OK, so I'm running cm7.2.0 and went to install cwm touch 5.2.8 through rom manager and it claimed successful, but upon recovery boot the white hboot/fastboot screen shows with s-on. If I am correct, it should be s-off and that is my problem. I would prefer an ondevice fix as my laptop was hit by a stray bullet this past weekend, seriously. So what to do, what to do?

I would try moving to a new location, before you get hit by a stray bullet.otherwise borrow someones computer, your gonna need it.Maybe ask the guy that shot it.
Yea that's probably a good idea. But for getting my recovery back, do I go through the process of unlocking my bootloader and installing the recovery that way? And I suppose I should use the recovery used in all the guides, and not try to change to cwm touch or can i install center my directly from pc? Scratch my ondevice fix request.

You can still flash roms while s on with the EVO. Just not radios or splash screens. Use fastboot method to get smelkus recovery.

How can I still flash ROMs without an accessible recovery? That would be nice to know. But I am going to go fastboot smelkus method. I want a recovery, so. Is there anyway to install cwm or cwm touch?

You can't flash without a recovery installed first. Install Smelkus and don't look back. CWM is known for issues on the EVO. Either use Smelkus or TWRP.

I see a lot of rom threads that say you MUST update your radio to use the rom. Doing a search I also saw a lot of posts saying you can't flash radios if you used unrevoked to root your Evo. So what does this mean for those of us that used the 2.2 root guide which uses unrevoked? Do I really HAVE to update my radio to use these roms? Since I used the 2.2 guide would it be safe to unroot and then root with simple root so I can flash a new radio? Or should I just not worry about it and flash away?
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Wow nothing? I tried flashing the new radio and it doesn't work. Gets aborted by clockwork. Does anyone have an answer? I've searched here and ppcgeeks and found nothing.

You can flash radios if you are s-off.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
i have rooted 3 different devices using the 2.2 method, and from what i can tell, you dont *need* to flash a radio. if you do part 2 of the method, it basically loads a 2.2 rom that has Super User enabled. Im no dev, but from what i can tell, flashing the radios have to be done in 2.2 because the way the 2.2 software communicates with the radios (cell and wimax) differently, so the radio has to be updated to handle this change. using part 2 puts your radio back to the 2.15.***whatever Official sprint radios.
flashing the radios are basically for anyone coming from a 2.1 rom who hasnt been updated already.
just idle speculation....can someone else confirm this for me?

I thought using unrevoked forever put you at s-off. Do you know where I can check this? Didn't see it anywhere in clockwork recovery.
@newbie: I followed part 2 and still have 2. 05 radio. Think I should go back and flash a stock 2. 2 again to try and get the radio flashed?
Thanks for the help guys, far different from the winmo and webos hacking I'm used to.

You can check A-off by turning your phone off... then hit and hold the volume down button and hit and hold the power button still holding the volume down button.. brings you to the recovery. On top shows s-off s-on.. unrevoked forever completesbthe full root and nand.

I have notice coming doing the downgrade to 2.1 and putting any new Rom I have way better download and up speed.. I use to get max 40 kilobytes now same area I get 125.. where is usually get 125 I get double that and even hit 1.2 mbps. I'm happy and didn't do any radio updates like they said to do..

I read up above that you are using clockwork, right? You need to use amon-ra recovery I believe to flash the radios...have you tried amon ra?
i flashed both with clockwork, when i flashed a rom i did do both the radio and wimax, don't think i even bothered to check to see if i was already up to date, but did it anyways just to be safe, had no issue with clockwork.

i normally just boot into recovery, i've only used rom manager once for flashing burnt droid rom, nothing else yet.
i can't load the amon_ra recovery, doesn't actually work when i do it through rom manager, and i used unrevoked to root. just got my evo back from a 3 month long period of not having it (it broke and i was to lazy to take it in) i had RA before and was running cynogen 6, just rooted last night, and looked in the thread for RA Recovery and none of it is working.
all the directions didn't work for me, or i forgot how to adb and therefore can't do that. i tried terminal on the phone and everything, i really don't want to flash a rom until i do a nandroid with ra.
anyone care to help.

First, you cannot install an OTA when you have a custom recovery such as CWM installed. You at least need to install the original recovery image for your particular ROM before you try again.
Since the OTA in now available and official, why don't you just wait a few hours and someone will have a fully rooted version of the ROM that you can flash using CWM and not worry about losing S-OFF?
Let me give you a fair warning though, I'm not positive how Alpha set up their root, as I used XTC. BUT I know if you install the OTA with replacing CWM with regular recovery, you MAY be turned back to S-ON WITHOUT an option to get root back, UNLESS using the XTC clip. Enjoy.
Okay, I was afraid of that. I'm used to not even being able to see OTA's at all with CWM (came from Droid X), so it kind of threw me off.
Do you have any idea if the OTA is really any different from the leaked Inc S GB rom that's floating around? If, for some reason, it takes forever to get the ota rooted and they're not that different I may just install the leaked one I have.
Not trying to be a pain, just curious.
Thanks,

Check the Dev section. It looks like there is already a rooted, debloated version available.
I just created a PG32IMG.zip containing. Android-info text file and CWM recovery img renamed to recovery.img and placed it on root of sdcard
Booted into hboot and flashed it ...
Then I replaced the recovery with the stock recovery from the froyo ruu and flashed the stock recovery back....
Then flashed right back to CWM..
Never used any commands via windows or linux
I am going to install the ota and try to go back to cwm recovery and see what I can do from there.

You will recieve the OTA update and get Gingerbread. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED BY MANY that you will NOT be able to -reroot. if you can that's because of the hboot alpha gave you. but if it changes ur hboot you need XTC clip to re-root. RMK already posted a ROOTED ROM of the current OTA. SAME THING, why chance root for OTA. THEY ARE THE EXACT SAME FILES. BUT WITH ROOT! just use his ROM. my 2 cents. do as you please

Hey, Instead of Don't do this, do that, do this, don't update that, If you want the release and don't want to lose root, install from this link. This guy(rmk40) spent some time to get this out to us. Awesome work! You won't lose root, everything works.

No, it wasn't listed previously.
Probably the first stages of giving us official support.
I never installed it before because it was easy enough to use Odin and I knew we weren't supported when I got my device. That's cool though because I had read he was gonna nail down recovery and pass the phone onto the team for development. Nice step in the right direction.

And you can confirm cwm updated? Does the version in cwm show 5.0.2.6? Or does it still show 5.0.2.3? When I try to flash over compleatly stock kernel it doesnt work, it says it flashes but I cant get into cwm. I'm a flash-a-holic, and have come across a couple of Kernels that have their own recovery versions included. Off the top of my head, Phoenix and Siyah come to mind. If you recently flashed a Kernel, there is your answer.

It has done soft bricks on my phone when I go into recovery it would go to the CWM 5.8.1.5. At that point the recovery would keep rebooting to that recovery without letting me control it. I found that if you hit the home button a bunch of times it would boot back into the ROM, just fyi.
