I know there are threads crying about needing more space yada, yada, etc... I have read a lot of threads, but none really give a simple solution. And go ahead and flame away.. But I have rooted my phone, it was a miracle that I accomplished this. At least when I was with WinMobile and the TP2 they has simple step by step instructions on how to unlock and flash a new rom. I have the android 2.1 and always having to uninstall an app to install another because of the STUPID space limitations and the fact that I cannot install programs on my 16gb microSDHC card is making it a real pain. I should have just traded it for a 1gb card. What good is all that space I can't use? Can someone (in between flames) please direct me to a step by step method to fix this problem? I found one for the 2.2, but not 2.1.
These are the only steps I know right now that can let me store all the apps I want on a SD card and have plenty of room.
1) Sell HTC Desire
2) Buy HTC Touch Pro 2
3) Install 16gb card from the sold Desire
4) Install all the programs I want.
Simple, but right now I am regretting having sold my TP2. I like the speed of the Desire, the .1 bigger screen, But hate the limited space. So to make this thread a understandable question, here it is:
1) Can someone give me step by step instructions to let me use my SD card to make more room?
2) And can it be done with no flames?
You need to s-off first: hxxp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=805811

Tried this, For GSM phones only. Mine is CDMA.
for beginners, just move all apps to sd-card. go to settings, applications, select the app, select "move to sd card"
don't do that for widgets and live wallpapers, as they wont work anymore
for pro's: use apps2sd/a2sd and never run in storage space limitations again.

Don't have that option to "move to sd card" I think that came with 2.2, I have 2.1 on my Desire.
Is there any reason why you still have 2.1? If you are rooted you can just flash a 2.2 rom with A2SD+, this will allow you to install the apps on your SD card.
In this thread you can chose a rom you like with A2SD+, instructions on flashing should be in the matching rom thread, just make sure that before flashing the rom, you have to partition your SD card with a ext3 partition.
To partition you SD card either use Rom Manager or Gparted (Linux software)
If you use Rom Manager you need the clockworkmod recovery image, this can be installed by using Unrevoked. Once you have the clockworkmod install, download Rom Manager from the market, in Rom Manager chose partition SD card and set ext to 512Mb and 0Mb for swap.
If this gives a /!\ in recovery you have to toggle signature verification(in recovery) under 'install zip from sd card' and try again.
Edit: don't forget partitioning your sd card will wipe everything on it

Hmmm I checked out the CDMA Roms there and all have something that isn't working. MMS is broken on all 4, WiFi out on some, bluetooth on another.

I have Rom manager installed, used Unevoked3 on it already. So basically I guess I have to wait till USCC releases 2.2 (Suppose to by the end of this month), or someone comes out with a CDMA Rom that works 100%.

after you root use rom manager to partition your sd card, beware this will erase all your data and then install the open desire rom for us cdma i hope this helps,
iv tried alot roms, but open desire to is the best.
I will try open desire. Hopefully I am doing this right. What is this about the radio? Do I have to change that too?

Ok, but only 512mb? I have a 16gb card with plenty of room to spare. Or is 512Mb a fixed thing? 0mb for swap? Is this so the Desire automatically loads it somewhere else? Or is making it 0mb means it will expand if necessary?

512mb is the max rom manager can do, i have a 1.5gb ext partiton, swap isnt needed as the desire has ample ram, also sd speed are to slow for it to be useable anyway
You can do as much as you like, but i think 512 is max via Rom Manager.
you don't need to flash a new radio (thanks heavymetalmage) and don't forget before flashing the new rom, do a nandroid backup from your current rom, either via Rom Manager or recovery

CM6 is fully working on the Desire, including MMS. You can find it on forum.cyanogenmod.com and go to the CDMA Desire forum. This post has a lot of great info, especially on installing darktremor's app2sd: http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/...ellular-desire/page__view__findpost__p__74880
DO NOT flash any radios. There are no updated radios for the CDMA Desire right now. Make sure you do a Nandroid and back up your apps with Titanium Backup to make the transition the smoothest.
I used the Rom manager to do the partitions like stated, but when I open explorer it doesn't look any different. Did I do something wrong?
No probably not, you can check with Quick System Info if it worked

