'Search' button sticks - 3rd phone! - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Hello all.
I really hope this hasn't been covered so I don't come off as ignorant, because I've searched up and down this forum as well as Google and cannot find anyone with the same issue.
I continue to have issues with my Epic 4G Touch and the bottom menu buttons - specifically, the 'search' button.
At random times, this button will 'stick'.
For example, I will turn my screen on, unlock the phone, and attempt to select an app. The phone will not respond.
Since I have the 'touch-vibration' setting turned on, I can then feel the phone "spazzing" out, as it will give off about 10-15 of those quick vibrates in a row, and I can see the screen attempt to pull up Google search/other search (depending upon what application is open).
In most cases when this occurs, none of the touch buttons will respond. I generally need to turn the screen off for a minute or so, and it will respond normally. Sometimes, the 'Back' button will respond, and I have to fight with it by tapping the button multiple times for the 'search' menu to stop opening.
I have a protection plan on my phone and can get it replaced at any time. To date, this is my 2nd replacement E4GT (3rd total - original+2 replacements)
Each one has had this issue, but it has not always been the reason why I replaced the phone.
original phone - got pretty bad and annoying, replaced phone.
1st replacement - blown phone call speaker, and same button issue. replaced phone.
2nd replacement - had the same issue, but I cracked the screen so it needed replaced.
3rd replacement - now having the same problem.
On the first two phones, I've done full factory resets to both, tried formatting SD card/removing SD card/a different SD Card (the SD Card and the Battery are the only things that have stayed the same between the phones).
I thought may it was 'pressure' from my case or pocket, so I have tried using it without a case (haven't used one on this replacement at all), tried with a case, no differences at all.
This is driving me insane. Combining this with terrible Sprint reception where I should have 'good' reception, its really making me hate this phone and regretting ever leaving Verizon.
Has anyone had this issue? Anyone know of anything that can be the cause?
I am probably gonna go setup to have this phone replaced tonight after work. May even try to get a new battery as well.
I am also having issues with battery life. This thing drains so quickly.
I went from 92% to 40% in about 3 hours, while leaving the phone in my pocket. No apps were 'visibly' running. I always keep wifi/BT/gps turned off unless I need to use them. Restarted the phone, it came back on at 13% battery. Restarting my phone used 27% of my battery? This is also an issue that has gotten progressively worse.

has happened to a lot of people and like gdiggy said it usually happens when in low service areas. mine got so bad i brought it in and they replaced my touch screen. so far so good. where i work it would do it constantly because of the service and it hasnt happened once today.(just had it changed on friday). so that might be your only option. good luck.

never thought about that or made the correlation. I believe it happens occasionally even when I'm at work, which I usually get full or close to full service, but definitely happens in areas where I do not get good service.
Sprint did send me an Airave device last month which has helped with the nonexistent service at my house, but it still happens there.
I really don't understand why each replacement phone works fine to start but then gets worse over time.
if this was common, I'm also really surprised that I wasn't able to find it by searching.
Blah. I like the phone but if poor service is the reason, this is just another reason why I've made a stupid mistake switching to Sprint. Just wish they were more truthful about their service areas!

CDMA galaxy nexus - unresponsive to touch

Hello everyone,
Basically went to unlock my phone today and touch screen is not responding, however the hardware buttons work fine. Now i've done some research and found other posts of people with the same problem, however their touchscreen problems seem to be fixed(temporarily, at least) with a battery pull.. mine however is still unresponsive after half a day and multiple battery pulls.
Id rather not have to send in for certified to replace an otherwise perfectly working phone.
Any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Nope, sorry forgot to say. Completely stock never unlocked or rooted.
Also i tried getting into recovery to try and do a factory reset but when i select recovery i just get the android on his back with the red triangle..
so instead i just went through the steps and unlocked the bootloader and booted up (in order to give me the factory reset without having to touch the screen)
It unlocked and booted up fine but still no response..
No new recent app installed and never had this happen before.
Mine did this after a few days of owning it, and luckily the store took it back and swapped it out with a perfectly working unit. Is yours within a few weeks of purchase?
Figured this out randomly. Remove battery cover. With phone turned on, press on the area to the to the left of the camera lens until the screen is responsive. My screen becomes unresponsive when the phone is dropped and this fixes it.

