On step 2 you not yet root and install x-part ??? now i'm confuse
On step 2 it's means
You flash the file you download on step 1
using application name FlashTool (find this application somewhere in this forum)
also you need to learn how to use this FlashTool application, i think there is user name fma... he is create a lot of how to guide
(nb. i'm also like you, when first rooting android, install custom kernel, install custom rom need several days learning before
i know what i need to do)

After flashing FTF file, your device back to normal (that's why you need to root again, unless you using custom kernel that have auto root ability)
Better using application FlashTool, you can flash FTF file and after that you can also root using this application.

Hi, i own a Xperia Play since 3 days.
Normaly it is no problem for me to root my older devices and put cwm on it.
But the Xperia Play makes me angry...
I managed without problems to unlock the bootloader.
Than i installed .42. There i could root the phone and put cwm on it but when i installed a custom rom, the device stuck on "sony ericsson" bootlogo, so i need to install stock .42 again. (i rooted with superoneclick and flashtool) CWM was installed by the cwm app and "cwm-install" from the forum.
No methode works for me to install a custom rom.
Now i installed .62 tft on the device because with .42 didnt worked for me.
But now i couldn't install root(superoneclick or flashtool doesn't work). So i couldn't install a cwm.
Could you help me ? I read a lot of threads, but couldn't find an answere.
I read something with kernel, but kernels are normaly installed by customrom itself or manualy after installing rom, i am right=!
I hope you could help me, because i want a fast device.
Best regards bikerboy-030

.62 firmware is unrootable by normal methods, therefore you have to use a pre-rooted rom/kernel to have root and CWM
thanks for the fast answer!!!
Thx a lot, now i know, that i do not need to test it with this rom any more
Does an pre rootet stock rom exist, that i can install with flashtool?
So that i can install cwm over the new app? That would be awesome

Try DooMKernel. Pre-rooted and comes with CWM.
BTW there is only pre-rooted kernel, not rom. My mistake

I am in the the situation but couldn't work out how to flash new kernel.
thanks!
edit: finally figured out that I need to unlock bootloader first. strange that I didn't need to do that for my first root.
doomkernel brother !
Hey guys. This is my first post. Ive been reading the site for years and decided to make an account because i needed some advice. I can usually come here and find what i need which is the case but the info i cant get to work properly. I have found other threads about this but the programs or instructions to get the phone to root do not work. Either the program says its finished and the phone is rooted.. but its not. Other programs simply wont root. SuperOneClick errors at start however i am sure if it doesn't root 2.3.4 that it wont root 4.0.4 so i haven't been to worried about SuperOneClick. I read one forum that mentioned to download and make a folder for Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v15. I ran this program and it said it was successful however the phone still doesn't have root. I also tried a program that ran a "runme.bat" file that also said it was successful however the phone still has no root. I found a rootxperia.zip file when installed via CWM said it installed but again, still no root. This is verified in all cases by trying to open busybox with a message that it cant gain root and also with the rootchecker app. My phone is unlocked as you may already know cause i am on 4.0.4 with FXP 2.6.32.9 kernel , 9-20121108-UNOFFICIAL-zeusc Cyanogen 9.
I hope thats more than enough info. and i am trying to achieve the best in CM9. Kernel and Mod. If im not using the the best please point me in the right direction. With all the info it was quite easy to get confused. This is the only combination i found to get CM9 working with WIFI. (please no wifi questions. i tried for days to get it to work. it didnt. then when i reinstalled the kernel and mod at a later date.. it just worked. :-\ )

Download the rootXperia zip. Then go into recovery...install from sd... Rooted.
Try installing rom again then the root xperia zip right after.

i tried it already
"I found a rootxperia.zip file when installed via CWM said it installed but again, still no root."
Thanks. Although i tried that and it didnt work. Like i mentioned in my original post.
I am going to re install the mod then install the update exactly after the mod installs.
After clearing all the info in cwm and reinstalling the mod.. then installing the rootxperia.zip file.. i am still not rooted.. so this triple check still shows i have no root.

You cant root 2.3.4 R800x firmware you must downgrade to 2.3.3 with flashtool. Or unlock your bootloader and flash a custom kernel that enables su automatically. Rootxperia zip only works for 2.3.3 and below.

OK.. how do i know if a custom kernel has SU enabled? I mentioned in the post that i do have the bootloader unlocked and that i am running a kernel/rom of fxp cyanogen9.
I have SU in the app drawer but busybox and root checker both say im not rooted.
You may have to update the su app from the gplay store. Then update the binaries... Inside the su app

Start by saying I'm very new about Android and smartphone in general.
Four days ago I got my first smartphone, a Xperia Play model R800i and some friends suggested me to install ICS. I searched on the internet and I have found the Xperia Play Development forum. There, I found a really interesting ROM called "New Express ICS".
I downloaded all the files and I started to follow the guide. I'm stuck at the second point (I believe this is ridiculous): I can't get into the Recovery Mode and I didn't get if I can flash the custom kernel (bootics.img) on flash tool.
I haven't rooted my phone, it's 100% virgin, yet.
Can someone explain me what to do? I'm searching answer here and on google for three days and I'm getting even more confused.
Sorry if my english is not perfect, it isn't my first language.
You need to unlock bootloader before fastboot a kernel (bootics.img)

Thank you very much, I'm going to do this. Is this a good guide?
After that what I have to do? How I will flash the rom? Sorry for all these newbie questions.

