I searched around for some better headphones for my galaxy S3 (GT-I9300), to unleash the full music experience the phone got. As I prefer a more powerful earphone I feel not as comfortable with the sound of the original ones, but I don’t wanted to lose the comfort of the Samsung Headset - Microphone and Remote control.
As you can see here, I changed the original Samsung headset cable to a pair of Sennheiser Headphones. In case you are interested in doing the same here is what I Did.
What i used:
A Pair of Samsung Headset Headphones, in my Case Samsung Galaxy S3 (GT-I9300)
A Pair of Headphones, as shown in the Pictures a Sennheiser CX 300-II
A Solder Station, a bit of soldering wire
A Tool called third Hand, or another little vice
Fine Pliers and a little slot screw driver
A Voltmeter
Just to ensure. I am not responsible for any injuries, damages and defects on the headphones, your mobile, other components or your health. The following hints worked for me and my equipment, yours may be different.
If you aren’t use in Voltmeter testing’s, soldering and fine mechanical works you shouldn’t do this.
First I dismounted the silicone Ear Adapters from all headphones. Then I used the pliers to demount the Samsung headphones. In My case I grabbed the stick where the Ear Adapter was on and ripped it off. I have no further use for them, so I broke its housing.
Inside the Cables are mounted on the speaker. I used the solder station, to liquefy the soldered cable connection from the speaker.
In next step I opened the cable knot and got the cable out of the Samsung housing.
Openig the Sennheiser Headphones:
I used my fingernails to get of the silver ring of the housing, maybe also a guitar plektron will do the same. In my case it worked when I turned it around while pressing my nails in.
Please see Picture 1
With the little slot screw driver I opened up the in key and slot position of the housing.
Please see Picture 2 and 3
I also used the solder station, to liquefy the soldered cable connection from the speaker.
I noted myself on which connection which colour of wire was. On the back side of the Sennheiser Speaker there was a red sign on one of the contacts.
I opened the knot and pulled out the cable. Then I inserted the white Samsung cable in the rubber bumper. I think its important to make sure inserting the right side of the Samsung cable into the right side of the new Earphone. To ensure better gliding I used a little of my wives hand cream on the cable.
When mounted the cable in the headphone, I fastened it again with a knot. I had to be carful, the cable isn’t as strong as it seems.
This is the pin configuration I measured on my headphones. As I heard that there is more than one pin configurations in different countries, please ensure what’s yours. So the wire connection I made may differ to the one which is the correct in your case.
Please see Picture 4
Soldering, I made,
Please see Picture 5
Right Headphone:
In my case I attached the red wire of the Samsung headset cable on the Sennheiser headphone at the solder position where the red dot was.
Left Headphone:
I attached the green wire of the Samsung headset cable on the Sennheiser headphone at the solder position where the red dot was.
Please see Picture 6
Reassembling should be no problem then.
Have fun with your modified headphones.
Please see Picture 7

I think the originals are ok but, I'm am a bit of ambitious in music, the original samsungs speaker don't have such powerful bass and not so clear highs. So they don't give a good picture of what a great sound experience the Phone itselve provides.
If you buy a original Headset at Amazon its about 5€, the Senheiser are 35€. There might be the difference from .
Greetings
Awesome
I don't understand though why you used the samsung cord couldn't you have just bought headphones from amazon that had their own cord? Or did you have to have the samsung cord because of the plug to match the microphone? Thanks

