This has been going on for some time now. I cannot actually pinpoint when it happened. But whenever I am at work, I can connect to the network and it's grayed out. I can still browse and use some app but I don't get notifications from my apps and cannot use Google Talk, for example. That entire app is grayed out.
It's an 802.1x EAP - PEAP - MSCHAPV2.
Anyone got any ideas or tricks to fix this? It used to work before and it doesn't. I do not believe anything changed on our end. And I also cannot just restart the router at work. Thanks in advance.

Can you access gmail directly? Sounds like google services may be blocked by your network admin? Just a guess...
Im trying to understand what exactly is happening with you.
Are you getting a wifi signal and no notifications?
or are you not getting any wifi signal at all?
If you are getting a connection but notifications and google apps dont work, it could be that your work router those ports blocked or has a firewall infront of it.
If you are not getting any wifi signal at all, I would try and backup everything, and do a factory rest - update. basically a stock, unrooted wipe and reflash.
Don't know why our how to fix it. But I know that if your wifi is gray you still have data connection. And if it's blue your connected to Google services as well
Jellin' like a felon
Okay, thanks guys. The ports may be blocked. I get WiFi connection, but the indicator is grayed out. When that is so, I can still go into an app and use it with manual refreshes but I never get notifications automatically like I'm supposed to. They only start to pop in one I leave with and get back in the cellular network. And for an app like gtalk, I cannot use whatsoever as I'm signed out.

This happened to me before and basically it was how my IT guy setup our WiFi network in our office. I couldn't use any Google push services on my phone (gmail, gtalk, calender, etc...). Every thing would work fine when I was on data connection, but would stop on WiFi. I just stopped using my work WiFi when I was in the office. It definitely had something to do with the firewall/privileges of the WiFi network.

port blocked..
google push notification and so gtalk need ports like 5222,5223,5228
usually in a work wifi only port 80 (http traffic) and 443 (httpS traffic) are open

Do you have wifi set to turn off when the display turns off?
I came across this thread because I'm having the same problem with my GS3, the only thing that solved it was installing a WiFi manager app from the market.
Factory reset plus downgrading from 4.2.2 to 4.2.0 was the only thing that worked for me.
FIX FOR GREY WIFI/MOBILE DATA, and google account sync
HI THERE, sorry im new to e forum, anyways im using a SGS 3LTE with custom rom CM 10.2 android 4.3, CWM touch recovery. So many people are not able to connect to the play store and services over wifi, but only over mobile data. Another issue is that the cellular data and wifi tend to remain grey, unlike that of android 4.0 and back which remains blue. So to solve this heres what i did.
DID EVERY F**KING CRAP OUT THERE. DIDNT WORK.
What i did: use a file manager with root access, look for 'hosts' file in systempath 'system/etc/' and deleted it. So far so good, its permanently blue for both wifi and cellular data, and also i am able to access google apps and store without a hitch.
DO SHARE WITH ME UR FINDINGS/RESULTS AND SPREAD THE LOVE PEOPLE
On a side note: i used to flash and modify small roms for my old htc hd2, but the above fix was heard from a website from god knows where LOL, im singaporean, i speak singlish, and im proud of it so im not gonna apologise for the broken english
In case this helps anyone, the way I solved it at home with my Galaxy Nexus is by changing the setting of the router to Wireless G or N only. I have two routers, so I set one on 802.11g and the other on 802.11n only. By default my DLinks came with mixed wireless protocols. The problem with this is that it seems to confuse devices. That's why they also used to take long to connect to Wifi in general. Since I've made them only one standard now, they connect very quickly. Also, because I had mixed B, G and N on my best router, I never got to really use N. Turns out I had my authentication on WEP, and the only way you're getting N is by using WEP2 with AES.
Fix is here
Hello There, I tried to reset phone, clearing chache,Data but it wont work but now
I have a quick solution on this issue and grey wifi becomes blue in some minutes.
All you need is "Rooted Phone"
1.Install : Root Explorer
2. Grant SuperSU permission to Root Explorer
3. Mount Root Explorer into Read/Write (R/W).
4. Go To System > etc > locate "HOSTS" file in etc folder.
5. Edit Hosts file using root explorer
6. Insert the symbol # before the second set of IP address numbers then save the changes and exit.
7. Reboot your phone...
8. wifi icon will be blue as you start your phone back and some apps like Google play store, keep, etc will be start as normal.
Thanks.

