yup, update via a flashable stock firmware zip in recovery (in the android development section i believe) or in odin (also in android dev section). make a nandroid and either run on stock or flash whatever rom you want to try out. of course, since your phone is rooted now with custom recovery already installed, you could just make a nandroid and flash something now. if you want to revert to stock, download the latest official firmware release then. cheers
Saw this in the development section. It looks to be cwm or twrp flashable 4.1.1.

Samsung KIES is where i updated mine to 4.1.1. i believe KIES also allows you to revert back to ICS if necessary. (it's called phone recovery or something like this).

Try mobile Odin in the play store. Download and extract the firmware to your computer. Then put it on the root of your external or internal sd card. Run mobile Odin from your phone and choose the ever root option. You will then have the newest firmware, rooted, with all your data intact.

If already rooted the stock ROM on a new TMo S3 with the first ODIN-based solution posted (CM recovery), can I use the ROM manager to update the newly released TMo update via stock ODIN flashable ROM with root injected into the system image - TMO T999UVALH2, without having to go through all the steps with ODIN, ...
If the ROM manager is not to be used for root66_TMO_T999UVALH2.tar, then are the steps provided in the link above still useable, even for previously rooted S3?
[OT] After having rooted the phone, checking the flash counter I found it to be 3. Any idea why?
Root66 version is a tar file so u have to update via Odin. Also u need to be on stock recovery not cwm.

Thank you for the follow-up. Although I am done with the upgrade via the easiest path: Kies to be able to install the latest official OTA-released -> then re-root using the original link I sent, I am a little confused about your last statement: the root66 I have is inclusive of the UVALH2, which is the latest official version, in my understanding. I found a reference to an UVALH3 (supposedly JB related), but that is not what Samsung / TMo delivered OTA lately, and I don't think that's what you meant?!?

do not double post.
you are currently ON the latest stock firmware for your device. are you wanting to install a custom ROM to get a newer (4.2.2) release?
you can use Rom Manager to update your recovery. once thats done, if you havent done so yet, boot into recovery and make a nandroid (backup). you may need it down the road.
yes!
Yes I want to know how i can update my 4.1.1 once the newer Jelly Bean 4.2.2 update is available.
i have made a nandroid back and i also made a titantiam backup..
is there a newer version of CWM for my phone??rom manager says no.

The 4.2.2 custom roms are located in the Original Android Development section. There is no 4.2.2 update from samsung. Look them over and read up on the flashing process. The link in my signature has some good information.
Using Bell SGS3 running Task AOKP latest 4.2.2 but want to downgrade back to 4.0.4 (stock). I do have a backup of my original 4.0.4 and can see it under clockwork rom manager but not under CWM (after reboot) Its only showing anything ive backed up since upgrading to 4.2.2. Forgot to add that i'm using the 32GB version of the phone, NOT the 16gb.
Reason being i wanted to unlock the phone and keep it rooted and stock. So i guess go to 4.1.1? Whats the best way to do this? thx
You can use Odin to flash back the Stock ROM. I'd recommend flashing the newest Stock ROM since it has the latest (not so recent) updates and security patches. Stock ROM Firmware Download Links HERE
Make sure you are running the latest CWM, as it's likely the file system structure that's causing the issue. My guess is your older backups are in the non 0 folder, while the new ones are in the 0 folder. You can move your older backups to the newer folder and that should fix it, or the easier way is to make sure you are running the latest CWM.

My Note 2 is SGH-I317M (Canadian) locked into Bell Mobility. I tried the method described here but it as some people mentioned the option number 4 never show up.
- Should I downgrade the baseband firmware to 4.1.1 ? How can I do that?
- How can I backup my original baseband, so that after unlock I can put this back? (Ideally, I want the phone to be as much as close to stock as possible).
I would appreciate if someone can guide me into right direction. Thanks.
Baseband version: I317MVLUCMK5
I solved it and now have an amazing unlocked phone.
For future reference:
- Use TWRP to backup your modem
- Download ROGERS_MODEM_I317MVLALJ2.zip (Modem firmware from Android 4.1.1) from http://d-h.st/rJq
- Go to TWRP and install this zip
- Unlock
- Restore newer modem back using TWRP
For me, Odin failed!
The J2 modem is all anyone needs to flash. I also had to go through a couple different files until I found a flashable zip that worked.

So this allows us who are on android 4.3 to flash back to android 4.1.1 and unlock the phone via the hidden menu? How do you actually backup the baseband of the phone. When i last tried to flash a 4.1.1 stock firmware over my rooted note 2 running android 4.3, it said failed and wouldn't even load into recovery!
Thanks bro I was having trouble finding a correct modem to do this trick.

YES!!! Just wanted to say... THANK-YOU!!! It worked!
I just rooted my AT&T Galaxy S3
Specs:
Model number: SAMSUNG-SGH-I747
Android Verson: 4.3
I am trying to install the AOKP Rom for my device. I have it all downloaded and know how to install it but I keep getting Status error 7. What is happening? I read a little online and it says this error is for whenever you have the incorrect ROM version? Please help!!
Install the latest cwm onto your phone and flash from recovery mode.

If you already have a custom recovery CWM then just find the most up to date version of it. You obviously installed once already. Also are you referring to stock 4.3?

Also getting Status 7 error
I had TWRP installed (whatever ver comes with toolbox app)
Read reply, and installed latest version of CWM Touch from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2152769
Still getting Status 7 on two different ROMs.
Now, I had been on 4.1.1, rooted and flashed a custom ROM no problem
Had some problems with my TMO service (I have another thread in this forum) and ended up doing an ODIN flash back to stock (4.0.4)
Which I have now sitting at stock, rooted. Is it possible that I'm getting the status 7 because both of the ROM's I'm attempting to flash are 4.4.2 and that is too big of a leap from 4.0.4? I'm going to grab a 4.1.x rom now to see if any different, but wanted to share history and that I was getting same error
The easiest way for me to get 4.4.2 onto an s3 was this:
1) copy a custom rom to your sd card (internal or external)
2) use Odin to flash back to any stock rom for your phone;
3) use Odin to install the latest version of Philz Touch Recovery from here (get the tar version and flash in PDA): http://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/d2att;
4) update to the most recent non-4.3 bootloader: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2321310
5) do a full wipe in recovery;
6) flash a custom 4.4.2-based ROM from recovery.

Your main problem is that you need an updated bootloader. Please read up on this as it has been covered in great and very extensive detail throughout these forums. One bootloader will cause you to no longer to be capable of using ODIN to flash back to any stock based ROM without bricking your phone so you need to be careful.

Read more and you will see that cwm recovery is highly recommended for flashing 4.4.2 roms. Some roms dont flash good with twrp.
