My wife and I are considering taking our tmobile phones over to AT&T. There both unlocked... Note 2 & sg3. Question I have is would I have to flash AT&T modems and roms to be able to fully utilize the new network? Just don't want to end up with bricks. AT&T already told me both devices unlocked will work fine on the network.
Check att forum. Many people done it successfully.

Same as tmobile and their BS lies. I'll go into AT&T tomorrow and have them test a sim before I make a decision.
So nobody has gotten LTE to work at all? What about hspa+?
HSPA works out of the box (assuming AT&T HPSA is available in your area). Lte is a no go.

Wait till you get the bill. My note 2 sucks data like a monster compared to my n4 and sensation. Comparable bill is 30 bucks more a month on att.
I always wondered if just turning the lte on in menu worked though.

now that my phones are paid off if i switch to at&t with my employee discount it's about the same for me. the only thing i like is i get more bars and the data speeds are more consistent. the biggest issue for us was dead spots in our area and roaming on at&t anyways. i tested the same spots with my at&t sim and i had good service. it's a tough decision because ill have to pay the tmobile EFT'S.
i already tried to use the different options for LTE and cannot use it yet, the t-889 radio LTE is still locked until we get a OTA.

I get that too but no LTE until tmobile give us an updated radio. Made the switch to AT&T yesterday. Bought my wife a one x and her LTE speed is crazy fast. I cannot wait to use it. Of course by the time tmobile releases the new firmware ill probably be on the s4.

I had LTE on Verizon. I got 24M speeds. I get 18M on HSPA+. For what I do... Play music, get email, text, use social apps it means little. All of my downloads are at home on WiFi.
On Verizon LTE had awful battery drain. I kept it turned off a lot. Hopefully TMO and ATT will not have that issue.

has this adversely affected your experience with the phone, or were you just expecting more?
I don't even pay attention to down/up speeds anymore... they only serve to make you envious of other people with higher data transfer rates for no reason. if the phone is working well and web functions are performed at an acceptable speed for you, who cares?
have fun with those ATT overages @ 2GB data.

This. And even with an AT&T employee discount your bill will probably be more than an EM+ Plan on T-mobile lol.
If you're complaining about 3mbps down on T-mobile, you're in for a big surprise on AT&T lol. AT&T hasn't even come close to pushing out any large number of HSDPA sites, and only somewhat has HSUPA in affect. Not like it matters though, any AT&T branded phone's firmware is restricting those speeds anyways. Everyone does better in different areas so whatever works for you is best I suppose, I just find it hard to believe you're going to be getting better speeds on AT&T than T-mo.
3mbps down is more than enough to handle any normal stuff you're doing on your phone.

exactly what i was gonna say. my jaw dropped when a canadian is dissing the US carriers haha
theyre all in it to rape our wallets guys...nature of the beast. canada HAS gotten better, except they all still believe in 3 year contracts, which is complete BS imo. BUT the CRTC last year also ruled to implement early contract termination fees cannot exceed a max of $400, it used to be $20 a month for every month remaining in your contract....do the math on that!
all dissing aside, bell still rapes on data overages, rogers doesnt really give two ****s about overages, and telus just likes to charge you whatever the heck they feel like that month.
rogers right now is almost on par with some of our american counterparts, i have a family share plan with them, 800 mins with evenings and wknds start at 4pm, nationwide fav 10 for each device, unltd txt/pic/vid, unltd social networking data, 4gb data shared, call id/vm all that jazz for 128 tax in a month for the two devices. seperatly we used to pay over 160 combined. so its slowly getting better we just need new devices! canadas providers are soooo slooow to get the new toys.
my .02...and ive been with all the big 3

oh god... gtfo we don't need Canada/US battles. Seriously. Canada also has a smaller population than some of our states. A little different.
But you really must be high if you think that the Canadian carriers are treating consumers well... they're in the same boat as the US carriers. Neither of us are in the good carrier position that the European countries are in.

that's exactly where we are heading as well
i've been in this motto since the first smartphone was produced by Palm
and now the top of the iceberg is the Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989 (Hercules), true quad bands on 3G and 2G as well as 4G, although we all know that is not really a true 4G not even LTE is true 4G but heck, since all the marketing says so, lets stick with it. LOL
check out the new hands on for the Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989 (Hercules)
I don't know if this is a question or more of a poll...
I think I'm getting horrible 3G speeds here in Austin, TX. It also seems like I'm being capped. When I have full bars, speedtest always shows around a 3Mbps down and 1 Mbps up transfer speeds. I've tested this in many places around North Austin / Round Rock.
What speeds are others getting?
Could my sim card or data plan need tweaking from AT&T? I ask this because I was previously on a Galaxy Note with LTE and they had to switch me to a LTE plan at the time. Outside where I work, the LTE signal strength is very strong and I've gotten amazing speeds with the Note. But with the Nexus, I get the 3/1 speeds.
Any ideas?
What are your APN settings, also are you on the smartphone or medianet plan?

