[Q] Need more space

I know there are threads crying about needing more space yada, yada, etc... I have read a lot of threads, but none really give a simple solution. And go ahead and flame away.. But I have rooted my phone, it was a miracle that I accomplished this. At least when I was with WinMobile and the TP2 they has simple step by step instructions on how to unlock and flash a new rom. I have the android 2.1 and always having to uninstall an app to install another because of the STUPID space limitations and the fact that I cannot install programs on my 16gb microSDHC card is making it a real pain. I should have just traded it for a 1gb card. What good is all that space I can't use? Can someone (in between flames) please direct me to a step by step method to fix this problem? I found one for the 2.2, but not 2.1.
These are the only steps I know right now that can let me store all the apps I want on a SD card and have plenty of room.
1) Sell HTC Desire
2) Buy HTC Touch Pro 2
3) Install 16gb card from the sold Desire
4) Install all the programs I want.
Simple, but right now I am regretting having sold my TP2. I like the speed of the Desire, the .1 bigger screen, But hate the limited space. So to make this thread a understandable question, here it is:
1) Can someone give me step by step instructions to let me use my SD card to make more room?
2) And can it be done with no flames?

Tried this, For GSM phones only. Mine is CDMA.

for beginners, just move all apps to sd-card. go to settings, applications, select the app, select "move to sd card"
don't do that for widgets and live wallpapers, as they wont work anymore
for pro's: use apps2sd/a2sd and never run in storage space limitations again.

Don't have that option to "move to sd card" I think that came with 2.2, I have 2.1 on my Desire.

Is there any reason why you still have 2.1? If you are rooted you can just flash a 2.2 rom with A2SD+, this will allow you to install the apps on your SD card.
In this thread you can chose a rom you like with A2SD+, instructions on flashing should be in the matching rom thread, just make sure that before flashing the rom, you have to partition your SD card with a ext3 partition.
To partition you SD card either use Rom Manager or Gparted (Linux software)
If you use Rom Manager you need the clockworkmod recovery image, this can be installed by using Unrevoked. Once you have the clockworkmod install, download Rom Manager from the market, in Rom Manager chose partition SD card and set ext to 512Mb and 0Mb for swap.
If this gives a /!\ in recovery you have to toggle signature verification(in recovery) under 'install zip from sd card' and try again.
Edit: don't forget partitioning your sd card will wipe everything on it

Hmmm I checked out the CDMA Roms there and all have something that isn't working. MMS is broken on all 4, WiFi out on some, bluetooth on another.

I have Rom manager installed, used Unevoked3 on it already. So basically I guess I have to wait till USCC releases 2.2 (Suppose to by the end of this month), or someone comes out with a CDMA Rom that works 100%.

after you root use rom manager to partition your sd card, beware this will erase all your data and then install the open desire rom for us cdma i hope this helps,
iv tried alot roms, but open desire to is the best.

I will try open desire. Hopefully I am doing this right. What is this about the radio? Do I have to change that too?

Ok, but only 512mb? I have a 16gb card with plenty of room to spare. Or is 512Mb a fixed thing? 0mb for swap? Is this so the Desire automatically loads it somewhere else? Or is making it 0mb means it will expand if necessary?

512mb is the max rom manager can do, i have a 1.5gb ext partiton, swap isnt needed as the desire has ample ram, also sd speed are to slow for it to be useable anyway

You can do as much as you like, but i think 512 is max via Rom Manager.
you don't need to flash a new radio (thanks heavymetalmage) and don't forget before flashing the new rom, do a nandroid backup from your current rom, either via Rom Manager or recovery

CM6 is fully working on the Desire, including MMS. You can find it on forum.cyanogenmod.com and go to the CDMA Desire forum. This post has a lot of great info, especially on installing darktremor's app2sd: http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/...ellular-desire/page__view__findpost__p__74880
DO NOT flash any radios. There are no updated radios for the CDMA Desire right now. Make sure you do a Nandroid and back up your apps with Titanium Backup to make the transition the smoothest.

I used the Rom manager to do the partitions like stated, but when I open explorer it doesn't look any different. Did I do something wrong?