Thanks for the link, it's very useful! Just a question: what do you mean with "read the root"? I have to root the phone?
I rooted my phone and I found the superuser app on this. Then, I unlocked the bootloader and the superuser app disappered, is it normal?
One more thing, how I flash the custom kernel and the ROM, now?
EDIT: Fail, Superuser is installed, yet, I didn't notice that
EDIT2: Why I can't get into the recovery mode?
unlock bootloader here http://www.xperiagamer.com/Beginners-Guides/unlock-the-bootloader-ramge.html
im not responsible for any damage:good:

I see you unlock your bootloader, good job! Place the ROM zip into your SD card first. Next, to get into recovery mode, just fastboot the kernel you want.
-Power off phone.
-Hold search button while connecting to PC via USB
-Open flashtool, click the thunderbolt icon, select fastboot
-Select kernel to flash (select your kernel bootics.img)
-Wait for 2 seconds and voila!
After that, power on your phone, when blue LED lights up with a vibration, spam volume button / back button (depends on kernel) then you'll be able to enter recovery

Again, read his guide on flashing kernel and roms: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2054512
Which kernel you flash is depended on the rom you want to use it with, you need to flash a GB kernel if you want to use GB rom, ICS kernel for ICS, etc, although some kernel are compatible with both ICS and JB. Search the development section for kernels and roms. If you flash a rom and it fail to boot, it mean the kernel currently installed is not compatible with that rom.
About ClockworkMod Recovery:
If you flash a custom kernel, it will likely have ClockworkMod Recovery included. Or if you are using stock Sony firmware, use the "CWM installer version 5" from this link to install CWM. Sometimes you will get a status 7 error when you try flashing a rom, it might mean you have to use a different version of ClockworkMod to flash that rom successfully.
First of all, thank you both!
Can I flash bootics.img in the Flashtool? The fma965's tutorial speaks about a "*.zip" file besides a "*.img" file.
Also, he says to use fastboot package that I have already used to unlock the bootloader.
EDIT: I need Busybox? What is it? I didn't get it.

Flash boot.img in Flashtool/Fastboot as instructions above from jeff7424:good:Zip files are what you put on your sd card and flash with cwm recovery, these can be either roms, updates to roms, zip files to change appearance, performance tweaks, too many to mention.
So .img and .ftf files use in Flashtool/Fastboot and zip files use on SD card to flash with CWM recovery.
Not to complicate it too much sometimes the boot.img comes in a .zip file you need to extract this to use in flashtool/fastboot with winra/7z unzip programs
Edit; Busybox download it with Superuser app on your phone or download a app from store to update your busybox
What is it?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BusyBox
But I don't need busybox to flash kernel and ROM, right?
You can get busybox from Play Store, just search Busybox installer, install it, open the app and install busybox.

Yeah select kernel to flash. Nope you just need an unlocked bootloader.

But I'm a bit disappointed because Crash Bandicoot disappered...
Thanks everyone, by the way.

so... this is my second problem today, the first one was with the FTS, but no its woking~
The problem is the Root. Yeah, the root...
I have tried to root my device using this and others FTS http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=43935357&postcount=2
but dont know why, if i use, for example R800i_4.0.2.A.0.69_World.ftf or R800i_4.0.2.A.0.79.ftf, my device dont accept the root...
BUT, if i use :R800i_4.0.A.2.368_World and other lower version, he accept... anyone know what to do? i'm trying to use DoomLords root, tried every version... help, again!
EDIT: now that i have tihnk for a time... the stock rom that came with the xperia play, acepted the root, so, its 2.3.2? the only problem is that i dont remember some stuffs in the 2.3.2, so i thin it is only 2.3.3 that came with the xperia play whe i buy it...
Already solved the problem.
You can only root devices from 2.3.2 down...
The strange is that I tthink may xperia play came with 2.3.4 and I rooted it before it bricks in boot loop...

you can root 2.3.4 until version 58 (enhanced v3) with locked bootloader. just flash the ftf, boot, enable usb-debugging and mass storage device (instead of mtp at usb-connection) and root it via flashtool.
otherwise unlock your bootloader and install a superuser application in any rom you want. flash the latest firmware (.79), flash custom kernel, install supersu or superuser via cwm and you got the newest firmware rooted.

@akandi
1) First go unlock your Bootloader Here ( Official Sony Website )
2) Download the Latest SuperSU Zip File
3) Download any Custom Kernel ( For Lollipop Of Course ) found in the Android Development Section, or you can use the boot.img kernel found in any CM 12 Rom
4) Flash the kernel on your Z1 Compact via Flashtool and enter recovery and flash the Latest SuperSU Zip File.
5) DO NOT REBOOT! Power Down and open Flashtool
6) Select the .270 FW and Uncheck All Except Kernel and FOTA ( Uncheck Final Verification ) here we reflash the stock kernel since using the CM kernel on Stock ROM would cause a bootloop
7) Flash and reboot
or
Install Kingroot on your Computer, root your phone and once your phone receives root access install NUT's Dual Recovery, after which uninstall the Kingroot Superuser app and use SuperSU instead since its less buggy and more stable.
With the first method, once your bootloader is unlocked it is very easy to root your device even when Sony updates it. Personally I used the first method to root my phone
Does the second method unlock my bootloader?