hrmm this does not seem to fix either. I also have never dropped my phone, although this seems to be worrisome if the issue is hardware related.
@ tmellen i purchased the phone from amazon and am a few days past my return date :-/
Guess ill just give them a call and hope for the best. Thanks for the ideas everyone.
(update) called amazon and they are sending me a brand new phone.
Knowing this i thought i'd try dailong's method again only this time i was quite a bit more "rough" with pressing down on that area, and it actually worked!
Ill still be taking the new phone once it gets here but for anyone who is having this problem there's a sweet spot on the left edge of the phone towards the top (looking at it with the back cover off) there should be a circle shape. press on that area really hard and it should fix.. weird
Experienced the same on my GSM version a few minutes ago. I had to call my mobile to get it to respond. After that it worked again as normal. I'll see if I get this issue again in the next few days. Hope it's just random
Had the same happen earlier to mine and I was on AOKP. I've had this happen to other phone before, shouldn't be a a cause for alarm unless it happens very frequently. Btw, next time it happens to me I'll give that left side of the camera trick a try.

So, for the past month and a half, I've been having some serious overheating issues with my E4GT, whether I have it rooted and a custom ROM flashed, or running stock. It has now gotten to the point where the phone smells..funky, near the camera on the back. Now, Sprint labels the battery as the culprit...twice now, they just give me a new battery saying the old was swollen, and that it is what was causing it to overheat. Completely ignoring that I state it smells like fried parts. Now, the batteries were all normal in appearance, mind you, not a bit swollen. No water damage either. It gets almost too hot to touch the screen at times, not dangerously, but uncomfortable. I only use the USB cable and wall adapter it came with, as well. ..Yet, battery life actually isn't terrible, go figure. This overheating happens whether I am using the crap out of my phone, or just leaving it sit idle.
Any ideas what to do from here? It makes it almost too hot to touch the screen at times, not dangerously, but uncomfortable, especially if it happens when I make a call. I only use the USB cable and wall adapter it came with, as well. I've made a habit of unplugging it when it says it's at a 100% charge, too.
I'm sick of Sprint shoving me aside every time I go there, which is three times now. So, if there are any ideas as to how I can get them to just replace the damn thing without spending 100 through insurance..lay it on me. I've searched the forums for a solution to this particular issue, no avail. Hell, if it takes purposely bricking for them to pay attention, then I'll do it, but that's on the back burner. Far far back.
I have tried all sorts of things to keep it running smoothly, I guess my main question is how to get Sprint to just replace the dang thing.

Go to a different sprint store....they're being dicks, never had that issue at any sprint store in my area. You have a fault phone and it needs to be replaced.

I had the same problem and so did my woman. Do yourself a favor and download Calkulins battery saver E4GT ROM. I don't know how but it keeps the phone cooler. Seriously. Haven't had any over heating issues since. EL29 stock kernel always causes mine to heat up. Hope this helps

Do you have insurance? You could always just brick it to the point where all ya get is the blue led of death and bring it in and tell them the thing just suddenly went off on ya and when you tried to turn it on this is what happened.
Do NOT try to damage it using water because they have these stickers inside the phone and on the battery that change colors when they come in contact with water so sprint will know, and laugh in your face.
my phone also gets very hot like in 120 range
You could send it to Samsung under warranty, and when u go to sprint make sure its a corporate service center and not a 3rd party "authorized service center". When you go in don't mention overheating at first start off with "my phone smells funny, like burning plastic and when I pick it up I notice the screen is very warm/hot to the touch and sometimes has issues with the touch responsiveness" this should get their attention away from the battery and more towards the internal issues, more than likely its the SOC that is overheating if it's hottest near the camera area of the phone

[Q] My glide is screwed after wifi download overnight

Hola, noob here with a problem.
My rogers captivate glide was behaving perfectly fine one night when I decided to download some large files over wifi. It was also plugged in for charging and I was using some app (forgot the name) to prevent my screen from turning off so I won't lose my wifi connection. I left it like that and went to sleep. Upon waking up, my phone was hotttt , the screen still on but it has faded into a greenish color with scan lines. It was unresponsive and I had to pull the battery. Ever since then, my phone would last no more than a few minutes before freezing and fading into scan lines. I thought it was a battery issue, so I got new batteries but that didn't help one bit. I even flashed the kernel and still no help. I did resets, recovery, wiped caches, took out sd card and sims, stock builts. Nothing worked. I can't connect the phone to the computer or wall charger either. The screen would instantly freeze and fades out upon plugging in the micro usb cord.
Have anyone had similar problems? Did I fried the soc? I don't think it's a problem with the screen since it was perfectly responsive the few minutes it worked. This noob needs helppp.
I've posted a video on youtube but I couldn't link to it, but if you search "captivate glide problem" you'll see a video showing the freezing problem I have. I'm from the US also, so I don't know if I could get samsung to fix it through warranty since the phone is Canadian.
Well I downloaded Modern Combat 3 and that was like about 1Gb and the screen turn off because I didn't touch it while it downloaded, and wifi kept going so I'm not sure why it didn't stay on for you

