My wife dropped her Samsung Galaxy SIII and I'm wondering exactly what the damage is:
1] There are a few small sliver 'cracks?' on the screen about 1/2 inch each. They look to be pretty deep
2] The phone can 'turn on', but nothing happens to the screen - You can hear it booting up and all the programs starting up, but the screen isn't work
3] The screen doesn't seem to be reactive. Normally the phone is locked and a simple swipe opens it with a 'drop' sound. This doesn't happen. However, the buttons below the digital screen light up when pressed.
So, from what I can tell there are three components to the 'screen'
1- Front glass, 2-The Display, 3-The Digitizer
It seems like all three are broken here.
So, is my assessment correct here?
Also, I'm looking at having it repaired here, for $225. :
The site 'gophermods' [.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=897]
"This repair service repairs and replaces:
Unresponsive Touchscreens
Cracked Screens
Distorted Display
This repair is for all carriers: AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon and Sprint."
[Seriously, I'm not advertising for them.. just honestly asking.. they won't let me post a URL, cuz I'm new]
Regardless of the problem, does it sound like these people will fix the problems?
Any suggestions? Thanks all in advance.
[Note: I scanned the very large "Galaxy S3 Cracked Glass (Read this if it has happened to you!)" thread and didn't see what I was looking for]
That seems to be a good assessment of the situation. $225 is pretty cheap for the glass, digitizer, and screen. So good luck to you.

Before spending $300 or more, try searching online like craigslist. You might find good ones for like 400.

Hi.
my question says it all.
i have a perfect galaxy nexus screen. no weird grid. no weird uneven colors. nothing. just perfect. however, i have few scratches by mistake on the screen " digitizer it self "
is it possible to replace the digitizer without replacing the screen ? money isnt an issue even if its the price of a new phone. its just i have OCD and i do like my screen perfect.
so . is it possible to replace the digitizer alone ? " even if i have to buy them both lcd screen and digitizer ", i will keep the new screen extra for future
I don't think the digitizer is up for sell separately yet.

I've read that the glass is fused to the housing and display but I'm interested in this as well as I have a spec of dust under my screen.

I'm unable to post links yet, so go to iFixit and search for "Galaxy Nexus teardown". Seems the screen and digitizer are fused together, sorry

i did go to that site before you post it. thanks for trying to help. however i am just wondering that even if they are fused together, can i still take them apart ?
i really dont want to lose that screen
Hopefully the overall quality will improve with the samoled displays in the near future and buying a replacement housing/digitizer will almost guarantie you a good result (dont hold me to it though, just wishfull thinking).. i have some micro scratching aswell (seems to be a normal problem with this device) but only really visable under a really strong super-led flashlight. I'm starting to feel ok with it however and decided to wait with getting a replacement till the price has gone down.

I read that one of the members here used a blow dryer on the screen and used a suction cup to remove the screen on their Galaxy S II. If these two devices were constructed similarly then this method may have some merit.

the "super" in super amoled means the digitizer and screen are fused together.
i dropped my phone from about 3 feet and broke under my screen but not the screen itself can anyone recommend a good company to buy these parts from??
There's a guy from HK selling it on eBay here. However that means that you'd need to change it yourself. I have looked at the ifixit website about the assembly of the device; however it depends on how comfortable each one is with changing it themselves.
It is quite expensive as well... I will still get a quote from Samsung prior to venturing with this option.

To the OP
Where are you getting the digitizer from? If it is sold as fused with the screen, then there's not much trying to tear the combo apart and getting it to look like a machine job will be a challenge. I assume you'd need to build a clean room setup somehow...
Anyways you could possibly verify if the screen quality is to your standards with the eBay seller I mentioned above and buy on that arrangement; however getting the other side to agree/be honest may not be easy.
Instead, why not buy the best screen protector? Those wet ones you get nowadays. Not only will it get rid of the scratches but will also protect your phone for a long time...I think that is a better cheaper investment unless you are sitting on a pile of....cash...

