[Q] Help: Stable Jelly Bean update needed - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I haven't been on this site in quite some time ... since owning an Epic some years ago. I've been happy with my Epic Touch ... until the latest OTA FL24 update.
Needless to say, the phone is unreliable now, especially when using GPS. 4g just switches on and off while using Navigate.
I'm looking for a stable jelly bean ROM or near factory jelly bean leak. (emphasis on stable)
Any recommendations?
Note: I don't have it rooted, but will if I must.

This Rom is pure AOSP and gives the best stock JB experience

Flash a safe recovery when flashing from ICS or GB...(WARNING:YOUR PHONE WIILL NOT BOOT The CWM recovery is ONLY for flashing ROMs andMUST ONLY BE USED TO FLASH ROMS COMMING FROM ICS OR GB)
installation instructions for any ROM
First backup your user apps with Titanium backup and then flash the EL29 Directboot kernel
Through mobile Odin*
Mobile Odin
EL29 Directboot kernel
Titanium Backup
--------------------------------------
In Recovery......
1- Make an nandroid backup (it will save your life) (in backup and restore)
2- Wipe data/Factory Reset (hit yes)
3- Format System (hit yes) (in mounts and storage)
4- Wipe davik cache (hit yes) (in advanced)
5- Go to install from SD card
6- select choose from internal or external SD card (where ever you put them)
7- Find what folder you put the files in
8- Select the Rom(say yes when prompted)
9- Repeat steps 6 though 8 with the gapps
10- Go back
11- Say a prayer
12- Hit reboot
13-
If there's anything your confused or need help on...ask me
*And after that you will have a custom recovery with the ROM you installed, that recovery is safe to Flash/Wipe from. All CM kernels are safe to do so
So you don't have to flash the kernel every time
After that just restore your user apps though Titanium backup (If you did anyway)

Wow! Thanks for the detailed response. I certainly needed it since I haven't flashed a ROM in years.
I'll give it a whirl this weekend. (fingers crossed)

Gamepro, I and everyone else here in the E4GT section know that you are trying to help and we greatly appreciate it, but you need to stop pushing that one ROM onto people. When a user asks for a good factory ROM we don't push AOSP/AOKP and say that it is stock. It is not stock for this device. It is stock for the Nexus line and ported to other devices. A factory JB ROM is something like GB08 as it is leaked directly from Samsung/Sprint specifically for this device and will eventually turn into an OTA release. Also, you are promoting favoritism to a Specific ROM. Lately, 75% of your posts have been pushing that specific ROM to people with instructions to install without letting the user decide what is best for them. This tactic is looked down on here and I am surprised no one has said anything to you. I have even seen you tell people to use it when they specifically asked for a TW based JB ROM or for a TW based ICS ROM. We get that it is your favorite ROM. Not saying it is bad or anything. But you really should let the user decide. It is ok to post a link to the ROM page, but that is about all you should post. Evervolv may not be the best ROM for some users. So with all that said, please try not pushing a single ROM on to people. Do some research and check out other ROM's to possibly offer up something that will be good for what people are asking specifically for.
To the OP, we have a huge amount of ROMs here. Try them and see what suits you.

I agree with graydiggy. The ROM favoritism needs to stop. We have many talented delelopers working on both Touchwiz based ROMs and AOSP based ROMs.

ROM roulette sounds like the best option here. Flash all the ROMs and see where you land

