[Q] Having an issue with wifi tethering - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Hey guys! I have a Galaxy SII SGH-T989 and I'm trying to use the wifi tethering on it for free, without paying their crappy $14.99 per month extra. I've tried 3rd party apps, can't see the network on my other devices. I uninstalled the tethering provisioning app with titanium backup, and now when i start the tethering I can't connect any devices to it, I receive an error on the devices saying couldn't connect. Is there anything I'm doing wrong, or anything I can do to make this happen? I'm willing to try anything. I've looked everywhere, and none of the solutions I've found are working. Any help is much appreciated! Thanks!
EDIT: When running WiFi Tether, when I check the log, The following things say failed on them:
Setting ad-hoc mode...
Setting essid...
Setting channel...

After hours of trying, i found a temporary fix. I backed up my room and installed cyanogenmod, and the wifi tether worked great on that. However, id really rather stick with my stock rom, i enjoy having the full functionality of syncing with my google account, syncing my apps, etc. So if there is some type of fix that would work that would be awesome, i really dont want to have to backup and restore everytime i want to tether. Thanks!

Use wifi tether from the market. You have to be rooted and set the app to your phone model in settings.

You can still sync your information with a ROM. As long as you are logging in with your Gmail account and click the option during setup to sync the information, it will be there. My ROM is in my signature, and the tethering works great, just have to click to turn it on.

Using the phone for only calls/sms/mms

So now that I have my G2, I want to give this phone to my brother. He's a basic phone type of guy... only wanting it to make calls and send sms/mms. No need for mobile web browsing or email checking etc. SO, with that in mind, how can I allow him to do that? I see I can disable data in the wireless settings, but won't that also disable MMS then? I also see I can add a Block Email service, but not sure if thats the same as blocming the Google Email and the EMail app from accessing data...
To be honest, I think the easiest way around all that it to delete the apk's not needed in the .zip/ROM before installing. I remove DSPmanager, Development, Browser, Email, YouTube, Quicksearch bar, Protips, ALL of the wallpaper APKs including liveWallaper, SoundRecorder... to 1). make the install rom smaller 2). remove things I never use or intend to use.
Then simply don't install the GAPPS unless he wants GPS or something. Hope this helps out.
EDIT: By not installing GAPPS you have removed the step for signing into any email account, thus negating the need to block any emails ;-).
Easiest thing to do would just be to gave web blocked by tmob on his line. That way he could use all the features when connected to wifi.

This seems like the best solution as he will still want to use things over wifi. My brother is a full time student living with my parents and not willing to pay the extra fee for data usage or data plans. I tried simply not linking to a google account, but it seems at random the phone still hits up the mobile data for whatever background stuff is happening, and am fearing that it is incurring data charges.
Thanks
Just thought of something. Years ago when I worked for Nokia, MMS and Internet used different APN settings... now it's been years since I meddled with this stuff so don't know if it has changed or not, but is there a way to mangle the APN settings for that just the Internet/Web settings are borked and MMS will still work? On my G2, I can go into the APN list, and I only see one entry, but no means of editing them... His phone is running CM 6.1.1 (I put a stable ROM on his since he is not good at all with flashing roms, let alone running experimental builds).
I mean you can also use "Firewall" for root users, which is on the market.
Restrict internet to browser if person is not gonna use browser and so on.
You could also uninstall system apps, or corrupt them.

I'll have to look into Firewall.
Corrupting/uninstalling apps is not ideal because again, I'd like him to have full functionality when using Wifi, I just do not want his phone using 3g for anything other than MMS.

Wireless tethering not working

What's wrong?
You'll prob have to give a little more info to get a response. What have you tried to get tether to work?
What version?
Rom info?
You need to be a bit more informative. Are you referring to the wireless tether app? Sprint's Hotspots app? What rom are you using? Are you trying to connect via 3g or 4G? Are there any error messages?
posting & replying via the XDA Premium app.
Sorry. I am using Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo. It's the wireless tether app and when I tap the wifi logo it says "unable to start tethering. Please try again!" I'm trying to use 3G and when I try, it disconnects me from wifi.
Uninstall it, then try it again.
Yeah, I have had that happen before on a Sense ROM, can't remember which. Just uninstall and reinstall until it works.
I think I'll just deal with it. I just now got everything to my liking as far as settings and things are concerned. Is CM7's wireless tether working? I may try that ROM.
It's REALLY easy to uninstall and reinstall the app, I shouldn't take much to get it working. Built in tether works fine for me on CM7.