I have since this post received 2 more scratches and both is showing quite easy with screen off in normal lighting, last one i got today and that oneĀ“s really bugging me since it looks like something rubbed against the screen a few times.. I always.. always always! only keep my phone in my pocket on my jacket with a plastic zipper and only a microfiber cloth goes in the same pocket.. digitizer actually feels weaker then my old X10's which (apart from that i dropped it and cracked a corner a month before getting the GN) looks rather good to have been tossed around and been riding my workpants which has been everything BUT clean.. a few deep scratches but 18 months of abuse, i'd say it's in good condition! I refuse to put a screenprotector on this phone, initially i did get one.. that one scratched during installation using a regular creditcard and it just looked terrible with the peeling around the edges so, no more protectors.... and i (along with other here at the forum) believe that it is not actually the glass that scratches but rather the oleophobic coating getting scratches.. because the scratches are really really thin but clearly visible.. it's a shame.. but when the next scratch comes, i'm gonna stop being anal about it and just toss it in my right jeans pocket where the phones usually go.. never in my workpants though.. that would kill the coating in a day.
Dropped my phone on asphalt today and got a big hairline crack across the screen . (Attached pics)
It really hurts cause i always baby this phone and just the rush to get to work and in my car, completely missed my pocket.
The screen is still responsive to touch and seems to be working normal thank god the lcd screen wasnt damaged and the digitizer didn't shatter.
Got a few questions t
1) just wanted to clarify that the digitizer lies ontop the LCD screen?
2) and that is all that needs replacing?(from damage seen in the pics)
3) also mine is branded just HTC(no carrier, so it's international GSM version?)
4) would it matter if i bought a replacement digitizer meant for the at&t version or not?
5) should be getting a one x that had some water damage and is no longer working. would the digitizer from this phone be a viable option for me to use as a replacement or should i just order the part online.( I really want it replaced fast and if i have to order the replacement it will take about a week to 2 weeks to arrive in my country
so apparently i can't attach any urls until i make 10 posts or i'd show u guys the part i wanted to order but its basically just a screen digitizer from ebay with tools needed for about $17.86.(is that cheap, good or expensive price considering the item + tools)
can you guys please search for it on ebay?the title of the post/part is Touch Screen Digitizer Glass Lens Replacement For HTC One X S720 + Free Tools
the link above is the item i'm looking to order for replacement. is it the right part i'm looking at?and would that be all i need or is there anything else i should add?also quality wise would it be top pick or are there any better options available?
Attached some pics also.Advice would be greatly appreciated.
You are unlikely to be able to separate the digitizer and lcd without damaging the LCD.
A water damaged phone may have a water damaged screen.
Search one of the other broken screen threads for more information.
I've replaced several screens on captivate.easiest way is get replacement(LCD+digetizer) from ebay,Google procedure.watch or read as many times as needed to feel confident to take apart phone.the hardest part is seperating LCD from phone(they use adhesive to secure LCD to phone).I used razor to carefully cut adhesive.
Most components are plug&play.just follow guide completely,u should be fine.
My LCD was $85 on ebay.good luck.

i think i'm screwed. so i previosly dropped it and it got a few cracks in the top right corner only one of which dipped down onto my viewing area. functionality was not affected. really as good as you can hope for as far as cracked screens go.
dropped it again and didnt hurt the glass any more, but the screen is now black. phone is on, buttons light up, i can even USE THE SCREEN, i just cant SEE anything. i can answer calls by knowing where to swype my finger and end them by pressing where the end button is. for a brief moment the very very bottom edge had a thin stip of green-pixely-ur-fcked-dude at the bottom.
So my question is what broke??? I dont really think the previous cracks are relevant but just in case...
Things i have done: restarted the phone by holding power button. removed/reinstalled battery, unplugged/replugged screen inside phone, whapped phone a few times, squeezed phone gently in various areas, searched forums until bleary eyed, browsed internet for phone cases, browsed internet for pictures of cats, posted this thread.
the extent of my knowledge is that the screen is composed of glass on top of the digitizer on top of the AMOLED (aka the LCD?). and before i realized i could still use the screen i was praying i was super lucky and maybe the screen came unplugged. but not so.
any advice? i previously saw that replacement glass is cheap but read that the whole setup is expensive. i do not have insurance on the phone. i do intend to fix it myself.
Most likely the screen needs to be replaced now. Theres a how to on this. Ebay sells replacements.

You need a flip phone.
Definitely your LCD broke. You can buy both LCD and digitizer on eBay for about a hundred bucks I think. Its not hard to do it yourself.

