Travelling Abroard with my Desire - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ooo er...that sounds like a raunchy novel title.
Going to Romania for a couple of months, and don't want to get a massive data roaming bill. Is it just a case of turning off Mobile Newtworks?
cheers
PS - I'm on UK Orange Network.

The phone disables roaming by default, you have no enable roaming to use data so there's no need to do anything

I thought roaming refers to using your phone abroad - as opposed to accessing data.

If I was you, to be on the safe side I'd delete my APN's. That way it cannot possibly use data. Not even if your tempted to just check emails for a minute

Yes you are right roaming do mean accessing other networks with the possibility of additional prices.
This is not disabled by default. Data roaming is though, so you should not bother about changing anything. I always turn the 3g off anyways, when going abroad just to be safe.

Simply turning 3g off will not stop data roaming. It will still connect to data but at 2g speeds. You need to disable data, but to be on the safe side deleting the APN's would ensure that no data connections can be made.

Data Connection

I seem to be having some problem with my HSDPA connection on my desire. I'm wih Three UK and I can't tell is it is my network on the phone.
What happened is for some reason it just wont work anywhere I go. For the first few weeks its worked fine and then towards the end of last month they sent me texts saying they would cut my internet off if I carry on using it but I can't see that having anything to do with it as it is a new month.
The phone is rooted and I've flash the new DeFrOsT Rom (2.0a) and it started working again but then when I logged into the Facebook app it stopped working and went to R (also the wholetime I'm connected to a wifi and when I disconnect from wifi I still get the no connection).
I tried uninstalling Facebook and logging out and no luck
I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this or it is happening to them or you know a fix.
I also attached some screenshots of the message I get, I can't actually read the full message as it cuts it off and then when you select it, it just takes you to the homepage.
the R is for roaming
how is the signal strength where you're located?
go into settings -> wireless and networks ->
tell me what roaming settings you have enabled
untick the box to allow data roaming
data roaming will take place when the signal strength is very low and you are therefore using other carrier's networks (this might also incur high data costs!)
Data roaming is disabled and the signal in my area is usually quite good. Also when I go into a city around here or anywhere nothing changes it still sticks on R.
Plus before I started to flash it with roms and rooted it, it would nearly always have HSDPA connection.
so although data roaming is disabled your phone is roaming...
can i ask why it is that 3 told you that they will disable your internet? this seems to be the main problem...
have you tried flashing a different radio?
this will definitely have some change
They sent a text I was reaching/reached my data allowance for the month (so called unlimited =/)
And yeah I've just flashed the new radio that is needed for defrost 2.0a however it did happen before I flashed it.
For some reason it has got proper signal and HSDPA for the time being and as far as I know I did nothing to make it any better.
Got a feeling it will go again but I'll keep you updated.
I'll have to ring three up tomorrow if I can't get it sorted as I'm going on holiday and I'll be screwed with out it,
sounds to me like you have a data cap where if you exceed a certain limit your internet is stopped.
the fact that you are in roaming makes me think that it is a trick so that 3 can charge you large amounts so be careful.
glad the radio update worked for you
let us know if the problem persists
although there's not much we can do unless we know it's been sorted with your provider.
Thanks for the help.
The thing I don't get is the roaming bit as when it says I'm roaming I can make calls and text fine and there is no charge or anything on my bill it just uses normal minutes
honestly it sounds to me like a problem with your provider
does it still say roaming with the new radio?
if it does then phone your provider because they can charge you a large amount for roaming
Three only run a 3G network in the UK. To provide coverage and data connectivity (mainly EDGE) in the areas between their masts they partner with Orange. Your Desire will roam onto the Orange (and possibly now T-Mobile since they merged on Monday) network when it has a weak or no 3G signal. To allow data in these circumstances you must have data when roaming enabled.
There is no additional charge for 3 customers to use data roaming while in the UK. It is part of your monthly bundle. However, please remember to turn data roaming back off when you travel abroad or it'll cost you a fortune!

+1 for the above, roaming is all well and good but of you leave it on when your on holiday youll definately remember it!

Thanks I didn't realise I could use data roaming as when I clicked to enable it it said I may be charged so I didn't bother but now I will as I wont get charged
I was just about to say that the original problem had gone but it's decided to happen again just as I tried to log into ebay and download something from the market. However I think it has started to use data roaming as there is now an R in the signal box but a G next to it where the H would be.
Think I'll be ringing them up today

[Q] Can someone explain data roaming to me (specifically CM's roaming options)?