I didn't find here the pinout description of 2,5mm jack connector from XDA2.
There is stereo out, microphone in and two buttons.
I tried to buy 2,5mm connector, but it is not usable - connector itself fits to the XDA2, but the connector's body is too thick so the connector can not be fully plugged in.
So i bought some Nokia portable handsfree, which is also equipped with 2,5mm jack with four pins. So all i need is to know, how it should be connected.
I also bought a small plastic box, two 3,5mm stereo females and two little buttons. All of those things will be installed into that tiny box (plus the Nokia 2,5mm male connector). So this will work as an universal adaptor: from XDA2 to anything. I already bought big HiFi earphones with built-in microphone - it has two male 3,5mm jacks - one for stereosound, second for the microphone - so I'll be able to connect it to the XDA2 using my homemade tiny box and HiFi telephoning will become the reality ;-))
I'd also like to make a "homemade" simple car handsfree : I'll connect XDA's audio out to AudioIn on my car audio (also suitable for playing MP3 from XDA on car audio system). And I'll connect a standalone external microphone to XDA, microphone will be placed somewhere in the cabine.
Does it sound insane? Or realistic? Does anybody know the XDA2 jack pinout?
http://xda-developers.com/connectors/
this is xda1 but they are suppose to be able to use the same headphones
so it would help a bit
even though the xda1 dont support the 2 button thingy
Hey, as I trashed my cable I had to find out a little bit about the connecter
I write this from memory, so please handle with care ;-) :
from top to bottom
top ring - stereo out (left or right)
next ring - stereo out (right or left)
next - microphone in
next - ground
metallic ring in the inside of the connector - phone switch
By the way.. these pins are protect versus each other.. you'll have some tries..
Alex
The truth is that I can use the system connector instead of the 2,5mm jack.
AudioOut and MicrophoneIn pins are on the system connector as well...
So meybe I'll make SystemConnector-to-3,5mmJack adaptor ;-)
Or is there a difference?
Ehm..I had simply buyed a 2,5 to 3,5 Jack and cut a piece of it to fit into phone:

Well, OK. But it is only a stereo out, you don't have a microphone in. I'd like both of them plus those two buttons (red and green phone button)...

well if you wanted to connect something else to the sysconnector you would not be able to connect something like charger or GPS
then imho it would make more sence using the 2.5 connection which cant be used for anything but sound anyway
Well, I am looking for such a device, but then one that will work with the XDA2/MDA2
Because I would like to use my own B&O headset, but would like to keep the phone function with microphone and answer buttons
So if somebody would like to spend an hour on the web for a detailed surch
make it your self...
takes less than 30 minutes (if you know how to use a solder iron)
I did it and I am trulty happy with it.
Alex
but is it not a problem that the lengh of the 3.5mm headset get added to the length of the wire from the device to the buttons and mic
i mean the mic need to be able to reach ones mough but the lenght from ones mouth to ones ears are not that long and with the added 3.5 mm headset lenght it would seme to become a wire mess?
Yes and No...
Yes if you do nothing.
No if you wrap it up a little.
well if you wrap the wire you will create a coil line effect
and that damage audio quality
just kidding i'm not a real audiophile
It seems that info in xda-developers.com/connectors/ is aplicable to XDA I.
XDAII headset has 2 buttons, answer and finish.
I'm specially interested in the 22pin pinout, that I've told IS DIFFERENT from the XDA I.
Can anybody point me with updated info on XDA II conneectors?
Thanks

Alex,
This is correct. The XDA II uses 5 pins instead of four. The switches are both connected to the 5th ring on the inside.
Until now, I wasn't able to find this connector.
Seems it's only used on the XDA II.
The diagram of the XDA I connector is correct, only the button isn't connected over the microphone to ground. So if you only need audio and mike, use that schematic.