For future reference did you at least have a case on it when it dropped?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
No I didn't have a case on it. probly wouldnt have saved my glass given the way it landed on gravel (8 inches off the ground btw). Mighta reduced the shock that caused this problem tho.
Well I woulndnt have guessed that LCDs usually break this way. I woulda figured if I cracked the LCD or something (under the glass) that I
would just end up with a mess of colors or something. I wonder what went wrong...
So my new digitizer and LCD will come together? will I have to buy new glass seperate?
Is it possible to pilfer to digitizer/LCD from a used phone with cracked glass? Probly not huh, cuz the videos seem to show them getting destroyed upon removal.
Thanks for the info guys.
Is there any physical damage to the phone you can see? If not, pm me as I may have an idea.

Im not sure where to put this.
The screen is cracked and the LCD is done also, the phone still rings and makes noise.
Most places want 250 to fix thats 200 more then i paid for the phone.
I searched amazon for a replacement to do myself, however, im not sure what to buy. I do not want to buy the wrong thing.
Anyone have any experience in fixing both screen and LCD, and could point me in the correct direction. Thank you.
Nobody on this site has had this happen to them?
I did. It cost me 200$ to have the official samsung screen put on it. Not the cheap 2$ fix that most people do (which looks like crap, makes the screen less sensitive, less bright, and lets dust between the screen and lcd).
The official samsung screen is pretty much the front half of the phone. Sounds like that's what you need.
And if I remember correctly, the official screen replacement cost is around 150-175$, then the remaining 25-50$ was labor

Hello everyone.
The LCD of my S3 was broken so I ordered a replacement screen on eBay.
It arrived and I replaced it without incident. (It was an LCD + Frame + digitizer assembly)
But after a couple hours I noticed that the LCD is a couple of millimeters smaller on each side.
It is really not noticeable on first sight. The first days I dismissed it because it was something that didn't bug me too much.
But I noticed that I keep mistyping when I'm using the keyboard. Also I keep missing other onscreen buttons and it drives me insane!
I think this is because the digitizer is made for a larger LCD.
First I thought that it was a software problem, but you can see the borders even when the display is off.
I tried taking a picture and you can definitely see it on the left and the bottom border.

Should I ask for an RMA? Or am I seeing ghosts here??
Love to hear your thoughts.

If you look at the spacing the Samsung logo at both the top and bottom, there is an extra bit of space and as you rightly said, the bezels on the sides are a bit thicker. If it gives you peace of mind, then go for the RMA, but chances are you might end up getting the same thing. Maybe you could try a different seller? Where did you purchase it from?

Yeah probably not
The capacitive buttons are the normal white color. In the picture they are not on.

Touch function Not working
Hi,
I am using Galaxy S3 Korean Version (SHV-E210L).
I have tried TraingleAway V2.35 to reset flash counter. But it did not reset flash counter, but damaged touch function. Now my phone display is working, but touch function is not working. I am using OTG cable with Mouse for urgent works.
I have two things which i need answer. Can some one help me.. ::crying:
1. Before i fix this, i need to reset flash counter anyway. But latest versions of TraingleAway are not working for this model and Previous versions from V2.35 is also give massge stating "Are you not using ICS". Phone has Android 4.3. So can some one give me a solution?
2. I want to fix touch problem and i search for digitizer in Ebay. But there are digitizers for GT-I9300, but not for SHV-E210L? Is digitizer for 9300is compatible for SHV-E210L? Further waht is screen lens means? Is it digitizer?
Thanks a lot

Hi, that's about the price I paid for supposedly genuine (but not) screens on ebay for my S3, my buttons are also not white as mentioned above.
The first screen I fitted went faulty after about an hour, took a while to get a refund, I had to pay postage back.
Second screen cracked after a very small drop, digitiser was OK, bought replacement screen but when changing it (with heat, etc) the digitiser separated from its backing rather than the screen.... maybe me being ham fisted but I think it was a different bonding used
Third screen/digitiser assembly now has a crack running right across it, and I've not ever dropped it! It still works so I'm leaving it alone and buying a new phone this time.
Also I find the paint comes off the frame very easily by taking it out of a hard case or screen mount and mine looks a mess after a couple of months, and the frame joint is obvious and creaks when pressed.
So these screen aren't very good - but I couldn't find a definitely genuine screen for a price that was worth bothering to fix the phone.... I would definitely get a tempered glass protector if I did fit another of these.....