Idk about the phone so much , but i am computer technician and it sounds like you overheated it, what we might call "burned it up".
The screen symptoms you have described are a dead giveaway, especially the lines
If this was a laptop, I would be sending it off for a reflow .
Typically, the circuit board gets so hot, the solder on the ships melts enough for a tiny bit of separation. This requires a "reflow ", where specialized equipment is used to repair the solder connections.
First, you should to a factory reset , then try to do a warranty claim. (unless u have insurance from your cellular provider, then u might check with that)
*edit, sorry, I missed the warranty part the first time I read ur post*
The next option would be to check with the guys at www.mylaptopisbroke.com
Email them, ask if they concur with my diagnosis and if they can help.
I have been dealing with them for about two years and always been highly satisfied. (They are in NY, I am in TN. I have sent literally dozens of devices to them)
If none of those 3 options work out for you, start looking for a new phone.

Sorry, but I agree with the previous poster, sounds like a hardware issue. Start the warranty process, can't know if it's gonna work til you try it.
Not to try to close the barn door after the horses have bolted, but in case you get into a similar situation with your new phone, there's an easier and safer way. When you're in the WiFi screen hit the menu button and under advanced settings there is the option to keep WiFi on during sleep. Also, as you have found out, be careful with any apps that directly control the hardware.
Had a very similar scenario as the OP described. Went to bed with it plugged in and streaming DI FM in high quality, woke up in the middle of the night by burning myself on the metal back plate. Unplugged it and pulled the battery, when I woke up in the morning after a rather worrisome night sleep I discovered my WIFI would not work unless I was within a foot of the router otherwise it wouldn't get any signal. I assumed the devices internals were damaged and that is what caused the problem, glad to know someone else aside from me has had a similar issue. Best bet would be trying to get a replacement through the warranty unless you have some type of protection plan through your carrier.
I see, thanks guys for the inputs. I had a feeling it's a goner. I can't do the warranty since it's rogers and I'm from the U.S.; bought it off Newegg unlocked without a warranty. So I guess I'm screwed.

I've contacted mylaptopisbroke and they told me that phone repairs have been discontinued until midwinter 2013.
Is there anywhere I could buy a new soc??

I've heard of reflowing oneself by putting it in the oven at 550 degrees for 10 minutes or something. FWIW.
Not sure I'd want to do it myself, not having better information, but perhaps there's something out there some googling will reveal.
I've look at the sites, no captivate glide stuff. Guess captivate glide is not that popular a model. I've read about reflowing, but too chicken to try. I did took took the phone apart but saw that the LED is on the board itself and couldn't be detached; it's housed in some soft rubber feely box. I had a feeling it would melt in the oven.

[Q] Random reboot and hang

Hey all! I've had my T989 for about half a year now, and since I've gotten it, it's had this strange issue that has persisted across multiple complete hardware and software swaps. I'm pretty convinced I won't be free of it until I can afford to upgrade, but I figured I'd post here since NOTHING seems to work, and see if anyone can come up with something.
To start off, I got the device from Koodo, as they had a great deal on it that allowed me to get it cheap. Ever since the first device, it's occasionally rebooted for seemingly no reason, and hung after the initial boot screen. In order to reset it, I have to hold the power button for a good 10 seconds, causing it to fully reboot again after two short vibrates, following which it will boot up normally.
I initially had a broken speaker, so I took it back and had it replaced, only for the second device to have the same issue. I took that back, and temporarily tried a few other carriers with different phones, but came back to Koodo because I love the T989 too much for the price.
This third phone still had the issue, so I took it back and called Koodo's support line. They fedexed me a new model, which STILL had the same issue.
That would make me think it's a software issue, and a friend suggested that perhaps I had a bad root, but after the phone finally slowed down to near-unusability on Jedi Knight 6, I flashed a few stock ROMs back onto it, until finding one that returned it to normal speed.
I've re-rooted and tried multiple ROMS, with no success. The issue seems to persist across hardware and software. The only thing that seems to be common among them all is that I had a ghost armor screen protector applied to them all. I've since heard that ghost armor was using what was basically soapy water to clean the phone before applying the protector, and that this could have entered the phone and caused some kind of problem.
It seems to happen far more frequently when the phone is in my pocket, which leads me to think that it may have something to do with the power button, and perhaps the moisture or something else causing partial pressure on the button to trigger an incorrect reboot. This seems like a long shot to me, but it's the only commonality I can find.
I should note that I have seen the phone do this randomly while sitting on the desk in front of me after I set it down, so it may be that turning the screen off manually causes the same incorrect reboot issue, or it could be that I simply have some kind of magnetic aura that is insistent on trolling me.

