Hey guys,
I used the AlpharevX Windows beta to S-OFF my Inc 2, then rooted using CWM (still on stock rom). I can see the OTA, and can download it, but it won't install.
The progress bar gets about 1/3 the way full then comes up with the triangle with the !.
I've tried it two or three times, did factory reset, have no idea what to do. Do I have to S-ON for it to install? If so, how exactly do I do that?

First, you cannot install an OTA when you have a custom recovery such as CWM installed. You at least need to install the original recovery image for your particular ROM before you try again.
Since the OTA in now available and official, why don't you just wait a few hours and someone will have a fully rooted version of the ROM that you can flash using CWM and not worry about losing S-OFF?
Let me give you a fair warning though, I'm not positive how Alpha set up their root, as I used XTC. BUT I know if you install the OTA with replacing CWM with regular recovery, you MAY be turned back to S-ON WITHOUT an option to get root back, UNLESS using the XTC clip. Enjoy.
Okay, I was afraid of that. I'm used to not even being able to see OTA's at all with CWM (came from Droid X), so it kind of threw me off.
Do you have any idea if the OTA is really any different from the leaked Inc S GB rom that's floating around? If, for some reason, it takes forever to get the ota rooted and they're not that different I may just install the leaked one I have.
Not trying to be a pain, just curious.
Thanks,

Check the Dev section. It looks like there is already a rooted, debloated version available.
I just created a PG32IMG.zip containing. Android-info text file and CWM recovery img renamed to recovery.img and placed it on root of sdcard
Booted into hboot and flashed it ...
Then I replaced the recovery with the stock recovery from the froyo ruu and flashed the stock recovery back....
Then flashed right back to CWM..
Never used any commands via windows or linux
I am going to install the ota and try to go back to cwm recovery and see what I can do from there.
I'll keep you guys informed

This way we will know if the s-off is similar to.unrevoked for the incredible 1. I could do this all day long with theirs.
One way to find out right.

You will recieve the OTA update and get Gingerbread. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED BY MANY that you will NOT be able to -reroot. if you can that's because of the hboot alpha gave you. but if it changes ur hboot you need XTC clip to re-root. RMK already posted a ROOTED ROM of the current OTA. SAME THING, why chance root for OTA. THEY ARE THE EXACT SAME FILES. BUT WITH ROOT! just use his ROM. my 2 cents. do as you please

Hey, Instead of Don't do this, do that, do this, don't update that, If you want the release and don't want to lose root, install from this link. This guy(rmk40) spent some time to get this out to us. Awesome work! You won't lose root, everything works.

Hello everyone,
I just got my Droid Incredible and have rooted it using Unrevoked3. I'm really enjoying it, but I have a few questions:
Am I correct in thinking that rooting consists entirely of getting su and Superuser.apk on the phone, and the hard part is setuiding and chmodding them?
What exactly is meant by "radio" in "flash a new radio"?
Why is it necessary to flash the stock recovery before applying an OTA update? Shouldn't ClockworkMod be able to do anything the stock recovery can?
(Somewhat related to the previous question) What would happen if one accepted an OTA without unrooting or applying the stock recovery?
Thank you all and sorry for my noobishness.
1. It also consists of replacing the stock recovery with Clockwork. It's ridiculously simple thanks to the unrevoked tool.
2. Radio = Baseband.
3. No, Clockwork cannot currently flash the radio.
4. I doubt anyone could answer for sure until it comes out

Thanks for the quick responses.
I'm not trying to criticize Clockwork in any way here, but why can't it flash the radio? Does it need the NAND to be unlocked, and if so, would it be possible to use Unrevoked to put on a new radio?

1. Root consists of getting the MOST access to the device so things that we're normally out of our privilege range can be accessed... i.e. flashlight/titanium back up etc. It also pushes busybox su and the custom recovery to make ADB easier.
2. Think of the radio as the bios on your PC....very important...mess with it and you can EASILY break your machine of choice.
3. The reason I am sure Koush left radio flashability out is because of the ridiculous amount of noobs that would simply destroy their device by being curious/not reading the giant red letters in most posts/just not paying attention to what they are doing. It is VERY easy to brick a device with access to flashing the radio...dangerous and probably a fail safe to keep as many bricks down as possible.
4. What would probably happen with the OTA is you will either A. Loose root and be completely stock WITH NO WAY of downgrading to gain root. B. Brick Brick Brick. C. Profit? D. It might not let you even continue with the installation because of the custom recovery...not sure though because it hasn't happened yet....just DO NOT ACCEPT ANY OTA REQUESTS.
The PB image is the only way to downgrade back to stock. Completely stock. Out of the box stock. No root...no nothing! BUT it reopens the unrevoked exploits so you can reroot and also allows you to flash the OTA is your version is older...some tricks need to be taken though to get your version older then the ota.
The OTA is said to patch the exploit to RUU to stock. That means no mores roots if you OTA. Wait it out...when it drops it will be rooted and ready for the flashness.

