[Q] Roaming only - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anybody knows how to set phone to Roaming only preferably on stock ROM?

Download and install the Roam Control app from the market. When you start the app, select HTC as your manufacturer and then select "Roam Only". After a few seconds, you will notice the roaming triangle in the notification panel.

Thank you, will give itr a shot.
Since I started this thread,I have 1 more question:If I switch to Roam only for few wekks, will they terminate my contract?I have simply everything plan.
The reason Im asking is I want them to terminate me lol

I'm not sure. I only use it for making calls from my house where voice reception sucks. Away from home, I'm good to go and I don't use it for data purposes.
posting & replying via the XDA Premium app.

I roamed for months when the place I used to work was out of the service area, but only for voice calls. I think you can go a lot longer before getting booted with just voice. Using vzw data profiles and tethering all the time will probably get you booted a lot faster.

no vin! you make my roms! don't leave us!

I think I read somewhere that you have to have over 75% of your monthly use on Roam before they cancel you. But I think you need to have alot of min. of roam that month. I don't think they will cancel you if you only use 10 min and 8 are roaming.

Data Connection

I seem to be having some problem with my HSDPA connection on my desire. I'm wih Three UK and I can't tell is it is my network on the phone.
What happened is for some reason it just wont work anywhere I go. For the first few weeks its worked fine and then towards the end of last month they sent me texts saying they would cut my internet off if I carry on using it but I can't see that having anything to do with it as it is a new month.
The phone is rooted and I've flash the new DeFrOsT Rom (2.0a) and it started working again but then when I logged into the Facebook app it stopped working and went to R (also the wholetime I'm connected to a wifi and when I disconnect from wifi I still get the no connection).
I tried uninstalling Facebook and logging out and no luck
I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this or it is happening to them or you know a fix.
I also attached some screenshots of the message I get, I can't actually read the full message as it cuts it off and then when you select it, it just takes you to the homepage.
the R is for roaming
how is the signal strength where you're located?
go into settings -> wireless and networks ->
tell me what roaming settings you have enabled
untick the box to allow data roaming
data roaming will take place when the signal strength is very low and you are therefore using other carrier's networks (this might also incur high data costs!)
Data roaming is disabled and the signal in my area is usually quite good. Also when I go into a city around here or anywhere nothing changes it still sticks on R.
Plus before I started to flash it with roms and rooted it, it would nearly always have HSDPA connection.
so although data roaming is disabled your phone is roaming...
can i ask why it is that 3 told you that they will disable your internet? this seems to be the main problem...
have you tried flashing a different radio?
this will definitely have some change
They sent a text I was reaching/reached my data allowance for the month (so called unlimited =/)
And yeah I've just flashed the new radio that is needed for defrost 2.0a however it did happen before I flashed it.
For some reason it has got proper signal and HSDPA for the time being and as far as I know I did nothing to make it any better.
Got a feeling it will go again but I'll keep you updated.
I'll have to ring three up tomorrow if I can't get it sorted as I'm going on holiday and I'll be screwed with out it,
sounds to me like you have a data cap where if you exceed a certain limit your internet is stopped.
the fact that you are in roaming makes me think that it is a trick so that 3 can charge you large amounts so be careful.
glad the radio update worked for you
let us know if the problem persists
although there's not much we can do unless we know it's been sorted with your provider.
Thanks for the help.
The thing I don't get is the roaming bit as when it says I'm roaming I can make calls and text fine and there is no charge or anything on my bill it just uses normal minutes
honestly it sounds to me like a problem with your provider
does it still say roaming with the new radio?
if it does then phone your provider because they can charge you a large amount for roaming
Three only run a 3G network in the UK. To provide coverage and data connectivity (mainly EDGE) in the areas between their masts they partner with Orange. Your Desire will roam onto the Orange (and possibly now T-Mobile since they merged on Monday) network when it has a weak or no 3G signal. To allow data in these circumstances you must have data when roaming enabled.
There is no additional charge for 3 customers to use data roaming while in the UK. It is part of your monthly bundle. However, please remember to turn data roaming back off when you travel abroad or it'll cost you a fortune!

+1 for the above, roaming is all well and good but of you leave it on when your on holiday youll definately remember it!

