"Surest" way to disable data while in another country? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm going to be travelling to Canada, and as such I don't want to incur charges. How can I put my phone into a mode where no programs will invoke data services? I would still like to be able to use wifi, so I don't want to use airplane mode. Would the mobile network toggle widget would prevent data from being activated?
Thanks!!

hmm, I thought we got free data roaming with our plans (as evo owners). I am checking to see if this is different in Canada...

Yes its different in Canada, roaming only in the US, and not just for evo owners for all sprint customers.
Uncheck mobile data in wireless and networks works just fine, if thats to scary for you try the app droidwall from the market. that was from before data plans were required but i think its been updated.

The settings shortcut widget thing for MOBILE will do the same thing as unchecking the box.

From what I understand, we can roam in the US for free but once we get into Canada it becomes like $.0002 / KB. So that's $2 for a Gigabyte. Um ok maybe that's not so bad after all? Is my math right? Lol

Yeah just disable the Mobile Network. Cuts all data from receiving/sending unless you are on Wifi which of course would not be roaming or anything like that.

I just got back form Mexico and just left it in airplane mode for the week. I was able to switch wifi on and off while in airplane mode. With Google Voice, you are able to listen to all of your voicemails through wifi, its really nice.

Thanks that's great to know

Airplane mode, or go into Settings>Wireless and uncheck Mobile Network. Don't know the roaming data rates, but $2/GB is impossible. More likely $20-$200/GB. Probably ditto for texting.
I'd recommend heading down to your nearest corporate Sprint store (Meaning a SPRINT store, not a Sprint booth, or BestBuy, or RadioShack, or anything like that) and ask them. The one by me has been extremely knowledgeable and they're always up-to-date, more-so than anywhere else.

Yes, I was just gonna show that it was ~2000 per gigabyte...could be more if the .2¢ per kb was actually per kilobit

There's an option in one of the phone codes that disables the data

T-mobile Data Capped?

just noticed that when you log into the my t-mobile page and click 'review plan and services' there is an option saying Capped data rate, this is ticked. If i untick it will it speed up my internet?
Somehow that just seems far too easy to be true...
from t-mobile forum
The "Capped Data rate" is actually a service on the account that stops you being charged at anymore than £1 per day for web browsing. Even if you have Web'n'Walk booster on the account its added automatically.

i have the included 3gb flexible booster, so what if I untick the box? Will I get faster speeds or just charged more?

i wanted to try it but before confirmation it said that the service will be changed on 2/5 which is at the next bill. It said free. You might try giving TecH Support a call first.

Travelling Abroard with my Desire

Ooo er...that sounds like a raunchy novel title.
Going to Romania for a couple of months, and don't want to get a massive data roaming bill. Is it just a case of turning off Mobile Newtworks?
cheers
PS - I'm on UK Orange Network.
The phone disables roaming by default, you have no enable roaming to use data so there's no need to do anything
I thought roaming refers to using your phone abroad - as opposed to accessing data.
If I was you, to be on the safe side I'd delete my APN's. That way it cannot possibly use data. Not even if your tempted to just check emails for a minute

Yes you are right roaming do mean accessing other networks with the possibility of additional prices.
This is not disabled by default. Data roaming is though, so you should not bother about changing anything. I always turn the 3g off anyways, when going abroad just to be safe.

Simply turning 3g off will not stop data roaming. It will still connect to data but at 2g speeds. You need to disable data, but to be on the safe side deleting the APN's would ensure that no data connections can be made.

Wireless Tether (Sprint finds out?)

Basically how can Sprint find out if your wireless tethering for free. If you're rooted and using the free wireless tether app will going over a certain amount of data a day give them a alert. Thank you.

No Sprint will not be notified of going over a certain amount of data in a day, nor is there a cap for data usage when using the wireless tether app.
I just checked my 4G usage for this month since I started tethering on Sprint.com and it's at 17GB whereas before it was like 4-5GB. It's partially the tethering but it's also because I've been using the Watch ESPN app a lot this month. Is there any way that Sprint will kick me off? It's all Sprint data and not roaming since it's 4G. Obviously they can tell I'm using a ton of data but has anyone ever been kicked off for using too much data? How much data have other people used?

The only way that you are going to get kicked off for using too much data is if you are roaming when you use the data. And even then, more than half of your data usage would have to be while you are roaming. So, if your total monthly data usage is 4 gigs, and 2 1/2 of the gigs are used while roaming then you will most likely get a letter from sprint letting you know that they have terminated your account. This is commonly seen when a 00001 or other hacked PRL is loaded on your phone which causes you to constantly roam. But long answer short, you'll be fine...

Basically, when you tether you are sending your phones internet through wifi to your computer/device. Sprint only sees that you are using your internet on your phone, not where it is going. When you pay for the "tether service" from Sprint, there is a different way that you hook up to the internet. It is a separate service rather than just sharing your phone's internet connection with your computer/device.

Not exactly true. When you launch the unhacked Sprint Hotspot app it asks the Sprint Server if your phone is authorized to use the app. If you have not subscribed it errors out. The hacked app has the authorization check removed. When the hacked version launches it just shares the phone's internet connection with external devices. Sprint has no way of knowing that the internet traffic is going anywhere beyond the phone.

One thing they can see is the IPs of the pages you are going to, and different browsers make different page requests, like not pulling up the mobile versions of pages. (yes, I know this can be modified to pull up the nonmobile version.)
Not only is the tcp/ip page request header on an Android browser is completely different than say chrome/firefox/etc, but other applications use the same technique, like IM/BT/skype/etc.
If sprint really GAF, they could very easily see that you're tethering, from what I know.