I'm on a smartphone plan. Which APN settings are you wanting? There are a lot!
I live in Bastrop, like 30 miles east of Austin, and am getting about 2.5-3 down and .4-1.2 up. I was pretty disappointed because I thought I had remembered pulling more on my Captivate(smart phone plan though), too bad it broke. I'm using the MediaNet plan on ATT with AndroidHD Revolution(4.1.1) and Franco r223.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
If you're on the smartphone plan, I'm assuming you're using the "phone" apn? Also, you're aware that you can get unlimited hspa with the non smartphone plan formerly known as media net.
Who knows this could be purely speculation but let's say AT&T already has your imei number you could be automatically bumped to the same smartphone data plan if you attempt to use the dumb phone plan.
I am unsure how quick AT&T is figuring this stuff out. I had an AT&T GS2 and switched to a dumb flip phone then bought a GNex, took the sim card out of the dumb one and transplanted into the GNex and boom, unlimited data and texting for $30 a month.
I'm already on an unlimited smartphone plan. I chatted with AT&T support and there are currently no restrictions on my data plan. He also switch IMEI from the Note to the Nexus and moved me from a LTE plan to 3G plan. Data speeds remain the same.
I wonder if anyone with a GSM Nexus in Austin is able to get > 3Mbps...

You are on a SGS2 with HSPA+? Which city are you in?
Try testing with actual downloads instead of speed test sites. My speed test (I'm in northern Colorado) always tells me about 3Mb/s down 1Mb/s up too, but on actual downloads and manual tests, I hit 8-10 Mb/s even in kind of rural areas.
I'm in Indiana and get around 3-4mbit down and 1-1.5mbit up. The fastest ive seen once is 7mbit down.

I remember with the captivate, the speeds would vary widely depending on which part of town I was in. But with the Nexus, it just seems very artificial to hit right around 3 down / 1 up every time. Almost like AT&T is capping it similar to what they did to the captivate. The modem AT&T put on the captivate was throttled for whatever reason but flashing an international modem removed it.

Yeah. I had to send my Gnex in for service. Only got to use it for 17 days
Harbor Springs Michigan
Sorry to bring back an old thread, but I am wondering on this myself. I bought my gnex from google play, got it and noticed that the data rates are pretty steady at around 2.5 - 3.5 max down, and .9 - 1.2 up. The gnex has a 21Mbit HSPA+ radio in it, so in theory it should accept whatever AT&T can push to it. However, I came from an Atrix 2, and can vouch for the fact that the Atrix 2 when using the PTA APN on HSPA+ (no LTE for about 200 miles where I'm at) will download consistently between 7 - 9 Mbit... Same server on speediest.net, same APN, same place, the signal is within 1dBm of each other.
Because I have found no base band that can change this, nor any APN setting I am starting to believe that if AT&T gets an IMEI of a phone that it doesnt recognize, they will throttle it.
Any one else have any insight? 3.5Mbit is plenty, but I'd like to get the same speeds as what I consider a lesser device.
If I could find a way to change the IMEI I'd test this theory.
^^^ Suprisingly, Its not att at all. Ask anyone on these forums, samsung has notoriously bad radios. Signal and cell strength just are not that great. And you can you can especially feel the difference coming from a motorola device. They have the strongest radios of all the major oems by far. No one even comes close.

Thanks for this update. just saw it. It's frustrating knowing our phones could do so much better.
I am looking to purchase the Note 2 and I have the option of Sprint or AT&T, is there any real benefit of one carrier vs the other for this particular phone?