I was handed down a pair of Sennheiser HD205 headphones. I had used them a few times before and they sound awesome! However, since I got them they make my music sound weird. For example, sometimes it turns every song into an instrumental version or it is really soft and will get really loud if you jiggle the cord right.
I cut off the jack and found 4 wires inside. 2 copper wires, 1 copper wire painted blue and another copper wire painted red. I removed the paint using acetone nail polish remover and fine sandpaper. Now that I have the exposed wires, I connected them in a new 3.5mm jack from radio shack. I think the colored wires are + and the unpainted copper wires are -. Note these wires are actually bunches of wires with tiny radiuses.
Sadly, when I connect the wires in I still have the distortion problems. It mostly has to do with losing the vocals. If I move the balance on my computer to all right or all left it will sound perfect. If I also connect the former red bundle to the ground of the 3.5mm and the former blue to either the L or R I can get mono.
I am thinking of cutting the wire higher and repeating the acetone procedure and rewiring again. Will that work because I don't want to keep cutting and cutting and eventually cut the whole wire to small pieces!
Your help is greatly needed and most appreciated. I really think these headphones will complement the voodoo sound on my I9000 nicely

Balancing audio?
I know this is probably a bit late. But i had a similar problem. My Sennheiser HD205 Headphones Started acting weird. They have an excellent sound of them and are really comfortable for someone like me who would wear them for a long period of time. Recently I had to get the cable fixed that went into the actual headphones because if they moved ever so slighty all sound was gone. I got them fixed and then the sound went weird the next day, when ever I played a song with a heavy bass, once the bass part came on the whole song was muted until it stopped and the vocals were distorted, then I was playing around with the sound settings on my computer and i noticed the audio balance was a bit off then usual (Left=78 and Right=78) so I brought them back down to 50:50 and it was all better . I thought maybe you should try that, seeing as nobody else left a suggestion! (If you dont know where to find the sound setting on your comp, go to: Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>Sound, and a window should pop up. right click on the speaker output you use (its called Speaker by default) and click properties then click on the tab properties and balance it to 50% on both sides) NOTE: Make shure your not playing any music (eg. Itunes) while your doing this. it MAY stop the program from working! Good Luck!

Hello,
I had the same problem. Unlike most headphones, the Sennheiser HD205 uses two separate ground wires, these are the two uncolored wires. The red one is for the right (the pin that's closer to the middle) the blue one is for the left (the pin that's further from the middle). The colorless wires both go to the ground pin.
I connected them this way, now I don't have any distortion, and I can hear the vocals loud and clear on both sides.
Sounds like you don't have ground connected to the signal source (jack).
If the jack has 3 connectors (tip + 2 sleeves) the wires go like this: tip - blue, first sleeve - red, second sleeve (furthest from the tip) - ground (usually golden).
Try an connect the two sides separately and check if they work individually. Only then connect them both. If the cable doesn't have any shor circuits it should work just fine.
Good luck!
On my WFS jack connector jumps out about 1mm... it is big problem because it stop playing music. WHY? Does somebody have same problem?

i used to get this ALOT if i just use my standard headphones directly into the socket. even if it doesn't "pop out", the slightest movement of the headphone jack would cause it to "disconnect" and stop playing music.....VERY annoying.
I managed to "fix" it by simply buying, a cheap as chips headset adapter on amazon. I have no idea why this works, as the plug on the end looks identicle to the one on my headphones, but for some reason, if i use my headphones i get disconnects.....if i use the wired headset adapter then plug my headphones into that it works. no more disconnects.
like i said, no idea WHY this is the case, but it worked for me. i juse bought the cheapest one i could find, i think it was around £2 on amazon.

if your using the original headset, i would do as stated above or:
go back to the shop and ask a refund or repair.
if your using your own headphones:
try using your headphones in other devices (pc, mp3 player) and see if it does the same, if not contact the company where you bought your wfs if you still have warrenty, i would not accept this kind of hardware failure.
good luck with your headphones