[Q] help with updating

I have been searching for days now and I keep getting thigns confused with the other epic 4g touch (stupid effing retards, who decided on that naming) and its driving me crazy
I have the old epic 4g with the slide out keyboard
I have 2.2 ec05 I think, its midnightrom 5.5 ext4
I want to update to stock 2.3 as I think its available (or is that the other epic 4g again?) and then go about picking a new rom to use
I cant remember if I have to convert back to rfs before using odin, or can I just get a 2.3 stock ext4 rom with cwm or bonsai whatever is used now
I have been away from the forums for a few months and I am way behind - like I said I spent like 2-3 days so far searching and reading all sorts of crap that wasnt helpful or got me confused so I am coming here for help
what do I do first?
Sounds like you should be able to flash the new CWM 5.0.2.7 which can be found in the Roll up sticky in the top of Development and then flash an EL30 or FC09 ROM. You will also have to look into whether you want to switch to MTD (non samsung partition gives you more app space) or stick to BML. You may want to try Sleeper which detects your file system and keeps it. CleanGB and The People's ROM are good choices too. Or you may want to brave new frontiers altogether and choose an AOSP ROM based on ICS like CM9 or AOKP. You might want to take it slow and just update to a Touchwiz ROM for now. The People's ROM is very Bonsai-ish.

And of course backup 2 ways before flashing anything. Use Titanium Backup and make a nandroid backup.

first is odin still used, I dont see much mentioning it anymore other then for CWM - some roms were odin files that did everything for you all at once
I think I have CWM on there also but at the time I needed bonsai (I think thats the name) to flash the midnightrom 5.5 so I installed that, if I can have both at the same time then I have both, if not then can I just install CWM5 the normal way or do I have to go back to stock first
probably going to do the CM9 rom I am using midnightrom and it was one of the best when it was new but the developer has sick kids and cant really keep up which makes sense so I want a new one and I dont want unstable roms - so most of what I have read has said that CM9 is really good and its ICS so thats cool I am still on 2.2 now
I dont need to backup anything other then sms which I have already so thats no problem all the apps I will just reinstall anyways and google backups my contacts
I really dont care if I start from scratch and I would prefer to wipe everything and start over because in the past with roms on other phones and this one updating wasnt as good as a new install so I will probably go that route
not sure about the MTD/BML I will have to look into that but I am running ext4 now journaling on so I assume I have to change the format back to rfs before messing with that
No one is making odin ROM tars anymore because there is a general dislike of Odin. You can flash the CWM 5.027, then 3 finger into, wipe data, cache and dalvik the flash CM9 and the immediately flash the gapps which is the google apps for things like the market (Play store now), Gmail and other stuff. Odin whichever modem you like at anytime.

yea I dont like odin either
but will I have to use odin for the model update or do the roms do that now also, I am on EC05 now
Well there are some flashable deltas that can get you from EC05 to EI22, then from there to EL30, then another to get you to FC09. Some have had unreliable results on the last one. It is easier to just Odin the one you want.

well since I have ext4 not rfs I would have to convert back to rfs, I think that cwm and/or bonsai will do this for me - then I could use the samsung software to "restore" my phone to stock and do a ota update to get the latest modem? - I think that the samsung software is odin in a different skin but whatever
again like I said sorry I have been out of the roms for about 1 year and things move so fast with this sorta stuff that I am like starting from scratch again

No. It doesn't matter because CM9 will convert you to MTD with yaffs2 file system. You are clearing all data anyway. Just flash cwm5, wipe everything and flash.

ICS safe?

Are the ics roms safe to flash? The 1st time I flashed a ics rom,i had probs. No recovery, glitchy and jus plain janky. Im sure they have come along way. Can som1 recommend a safe stable ics rom that also has rogue recovery or acs?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
If you want to go back to gingerbread use el29 restore get recovery then flash CyanogenMod 9 it is better than most roms based off leaks.
Here is the latest stock ICS.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1694695
Give the devs a little time and you can flash a kernel with the recovery you want.