Im pretty sure the phones are the exact same but with at&t your service may be better depending on your location. Sprint is behind on 4g and 4g lte coverage. Sprint has unlimited data and I don't think at&t offers that. So if I were you I would ask friends that live in your area to get their opinions or even google search and see if you can find any forums that tell about at&t coverage in your area. Coverage is exactly what you should look at.
We have an att note 2 and a sprint note 2....equally fantastic. Coverage in my area is pretty much the same here, the wife just wants to stick with att since she has had them so long.
If one didnt have unlimited on att ...I would def look towards sprint
Is att still throttling after 5gb of use? Thats a huge factor on why I gave up my line
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda app-developers app
Since AT&T throttles all unlimited data plans (except those that were grandfathered in) past 5gb/mo. But Sprint doesn't yet have the extensive LTE coverage that AT&T does. If you live in an area where Sprint has rolled out its 4G LTE network, or predominantly use Wifi, I'd suggest Sprint. On the other hand, if Sprint only has 3G in your home zone and you can't rely on wifi consistently when you need the higher speeds, AT&T may be the way to go. I've been with Sprint for nearly 15 years and don't mind waiting for their LTE network. (tho I certainly hope for sooner rather than later) For me, the bandwidth throttling on downloads over the 5GB/mo is a deal breaker. I typically use 25+GB/mo on my phone and Sprint never throttles by bandwidth.
* I'm Rick James, *****! *
I can confirm no throttling by Sprint. Since getting the GN2, I''m using over 50GB of data per month. It's up from the 25GB or more when I had the Evo 4G and used 3G almost exclusive; I had access to WiMax if I went to certain towns. I live in area LTE, but it's not everywhere, so I bounce between both all the time.
The other big difference, Sprint is CDMA and has the simcard built in. ATT is GMA, which is used world wide. ATT may not have the simcard build in, and thus world travel friendly. Something to consider if you plan on traveling.
Beyond that, I would just look at your data usages, carrier coverage, and reliability.
Lastly, you do realize we're going to be bias to Sprint.

A slight correction here, the Sprint GN2 can be used "worldwide," but only in certain areas I believe. And you'll be paying out the ass for the service, as you cannot put a cheapy sim in there, you have to pay for Sprint's world service. Sucks
So yes if travel is something that you need to do with your GN2, ATT may be the better carrier. But you'll probably save a good $30 a month with Sprint, which is more than enough to cover a cheap burner phone purchase for when you're traveling. Keep the note on ya for wifi connectivity, use the burner for phone calls, save money
the above is correct that the phone as some kind of GSM radio in it. And that you pay a mighty fee to use it too. I wasn't thinking about that when I wrote my post. I know a lot people prefer to just sim card swap and be able to use the local, and cheap, service. Also, GSM is used workd wide. Whereas, CDMA is not. Some carriers in the USA used. There are a couple others carriers outside the USA, but they're far and few.
If you can hold out for Sprint LTE to get some decent nationwide coverage, go with Sprint. Unlimited data is CRUCIAL. 3G is manageable for now.
I would check with speedtest on an att and Sprint phone. Also check Sprint 4g lte coverage in your area. If they have it or are on list to get it then choose Sprint. Sprint keeps improving every week. But if it looks like Sprint won't be good for a while in your area and att is already good and you don't mind higher prices and tiered data then choose att.

If you have unlimited At&T right now then by all means don't switch to sprint. My friend has a grandfathered at&t plan and im really jealous. Everywhere in texas that I actually have lte his speed test beats mine 15 mbs or more. His has 4g lte EVERYWHERE. I can't speak on behalf of the entire United States but as for Texas, you should go with at&t if you have unlimited.

As I'm unsure where you are located, I'm sure this won't help you, but here is a Sprint lte speed test. At my house, just south of Baltimore.

What's the coverage like in your area? How much data do you use? How much are you willing to pay?
If you do have "unlimited" grandfathered data, it is still throttled after a couple gigs, meaning you'd likely be better off with Sprint if they have the coverage.
Regarding price, Sprint is usually cheaper for family plans, but not necessarily for individuals.
http://www.gottabemobile.com/2014/06/04/sprint-and-t-mobile-agree-on-merger-terms/
lets hope it doesn't go through.
what are your guys/gals thoughts on it?
PS: if its in the wrong area or doesnt need to exist just move/delete it.
I don't know anything about the phone services but I do know that T-Mobile has made no attempt to lock me out of the hardware I have purchased. Does Sprint lock the bootloader?
Frank
This makes no sense as tmobile is on a role with their un carrier strategy. No sense at all.
DEMON GALAXY NO SOULS NOTED !!!!!
i dropped sprint it was horrid do not want anything to do with them period ! i left att for tmobile and have been very happy .. im hoping the FCC jumps in and stop this cluster **** from happening
For once I hope the FCC does the right thing and doesn't allow this to go through.

even if it does go through, there's a good chance John Legere runs the show
Obvious question- will they be CDMA or GSM after this goes through? Or both?
Sprint wants them for the LTE spectrum they have so it's not going to matter if it's CDMA or GsM

Then its going to be gsm since it would be for the LTE. Look at what happened when the mergered with metropcs. Honestly that is too much mergers.

I just left sprint for t-mobile last month it's hard to admit that I was with sprint for about 7 years then they went to crap on their network I truly hope that this merger doesn't happen. Is there any way us people can start a petition? do we even have a say in this type of matter? I will do anything to stay away from sprint!

I had sprint on the epic4gtouch and note 2, the speeds were horrid but the bootloaders were unlocked like tmobile. I dont want the merger to happen either because im sure prices will go up since its less competition, but cant do anything about it and hope john legere would still run things over on his side.