I downloaded fake gps on my a100 and set myself to monaco for a laugh....
big oops that was, now i can't get back home...
When I connect to mobile 3g or anyother wifi, the gps is fine, but at home on my hub, it allways sets me to monaco.... (wish i did live there!!!!)
I've deleted fake gps, and reset my hub.. nothing works. It must be linked to my wifi at home but how can I get it working again......
Thanks in advance....
Try this: go to settings > developer options > uncheck allow mock locations.
Sent from my A100 using Tapatalk 2
Done that. Even done a reset agps state.... nothing.... only reports wrong GPS state when at home..... annoying more than anything
On the market it says to disable the use wireless networks option in loction settings to avoid the issue you are having. Have you tried that?
Sent from my A100 using Tapatalk 2
Tried that, no joy. (or very very slow). Fake GPS obviously set something somewhere that needs to be reset. Grrrrrrr. Wifi GPS all ways worked fine before.... not a major problem this, just a tad annoying ....
Are you rooted? You could try deleting the files in data/GPS/...make a backup first of course

Try an app called faster fix, and reset your GPS pool it may trigger a re center on your location.
Tapatalked from my Galaxy S II.
Downloaded and run. Selected UK and hit go. Message at bottom says failure, please try again'
Try deleting your home wifi, rebooting, and re- adding your home wifi. It has to be something associated with your home wifi, since it works OK everywhere else. If that don't work, email the app dev.
Sent from my A100 using Tapatalk 2
I looked at the app in play store to get email address and noticed they have now put a warning on the description to make sure you disable use wifi for GPS before running to avoid problems.
Grrrrrr if only they had put that before I'd run it... others beware.
I have emailed them and will post reply.
Cheers anyway all.
Got it sorted. Original dev of app didn't help at all, just said look in forums....idiot.
I reset router, turned off wifi GPS and left tablet for 2 hours getting a GPS signal. I then turned on wifi and it worked..... oh well... cheers for help
Could somebody give me a link to or send me the GPS directory files. I will try deleting mine and copy the working once.
My GPS is still dead...not even a single sat after hours. I have tried the patch No2 now I am going to try the No1 Patch.
Hey filking - I had the same trouble as you with fake GPS and I've tried all the recommended steps you mentioned but to no avail.
Do you mind listing them out step by step what you did so I can make sure I'm doing the right fix?
Many thanks
I am at my wits end here.
I changed operators about a month ago, from a weak operator to the best operator in my Country(with the strongest signal). Ever since then, I don't know if it's a coincedence, I am experiencing this incredibly annoying error. Ironically, with my previous operator who had a much worse signal this never happened before. The only difference here is that my previous operator used a regular micro SIM card and my new operator is using something called USIM. I don't know if that has anything to do with it.
It doesn't happen every time, it's really sporadical, sometimes it works everytime, sometimes it doesn't. I open Gmail and I receive a "No connection" and a retry button. I go to Play Store and get the same thing, my Gtalk gets disconnected. I hit the retry button and sometimes it connects immediatelly and sometimes I have to tap it numerous times.
What's weird about it, I always have the strongest HSDPA signal, full bars and browsing the web works. It's just the Google apps that get disconnected. It is incredibly annoying.
Things I have tried to solve this:
1. Clear cache and data for all gapps
2. Clear dalvik
3. messed with my APN settings(they are 100% correct, checked with the operator)
4. Full wipe
5. Repair with PC Companion with no additional apps installed.
6. New SIM from my operator
Nothing has helped. This keeps happening. I have no idea what to do.
Does anyone have any idea how to solve this? Any idea is appreciated. I am running ICS 6.1.A.2.55.
Thanks
I get the same problem sometimes. Usually while activating wifi, but it happens when i'm on 2G/3G as well. Totally random and i'm on a weaker operator.
On 2.55 as well (no mods at this moment), with ics17 kernel

Could you please elaborate on this? How does this app work, what's the point? I just installed it and I'm not sure what I will accomplish with this.
Run the app and check the "Tunnel whole device". When it is successfully connected, a green dot will appear.
After that, test Google apps.
Report result please.

so, anything from google (stock browser, youtube, gmail, play store) are having retry error ? but apps like whatsapp, viber, opera browser just run flawlessly ? if thats the problem.. like i mention above, download 3g reconnect. the apps seems to force google apps to use data connection instead staying idle.
i recommend that apps bcause im having the same problem, having retry error on youtube and play store, and gmail just wont sync but opera and whatsapp run like normal.
read the description on that apps before download.