They are safe to flash if you follow OP directions. Always flash from el26 cwm recovery and you're good. If you cant live without recovery, flash a touchwiz rom and use agat63s repack recovery.
SFhub just released an updated FF02+CWM repack built on GB code to avoid the eMMC lockup bug. However, you need to check the ROM and see if update-binary is corrected or not.
Please look for his post on this here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1694695&page=7
The other safe solution is the one that has been known - go back to EL26 and flash away from there. (GB doesn't have the offending code that causes the bug to be triggered.)
I've been using Calkulin's E4GT 2 v1.6 ICS rom since version 1.6 came out (FE22) and I haven't had a single crash or FC, and I've been getting good battery life.. I never even get close to dying and thats even with a couple hours of screen on time (games, facebook, lots of texting, ~1hour talk time).
I'd say go for it =) Just make sure you follow all instructions carefully! This ROM was very easy to flash.. I had been using Calkulin's GB rom (el29) and all I had to do was wipe my caches and flash his .zip file in CWM.. bam, ICS ^_^
When you say safe what is it you really mean... cuz its all SAFE if you know what you are doing..
Well nothing is ever 100% safe. There is always a small chance you could screw things up somehow (the eg31 deal back when the phone was first released, the emmc bug, etc). There are always possible unknown side effects that don't become obvious until down the line.
That said, if you are careful, the odds of doing something irreversible are extremely small on a phone that has been out for a few months or more.

[Q] Differences between clockworkmod recovery amd CWM-Based recovery?

Hi all, ive had my Tmobile samsung galaxy s2 for awhile now, and i finally decided to root it (and did it successfully) a few days ago (yay)
Ive done a bit of research for what I can do while rooted, basically after CPU setting, save battery life when idle... Simple things
But ive been meaning to try flashing a ROM. But I want to make sure i know absolutely everything needed to know to flash one. I had a samsung tmobile sidekick that I was able to root and flash Gingerclone on, but I remember it had alot of little details while installing that simply missing one could seriously screw up your phone
So first off, if anyone has had the sidekick: Is flashing/ installing roms as complex on the sgh-t989 as it is on sidekick 4g?
And secondly... After rooting my galaxy, i no longer have the stock android recovery (obviously)...... Instead it is replaced with CWM-based recovery (i think 5.0.2.2?). Is there a difference between this and Clockworkmod recovert (which should show an orange screen)?
I wanted to use ROM manager but opted not to when it told me that I "needed clockworkmod recovery installed" to work.
A little help, please?
Thanks!

Okay, great! Glad it was so simple lol.
Now about my other question... Let me explain. When I would install a custom ROM on my sidekick, i remember having to do all sorts of things like unmount system/ unmount SD card before installing and remount them after (i dont remember the exact methods... Dont quote me on that).
I know the general procedure of basically Wiping data, Wiping cache, Wiping delvik cache... But does the galaxy s2 require checking of all of that unmounting/mounting?

Flashed many roms, and no need for all that. Just make sure you wait the 10 minutes after flashing a rom.
FlaShing roms on this phone is so simple "that even a caveman can do it". I would also advise to ditch clockwork recovery and install twrp, also never use rom manager to flash roms. Just follow the op's instructions on what steps to follow to flash the rom successfully. Also no need to mount and unmount anything. Good luck.
Awesome! Thank you all for your replies, glad to here that flashing is much simpler on this phone
I really wouldnt recommend anyone rooting a sidekick as a beginner. It was my phone, i soft bricked ot my first time. Ugh, it was such a hassle! And it left me a little traumatized to try anything on this. lol!
Thanks for all the help!
Here are the genreric steps to follow to flash a rom (and yes, TWRP is recommended instead of CWM):
- place the rom zip on the internal storage
- place a copy of the radio zip that you have on the internat storage (for safety reasons)
- copy Google Apps zip if it is not included in the rom (most roms do not have these included, but the dev might provide a tuned version)
- reboot phone and enter the recovery menu (hold vol up + vol down pressed while booting)
# In recovery mode
- wipe data
- wipe system
-(Use Darkside Super wipe if still on cwm 5.0.2.7 or below)
- flash rom
- flash gapps (if missing from the rom)
- wipe cache/ dalvik cache.
- reboot and wait 10 mins
- reboot and wait 1 minute
- enjoy
If you are planning on flashing a Rom on your phone of course twrp recommended and you should definitely try Jedi mind trick x2 for the t989 Hercules. It is the most stable Rom on the Samsung galaxy s2 T989 T-Mobile. The instructions above are the best instructions you should follow. And read it carefully or you will brick your device. If using twrp follow the twrp method. And if using cwm make sure you use the extra cwm steps. It is super important you follow them unless you want a fancy paper weight.