No probably not, you can check with Quick System Info if it worked

Arrgggg now I can't copy anything to the drive, it may say I have 14gb free, but I don't have enough room!!!!

exactly that means that your trick worked and some the memory card can only be used for storing apps which u cannot see unless u connect your computer to a linux machine or get root explorer

Found the problem and fixed it. Now I have 2 partitions, one 14gb the other 488mbs.

and by the way even after all works out and you start saving your apps to the memory card, a small portion of the app is still going to be stored on the phone, but on the bright side i have 50+ apps installed and i still have 115 mb of internal memory left, before i rooted i had only about 20 mb left.

i have a new problem that i just figured :S, market wont download for some reason, i think it has something to do with rooting, it opens normally and i start browsing the market, and i download something, it says downloading but it never goes further than that, any info available about that?
hello all, i just bought an HTC desire, and i'm a complete newb when it comes to understanding the technical details of how to get the best out of my O.S
i managed to root the phone using unrevoked, because all i really wanted for now was to save apps on SD card instead of phone memory(very very small phone memory)
and i noticed that most people use an app. called APP2SD or something like that, but most of the instructions had something related to ROMS and stuff like that, and i dont really understand how all the ROMS thing work, so my question is, is there a way 2 install APP2SD directly on my unrooted with original O.S desire (2.1), and without using an SD as a goldcard or something like that( i saw a tutorial where having a goldcard was a must)

no, you will have to be rooted for proper A2SD to work, unless you upgrade to froyo, you won't have A2sd, but the froyo a2sd has too many ristrictions on which apps can be moved, it is better off to root your phone and installl a custom rom with proper A2SD....

If you're looking for a stock Sense-based ROM then look at LeeDroid. Not used it myself but a lot of people say it's good

If you want Sense and a stable running operating system, go with LeeDroid.
It has APP2SD+ integrated already.
To 'activate' it you have to modify your SD card prior. So on your currently rooted phone you have to install ROM manager from the market. If you open this app, you have an option to partition the SD card. Select it and create a 512MB EXT partition and no swap file/partition. It will reboot your phone, enter the recovery mode, format the whole SD card (so everything will be lost on it), create an EXT3 partition and then it will reboot again to Android. Nothing visible changed yet, except that you lost 500MB free space on your SD card.
After you've done that you can flash LeeDroid. It will automatically detect the EXT3 partition on your SD card and activate APP2SD+. Every app, which gets installed on the internal memory now, gets in real installed on the EXT3 partition on your SD card.
For all this you need root, which you already have.
A Goldcard is only necessary to get root on a branded Desire.

This is a general problem atm and it's not based on rooting. Google should fix the market next days (hoping that).

I had that problem yesterday, but it is fixed now, only 1/2 apps still not working.

I follow your recommendation. Run ROM manager, then go to Partition SD, 512 Kb, 0 swap, then say Ok to reboot anв format but then ... nothing is happend - phone is rebooting and look with exclamation sign and green android forever... How long should I wait for the card (8Gb) to be formated?

[Q] Rooting successful - Now what?

So... After much hesitation (purely because of worry), I finally rooted my Desire. And yes, it went without a hitch.
I do have that app which says "Superuser Permissions".
Running ClockWork mod recovery/rom 2.5.0.7 (I guess).
I have downloaded the major recommended apps for rooted devices, viz. - Root Explorer, Titanium Backup and ROM Manager.
I'd like to know what else can be done now...
My phone's memory is down to 20-ish odd Megs. Thanks to updating Adobe, Facebook, GMail, Maps, QuickOffice and installing Swype.
Is there a way to increase the memory now?
I am running FroYo 2.10.405.2 and Radio 5.09.05.30_2.

Unrevoked worked without a hitch. And there is no visible difference, either. No change at the HBOOT screen.
Which prompts me to ask: shouldn't it change from S-ON to S-OFF? Or am I getting confused with something else?
PS: apps2sd? I have a software called App 2 SD. Any difference between the two?

Unrevoked dosent unlock your bootloader, if you want to do that just search development for "alpharev" ..... apps2sd+ and the native froyo move to sd are diffrent, the biggest advantage being apps2sd+ also moves the dalvik cache (mine is over 50mb)

Root is not the same as s-off. There is a fix, which flashes a pathced hboot though, which till give you s-off. It is easy, and i prefer to have it, as et makes recovering the phone so much easier, if something happens
For a2sd there is 2 major types. The one implemented in froyo by default, which you already make use of. The app you have allows you to mave pretty much any app to the sd-card. But you will still have the dalvik-cache in the phone memory. The other type of a2sd is what i have experienced to give me plenty of space is usually implemented in most custom roms, and is activated by making an ext-partition on your sd-card(can be done through rom manager).
I prefer the last one by far, and if i should recommend a rom for you, it should be AuraxtSense, which have some great UI changes, which makes the phone look great in my opinion. If you want std. htc sense rom and look, leedroid is a decent rom, and if you want to play around with a rom without sense like the nexus one, you should try cyanogen mod or opendesire

Dunno if it is a coincidence - I've never experienced "crash" issues but earlier today, the HTC launcher crashed and I had to live w/o the home screens for a few minutes.
Any idea why this might have happened?