You need to be bone stock to get upgrade, but you can and should have s-off from unrevoked forever. Use my sig link if you need more help.
Thanks....i've got s-off so i downgraded back to the original 2.1 and everything that comes with it. Now the waiting game begins...
Good Luck with the waiting game, I'm waiting myself
I was told you just need to be on 2.1 with stock recovery and radio. Removing bloat is fine. You want to apply s-off so can get root again the update.

With the announcement made today that HTC is pushing the OTA Security update:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/1...ral-devices-that-fixes-massive-security-flaw/
Will it unroot devices or is there a way to apply this without issues? Or do we wait for it to be included in one of our favorite ROMs by the devs?
If u unrevoked forever like I did then no. But anyway its never a good idea to ota if u like ur rooted device.

Thanks for the quick reply. Thought about as much. However, where do you find the update? The article says HTC is pushing it. However, it's not on their download links page.
It does not turn you to s-off, although you do need to reflash your recovery, ie amon ra or clockwork and you news to reflash superuser.

It's always best to just flash the rooted version - it'll be up in soon after. If you're already on stock, you should be able to just wipe cache and dalvik and flash the odexed version over your current stock setup.
I'd make a nandroid backup of course, just in case.
You should be able to OTA and then flash recovery & Superuser, but you have much more control and much less risk flashing it yourself.

i am a total noob pls pm me if u have the time to help... i have a stock rooted ROM, s-off, with hboot 6.16.1002 and also have like a million and one questions. i bought the phone rooted.
What exactly do you need help with? If you just want the latest GB update just find a stock rooted rom and flash it thru recovery, brad--- the - represent numbers I can't remember on the end of his name, has a good one called sprint updated, to flash go to recovery wipe data/factory reset wipe all options including cache and dalvik cache, hopefully you are using amon RA because cwm doesn't have as many wipe options feel free to pm me if u need more help
Edit: if you flash another rom afterwords the update wont stick so there's really no point in updating just find a rom you like and flash it, that can take a while tho cuz you will need to try different roms/kernels to find what works best for you

It's called flashing, but I doubt you have root anymore. You may have s-off, but you probably don't have root access.

Hi, So about 5 days ago I rooted my Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II using the video Max Lee made from galaxynote2root(dot)com, and about 36 hours later I get a notification for an OTA update. I kept off updating because I didn't really know what to do. I'm really new to this and there's still a lot I have to learn. Anyway, I ran the update and it restarted my phone and went to the TWRP screen. I restarted the system and it stopped notifying me about the update. And I checked and it says that my system is up to date. And I also checked to see if I still have root with a root checker app I downloaded, and it said I still had root also. So, was the app wrong and I don't have root anymore? And after I updated should I have restored the backup I made when I originally rooted? Also, thanks for any help, I've looked around and couldn't find anyone else with this question.
Your phone automatically downloaded the update and was waiting to be powercycled to install. However it failed to install because it requires stock recovery to install and you dont have it. So your phone boots back up and all is good with no changess.

I also have the same issues. I did a back up of my original roms and re installed using twrp . I down load the new update and when its going to restart it goes into to twrp menu. From there i am stuck on what to do.
It failed because you're not on stock recovery. If flashing the stock ota, you need stock recovery.
If you have twrp recovery, read and review this thread:

Before I rooted my note I made a back up using twrp. Is that not a stock recovery file ?.
Yes and no. That's basically just a backup of the stock rom that's only flashable via twrp since that is the recovery used to create the nand. So yes it is a recovery but only flashable thru twrp.

Ok well I did recovered using twrp and it installed and took me back that state before the root. I was thinking that took me back to original state and then update . I did download the update but as it was restarting the twrp home sceen would pop up and not update. So now I have no root or new update. Its funny it was easier to root then to unroot.
The link I posted above would have allowed you to flash new firmware and ma7 through twrp. No unroot reroot required. ..
And like stated, you can't update the stock ota update without stock recovery.

There are 6 links on that thread, one for odex and deodex (which I have no idea what it does), and then the 2 links for ma7 one all in one, and one just regular. And then there are another set of 2 links for the kernals, one regular and one modified. I guess what I'm asking is, how do I install these and which ones should I install? I have no idea what any of them do anyway.
How
how do we go about it and what files exactly do we need? why is everyone so vague?

I have flashed over 30 SPH-L900 (Note 2) fron Sprint to Boost.
I do everything on CDMA (paid version) 3.9.
Since the L.900VPAMAZ update I can no longer change the esn to Boost because the 16 digit CDMA passcode is no longer the default passcode for the Note 2. The old pascode: 01F2030F5F678FF9 still works for the Galaxy S2 and S3 but is no longer recognized on CDMA Workshop or QXDM.
If anyone knows the new passcode please let me know.
If I find it I will post it so that noone else has this problem.
Thanks!
