a Kernel that they have confirmed BT functionality on in car systems?

Thanks for telling! I always do a full wipe when flashing ROMs but then I realised that other ROMs also had the same problem "suddenly". So I tried it once more with reverting to stock, re-rooting,... and now also deleted my backup of "Android" folder that I otherwise always restore to keep some settings. What should I say? It works again! Smooth and flawless (including sphere)! :victory:

Afaik Google implemented its own Bluetooth stack, which obviously is not that great...
"Android 4.2 introduces a new Bluetooth stack optimized for use with Android devices. The new Bluetooth stack developed in collaboration between Google and Broadcom replaces the stack based on BlueZ and provides improved compatibility and reliability."
http://developer.android.com/about/versions/jelly-bean.html
I'm afraid you will have to wait for Android 5 or other fixes... (can be wrong though. I'm not so firm with this matter)
I noticed many people here having BT issues. Not sure if this helps for calling but definitely helps for audio. Check it out.

thanks!
Different people had so many choice
All 4.2 use same kernel, IMHO similar battery life.
I toggle 3g, wifi and mobile internet only when I need, and 2 days like 60% with stock battery, when I use too much mostly a day or 2 the 100%.
You should backup and try all of them

I never had dropped calls, duplicate texts etc. which are some of the issues i'm having in stock ICS. Battery was great once I installed JuiceDefender Ultimate .. I haven't switched up to Rootbox 4.2.2 because I couldn't get GPS to lock.

What about wifi tethering? Bluetooth audio does not work at all?
Sent from my MK16i using xda app-developers app
I have been using Rootbox since late January. I mostly like it, but I keep having multiple texts and sometimes I get a "not receiving texts" issue until I totally wipe the phones caches, data and rom and reflash. Getting kind of annoying because it's about every 2-3 weeks or so I gotta reflash or clear to a total wipe to fix an issue. Probably related more to the kernel than the rom? I dunno. I am thinking about trying CM 10.1 or DMan's daily driver which I think is based off of 4.0.4? 4.2 is nice, but I need a phone that's a touch more stable and so does my gf. Her phone has the same issues as mine at varying intervals. Rootbox is really nice, it's the only modified ROM I have experience with on these phones. Shame the dev community is dwindled but they did excellent work thus far. If I could I would take over...but I am no programmer. I think I may end up back with stock GB eventually though I'd rather not. I like having my Nexus 7 and phones all on the same 4.2.2.

Bluetooth won't work for headset hands free .. it may work for music (link w/ car radio to play music).
wifi tethering works flawlessly.
torch doesn't work from toggles but installing flashlight app from store easily resolves.

I am loving the AOKP 4.2.2 ROM. It has been working excellent for me. There have been very few glitches I have come across. Battery life is great and all functions seem to work. I haven't tried bluetooth since I don't ever use it.

Well played, my friend. Well played. Yeah I should spend more time in the Captivate Glide Android Development forum instead of here. That's kinda how I missed that little nugget of knowledge.

Thanks. When I get this phone, I would like a rom that mimics Jelly Bean, since I have an Epic 4G finally on Cyanogenmod 10 and I'm already used to that. Looks like I'll have to try a few roms (I don't think Cyanogenmod will ever come to the Captivate Glide ), but I'll keep the one you mentioned in mind.
I finally installed AOKP. The only thing I found misbehaving is bluetooth car handsfree.
has anyone tried with this rom ?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2109774&highlight=best+rom
is so what can you say about it ?
where can I download a stock ICS rom for the captivate glide in case I want to go back ?

Can you explain 'bluetooth car handsfree'?
I get bluetooth / headset. And I believe I get 'handsfree' - click the button on the headset and it answers the call, and click the button on the headset, speak who you want to call (voice dial), and it dials.
In this case, your car is your headset? (Speakerphone, happens to be mounted in the car?)
Any chance (hoping), that it works with a bluetooth headset, in which case it could be a device compatibility problem?
Or is it just handsfree bluetooth (period) is unhappy?

I have an uconnect powered car. I can link the glide to my car but I don't hear anything during calls. Is there a rom that have this working properly?
Jb Rom
There's a dev Spyke555 who is developing a cm 10.1 jb rom for this phone.

Known ROMs with working phone mic?

Are there any known 4.3 or 4.4 ROMs with working phone mic?
I've used CM 10.2 Stable (4.3) and Carbon Rom (4.4.2). Both work great, the only issue is that the headset is not usable for calls (low mic output). My solution for now is using the earbud/mic, but I'm curious to know if anyone has made progress on this. Aside from this, the various ROMs are near perfect for my needs.
I'm not very knowledgeable on the details of writing ROMs, but would any type of source code release from LG help developers solve this? Curious to know what the main hurdles are for the devs and what tools they need.
Thanks.
Wish I could tell ya but I don't have a headset with a mic. I'd say give AICP a try since it uses AOKP sources instead of CM. Might give ya a better outcome.

Still no luck on a solid working phone microphone (low volume on other end). And the search continues.
Now that mid March has come around, has anyone had any good luck with a working in call microphone?
I was previously using several 4.4.2 Builds however, the need for a working phone mic was too critical for daily usage.
I'm using a 4.3 build (Slim Bean) which I believe is the only one with a working phone. The build is an unofficial beta and the only real issues are lack of microSD function, FC on Google Drive, and a few freezes here and there. Overall it's usable for my needs but would like to get back onto 4.4.2 granted the phone mic works.
Any suggestions/advice would be great. Thanks!

I don't know much, plus i am still on stock but i will suggest you to ask your query and issues on particular custom ROM posts. i have seen people getting response faster and if in case there is a bug, high chances that developer of that particular ROM can fix it

Thanks. I ask because this is a problem has existed on all known roms since 4.3.1 for the E980 on ATT. Never been able to get a straight answer anywhere so I figure I would generically post it. I have reached out to some devs but not luck.

Here is a manual fix for the in call mic from JustinNL on XDA:
Step 1:
download a "build.prop editor app", I used: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrummy.apps.build.prop.editor
Step 2:
Modify these 2 specs in the build prop editor
persist.audio.handset.mic.type=digital --> replace digital with analog
persist.audio.dualmic.config=endfire -- replace endfire with false
Since i changed it i haven't had any complaints so far but flashing to new nightly makes it revert again, keep that in mind."
Been working great for myself and others.
