Roaming Control vs. Roam Control - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I was just curious what the difference was between these 2 apps and if someone had tried both, which they thought was better and why. What are key differences in the features and options?

Wow I never even noticed that lol. Roaming Control has a trial though, I might check that out.

Roam control lets you manually pick whether or not you want your phone to roam at any moment in time (Switch from sprint to roaming at free will)
Roaming control lets you choose what connections are allowed (phone, data, etc) when your phone automatically roams on its own. (no choice what connection your phone picks up - just what services to allow it to use once it connects)

I ended up buying roam control also. I'm headed to the cabin this weekend and we have crap for sprint service there. I'm willing to give it a try, if it doesn't help I always have the 7 day window to refund it.

I'd highly recommend Roam Control. As has been stated, you can force roam on Verizon whenever you desire. I used to use it in class many times where I had zero Sprint coverage. Just be careful with roaming usage.

Roaming Control does not work on lollipop.

[Q] Roaming only

Anybody knows how to set phone to Roaming only preferably on stock ROM?
Download and install the Roam Control app from the market. When you start the app, select HTC as your manufacturer and then select "Roam Only". After a few seconds, you will notice the roaming triangle in the notification panel.

Thank you, will give itr a shot.
Since I started this thread,I have 1 more question:If I switch to Roam only for few wekks, will they terminate my contract?I have simply everything plan.
The reason Im asking is I want them to terminate me lol
I'm not sure. I only use it for making calls from my house where voice reception sucks. Away from home, I'm good to go and I don't use it for data purposes.

I roamed for months when the place I used to work was out of the service area, but only for voice calls. I think you can go a lot longer before getting booted with just voice. Using vzw data profiles and tethering all the time will probably get you booted a lot faster.
no vin! you make my roms! don't leave us!
I think I read somewhere that you have to have over 75% of your monthly use on Roam before they cancel you. But I think you need to have alot of min. of roam that month. I don't think they will cancel you if you only use 10 min and 8 are roaming.

[HOW-TO] Get a Data Signal While Roaming

Background:
Ever since I've had this phone I couldn't get a data signal while roaming in areas where I knew one was available. Old phones would get data while roaming without a problem.
The Epic Touch would just give a notification saying "you have lost data connectivity" or something.
I understand certain Sprint roaming areas just plain don't have data available. This howto can not fix that.
What this howto does help you do is get a data signal while roaming in areas where a roaming data signal is available.
Credit:
This was apparently discovered by someone on the sprint forums, and I found a reference to it on the Android Central forums, so I do not know who credit goes to for discovering this.
What to Do:
It's best if you are in a roaming-only area to test this, or if you can force roaming. You'll also need to be on the stock kernel (rooted is fine) so you have the ability to update your Profile.
Let's do that now. Go to the Settings menu and tap About Phone - system updates - update profile and wait for it to complete, then tap ok.
From the home screen, tap Menu - Settings - Wireless and Networks - Roaming - Roaming Settings.
Un-check all options here (voice and data for both domestic and international)
With no boxes checked, tap the "Data" box under domestic roaming. Tap only this one, not voice.
You will get a box asking you to confirm. Click yes. This will then automatically enable voice as well.
Another pop up with a red box will ask if you really want to use data while roaming. At this point you can tell it to never ask again and click Roam.
Now you can use data while roaming where it's available!
Update:
after trying this multiple times to verify it works, occasionally the final pop-up with the red box disappears before you can read it. I was able to long press the home button to show recent apps, then tap the "Data Roaming Guard" app. Then I could tap Roam.
This is critical for me as sometimes I am in roaming areas for work and I need internet and this phone is the only access I have. Now I can use it!
Report back with any corrections or feedback. Mileage may vary.
I don't know if it's necessary to update the profile. I have that step in there because that is the sequence I used. If you try it without updating the profile, let me know. This would allow people on a custom kernel to do this too.
I spent an hour and a half with Sprint yesterday on the phone trying to resolve this. They turned me over to new reps three times (including to the international support department) each one not aware of my issue so I'd have to explain everything again.
Finally I started digging on the web and found the tip on AC. Took me 2 minutes.
DOH! Stupid Tapatalk.
Mods, please move to General. Didn't mean to start this in development.
Thanks for sharing this. I will try this out.