As regards A2SD+
I found this bit by Googling...
1) Download and install MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition.
2) Backup the contents of your SD card somewhere.
3) Connect the SD card to your PC. Make sure it shows up as a drive in My Computer.
4) Load up the Partition Wizard applicatiion.
5) Select your memory card in Partition Wizard (usually at the bottom, look for the drive letter to make sure you don't delete a hard disk). It should have a partition already, probably FAT32 formatted. You need to right click on every partition within your memory card and click Delete.
6) It won't delete right away, these tasks will be added to the panel on the left. Click Apply to make it happen. This will obviously delete everything!
7) You should now have a single chunk of unallocated memory which is the entire storage capacity of the card. Right click on this and choose 'Create'.
8) In the options set 'Create As' to 'Primary' and the file system to FAT32. Leave Cluster Size as default and ignore the drive letter.
9) Now drag the bar below from the right to set the unallocated space after this partitiion. The large FAT32 partition is where your music, videos, pictures and other files will be stored so this needs to be the largest. Make sure you have plenty of room for everything you need. The space after it is where apps will live. Around 512MB should be sufficient though if you're going to be downloading lots of games and other large programs then make it a bit bigger. Click Ok to finish.
10) Now right click and 'Create' on the remaining unallocated space, ignoring the warning message that pops up. Set to Primary again, but this time in File System select 'Ext3' (you can also use Ext2, Google it if you're interested in the differences and want to read lots of debate about which is better). Don't change the size of the partition. Click Ok.
11) Now click Apply and let it do its stuff. Once finished you should have one FAT32 partition and one Ext3. Note that the Ext3 will not be visible through Windows normally so you can't browse the files, but you can delete it and format the entire card back to FAT32 via Partition Wizard.
Important: since all your apps will be stored on the SD card instead of the phone, switching the phone on without the card inside will cause problems, you may not even be able to boot properly. And if you change cards you'll need to make sure you copy the contents of the Ext3 partition to the new card.

I guess ext2/3 terms are Linux-related terms which I am not familiar with... Do I go ahead with this way of enabling A2SD+?
(I suppose folks who rooted without using Unrevoked have another way to enable A2SD+)

Ext2/3 is a linux partition type. Android can use this, because it is of course based of linux. The best thing you can do is backup your sd card and boot into the clockwordmod recovery. From there you can partition your sd card for a2sd+.
I have a 4gb sd card with a 512 mb ext3 partition for my apps.

Yep, but you'll still see it displayed separately. Most of the app's will go to ext partition, only data will stay on internal space. I recommend Quick System Info app for checking space (and bunch of other stuff).

I have a quick question related to all this. I just rooted my desire with unrevoked 3.21 and a recovery image has been installed and it is version 2.5.0.7 of clockworkmod, I guess the latest.
Then I read other posts where people suggest to use rom manager and one of the options is "install clockworkmod" ... but if I have already installed it why should I need it again? Do ROM manager and unrevoked install in different places may be different versions of clockworkmod? then which is the one that will be used booting in recovery? Does this mean that the recovery image installed by unrevoked could be deleted somehow..? There are a lot of controversial explanations in the forums and I really dont have any idea which one to believe. Any expert could explain in easy terms? Thanks

Application Space

I have the HTC Desire on Telus.
I have Apps2SD installed, as well as Android 2.2. Currently I am unrooted but was rooted before and the same issue.
I can move some applications to the SD card, but not all of them. Also its only part of the application. I am still running out of space all the time.
Am I missing something, how do you install and run an application from the SD card?

Root. Youre using stock a2sd which doesnt fully move the app to the sd so it still uses storage space. Root and a2sd+ is what youre after

As I said in my post, I was Rooted before, still didn't install the full application and cache and everything to sd.