Well, i have Razer Electra headphones... it have support for HTC (mic on wire, 4-pin jack)

my theory: magnetic??? your jack from amazon is magnetic, check this now please

phone is ok, original earphones from HTC connect perfect but others not.
YEP! HTC earphone JACK CONNECTOR IS MAGNETIC, SO WE NEED MAGNETIC 4-pin JACK CONNECTORS!!!!
best will be reduction JACK MALE 4pin to JACK FEMALE 4pin
AFTER THIS I HATE HTC FOR HARDWARE SUPPORT!
Looks my orginal htc headset is not orginal or something cus same thing happening to me.
that's a negative on the magnetism front :s
as I sayd... and headset adapter is magnetic?
no, neither the headset nor the headphones are magnetic. I can genuinely see absolutely no difference between the two plugs, but one works, one doesn't :s
then i don't know.
I to have problems with 3.5mm in car its loose any slight movement will turn off music. i will find an adapter to.
I need JACK 3.5mm 4pin reduction for my headphones.. On cable I have mic...
can somebody find it JACK 3.5mm 4pin male to JACK 3.5mm 4pin female? I can't find anything...
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110760294384
just ordered this. according to the listing there are 3 in the pack, and that's only around £2.70. So if it works out well, and anyone in the uk wants one I should have 2 spare when they arrive, just let me know if you want one and you can have it. I'll try it out first when they get here though. From the description, it sounds like it takes the 3.5mm 4 pin (with headset) and converts it to 3.5mm 3 pin (normal headphones). So it should be perfect if you don't want use of a mic/headset.
My headset cable adapter works well to be fair, but the extra cable does make thigns a bit unmanageable, so hopefully this adapter will work out a bit better
I had the same problem. After trying different headphones, I decided to take a small slotted screw driver.
Just stick it into the slot and turn it a few times without too heavy pressure and now everything works nice!

No seriously, I was really worried before I did it but it worked out fine!
those plugs for headphones 'felt' cheap the first time i plugged my headphones... they rly have little something that stops you from plugging propperly so you just roll it few times, i did it with my hp-s...just roll and push a bit... and i smiled just how u did it with screwdriver xD
but the main thing is, that it works... you guys decide: screwdriver or headphones jack xD

Dude thanks for digging it up, I've been having the same problem and now its fixed. This should be in the FAQ
I had a blue GS3 before and the headphones fit snug and now I have a new white one and if I turn the headphone jack slightly it cuts out completely on one ear and is very loose crackly also.....should I take it in the store for a replacement or what?
I'm having the same problem. Pissing me off. I'm noticing that it's with mostly with aux cables with 2 levels instead of 3 (don't notice with the OEM Samsung cables)
*although I have the white one*
tried different roms too, same problem.. didn't have this issue with me gs2

had that problem with a 3.5mm audio jack that was attached to the car. keep the audio jack plugged into your phone, reboot with it still plugged in, and it should start to work. that is, unless the wire is bad, or the base is too big- causing it to not go in fully.
is your headphone jack a right angle? i had the same issue with my one x that i returned but getting a headphone jack to jack adapter so instead of having a right angle and going to a straight one fixed it. waiting on a new adapter so i can try the same fix on my s3 that has the same issue with my right angle headphone jack...
having the same issue with multiple aux cables. rebooting while plugged didn't help

Solution
Yep, That's the same here. Turns out that the jack is 'kinda cheapo' plastic that is, and if like me you use larger headphones (non-earbuds) that the side to side pull of the larger plug will eventually force a contact pin to no longer make that contact. You can pull and twist the cord and sound comes in and out on one side. in my case the right side.
Solution: I bought a replacement Speaker/Headphone assembly. Took me less then 5 minutes to disassemble the device and pop in the new OEM part. Problem solved. I got the part here ---> http://www.2buya.com/spare-parts/components/genuine-samsung-galaxy-s3-i9300-speaker-intenna-ear-jack-gh59-12159a.html
I chose this rather then wait for Mobilicity to take weeks to get it fixed for me.
Note: Ignore the i9300 part label. The stock part I removed from my t-999v also said i9300 on it. There the same.
Did you test the headphones on anything else? Try another set of headphones?