Then, tether up, try it again, it will still show the same.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but Sprint doesn't know. What another user mentioned above is partially true, they can find out if you are excessively roaming. That will notify them, then they can investigate further and find which websites you're visiting etc. Then they will begin sending you letters.
my 2 cents. :good:
Yes Sprint can tell you tether
Ive been getting a text msg from Sprint, notifying me of doing something that isnt in my plan, they claimed I was "tethering" and setting up a "mobile hotspot" well I was sometimes, and btw I use xbox for LTE, so when they see alot of data being used like that, they will investigate, ive been with sprint for 10 years. That doesnt matter to them as they threatened to cut off my service, so I asked if they had any unlimited tethering/mobile hotspot and all they have is 6gb/month for $50 which is useless. so apparently they said I was going to Weather.com and NOAA website to much lol they couldnt even see that I had an Xbox One on LTE for past 2 months, and then you get an arab or some mexican that can barely speak english that doesnt know anything about phones/mobile development trying to tell you that you are tethering, the person I spoke with literally had to lookup the definition it was pathetic, sprint is going downhill as soon as I find another carrier with unlimited im flying to theyre store.

[Q] E4GT & International Travel

Is there a way to keep the E4GT on Internationally without worrying about coming home to a big Sprint bill?
I'm going out of the country for the first time and want to keep my phone on for the alarm clock function but want to prevent any data from being used (e.g.: apps using the 4G/3G signal in the background) that I could be billed for. Are there any settings I should be aware of besides turning off options related to roaming (settings>wireless & network>roaming)?
Also, to prevent apps from running in the background, how do you stop them from running? Do you force close them manually in Applications (not sure if they'll boot themselves back up after a certain time automatically)? Or could I just turn on Airplane mode and stop all Internet functions?
Any advice from seasoned travelers would be appreciated, thanks!

You can just leave it on. The odds that you are going to have any cdma service to roam on internationally, to even receive data charges are slim to none. I was just in Chile and had absolutely no service at all. None in Panama either.

No. I was on a business trip. But in Bermuda you might have a chance of a signal. Your best bet is to call Sprint and see. Or airplane mode it. Just remember to set the time to compensate for the time difference if any, I'd you're going to use your alarm clock.

You can do airplane mode or just go in to settings and turn off just the 3G data and set your voice roaming to "Sprint Only". 4G would obviously not work outside the US so no worries there. The above will still let you access wifi where airplane mode will turn all radios off.

I figured as much, just checked a map and noticed how close it is from the States. As prior answers go, I guess the safest choice is to Airplane mode it.

Roaming Issues: Upgraded from Evo 4g to Galaxy S3

I just upgraded from the Evo 4g (good bye old friend) to the Galaxy S3. I've already noticed significant decreases in coverage which I understand is to be expected until all towers have been upgraded appropriately. The main problem I've been noticing is that when I go into roaming (which is covered on my plan) I lose voice. If I'm on the phone it disconnects me and if I try to make a call I get a "busy tone" or an automated message about making a collect call. I assume that's because I'm not provision properly to make calls on networks other than Sprint? Every time I call technical support, they think a simple reprogram will fix it, but it hasn't yet. Does anyone have experience with this, so that when I call them I can "suggest" what they may need to do in order to fix it?
Tell them that the reprogram didn't work
Also mention calling them a few times
There is also the can u talk to a superior/supervisor card (usable multiple times per call) and then there is the I'm returninf this phone and leaving Sprint last resort bluff card

I literally tried all those options. Spoke with a supervisor and he still sounded like he had no clue. They said I will need to take my phone in to a tech to check it out. I doubt it's the phone though. It happens when I go into roaming, so it sounds to me like there's something wrong with the way they set up my s3. The nearest tech is 30+ min away and I'd love to avoid making that trip.
As of now, I am still getting the roaming message. It says "If you'd like to make a collect call press 1...." Has anyone ever gotten this message while roaming?
I have gotten this message when I dial out using various PRL's. Try updating your PRL. Maybe there are no roaming agreements in your area? Check your settings?

I've never had this problem on the Evo 4g. Would it have something to do with the fact that the GS3 doesn't search for the same towers as the Evo 4g and other older smartphones? I'm currently on 25010. How can I check if there are no roaming agreements in my area and wouldn't those have affected my Evo as well?

I am on CM 10.1 Nightlies right now. Although, I've had the problem on stock as well. I've looked for comparable settings in CM, but don't see anything about Roaming Guard. Do I need to revert back to stock to ensure these are configured properly? Last I checked...everything had a check mark next to it. What does roaming guard do exactly anyway? Just prevent me from roaming?

Try this if you like:
1) Nand backup,
2) Flash tw rom,
3) Settings/System update/Update profile,
4) Settings/System update/Update PRL,
5) Go to Settings/More settings/Roaming,
6) Set Roaming network to Auto,
7)Set Roaming settings to roam on domestic voice and data (on),
8) Set Roaming guard to off for domestic voice and data.
Now go to a place where you don't have any Sprint signal but think that there should be a roaming network signal.
If roaming doesn't work, it's likely that something is wrong with provisioning.
If it does, then restore nand backup and try in CM10.
And I don't really know what Roaming guard does, but I think it asks you for a confirmation before switching to a roaming network.
Reverted to stock and flipped off the roaming guard. Then restored my cm 10.1. I can finally make calls while roaming! Thanks for your help.