Thanks I didn't realise I could use data roaming as when I clicked to enable it it said I may be charged so I didn't bother but now I will as I wont get charged
I was just about to say that the original problem had gone but it's decided to happen again just as I tried to log into ebay and download something from the market. However I think it has started to use data roaming as there is now an R in the signal box but a G next to it where the H would be.
Think I'll be ringing them up today

"Surest" way to disable data while in another country?

I'm going to be travelling to Canada, and as such I don't want to incur charges. How can I put my phone into a mode where no programs will invoke data services? I would still like to be able to use wifi, so I don't want to use airplane mode. Would the mobile network toggle widget would prevent data from being activated?
Thanks!!
hmm, I thought we got free data roaming with our plans (as evo owners). I am checking to see if this is different in Canada...
Yes its different in Canada, roaming only in the US, and not just for evo owners for all sprint customers.
Uncheck mobile data in wireless and networks works just fine, if thats to scary for you try the app droidwall from the market. that was from before data plans were required but i think its been updated.
The settings shortcut widget thing for MOBILE will do the same thing as unchecking the box.

From what I understand, we can roam in the US for free but once we get into Canada it becomes like $.0002 / KB. So that's $2 for a Gigabyte. Um ok maybe that's not so bad after all? Is my math right? Lol
Yeah just disable the Mobile Network. Cuts all data from receiving/sending unless you are on Wifi which of course would not be roaming or anything like that.
I just got back form Mexico and just left it in airplane mode for the week. I was able to switch wifi on and off while in airplane mode. With Google Voice, you are able to listen to all of your voicemails through wifi, its really nice.

Airplane mode, or go into Settings>Wireless and uncheck Mobile Network. Don't know the roaming data rates, but $2/GB is impossible. More likely $20-$200/GB. Probably ditto for texting.
I'd recommend heading down to your nearest corporate Sprint store (Meaning a SPRINT store, not a Sprint booth, or BestBuy, or RadioShack, or anything like that) and ask them. The one by me has been extremely knowledgeable and they're always up-to-date, more-so than anywhere else.

There's an option in one of the phone codes that disables the data

[HOW-TO] Get a Data Signal While Roaming

Background:
Ever since I've had this phone I couldn't get a data signal while roaming in areas where I knew one was available. Old phones would get data while roaming without a problem.
The Epic Touch would just give a notification saying "you have lost data connectivity" or something.
I understand certain Sprint roaming areas just plain don't have data available. This howto can not fix that.
What this howto does help you do is get a data signal while roaming in areas where a roaming data signal is available.
Credit:
This was apparently discovered by someone on the sprint forums, and I found a reference to it on the Android Central forums, so I do not know who credit goes to for discovering this.
What to Do:
It's best if you are in a roaming-only area to test this, or if you can force roaming. You'll also need to be on the stock kernel (rooted is fine) so you have the ability to update your Profile.
Let's do that now. Go to the Settings menu and tap About Phone - system updates - update profile and wait for it to complete, then tap ok.
From the home screen, tap Menu - Settings - Wireless and Networks - Roaming - Roaming Settings.
Un-check all options here (voice and data for both domestic and international)
With no boxes checked, tap the "Data" box under domestic roaming. Tap only this one, not voice.
You will get a box asking you to confirm. Click yes. This will then automatically enable voice as well.
Another pop up with a red box will ask if you really want to use data while roaming. At this point you can tell it to never ask again and click Roam.
Now you can use data while roaming where it's available!
Update:
after trying this multiple times to verify it works, occasionally the final pop-up with the red box disappears before you can read it. I was able to long press the home button to show recent apps, then tap the "Data Roaming Guard" app. Then I could tap Roam.
This is critical for me as sometimes I am in roaming areas for work and I need internet and this phone is the only access I have. Now I can use it!
Report back with any corrections or feedback. Mileage may vary.
I don't know if it's necessary to update the profile. I have that step in there because that is the sequence I used. If you try it without updating the profile, let me know. This would allow people on a custom kernel to do this too.
I spent an hour and a half with Sprint yesterday on the phone trying to resolve this. They turned me over to new reps three times (including to the international support department) each one not aware of my issue so I'd have to explain everything again.
Finally I started digging on the web and found the tip on AC. Took me 2 minutes.
DOH! Stupid Tapatalk.
Mods, please move to General. Didn't mean to start this in development.
Thanks for sharing this. I will try this out.