and by the way even after all works out and you start saving your apps to the memory card, a small portion of the app is still going to be stored on the phone, but on the bright side i have 50+ apps installed and i still have 115 mb of internal memory left, before i rooted i had only about 20 mb left.
Hi all !
OK after reading a lot of stuff on the web (mainly modaco and xda), I finally understood a bit more this Apps2Sd thingy.
Like most people I have an "internal storage" problem on my desire
Now I managed to have fully rooted HTC Desire, with security off even though the bootloader is 0.9x using unrevoked. Great piece of software
Great so far, but I still have a space problem.
After further reading, I finally understood that thestandard Froyo Apps2Sd sucks and still eats up loads of internal memory because apps aren't designed to take advantage of it and a few other reasons but I digress.
So the only solution is to install the unofficial apps2sd or apps2sd+ (the ony diference being that app2sd+ also moves the dalvik cache, right ?)
However, so far, I've only read explanations about using a2sd/a2sd+ with a CUSTOM rom.
Now I know that modaco and xda custom roms are just great (used to test a few with my old acer liquid) but well I'm very satisfied of HTC stock rom indeed. Seriously, I can't see anything to change.
So, I'd like to use a2sd/a2sd+ but avoid going through wiping the phone, falshing a new rom and all...Furthermore, I took some time to link the contacts between gmail and facebook and I wouldn't like to do it again.
Is this possible to use a2sd/a2sd+ using the standard HTC rom, without having to flash a new custom rom ? And if yes, could some kindly explain me how ?
Best regards

Theres the script for apps2sd, not sure if you can just flash the .zip though.
IMO, you might not think there's anything to change until you experience the changes, just get a custom rom and reap the benefits.
No, you need init.d support. Get a custom rom.

Allright, I finally decided to use LeeDroid's rom and, so far so good ! PLenty of free phone memory, with a ton of apps !! Thanks a lot for your usefull comments.
I was in the same predicaent yesterday, but gave up as I had to go out!
I had LeeDroid with A2SD on the phone, but it still ran out of space when I installed Need For Speed... but this was probably because I didn't have my SD Card partitioned.
Am I right when I think that I have to backup my SD Card, then go into ROM Manager and simply format the card in there for A2SD?
I tried this, but I still only see my SD card as 1 partition when I look in Windows 7. Is this right - or should I see 2 partitions?
Sorry for the newb questions - but I want to get it all sorted before I start setting the phone up the way I want!!
Windows cannot see ext type partitions, so this is ok. Yeah, backup, use ROM manager to make the partition, then recopy the backup.
Get Quick System Info from the Market, you'll see there if the ext partition is used afterwards.

Thanks for the reply.
I checked my partition with Quick System Info - and something must've gone wrong as my A2SD partition is only 16mb with only 2mb free!!
What settings am I supposed to use when I use ROM Manager to make the partition? I'm pretty sure I set the first one to 512mb and the second to 0mb like I read somewhere. Is this wrong?
Yeah, thats ok 512mb for apps and 0 for swap. Try it couple times, maybe the ROM manager didn't do it properly for the 1st time. Check with Quick System Info when its done.
Actually, you can use anything you want to format your microSDHC card. I used a computer with linux, a card reader and gparted, and I found it way more straightforward than using the phone to do the job. Gparted is included in Ubuntu and yu even have gparted live disk/usb (go to gparted.sourceforge.net. Sorry can't post links on the forum yet )

Hi,
i was lookin for a solution too and i found it.
I am running on stock rom froyo 2.2 on my htc desire.
16gb micro sd card. - no data loss.
Here is the steps.
HTC desire has to be rooted. and S-OFF (not sure if it works without S-OFF)
Busybox installed.
Next , download Gparted to partition your SD Card. (can run in VM )
Run Gparted, mount your card, USe Gparted to shrink your sd card. (i have my pics and videos inside the card up to 12gb.. and i shrink to 13gb.. It takes a looooong time.. about 13 mins to shink.. thank god my data is still intact..
i partition the extra 1gb.. set it as primary too and then format it as ext2... i have tried ext3 and ext4.. it cant be recognized by Desire.
put back yr SD card.. (if you use a card reader.. or can jus partition using Desire mounted as disk drive)
Next.. download. Link2SD , search in market..
Run the app and it will be able to detect and ask you to select the drive.. ext2 and press ok.
now.. use the app to link up yr app.. those with FRoyo app2sd.. u can click 'move to phone' and then use link2sd to link it..
you will start to see that your internal memory will increase as u move and link more apps using link2SD...
Now go to the link2sd option and set it to 'auto link' new installed app.
once u installed any new app.. it will be linked...
if the app is auto installed to SD card via the Froyo app2sd.. simply go to manage application and move it to phone and the use link2sd to link it..
(no.. you will not see the 1g size when u go under settings, you can check storage under the link2sd app)
Note: once u mount yr Desire as disk drive .. you will need to reboot your phone else if you install any new app.. it will be install to your real internal memory even thou it says linked... if this happens.. you might see low memory notification.. jus reboot your phone.. and when rebooted, it will be re-link automatically..
Cheers! i used to have 15mb left.. now i have 50++ mb.. and yet installed alot of apps.. without flashing a rom.. this will helps if you guys jus need more internal storage and do not wat to risk or go thru the restoration of data..
as usual... before you do anything... do a nandroid backup using clockworkmod recovery or any recovery and also titantium backup to backup the apps data in case anything goes wrong
Phone working well for the past 3 days
That's just AWESOME !! Many thanks for the tip, that's exactly what I was looking for