A few questions about flashing stock ROM to activate on Sprint

First, Merry Christmas!
So here is my situation. I planned to give my sister my old Samsung Epic for Christmas. I put CM10 on it, threw in a new battery and watched her unwrap it. She was happy. Unfortunately, I discovered that you cannot activate a CM10 modded phone on Sprint, so I need to flash a stock ROM. I have never done this before, and it's been a while since I messed with Android and since she leaves the state in a few days, I need to do this quickly. I hope you can bear with my possibly silly questions so I can get this done ASAP!
1) I have seen the ROM listed here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12755712 recommended. I plan to use this. Any issues?
2) I understand this will revert the file system back to RFS. Will I be able to restore my CM10 nandroid, or will I need to re-run the CM10 flash from scratch in order to reformat?
3) Are any of my assumptions incorrect?
Normally I would research the hell out of this rather than ask for help, but under the circumstances, I am in a bit of bind time-wise.
Thanks!
1. EC05 too old. Get FC09 tar here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1592994
2. Yes, you have to flash CM10 to convert to MTD in order to restore nandroids of the format. Don't forget to wipe /system if you ever wanna flash a CM10 package, or you'll have to pull the battery...
3. IDK, I'm in China and have no knowledge of carriers
Sent from HTC Incredible S @ Sense 4.1
Just flash a stock based mtd ROM like the peoples ROM mtd. Activate and then flash back or restore back to cyanogen. I've heard that some people have issues flashing back to another ROM from cm10 because of the partition resizing. But I've jumped back to cm9 which should have been an issue, but was not. Give it a try after a backup. Worst case you have to Odin back to stock like originally planned.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
As suggested you can just flash a Touchwiz MTD ROM like The People's ROM. Activate then restore your CM10 nandroid or wipe data in CWM and flash back to CM10 after.
XDA Moderator
Or just stay on TPR and enjoy the succulent battery life
I've done the multi boot method where you boot off the sd card. It works great and is a lot faster than I thought it would be. You keep your cm10 system exactly as it is. You also can leave the OS files on your sd card and install the zip from recovery any time you need to update the prl or adjust radio settings.

[Q] On stock OTA 4.1.2- Flash EL26 kernel still?

My girlfriend is finally fed up with the garbage stock Sprint JB ROM that is a poor excuse for an update...So she's on stock 4.1.2 GB27. I'm going to one click root it, then either one click or with mobile odin flash the Gingerbread kernel EL26 with CWM...which shouldn't be used with the rom but just to get into CWM to flash a new JB rom? Does that sound right? I see people saying to run something to clear the data partition and all that, but why can't you just wipe data in CWM? I've done similar stuff with the i777 GS2 but its been 7 months probably since I rooted and did all the other stuff.
tl;dr from official sprint OTA 4.1.2 gb27 Jelly Bean:
1. one click root
2. flash gingerbread EL26 kernel with cwm
3.wipe data
4. flash rom (with packed-in kernel I assume) of choice through CWM
5. profit
does this sound right?

Those are the correct steps.
The reason we recommened the JB wipe all 2x is because it deletes the preload folder as well.
Some ROM updater-scripts don't delete everything. My ROM updater-scripts wipe everything but data. But it is still recommened to flash the wipe all script before flashing a custom ROM.

Ok cool thanks. I wanted to have someone confirm that I was doing it right and that flashing the GB kernel for cwm was right on jelly bean... Its one thing if I brick my phone, another thing if I brick my girlfriend's. But I know what I'm doing, haha.
Does that wipe script wipe internal storage like music and photos? I thought I read a thread saying to wipe everything if not on JB, but I am.

No it doesn't delete your internal drive. And since you are on Jb already, your partitioning should be good to go. No need to wipe internal, just jb format x2. Good luck.