I have the same issues. My girlfriend has an EVO and she will have data while roaming, and I wont. Even if were right next to each other.
Thanks, this worked great for me & did not have to update profile. I am on stock rooted deodexed rom.
Worked for me! Thanks, that was very annoying!
thanks! now i can play wwf at work lol
I did this awhile back when I saw it on the AC forums. I also read this phone cannot roam on PCS networks because of a limitation in the radio so there still may be times it won't roam when other phones will.
Greetings All!
I was able to make roaming calls before; but I followed these instructions and now I can use roaming data as well. Fortunately Atlanta is a pretty good 4G metro area so I rarely need to use roaming data. Usually either 3G or 4G is available. Nonetheless it's nice to have the option.
FYI I forced roaming by using the Roam Control app and have verified that for the first time with this phone I have a nonzero "Sprint 3G Data Roaming" entry in the detailed usage screen on the Sprint website.
Many thanks!
Cheers, Henri
Ok, glad this is working for people! I know it was the biggest gripe I had about the phone by far.

Agreed. And such a simple solution. Thanks again.

Mobile Network Settings

Can anyone point me to the files that control the Mobile Network Settings > System Select options? I want to see about moving the ones from CM9 over to AOKP because I can't get them to stick after selecting Auto: Domestic Roaming. I need the ability to roam especially at home where I get horrible Sprint reception and need to roam to get less crappy Verizon reception. Without the ability to roam I end up with the little x over my bars and no service. I don't know if it is possible to do but I thought I would try, I just need a little help pointing me in the right direction to know what files to mess with. Thanks in advance.
Just for good measure I am using CM9 Alpha 6 and want to fix the issue with Chris41g's AOKP ROM. That ROM with his kernal is giving me amazing battery life.

Roam Control or Force Roaming?

I downloaded the roam control trail and it does not work for me. I was wondering is there a way around it or a rom that I can use to control my roam?
I have sprint and I am losing bars and reception in my own home and work place. I understand I can use a airwave, but I do not care for sprint having access to my internet. Work its impossible since its work... verizon is very strong in the area. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I too am having service latency and I installed roam control and when activate, screen is bland until the application closes unexpectedly. I am on PA rom and that may be a reason but I am looking for a force roam solution that works on the Sprint G2
Anyone? Having more and more spotty service. Would like his also. Will keep looking. Hopefully find something.

[Q] Can't kill off Roaming Guard

I've set all options in Roaming Guard off including the guard itself and domestic voice/data roaming. Yet I still get Roaming Guard popping up all over town in random places. So sick of it. You can even press the button to not show the message again and press OK or Cancel and it still keeps popping up Roaming Guard.
Current options (have tried many permutations)
Roaming Network: Automatic
Roaming guard: all options off
Domestic Voice/Data roaming ON
International Voice/Data OFF
Network mode:CDMA only - doesn't matter where you set this, it always goes back to CDMA only on my phone
Connections Optimizer: OFF
APNs: APN2 LTE Internet (not editable it doesn't seem)
So does anyone have any combination of settings that will cause this Roaming Guard message to pop up?
I drive sometimes for Uber/Lyft in addition to my day job and I can't be having this pop up when I am trying to make money.
When I initially switched to Sprint I had an LG G4 but I sent that back for the Note4 because my wife had one and I liked all the features. Kind of regretting that now. The LG G4 was rock solid on signal, unlike this phone. In fact there's a lot of flaky features on this phone. Samsung should really focus on their own software builds as a prime reason their sales are down. There's just way too many bugs.
Too late to send it back again now though. It would be great if it wasn't so flaky. I use the S Pen all the time to take notes in meetings and I use the fingerprint scanner, another "feature" with a lot of bugs....

I have all Roaming in off position, roaming guard all on, and have it set to home network. Do in that order you will be gd. Just tested myself waited for popup for roaming and all is gd.
No, have same problem. Every time I drive into the same area it pops. It even popped with roaming data off.
More importantly, it is continuing to pop even after the check box for "Do not show again" has been checked and OK has been clicked.
I have tried to get a message passed along through Sprint "Tech Support" to their Android Dev Team to have the software side looked at to be told that Sprint doesn't have one...
Of course those imaginary Dev Team personnel, that develop solutions for issues and then distribute the solution out to the individuals that work in the call centers and at the stores
("technicians" who have no knowledge of software or hardware and only have 1 solution, "send it in and pay the deductible") can implement those solutions, don't exist.

Yeah I forgot to mention the store "technicians". The guy that "helped" me looked like some zombie that just got out of his mom's basement. Of course the phone flashed up the Roaming Guard again about 2 minutes after driving away from the store. I'd rather just be told there is not a fix rather than just have some questionably competent store flunkie make up some random story about settings that work.
Looks like the best we can do is choose the most polished ROM out there from the development section. I'm reading threads to learn more about the particulars of this phone.
This started happening to me as well over the past few weeks. Not sure if it coincided with me flashing OK1, but definitely never had this problem before then. Weird
What are you guys on? I'm on rooted stock OK1 (system based root) with AEL Kernel 8.4
I am on OK1.
Had this problem before too. Everytime I get in a elevator and lose connection the popup comes.....a hard reset cleared it up for me

Having same issue. I'm on rooted stock ok1.