[Q] Tab Pro 12.2: Screen and Button Issues

I just got this tablet (to replace the garbage SGH-I467) a few days ago (Thu., May 15th). For the first couple of days it worked like a dream. However, the last 4 nights/3 days, I have been encountering some strange issues. What I will do here is describe the issues I've been having, what I have done in attempts to fix them, list some of the things I think may have caused it, and include any additional info/questions.
Before all that though, I would like to mention that I am not a developer, but I am a bit 'tech savvy' and am more familiar with/knowledgeable of technology than the average user. Also, I have spoken with Samsung tech support and even had the support guy access my Tab Pro 12.2 remotely (I will explain what I learned from that below). So, without further ado (I apologize in advance for the long winded nature of this post, but I want detailed):
The Issues:
1) Screen "flickering"—By flickering I mean that it is shutting off and turning on rather rapidly and sporadically, though inconsistently.
I first encountered the problem 3 days ago (the 18th).
Four nights ago (the 17th), before going to bed, I plugged the device into the same outlet I have used for all my mobile devices, when I woke up (on the 18th) the screen was doing exactly what I described. I hit the home button a few times and it stopped.
That night (the 18th) I plugged it back in to the usual spot before going to bed. The next morning (yesterday, the 19th), the screen was "flickering" again. I tried to press the home key a few times, as well as both the soft keys, nothing. In between "flickers" you can see the lock screen, where I have to enter a pin, but even while visible I can't type anything. So this time, to try to solve the problem, I held the power button + volume up to get to recovery and wiped the cache partition, rebooted the device, and viola, it worked again. Thinking that I may have to factory reset the device if the problem persists, I used Kies to backup all my data. I used the tablet the rest of the day, even plugged it in (in a different outlet than the one next to my bed) for a while and had no issues.
Last night (the 19th) I did pretty much the same thing, but this time, thinking that it might be an issue with the device getting too much power (the Quick Start Guide says: "Note: Connecting the travel adapter improperly may cause serious damage to the device."), I used a travel adapter from one of my other, USB 2.0 devices (the only difference between the adapters is the output: 2.0 = 5.0V—2.0A vs. 3.0 = 5.3V—2.0A, and output was specifically what I was concerned with). This morning (the 20th) the problem has returned, but now includes my second issue: the hard home button and both soft keys, back and recent apps, no longer function. So I immediately tried to wipe the cache partition and reboot, but this time it didn't work. Thankfully I had anticipated this yesterday and had that Kies backup, so I wiped the entire device back to factory settings. But alas, it was unsuccessful and the problem persists, including the loss of button functionality, with the exception of the power and volume buttons.
It is important to note that when I first got the Tab Pro 12.2 and set up the lock screen, I used the option that delays the actual locking of the device 10 minutes after screen timeout, but set it so that if I lock the screen with the power button it ISN'T delayed and immediately locks. That being said, a couple of times when the "flickering" stopped long enough to momentarily use the device, I was able to enter my pin and unlock. But when the screen starts flickering again, it locks the device, so the power button must be affected as well. Though since the first factory reset of the device, I haven't set up a pin. I have done several factory resets and none of them have worked. The best result has simply been limited (no back, recent apps or home key) and momentary functionality. I tried using Kies to do emergency firmware recovery, but every time I click the option it disconnects the device.
When Samsung tech support remotely accessed by device (I used one of the momentary functionality windows to download the required application) the agent was able to utilized soft and home key functionality, even though I couldn't. This tells me that it was hardware related, not related to UI/software.
So there are a couple of things I think may have caused/contributed to the problem:
The first, which I vaguely touched on above, is the power issue. Perhaps I have shorted the device out somehow. The outlet I use to charge things while I'm sleeping is on the wall behind my bed, so I have to use a common extension cord, one that has 3 outlets at the end. I have a light plugged into that and in the past have charged both my SGH-I467 (AT&T Note 8.0) and my SGH-I747 (AT&T S4 Active) with that cord and outlet. That is the only place I have charged the SM-T900 overnight, but none of the other power sources I have used have caused these issues.
The second possibility is a virus some sort. I have never used the Samsung app store on any of my other devices, but in order to update the Hancom Office suite I had to. Since I had an enjoyable time using it to that end, I decided to see what else I could find on Samsung's store. I downloaded a couple of things (the "Official Captain America game" and a couple wallpaper/theme apps) and was looking around the store to see if there was anything else I wanted to download. I found several apps that had reviews claiming they were trojans, so I immediately checked the reviews for the apps I had downloaded, but none of them had similar reviews. However, that does not mean they didn't have viruses.
So, what do the resident Android gurus of XDA think about these issues?
I tried searching all over the forums and elsewhere online for people having the same issues, but couldn't find anything. Have any of you ever encountered something similar to this?
Until recently, I hadn't ever heard of anyone getting a virus on an Android device. Are they common? What is the nature of Android viruses?
If these issues do have something to do with overcharging/shorting the device, how can I mitigate that problem? Tonight when I charge the tablet, instead of using the USB 3.0 charging cable, I am going to try just using the 2.0 cable. As I understand it, that can be done by simply plugging it into the right side of the port. Hopefully that will stop exacerbating the problem.
Again, I apologize for such a long winded post. I would like to thank you all in advance. If ever I have problems with an Android, you guys are the ones to ask!
*UPDATE* Before I started typing this I was attempting to run the Kies 'Firmware Upgrade and Initialization', as opposed to 'Emergency Firmware Recovery', to see if that too would disconnect the device. Unfortunately it said that my device needed to be charged first. So I shut it down and plugged it into a surge protected strip and began typing this post. Occasionally I would go over an check the charge. While it was shut down and charging I was able to use the home key to bring up the green battery. Once the charge looked like it was about 75% complete I turned it back on and lo and behold, the "flickering" issue looks resolved and so does the button issue. I can go back, enter the recent apps and task manager, and use the home key functions. For how long this will last, however, is unknown. I guess we'll see in the morning. I'll post what happens tomorrow.
What kind of case are you using? Some users have seen issues with some cases that use magnets for auto-sleep-wake. When the front of the cover is flipped back behind the tablet, the magnets seem to activate the auto-sleep feature