Go into applications, find it, uninstall it, then re-download from the market, try again.
The native hotspot will work in both roms.
Wireless tether WILL NOT work in CM7/gingerbread rom, so don't do it.

WIFI Tethering on T-mobile

Do you know of any settings to have wifi tethering work without the hotspot plan?
With my old HTC sensation I just had to create a new apn with (epc.tmobile.com) to make it work, but with the GIII this is a no go....
If you are rooted...this works great:

Foxfi In the Play Store. No root needed just read the description to make sure it supports your device.
Thanks, will try Foxfi and let you know if works.
Thanks

Look over here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766155&highlight=hotspot
several us (at least on verizon) seem to be able to do it just with toggles. Those with other carriers let us know if it works for you...
Thanks for the info,
I have tried the widgets option but still no go.
Still getting the T-Mobile Hotspot signup page...
anyone able to get this working?
I've also noticed this to be annoying. My HTC Sensation would tether no problem on the same data package. Now T-Mobile has it locked down somehow. Hmm.

Do this, go to Google Play and download (WiFi Tether For Root Users) open the app go to settings, 1) Change device-Profile to Generic ICS. 2) Change Setup-Method to Netd (master). Now go back and click on the big WiFi icon to start tethering, soon as the system finds the device pull down the notification and authorize it, make sure the Access-Control is enabled., your're all set, good luck.

I guess this will encourage him to ROOT, one of the perks you get being rooted.
T mobile can be a real pain in the ass with blocking tethering. I don't believe the app matters best way I know to get around it is to change the user agent on the computer and do not use internet explorer. I believe chrome and firefox have plugins for that.
I tried FoxFi on a non-rooted stock t999, doesn't work. Sends out the wifi signal, but the computer never actually connects to it. Keeps giving me some kind of error when trying to connect to wifi.
Using the built in tether wifi option, I can connect to the wifi being supplied by the sgs3, but any web activity takes me to the t-mobile hotspot sign up page.
OP use firefox, not chrome to tether. seriously.
and you can try downloading the 'tether' app from the clockworkmod website. google it.
I tether my nexus 7 from my sgs3 with foxfi and its really simple. Just make sure u install pdanet on the device u want to tether. I'm doing a tether with Bluetooth.

On my S3, I only need to turn on tethering and it works. I small on t-mobile S3 not rooted and I don't have any additional tethering on my plan.

Very interesting, i use wifi tether for root users and after using for awhile i get a push message saying i need to stop tethering or it will be blocked, and then i recieve another saying it has been blocked, its a push message so im wondering if t-mobile has a app hidden inside the touchwiz rom to make sure it cant tether... sigh
Hi!
I just installed Foxfi app. on my phone. I noticed there is also an app. called "Foxfi AddOn" and according to the description it provides some optional features to the Foxfi application.
Has anyone installed this app? The reason I am asking this question is because I noticed that by agreeing to install this app., personal information is accessed ("general info about what you are doing with the phone, potentially including personal or private info").
The above quote I got when I press to "install" the app., so I would appreciate any feedback/advice on installing this app. Thanks!

Wifi grayed out

This has been going on for some time now. I cannot actually pinpoint when it happened. But whenever I am at work, I can connect to the network and it's grayed out. I can still browse and use some app but I don't get notifications from my apps and cannot use Google Talk, for example. That entire app is grayed out.
It's an 802.1x EAP - PEAP - MSCHAPV2.
Anyone got any ideas or tricks to fix this? It used to work before and it doesn't. I do not believe anything changed on our end. And I also cannot just restart the router at work. Thanks in advance.