I am a bit confused as to what constitutes roaming with Sprint. As far as I can tell, the only way to tell what network I am on is the little network indicator on the notification bar. I have a few questions, and I apologize if they are stupid ones. I tried searching for the answers, but have come up short.
Is there ever any time where my network indicator will read 3G and I will be roaming?
Am I always roaming whenever it says 1X?
I hear people mention EVDO, is that the same thing as 1X? If not, is EVDO considered roaming or not?
Also, I have a couple of questions about the roaming options on CyanogenMod. If I change my network to "Affiliated Networks," I am unable to get data transfers to work unless I turn on both Data Roaming and International Data Roaming, despite the fact that I am well inside the borders of my country. Is this a well known issue, or am I experiencing something out of the ordinary?
Thanks in advance.

1. it wont show 3g if you are roaming, normally.
2.not always roaming when it says 1x but if you are roaming it will always show 1x
3. evdo is 3g so see above.
cant help you with the last one thought.

#2 isn't exact, I used to get 3g (EVDO) on my HTC touch diamond when roaming at work.

its not supposed to connect to 3g when roaming.
Don't you get a triangle next to your signal bar if you're roaming? I do. That would also indicate data roaming as well....
is there an advantage to roaming? I get free 3g data but I usually keep in on the sprint mode and turn off roaming.
Whats the benefit of keeping it on?

If you leave roaming turned off, you can hit areas where you either need to roam or you will get 1x data. Turning on roaming gives you the best chance to maintain a fast connection.

[Q] Using G1 Android on T-Moble Pre-paid with low data plan

I think I managed to say a lot of money by going with a low data plan, but they're telling me the android is going to constantly ping the Internet using up all the data allowance. Is there a way to disable the data functionality when I don't want it (like turning off wireless on a laptop)? When I'm connected to a Wi-Fi network, does it automatically use the local network instead of data minutes? If not, how can I make it do that.
I was able to find my data usage on my.t-mobile.com and verify that as long as Wi-fi is available, it will use it instead of the data plan. I was also able to confirm through another test that images in text messages don't count on the data plan, but under texts instead.
This is good. Now I have to find out how to tell if applications are pinging the network on their own or not.
yes indeed

[Q] Concerns about data roaming

I hope I'm posting this in the proper category.
Namely, I'll be leaving my home country very soon and travel abroad and I will most certainly need to occasionally do SSH connection to my server over 3G, which leads me to data roaming. Now, data roaming at my carrier is super expensive, so I was wondering if there is a way to completely disable data while in roaming, but still be able to connect to 3G and EDGE when I explicitly tell the phone to do so (eg. for SSHing somewhere or checking in on Foursquare, refreshing Twitter timeline, etc).
I saw that there's an option to uncheck Data Roaming in Wireless & Network settings, but I would say that will completely turn off all data connections and NOT allow me to manually and explicitly initiate data connections. Is that true? Is there a way to make it connect to 3G only when I explicitly tell it to while remaining disconnected otherwise?
Allow all phone data settings on. Download APNdroid or similar (APN on off widget) from the market. Open app and set any preferences, then add widget to home screen. Activate by tapping on off on (or something like that). Green on, red off.
All it does is rename the APN settings so it "fails" to connect.

Your quite correct in that it will stop data connections, but why not turn it back on when you want to connect?, the other possibly cheaper option would be to, as long as your phone is not networked locked, buy a local PAYG sim with data and use that in your phone when you want to use 3G
Buying local sim would be wise option....
Sent from my Desire HD
A local prepaid SIM is a good idea, far cheaper than using data roaming.
Additionally, to avoid background data usage, you might want to install Droidwall and allow only the SSH app to connect to the internet.

Because I want only that one application to use the data connection when I want it to, without all other apps opening their own connections for sync and other stuff, since I have a lot of apps and accounts that sync in certain periods of time (this is an Android device, after all ).

[fixed] Data while roaming?

I'm running ACS recovery/kernel + root; and it was also true with Zedo v2.
I cannot get any data while roaming. I have installed and run roam control. I have tried all possible options under Settings/Wireless and Networks/Mobile Data and Roaming.
Anyone else?
Edit:
Problem was fixed - see post#6

Where do you live?
no seriously
The ET4G, like previous samsung phones cannot roam on the PCS band, so if whoever your roaming on is only throwing voice over the cellular band and data over PCS then you got no data.....
No one seems to care about this bug and I don't get why not.

I'm going to have to go somewhere and roam now...(I purchased Roam Control a year ago for my Moment, but I don't want to root my ET until there is an unroot method)
I ALWAYS had data while roaming with my Samsung Moment. Granted, sometimes it was slow as molasses, but I always had it!
I'm actually seriously considering turning this phone back in... With Sprint's crappy network, once you get inside a building, often the only signal you can get is a roaming cellular signal... which makes the GSII a hair more than useless.

I had this happen. I had to go under Wireless and Network then to Roaming. Uncheck all settings in Roaming guard and Roaming settings. Reboot phone then go back and check everthing under Roaming settings again. I think I had to enable the data block under roaming guard. Anyway - it finally told me I was roaming and asked for permission to connect to data. Also using Roam Control.

Thanks. That actually fixed the problem. More can roam with data.