Naturally. I tested on two identical Sony studio monitors, and a few earbuds. The problem was 100% hardware.
Have you guys tried cleaning out the headphone jack? Last time I had issues I had a little bit of lint stuck at the bottom and couldn't insert the headphone jack all the way in. Give it a shot and shine a light in, hopefully the issue you guys are having will just be a little lint!

That's a possibility, albeit a slim one. I used a jewelers loop in my case. Inside are multiple contact pins. Not all are used for sound. One of my pins was 'pushed' inward. That's why jiggling the plug causes a temporary solution. After I removed the original part I dissected it. The pins are set into the molded plastic as a single piece. The pins themselves are a single ribbon bent to flex a bit.
I figure in my case to much flexing of a the heavier plug with the weight of the coiled cord (Sony MDR-7505 Headphones) caused it to mash inward as I walked around. I'll never know for sure.
I hope it is just lint in the OP's case. If not at least parts are available. Non OEM parts are even less then what I paid. That or just wait for the repair done by Samsung.

I'm having the same problem, but for me it's worse when the headphones go too far down. In other words I intentionally put some tiny bits of paper into the hole and now it doesn't cut out as easily. But still if I move the plug too far to one side it'll cut off, which is really annoying when it's in my pocket and I occasionally bump the chord plug with my hand. I generally use iphone earbuds. I've read that the samsung jacks are a slightly different size than standard. This might contribute to the problem.

Where did you read that Samsung jacks are a different size? I have used several different 3rd party headphones and have not had a single issue. They all fit and work perfectly.
If anything is made with a different size, I'd be much quicker to suspect Apple before Samsung. They love building proprietary hw so people will be forced to do things their way!
Have you tried a different brand of headphones? It is possible the jack itself is messed up somehow too though.

Honestly I've only tried my old and new iphone earbuds. Both have the same problem, but what I discovered by shaving the plastic away from the tip of the jack is that the further in it goes the more it cuts off, hence shoving paper into the hole to keep it from going in too far.
Another thing I did notice is that this problem started when the headphones became much looser. When I first bought the SGS3 I had to really push hard to get the headphones into the phone. I could literally drop the phone from my pocket and it wouldn't detach and would just dangle from my ears. Now it comes out really easily. Clearly something isn't gripping well enough. That seems to be the real issue I guess, but I have no idea how to get in there and fix it. I don't want to risk breaking my phone trying to take it apart.
sounds like the inside of the jack is messed up. When you were having to push hard to put them in, it most likely bent or wore out the part it snaps into over time.
Only real solution to that, that I can think of, would be to replace the jack I'm afraid.

While I'm a big fan of using Bluetooth media adapters (admittedly the ones more designed for wearing such as Samsung hs3000 and sony mw1) that is not his question. He wants to be able to plug the phones directly into the phone but his case doesn't have a large enough port.
Using a Bluetooth adapter brings extra issues. Sound quality is diminished slightly. Battery consumption is increased, not to mention you have another device to have to charge.
The adapter you linked has a rather funny headphone port, the port should be embedded in the case like all others are.
If I were him, I'd consider taking an exacto knife and trimming the hole a bit, or just getting a short extension cable from somewhere such as monoprice.
Depending on their comfort level in doing so, they could also remove the plug on their headphones. Some headphones are easy to do this with, some are not. Headfi.org can be a great resource on this.

Yeah, I know what he was asking. But if he's fine with using BT, this is another solution. Just trying to provide options. I use this one in the car, where I plug my cassette adapter into the receiver so my phone is connected wirelessly. Cheap alternative to installing a bluetooth system in the car.
i am not too comfortable with cutting the hole to a larger size and not a fan of bluetooth unfortunately. i searched through monoprice and couldn't find a short extension cable that was as small as the apple earphone cable's jack. any ideas where one exists?

This is a replacement for a cable from the Lifeproof case. I just remembered that they use this. I think this is probably the closest to what you want.
This would work but its an extra cable to carry aroundhttp://m.ebay.com/itm/390694223478?nav=SEARCH&sbk=1