Bloomberg: John Legere likely to be CEO of combined Sprint/T-Mobile if deal goes ahead
To be honest screw Sprint but if john legere does become CEO then you're looking at a force aimed at destroying Verizon and att. John leger is a beast. He's the reason why Tmobile is Tmobile the way it is today. Unlimited data, no more contract, JUMP program. This guy is a beast. If it doesn't go through then sprint will be paying up $1billion to Tmobile. More money for towers and LTE spectrum

Personally I'm against this merger but these things run through my head...
1. Sprint is not buying out T-Mobile. Softbank is the company trying to do that. They just happen to own Sprint.
2. If this were to happen could it go down like how Cingular did with AT&T. Memory trip, Cingular bought out AT&T Wireless...and yet AT&T remained and Cingular dropped their name. Could this happen with T-Mobile. T-Mobile is the IT brand, Sprint is the sh!t brand.
2a. Notice who is talking about the Sprint CEO? Nobody.
3. T-Mobile will stay GSM. CDMA for all intent and purposes is dead. Even Verizon is using GSM.
4. With TMoUS in charge they could get access to areas that would be grandfathered in.
Again, I'm against the deal but these are things running through my mind.

Sprint has pretty much stopped working on their network vision rollout. My friend who works for Sprint said Sprint techs are jumping ship left and going to t-mo. I think this is going to happen, and it quite possibly is a good thing. For me I have one thing to say : as far as me, *grandfathered* Just will have better coverage, with Sprint's towers, and Legere at the helm. Hoorah!

I left those bastards when the note 3 came out. I pray to the cell phone gods this does not happen.
You guys remember when Sprint took over Nextel? Disaster, total disaster.

Hi guys i have been skimming this forum for years learning to root different phones and tablets, but only as a guest.
Today i had my sprint note 4 successfully unlocked and it now runs on AT&T through straight talk.
I am getting 10 times better service signal and data wise with hspa over sprints horrible 3g service in Virginia.
Anyway i am happy with everything, but i have a question. I have cross referenced the specs between the att, tmobile, verizon and sprint variants of the note 4 and all show they have the same bands available, what are the chances that someone has gotten AT&T true 4g lte working on a sprint branded phone, is it possible and if not why?.
Thanks in advance
Sent from my SM-N910P using Tapatalk
If this is true. Good. Lots are speculating no data on the other variants while on the sprint note 4. So are you complete domestic unlocked or just unlocked for international. ?
Sent from my SM-N910P using XDA Free mobile app
Complete domestic unlock, able to use any mvno for AT&T or TMobile, im using straight talks AT&T network personally. Here is pics of my status, i have wifi on here at home is why it says data not connected, but im getting 7.9mb/s dl on hspa consistently

How were you able to unlock the sprint note 4?
http://idoneapps.webs.com/sprint-galaxy-global-unlock
Was recommended by another member on here, dude from this sight rooted and did the complete unlock remotely for me for 50 bucks. Cant beat it at all! Great customer service and the guy literally answered like 40 emails back and forth of questions i had before i even paid him.
Cant express how happy i am to actually be able to use my note 4 as intended. It was a paperweight with sprint service.

Same hear where i live we havent even gotten 4g at all, sprint doesnt have a native network and rely off a local cell provider, they have been promising me 4g since 2013. My phone was a brick until i unlocked it and moved to straught talk, couldnt be happier

I unlocked mine with a z3x box but I am currently unable to get HSPA or 4g, only 3g with at&t gophone. Any clue as to what is different between our devices? I have the sprint variant as well.

Try the nv item edit ie use nv calculator, qpst/qxdm, enable extra gsm/umts/lte bands. Then set your apn up with LTE or unspecified as bearer

there may be something wrong with your modem. I would suggest resetting modem changes and provisioning with a reset + ##786# + ##72786#, etc and put everything back to stock and start over. ..all just a suggestion as I am fairly sure that is the best you'll get out of the Note 4 (N910P)
you may want to go to frequencycheck and make sure the bands your attempting are even a possibility ...https://www.frequencycheck.com/comp...n920p-galaxy-note-5-td-lte-32gb-samsung-noble

May be your sim card. Is it a 4g sim?
Also make sure your apn is correct. Check this: https://www.att.com/esupport/article.html#!/wireless/KB424489
I am getting true 4G LTE through straight talk on my Sprint note edge. I used idoneapps to unlock it. Enabled ehrpd, enabled lte, and set 1x to hybrid. After restart I went to apn settings and selected automatic and used the straight talk apn that my lte Sim card came with. I am using a Sim card I got from a zte straight talk phone, not the Sim card packpack.