Well if you rooted but didn't partition your SD card for A2SD+, then you did nothing extra.
Root > partition SD card > reinstall ROM

So I did that, you can only partition the SD card as 512MB, which is clearly the same as internal memory. Also, the applications still only move some of itself over to the sd card.......

I can't use Gparted for reasons, is there another program that does the same that works with windows?

MiniTool Partition Wizard (google it) works under Windows and can create ext3 partition SD Cards. It's the only one i found that actually works, and it's free.
As an alternative, you can instal ROM Manager on your phone and use it to create ext3 partition, although it's limited to 512MB.

So I formatted my SDcard, reinstalled the rom and I still have only 114MB free, and 2GB missing from my SDCard now...WTF

Yeah, but data will be stored on ext3 partition so you will be able to install more apps. I now have 200mb of apps, and still have 40% free in internal memory.

The new Adobe Flash update increases the already ludicrous amount of space this app takes up on your phone. Was 10.96MB, now 11.29MB.
No Froyo move to SD.

Can someone please give me instructions from start to finish on how to do this because clearly I'm doing it wrong, I have 114MB internal free with fresh install.

Just install applications, you'll see they now take way less space in phone memory. You won't see that partition as available space.

And so your telling me there is no point to making a 2GB extra partition, since you can't move the apps fully over, that's what I thought, and this was a waste of time.

Instructions can be found all over the xda forums...seriously its not that hard to find..u need a rooted phone, a ROM that supports A2SD and an ext2 or ext3 partition on ur sd-card.

Okay....what ROM are you using? Stock 2.2 only supports Google's way of moving Apps (i.e. moving some of it and leaving the rest behind). Even with rooting, the stock ROM WILL NOT move everything to SD. So you need a new ROM which will support the A2SD feature.....so selecting a new ROM (even a modified version of the stock one) would be your first step. Make sure this ROM has support for A2SD or A2SD+....
Edit: If you do decide to make the "full" switch, it is recommended to S-OFF if possible.... I am fairly confident that you are following the right steps but the ROM isn't supporting it.

I am currently running your ROM, the Oxygen v2.0-RC6 Gingerbread ROM. And i dont know what S-OFF is. I am assuming a way to power off.

Have you also got a custom recovery? like ClockworkMod (can be found on the Market) or AmonRa (i don't use this).... you will need one of them if you want to enable A2SD with Oxygen ROM. This is because the oxygen ROM, by default, writes app data into the internal memory rather than into any external partitions.
Basically once you create your ext3, you have to boot into the custom recovery and flash this:

and reboot..and that should do the trick.

EDIT: Put simply, S-OFF (security off) allows you to install custom HBOOT image (such as the one I have..) which give you more space in you internal memory. Alpharev Oxygen HBOOT for example (HBOOT is the bootloader) gives around 337MB as internal space for your apps....which kinda makes EXT3 partitions unnecessary...
You have to be a bit careful with S-OFFing as newer Desire models have new security feature which makes it unsuitable to flash a new HBOOT. Read more about this here:

I recently purchased a second hand HTC Desire with Lee Droid on it. Everything was working fine.Then the phone asked my if I wanted to update? I tried to update but it would not work. Then after a while it stopped asking me to update. Then a little while later it was on a start up loop. I took out the SD card and it work but I had no apps, etc.
Now I have a serious problem with internal storage. I did a factory reset (still has the Lee Droid ROM on it) and it shows I have 92mb of internal storage...instead of up to 1GB!
So....I decided to try a few things. After doing a bit of quick reading I decided to go with the original HTC Sense software. In trying to do this I get a 140 bootloader error...so I must be using the wrong ROM?
Getting slightly more frustrated now...
I figured out I had to partition the original SD card again to get it working and that had worked but now I only have 112mb of internal storage using that Sd Card (I had purchased another one when this stopped working). So the internal storage issue still applies. And the main thing with this for me is that apps such as facebook and more will not transfer to the SD card whereas I thought I could do this before? So even to have Facebook on it and upgrade the apps with the phone gives me a 'low memeory' notification.
SO I guess my question is..
Should I just go back to HTC Sense and what ROM do I use?
or
Should I try out a different ROM?
Bear in mind I did not flash the phone originally, and while not a complete computer noob I would be quiet nervous about doing this with out some experienced help.