ive been looking for houra now on how to properly get data2sd and appssd working but to no avail. some rom descriptions sound like u convert thru clockwork b4 u flash and some sound like u do it after. im very confused up to this point. also im looking for a sense replica with the added features of a rooted user and no bloatware. im not planning on flashing another rom later either cause sense looks awesum but has speed and memory issues. plz lend a helping hand. i had my sgs up and hacke din afew hours. been always 2 days now and i still dont know wtf im doing
ok first start off with apps2sd, data2sd is still experimental..... all you have to do, is create a secondary partition on your sd card, in either the ext2, ext3 or ext4 file system, then just flash an apps2sd enabled rom from recovery ....... job done
I'm having problems with this on my Desire..
I made the EXT3 partition on my rooted HTC Hero.
Under "Partition sdcard" i set Swap-size = 1024 and Ext2-size = 1024.
When it was done i choosed SD:ext2 to ext3.
And then i put the SD-card on my Desire.
1. First i made a EXT3 partition on my SD-card.
2. Then i flashed this ROM on my phone.
3. Before the first boot i flashed this file.
4. Then rebooted the phone, but it still says only 140MB free space.
Please help - cant really figure out how to do it..

If you want Data2SD though, you can checkout my Rom thread..Sounds exactly what the doc ordered. It does come with a few third party apps-Astro, Titanium etc which can be immediately removed by flashing an addon zip file.
And for the record..this particular flavor of Data2SD is no more experimental..

dude apps2sd does not increase your internal storage, it creates a symlink between /data/app/ and the SD-EXT, so when you install an app, rather than the apk going straight into the /data/app/ directory it goes to the the ext partition, taking up less to none internal storage...
Data2sd does increase your internal storage, but unless you have a class 10 sd card, you desire is going to end up slower than your hero lol and the constant R/W cycles mean your sd card will be dead before you know it

1. root it (alpharev/unrevoked)
2. s-off (revolutionary)
3. NAND backup the current ROM from recovery mode
4. flash custom HBoot based on your requirement (refer to table in alpharev.nl)
[by this you get more internal memory increased, maximum you can get
332Mb for data]
5. install custom ROM of your choice which uses different scripts to move apps
to sd (s2e, a2sd, data2ext, etc....)
6. NABD backup the newly installed custom ROM
7. partition SD card for Fat32 and EXT3 (1gb) using gparted
8. reflash it the custom rom or restore from the back
you can refer to rooting guide which is available in the xda forum, below url may also help you regarding custom roms

Root your phone mate, and then use a RoM with data2SD If you want to stay with HTC sense then I recommend Droidzones RoMs.
This one is Sense 2.1
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1143456
And this one is Sense 1.0
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045824
Note you will need a SD card class 4 and above, Read up about Gparted after you have Rooted your phone this will let you partition your Sd card Giving you upto 2GB internal Memory.
If your bored of HTC Sense, I recommend MIUI RoM its superb
Good luck
HUummm... why is it always so hard for me?
I tried to root with un Revoked which I have used in the past but that failed because I have 2.3.3 installed.
I then went back to my Froyo RUU but that failed because of the H Boot.
Finally I rooted with http://revolutionary.io and now need to sort myself out with a ROM.
Just a note: you don't need Gparted for ext partition. You can either format your entire card with CWM, or you can use free partition manager EASUS Partition Master Home to create ext3 partition and then convert it with alignement script from coolexe. It certainly saves time.