Can you access gmail directly? Sounds like google services may be blocked by your network admin? Just a guess...
Im trying to understand what exactly is happening with you.
Are you getting a wifi signal and no notifications?
or are you not getting any wifi signal at all?
If you are getting a connection but notifications and google apps dont work, it could be that your work router those ports blocked or has a firewall infront of it.
If you are not getting any wifi signal at all, I would try and backup everything, and do a factory rest - update. basically a stock, unrooted wipe and reflash.
Don't know why our how to fix it. But I know that if your wifi is gray you still have data connection. And if it's blue your connected to Google services as well
Jellin' like a felon
Okay, thanks guys. The ports may be blocked. I get WiFi connection, but the indicator is grayed out. When that is so, I can still go into an app and use it with manual refreshes but I never get notifications automatically like I'm supposed to. They only start to pop in one I leave with and get back in the cellular network. And for an app like gtalk, I cannot use whatsoever as I'm signed out.

This happened to me before and basically it was how my IT guy setup our WiFi network in our office. I couldn't use any Google push services on my phone (gmail, gtalk, calender, etc...). Every thing would work fine when I was on data connection, but would stop on WiFi. I just stopped using my work WiFi when I was in the office. It definitely had something to do with the firewall/privileges of the WiFi network.

port blocked..
google push notification and so gtalk need ports like 5222,5223,5228
usually in a work wifi only port 80 (http traffic) and 443 (httpS traffic) are open

Do you have wifi set to turn off when the display turns off?
I came across this thread because I'm having the same problem with my GS3, the only thing that solved it was installing a WiFi manager app from the market.
Factory reset plus downgrading from 4.2.2 to 4.2.0 was the only thing that worked for me.
FIX FOR GREY WIFI/MOBILE DATA, and google account sync
HI THERE, sorry im new to e forum, anyways im using a SGS 3LTE with custom rom CM 10.2 android 4.3, CWM touch recovery. So many people are not able to connect to the play store and services over wifi, but only over mobile data. Another issue is that the cellular data and wifi tend to remain grey, unlike that of android 4.0 and back which remains blue. So to solve this heres what i did.
DID EVERY F**KING CRAP OUT THERE. DIDNT WORK.
What i did: use a file manager with root access, look for 'hosts' file in systempath 'system/etc/' and deleted it. So far so good, its permanently blue for both wifi and cellular data, and also i am able to access google apps and store without a hitch.
DO SHARE WITH ME UR FINDINGS/RESULTS AND SPREAD THE LOVE PEOPLE
On a side note: i used to flash and modify small roms for my old htc hd2, but the above fix was heard from a website from god knows where LOL, im singaporean, i speak singlish, and im proud of it so im not gonna apologise for the broken english
In case this helps anyone, the way I solved it at home with my Galaxy Nexus is by changing the setting of the router to Wireless G or N only. I have two routers, so I set one on 802.11g and the other on 802.11n only. By default my DLinks came with mixed wireless protocols. The problem with this is that it seems to confuse devices. That's why they also used to take long to connect to Wifi in general. Since I've made them only one standard now, they connect very quickly. Also, because I had mixed B, G and N on my best router, I never got to really use N. Turns out I had my authentication on WEP, and the only way you're getting N is by using WEP2 with AES.
Fix is here
Hello There, I tried to reset phone, clearing chache,Data but it wont work but now
I have a quick solution on this issue and grey wifi becomes blue in some minutes.
All you need is "Rooted Phone"
1.Install : Root Explorer
2. Grant SuperSU permission to Root Explorer
3. Mount Root Explorer into Read/Write (R/W).
4. Go To System > etc > locate "HOSTS" file in etc folder.
5. Edit Hosts file using root explorer
6. Insert the symbol # before the second set of IP address numbers then save the changes and exit.
7. Reboot your phone...
8. wifi icon will be blue as you start your phone back and some apps like Google play store, keep, etc will be start as normal.
Thanks.

Same thing happened to me! I'm running a rooted stock ROM though, so I have no idea.
However, I did notice something odd.
If you use Wifi Tether Router, you can actually access anything Google related just fine. However, if you try to access anything else, it doesn't work. (At least for me)

Nope can't do that because I'm still on the stock recovery, and I'd like to stay that way.
Anyway I've figured out the issue is that I can only access anything through HTTPS. If I don't use HTTPS, then the site won't work. This is something T-mobile is blocking. Is there any way around this?