My brand new G3 won't let me save any WiFi network passwords. It also says "failed to connect " for every network and has me 're enter the paraphrase every time.
Even though this happens it will connect to some networks. But in the WiFi status screen where you choose your network, it doesn't show me as connected.
Anyone else having similar issues?
EDIT: FIX FOUND:

I have just tried to connect to another network and have the same problem - works fine at my place, but not my parents' place. Problem is definitely phone related not network related.

I have tried that already - tried WPA2 TKIP and AES. Don't really want to lower my security any further.
Fortunately I'm not here very often, and I get 4G data with my 8GB allowance, so can always use mobile data.
Did you remove or freeze any of the LG bloatware? Stuff like Wfd services control the Wi-FI.
I also had this problem and I had to do a factory reset to fix it.
I'm having the same issue. it will connect to the open networks but wont save them. have no problem connecting to wifi that is protected though. I did freeze some apps...not sure which one did it though. probably one of the carrier iq ones if its my luck. i have the tmobile model
Just did a reset. First I did not let Google restore all the passwords and everything was connecting fine. Then I did another reset where I did let Google restore and it had the problem again. It is something to do with how Google is restoring the account.... ****ing LG messed something up

Need Help Still
I have been unable to connect to some Wi-Fi networks. At my work I cannot get the phone to connect to hardly anything on Wi-Fi unless I go to the other side of the building. Then sometimes it does connect and work fine for a while then all of a sudden it starts acting like it's not connected even though it shows connected and I have to reboot the phone or turn off Wi-Fi to access anything. Then after the reboot it won't connect again. It works fine at home and in other parts of my office, but not at my desk. All my other devices (laptops tablets and old phone) were able to connect here just fine. Any Ideas?

Hello,
you must edit /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf with wifi enabled. If you try this with wifi disabled, old (wrong) configuration file is restored from unknown location backup file.
I had a same problem and all passwords in config file was right. I thing that problem was in first network block. There missed SSID and PSK="NONE" while KEY_MGMT=WPA-PSK in this block.
I replace whole config file from /system/etc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf.
Fighter
Ive had a few problems with wifi between different networks at work and when i updated my phone it solved the proble . I thought it was just the updat . When i had to do a hard reset for a different unrelated problem i got the problem back. However, when i went from Dalvik to ART it fixed the problem. Im figuring that something in the updating process sorts the wifi settings out and obviously its not limited to a software update but also includes optimization.
Deleting /data/misc/wifi/ wpa_supplicant.conf and p2p_supplicant.com solved the issue for me. hope this helps.

Hi everybody, i'm new around here and this will be my first post. Sorry if i'm posting this thread in the wrong category, but i have no idea where i should post it.
Anyway, so early morning started using my nexus 7, turn my wifi on went to play store but couldn't connect to the store, nor could i use any other apps that needed wifi. It was weird, because the wifi logo was showing, but there was no wifi.
I've never rooted it or anything, my device is still locked, could it be something wrong with the internal?
Or could i accidentally have deleted some important file? I have noticed that the clean master app uses awfully long time to find unnecessary files, when i'm using the clean option.
I really don't know what to do, as i'm not a pro.
- I hope someone on this forum can help

You can almost be certain that you did not delete anything important, as those System files require root to remove. So, that fear aside, it could be a few things you need to check. You probably just deleted the saved wifi profile information in the same way many computer cleaners clear your browser cache and you have to reenter previously saved passwords.
First, go to Settings -> Wifi and then on the left should be your SSID name and it will have something under it, which will be helpful to know. It will either say "Connected", "Secured with WPA/WP2", or "Out of Range".
If it says "Connected", your tablet is communicating with your WIFI Access Point, but for some reason is not able to get out. This is likely a router port configuration issue (which can get complicated if you do not know about them), there could be an IP Address Conflict with another device, or your internet may be out. Rebooting the Router often times fixes many issues.
If it says "Secured with xxxx" it means your tablet is seeing the access point, but there is an authentication error and they are not connected. This could be because of an encryption/password change on the router, or somehow, when you wiped your tablet, you just happened to zero out the WiFi profile for your network. If that is the case, click the Name of your network, hit "Forget", turn your Wifi off, and then back on. It should detect your network, and when you select it, prompt you for the encryption key/password for your network. Just re-enter it, and it should connect up. If you see the Wifi Signal, but it is dark on the status bar, this will cause it. If you re-enter and it does not sync up, try rebooting your tablet, and it should connect when it restart.