As a rough guide:
When you format your card you need an ext partition of say 1gb for app storage space (a2sd). The rest of the card should be fat32. This is to solve your low memory issues.
Download the custom rom of your choice to the fat32 partition of the sd card and boot the phone into recovery (volume down and power button then choose recovery). You probably have clockwork mod recovery or similar. Choose the option install zip from SD card.
Before you do this, in recovery you should wipe the dalvik cache and perform a wipe/factory reset.
Depending on the rom you use you will probably need to download and flash and a2sd script such as darktremour. This will make downloaded apps save to the ext partition automatically rather than to the phone memory.
It is worth doing as much reading up as poss before embarking on this and make sure you have enough charge in your phone when flashing or you might end up with a brick!
As for the choice of rom you need to decide if you want a rom with HTC sense included or an AOSP rom.

No matter what I do the internal memory is always lower than 120mb. It should be 512mb max right? I just did a factory reset again and it's at 77mb without any apps installed ot gmail or facebook profiles added! It these any way to fix this first off before I read more into flashing the phone with a different ROM?

Unless u use a2sd,ad2sd,int2sd or some script to move something to your sd partition,
you aren't going to have any more memory.

I think I should really go back to Sense before I do anything else or drive myself mad!
I tried another Sense ROM and it says I need to have my battery over 30pc but it's nearly fully charged!!!

But I had more internal memory before. How do I install these?
And how can I find out what Sense ROM is for my phone?

I have downloaded the app 2 sd and done the sdk thing...
but it still does not solve my internal memory issue and why was it so big before on a rooted phone? The phone is still rooted. So it should be the same? Do I need to get my SD card to count as internal storage somehow. Any links?

The guides for installing the customs roms u download r probably in the rom thread where the rom came from.
If it says ur battery is < 30% then u r using a RUU and u will need the correct one for ur phone.
Or use the 2.3 Ruu upgrade for Desire from HTC/Dev.

I think this is your best solution - CM7 which is a great rom without HTC sense.
If you have not created your ext partition yet do this:

OK...a friend did the following:
Updated my android because I was still on 2.2
Updated the root to Andreev
Installed Ice Cream Sandwich...the current BETA I think...which works fine but lately the phone freezes sometimes
First I thought you were on about memory to SD swap apps on the market so I did a bit of reading. I installed S2E but cannot or do not know how to get it working. It asked me to install something else which kept giving me a 'cannot respond' message.
I tried to install A2SDGUI as per some guide but it says that either my phone is not rooted, I do not have an EXT partition or A2sd scripts are not installed.
I tried to install EXTions on both my SD cards both manually using partition software and using ROM Manager. They both show up as having a regular FAT32 partition, and EXT one and a Linux one. They still do not work.
I have tried using various different partition softwares and my head is in a spin form them and different guides. I cannot get Gparted to work, how do I get the Image from the download or install it on my PC?
I also think I have moved my Dalvik Cache to my original SD card and not the phone tells me I have 141mb free internal memory but I get 'insufficient space' messages when trying to download apps or update them. Since I did this, even when putting on my manual SD backup from my new SD card back onto it I get messages saying 'app does not exist, even on the Play Market one. Play Market works fine on the original SD card which I think I have moved the Dalvik cache to.
There is also no nandroid backup on the new SD card as I get an error message...

Most of the scripts will show your internal storage as normal, then report a a2sd partion.
The only two that report your internal AND est partion as one block are data2sd, and the ammurlez script. Both of these are flashable with Lee Droid, but afterwards. If you did a factory reset this would restore your Lee Droid ROM but wipe your data2sd or ammurlez script. This is why before updating anything, or flashing a new zip CWM backups are your friend.
Just "factory reset" it again, this DOES NOT" change your hboot or SD partions, then flash the ammurlez or data2sd scripts. Your phone will be as before reporting 1gb internal memory.
Or......play with all the awesome ROM and script possibilities on this forum till you find a setup you love......speed versus storage, sense versus aosop versus mui etc.
Most peoples signatures list their setup, try em all!

The gparped image needs to be burned to cd rom. Just google how to do it. Then boot your pc with the cd in the drive and gparted will load up.
If you follow the guide I left earlier methodically step by step using the actual rom suggested it should work. Please note S2E only works on CM7 or CM9 roms only.
If try CM7 and don't like it you can flash something else after but at least you will have everything working and also gain an understanding of the steps you need to go through to do it.