I have the same issues. My girlfriend has an EVO and she will have data while roaming, and I wont. Even if were right next to each other.
Thanks, this worked great for me & did not have to update profile. I am on stock rooted deodexed rom.
Worked for me! Thanks, that was very annoying!
thanks! now i can play wwf at work lol
I did this awhile back when I saw it on the AC forums. I also read this phone cannot roam on PCS networks because of a limitation in the radio so there still may be times it won't roam when other phones will.
Greetings All!
I was able to make roaming calls before; but I followed these instructions and now I can use roaming data as well. Fortunately Atlanta is a pretty good 4G metro area so I rarely need to use roaming data. Usually either 3G or 4G is available. Nonetheless it's nice to have the option.
FYI I forced roaming by using the Roam Control app and have verified that for the first time with this phone I have a nonzero "Sprint 3G Data Roaming" entry in the detailed usage screen on the Sprint website.
Many thanks!
Cheers, Henri
Ok, glad this is working for people! I know it was the biggest gripe I had about the phone by far.

Agreed. And such a simple solution. Thanks again.

Can you text over wifi instead of sprint network????

Sometimes at home can't get damn 3g signal. So I got wifi how do I send messages using wifi???? ****'s very annoying.
Text is a voice service it doesn't use data at all. If you can't text making/receiving phone calls must be hard at your home as well. Over wifi Google voice or a similar app from the play store would be your best bet
Yes, you can. The best way to do it would be Google Voice, but there are other apps out there capable of it. The way the carriers handle it (in this case Sprint) is over the network... GSM or CDMA. 3g is always an extension of the mobile voice network... this is why you typically cannot make calls and browse the web while on 3g (although Sprint has found a way to defeat this with the Viper and the Evo LTE, though a second chipset). 4g runs on a different band than 3g does, which means it doesn't affect your calling / text capabilities.
I know that is more info than you asked for. The long and short of it is that you need an app designed to run on Wifi, rather than mobile data, but it is possible.
+1 for google voice. I even use it to text from my Nook which doesn't even have 3g.

Uh, slvrap1 already stated this in so many words above. We're discussing workarounds now. And yes, Google Voice is the easiest way to go if you're using an Android phone.
A lot of the information in this thread is wrong...
SMS is actually a function over 1xRTT (just like voice calls) not EVDO (3g)... This is why you can recieve sms messages while on a phone call but not get other data services at the same time...
You never make a phone call or transmit SMS messages over EVDO, it is a data only connection protocol..
This is why SMS are limited to a certain number of characters, because they are actually a hack of the control channel in 1xRTT communications...
Simplified version:
REAL SMS is a hack of the control channel between cell phone and tower. It has nothing to do with a data connection so it can not be transmitted via EVDO, WIFI or any other data connection...
Note: When I state REAL SMS that is because services like google voice and others are all VOIP connections that use data connections to transmit messages and phone conversations... There is character limit in VOIP texting but they impose it because you can send it to a REAL SMS and that has character limitations built in..

Correct. Texting has nothing to do with 3g. You can find an app that can use 3g or wifi to text o stead of the network. This is what my friend uses on AT&T so they don't have to pay for text messages. They use the network.

That actually just sends the message via the data connection to a server, which then relays that into the carrier's system and is then transmitted to the recievers phone via the 1xRTT control channel... They aren't actually texting a phone, they are sending an instant message to a server that then knows how to convert and relay that into a text message.
Note: I use 1xRTT because we are on a CDMA2000 system... for AT&T, T-Mobile and other GSM it works on their *2g* voice connection... I forgot what it is called at this moment...
Use roam control at home, Verizon probably covers you better. 1x roaming is free other than your minutes

Well let me say this. I was at a music festival in March. Had some signal bars but could not make calls or texts. Incoming or outgoing.
When I was in a certain stage I tried again (text) they all failed. I tried to turn on wifi and found an open network! Tried to text. Success!
So in my experience I say yes! Anywhere else I could not text. So when I needed to text I would return to that stage and connect to wifi.

Well if you are connected to WiMAX or Wifi.. yes you can make a phone call and surf the web at the same time.. If you are on EVDO, the only way that is possible is if you have 2 cell phones... One to surf the web and one to make calls

Your experience is only coincidental... It is physically impossible because the SMS system is built on the 1xRTT control channel... It has nothing to do with the data connection in any way shape or form... It is a hack on the tower identification and protocol transmission channel.
It is like if you take out a frozen piece of meat, turn on the microwave and leave the piece of meat outside the microwave (never put it in the microwave) and claim the microwave is defrosting the meat...