BTW, airesgodofwar gave you an excellent troubleshooting guide. Just make sure that all web access is not working. If that's the case, factory reset may be needed. That will wipe all user data so don't attempt that yet.

Just tried to connect to my sisters wifi hotspot and it worked yay!
Does that mean that there's something wrong with the router? And how come it's only the tablet that can't get access?
- okay, so my wifi suddenly started to work again and I have no idea why. But without your help i would probably have panicked and factory reset my device, so thanks for your help! I appreciate it.
Did you reboot it? If so, try again but leave it off for a full minute or two. Technically, I can't explain it, but it happens that something in the router gets lost/misdirected (just like on your tablet, phone, pc) and a reboot is needed. I've had every one of a dozen devices access the web through the router while one tablet could not.
If another router reboot doesn't work, turn off the modem and the router (if separate) then restart modem then router.

Likely an IP Address conflict, meaning that your router assigned 2 devices the same IP address on your LAN. I should have said, when you reboot your router (which usually solves most issues), you need to hard reset it to clear the current IP tables usually, meaning you need to unplug for 30 seconds before you plug it back in, or if it has a reset button, hold it in for 30 seconds before releasing.
Good news is that it does not sound like it has anything to do with your tablet, so no need to reset it.
hey guys, there are 2 problems I found after the auto update from Tmobile.
1. WiFi still on even you "turn off" , you can exam this by install WiFi Analyzer. This app will not work when WiFi is really turn off.
2. VPN profile will auto remove right after you hit the back button. Before the update, I saved 4 VPN profiles and everything works fine.
Why Tmobile's update always mess up things? They killed my M8 and now doing this to my G4........so annoying.!!!!!

1. Disable Wi-Fi scanning in advanced Wi-Fi setting. If checked, it stills scan for Wi-Fi signals for numerous different reasons.
2. I just installed Cisco anyconnect app and my profiles didn't get deleted hitting back button or closing the app and "force close" app in the app settings, can you describe little more in dtail? Which app are you using?

I observe the vpn bug as well. It is really annoying.
I go to settings, vpn and basic vpn. Add a profile, connect, use and disconnect.
When I go to settings, vpn and basic vpn later, there are no saved profiles. Drivers me nuts.

There are some situations that will drive you more crazy:
If you on WiFi and connect to VPN, you can disconnect VPN by just turn off WiFi.
BUT, if you using carrier's network and connect to VPN, you have no way to disconnect it!! Profile is not there, no disconnect option from notification. (It just suddenly come to my mind, you may be able to disconnect by switching to AirPlane mode, then switch back. Or turn off mobile data, then turn it back on to disconnect.)
Otherwise, you will have to restart your phone.
I see it is not just me having this issue with the VPN connections not saving.
Called t-mobile, they say they don't support vpn's, called LG, and they said maybe my phone is defective and to send it back, now here on XDA I get the scoop.
Is there a work-around or app that I can use to connect to my vpn without having to reenter the damn info everytime?
Thanks
Peter
I switched to using openvpn. Installed openvpn access server on my home server. It was ridiculously easy to set up through the web gui. You can also easily download the client configuration files from the web gui directly onto the devices. It just works.
The only downside is, it is the commercial version of their software and it only allows two concurrent users connected with the free license (not really a problem for me, but may be for others).
The android app can also put a direct shortcut on your home screen so when you press it once, it automatically connects and returns to the home screen. Just one click and you're good to go. Doesn't get any simpler.
I know it's not the answer you expected but I highly recommend openvpn
Same thing here
I purchased it yesterday and as soon as the store clerk powered it up a new OS update downloaded without any warning. I didn't think much of it at the time, but after reading your post I am sure that T-Mobile and LG did something wrong because VPN profiles don't stay saved. I hope the next update will fix it. Also, I'm discouraged to call T-Mobile or LG after reading that those calls from others who are also in the same predicament as I am were a complete waste of time . Oh well, can't win 'em all, but the phone is sure nice otherwise. If there's one thing I've learned over the years is that the amount of money you spend on a phone (or other things in general) is never a measure of quality.