Hi everybody,
got the same problem as the person who started this thread with the memory issues. Done everything except install a custom rom, which I am about to do.
(note: currently 0n 2.3.3)
Currently have CM 7.1 downloaded on computer and going to install....BUT every instruction i see requires me to have rom manager/ clockworkmod recovery. HOWEVER, I can't install these because ''this app can't be installed in your country''. unfortunately used to this.
So does anyone by chance have any links to instructions or have instructions of how I can install this without downloading any apps, hopefully an idiot proof version.(Not worried about saving a recovery etc....phone is basically blank.)
Also would CM 7.1 be a good start?? Is there any easier rom to install that still has the apps2sd feature which is the primary point of doing all this( maybe miui).
Thanks in advance for any help.
Regards,
rkdeane

Hi guys.
Well I managed to get root access to my phone which wasn't really hard. And I managed to s-off and backup my files successfully. Now I'd like to deal with the internal memory issue. The question I want to ask you is this one.
If I create 2 partitions with gparted, one fat32 and second ext4 (around 2 gb's), will the ext4 one be considered as internal memory too ?
Then I'd like to install a custom ROM. So the second question is, can all ROM's the internal memory that way. I mean the custom part from the SD card ?
If something is unclear just ask, cause English is not my primary language.
Thanks in advance.
It should be that every ROM has it's own requirements for doing that.
So not every ROM can use approximately 2 GB for internal memory ?
That's what you're saying ?
Yes, for example I use 3GB on my SuperNova ROM, but recommended is 2GB so now I am trying to repair that. If you get me.
Kapiras? xD

Euh, if you ask me I would say it's part of internal memory (when you remove it the apps on ext4 don't work anymore) but i'm not a dev so not sure though
you can see it as an extension to your internal storage capacity..
next, most of the systems to use your ext4 are already included in roms (A2SD, D2EXT) so you don't have to worry about that, they recognise the partition themselves
the only thing you should be aware of is that you pick the right HBoot (don't flash CM7 HBOOT A2SD on a STOCK HBOOT A2SD)
this is normally explained in most ROM posts but i guess with a 2GB part you should be fine for A LOT of different ROMs
extra: there is a nice pic near the end of THIS post what is shifted to the ext partition when you use a certain method
grtz
So like with an app A2SD when not rooted, you can move apps to SD, but when you remove it, part's of it remain in the memory on the SD card.
The link you gave me is for "AD2SDX Special Edition for Sebastiaan15 RunnyMede Desire ROM", exactly what I want to install.
So first I create partitions with gparted. Fully wipe my sd card.
Flash the rom, then flash that AD2SDX zip file.
And it should work fine ?
Thanks for answering mate.

well, with the last version of sebastian15 for CM7 there's no need to flash the AD2SDX zip file, now it comes as an option during install (you'll see )
thus, first you make 2 partitions 1 ext4 of min 1024MB (mine is that size but you can do more if you'd like) an the rest of the sdcard is fat32 .. (mine: 7GB)
then download the right rom (check HBOOT, i have CM7R2 so i can install AIO v1), with Hboot its version 5.3 and you still have to flash the AD2SDX zip if you want it (A2SD is good enough for me )
oh right, don't forget a full wipe
grtz

An external partition has nothing to do with hboot.
The only worse thing than people not helping are people helping wrong. This thread is a failure on so many levels that human vocabulary just can't cut it.
Then why don't you help me, or just point me in a right direction ?
Thanks for the answers.
Because information you seeks are essential to know before you attempt to root.
FYI, I have successfully rooted my phone.
And I have managed to install the desired ROM.
And one more question.
I have managed to make 2 partitions.
Fat32 (5,5 gb) and ext4 (2,2 gb), yet the phone recognizes only 5.5 as the SD memory. And the 2,2 are not usable ATM.
What should I do ?
Reading your last comment I can't imagine how could you possibly root it successfully on your own.
GTFO of my thread.
Zealotic, terepin is right in a way. You show no understanding of the ext partition, or flashing, or ROMs. It will never show up. Because it is a separate partition. You'll only ever see the fat32 partition in your phone under sd storage. You need to do some research before you attempt any of this.

Research...
A LOT of research. And don't worry, that "Search" button doesn't bite.
At least not often...
No one said that he's not right. He's just acting like he's a god or something.
I'm just a newbie. And guess what. I managed to get 1.5 gb internal storage too.
Lock the thread please.
So in the end you didn't even need to open the thread?