Are you reading? He obviously cant text at home.. he did say 3g but probably doesnt know what HES talking about.. i think its safe to say hes getting NO signal since he is unable to send text messages.. thus want other options to send text messages which people are giving.. he doesnt care how the network works and how it uses 1xrtt and not his 3g radio.. he just wants optiong to improve him sending messages at home which no matter how we put it, theres only a few options we've already determine which is 1: google voice or other voip messaging app. 2: using roam control to make sure he has signal to send it regularly while roaming. 3: can get airrave and hook up to his wifi at home to bost his signal inside of the house. 4: leave his house and go walk around til he can send one lol 5: someone said theres apps which allow you to send it over data which then gets converted in the tower and sent as normal.. good luck OP! Google voice will only allow you to text over your google voice phone number... If you use google voice to manage your SMS and text using your phone number, it will still send it via SMS (1xRTT control channel) and will fail There is no alternative when you want to use your actual phone number except for utilizing the sprint web tool.. log into your account and send a text message from the web tool.\
Note: I am one of those people that will correct wrong information if i see it, even if it doesn't 100% pertain to the original post. IMHO it is the only way to ensure people don't start repeating the wrong information and exponentially make it harder to teach people the correct answer.

Roaming Issues: Upgraded from Evo 4g to Galaxy S3

I just upgraded from the Evo 4g (good bye old friend) to the Galaxy S3. I've already noticed significant decreases in coverage which I understand is to be expected until all towers have been upgraded appropriately. The main problem I've been noticing is that when I go into roaming (which is covered on my plan) I lose voice. If I'm on the phone it disconnects me and if I try to make a call I get a "busy tone" or an automated message about making a collect call. I assume that's because I'm not provision properly to make calls on networks other than Sprint? Every time I call technical support, they think a simple reprogram will fix it, but it hasn't yet. Does anyone have experience with this, so that when I call them I can "suggest" what they may need to do in order to fix it?
Tell them that the reprogram didn't work
Also mention calling them a few times
There is also the can u talk to a superior/supervisor card (usable multiple times per call) and then there is the I'm returninf this phone and leaving Sprint last resort bluff card

I literally tried all those options. Spoke with a supervisor and he still sounded like he had no clue. They said I will need to take my phone in to a tech to check it out. I doubt it's the phone though. It happens when I go into roaming, so it sounds to me like there's something wrong with the way they set up my s3. The nearest tech is 30+ min away and I'd love to avoid making that trip.
As of now, I am still getting the roaming message. It says "If you'd like to make a collect call press 1...." Has anyone ever gotten this message while roaming?
I have gotten this message when I dial out using various PRL's. Try updating your PRL. Maybe there are no roaming agreements in your area? Check your settings?

I've never had this problem on the Evo 4g. Would it have something to do with the fact that the GS3 doesn't search for the same towers as the Evo 4g and other older smartphones? I'm currently on 25010. How can I check if there are no roaming agreements in my area and wouldn't those have affected my Evo as well?

I am on CM 10.1 Nightlies right now. Although, I've had the problem on stock as well. I've looked for comparable settings in CM, but don't see anything about Roaming Guard. Do I need to revert back to stock to ensure these are configured properly? Last I checked...everything had a check mark next to it. What does roaming guard do exactly anyway? Just prevent me from roaming?

Try this if you like:
1) Nand backup,
2) Flash tw rom,
3) Settings/System update/Update profile,
4) Settings/System update/Update PRL,
5) Go to Settings/More settings/Roaming,
6) Set Roaming network to Auto,
7)Set Roaming settings to roam on domestic voice and data (on),
8) Set Roaming guard to off for domestic voice and data.
Now go to a place where you don't have any Sprint signal but think that there should be a roaming network signal.
If roaming doesn't work, it's likely that something is wrong with provisioning.
If it does, then restore nand backup and try in CM10.
And I don't really know what Roaming guard does, but I think it asks you for a confirmation before switching to a roaming network.
Reverted to stock and flipped off the roaming guard. Then restored my cm 10.1. I can finally make calls while roaming! Thanks for your help.