I am not using a case or cover at all...
same issues here
Sounds exactly as the same issue I have had the last week. I have done several factory resets triad to avoid installing as many applications as I had prior the factory reset (to see If it was an app causing the issue). No solution yet but I will try your way with kies described above. I have a tab pro 8.4.

I am no guru, but it sounds like a loose connection. Maybe it is affected by temperature. Try it on a (not too) hot water bottle or on freezer packs.

It's not overheating. It can get warm, but it's never gotten hot. And I've had other devices that have seriously overheated and still functioned, albeit slowly.
**UPDATE**
After I got it working the night I originally posted I let it fully charge (it's important to note that I got it up to about 75% while it was off; green battery the only thing on the screen, and I had home button functionality), then disconnected it and disabled all the radios, put it in power saving and left it over night without power. Doing that I was able to use it all day yesterday. But while I was full-charging it, after it reached 100%, I noticed that it started acting up almost immediately. The sound was on and kept making the lock screen sound (that's how I noticed it from across the room). So it is tied to the power/lock key. But disconnecting it before it could get out of control mitigated the problem. Last night I was going to try to charge it over night with USB 2.0, but I fell asleep before changing the cable out, so it charged on 3.0 all night and is back in poor repair. I'm currently trying to full charge it while off to see if that gives me functionality again.
Either way, each time I fix it the solution becomes more difficult/timely than the previous one. It's clearly not getting better, so I'm going to have to send it in to repairs.

Sorta sounds like a screen grounding problem. I had a nexus seven with this issue and the charger seemed to really make it act up. Needless to say I gave that to my wife and bought this. If the digitizer is not grounded properly it will act up.
Turning on developer settings and set it to show touches on screen. See if when charging the screen registers more touches than you are doing.

Damn! That's an outstanding idea! The only downside is that last night I sent the tablet to Samsung's repair department, so I can't test that out. But once I get it back, if the problem persists I will definitely be doing that first. Thanks for the advice dottat.

Hey dude, check out dottat's reply. He's got a really good idea that may shed some light on the source of the problem. Unfortunately, I can't try it out. If you do it, let me know how it goes. Maybe you can take some screenshots? Either way, hopefully you can get something out of it.
