well, I got brave and rooted my S3, and was looking to go further by trying a rom.
This is my first smartphone, so I don't have a lot of experience with different models, but I like touchwiz, and enjoy S voice and search google via voice to text. Actually, there is not a lot about this phone that I don't like. That said, I always believe a product can be made better.
I read a post somewhere a few days ago where someone commented that they had tried a variety of roms, but ended up going back to a modified sammy rom because Cyanogen and AOKP roms removed all of the stuff that made his S3 special. He commented that it made it feel like a 2 year old Nexus. Not having tried any of these roms, I cannot vouch for the truth in this, but it makes sense, and I too want my S3 to be "special... plus"
Some of the things I'm looking for in a rom are
keeping s voice
a toggle mod
some debloating
Beats audio, or similar
I would like a translucent status bar (is that what is called?) .. the thing you pull down from the homescreen
Free GS3 might be an option, but its a T mobile port, and I'm not sure about it.
any recommendations are certainly welcome.
Thanks...

Welcome to android!
Before a mod shuts this down because these types of threads don't get to stay and your in the wrong section as well. I will tell your best bet is to read, read some more and then try some out. There a lot of great roms but your the only one who will know if its right for you.
Good luck!

thanks. My bad, whats the right section?
noobs like me can't post in the developers forums
BTW, I've been reading, and reading and reading some more, but recommendations are always welcome.
I did run across a similar thread, but of course it was a general android question, not specific to At&t, which is what I have.
This is very simple if you want a reliable non bug all features working rom... just stay with stock... all other roms are not perfect, they will give you some but it will also lack on something, I have try them all and always come back to stock.

Thanks, I had considered that possibility, but thought I would ask.
Q&A Should be where questions go. I would also say there are many solid stable roms. Read, read and try as many as you want. All phones are not 100% the same and your apps and setups can effect how it runs.
Good luck

There are multiple threads in this (General) section and the Q&A section. Please search and read those threads for opinions, options, etc. Moreover ROMs are a personal choice, and are subjective to user experience. I'd suggest making a nandroid backup, flash a ROM, if you don't like it, restore your backup and try another.
Thread Closed.
P.S. Welcome to Android and XDA.

Hi,
Messed around with Cyanogen 9 and 10 but not a fan of it.
Thinkinkg of just flashing the original Samsung stock ROM but people told me there are ROM's out there that are a deviation of the stock ROM but have a few tweaks, not sure if this actually exists or not. (I'm a noob to rooting).
Original Camera app
Original Video player app
S-Voice
NO Rogers bloatware
No Samsung bloatware (besides S-Voice, which I don't consider bloatware)
I know these are Samsung / TouchWiz features so I am not sure if it's possible to find a ROM that has this.
Basically I was pretty happy with my GS3 before I rooted it. The only thing I hated was the carrier/samsung bloatware bogging down system resources. I'd rather keep it on (basically) the stock ROM for now if it means retaining the original TouchWiz video/camera/s-voice apps.
Any idea if this is possible?

Check out the Development Forum. Pick and choose
the development forum and the lingo used in there is bloody daunting to me,
anything you'd recommend beyond just me looking through massive threads for 50 different "stock" ROMs?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1903437
This will get you up to speed on the lingo.
kind of funny how I've already been given 3 suggestions for ROM's in the development forum
yet someone in there has chastised me for daring to post this question in the development forum

Get used to it. Unfortunately for every positive response you get, you get another 9 that complain about something you're doing wrong. Just ignore those posts. Eventually one of the good people from this forum will help you out.

Dude have you tried an S Voice and Google Now alternative that JUST came out?
It's called Maluuba .
I just installed it and best of all it is FREE!
They have a widget for fast access and I LOVE IT!
Absolutely amazing, easy to use, intelligent, very seamless and beautiful.
Give it a shot. I know you WON'T BE disappointed!
I just use the stock ROM nothing custom, the only thing I did was freeze the Bloatware apps with Titanium Backup... I am a very happy camper
I'm really liking Triune II by Nunhugger. If you stick with The Father theme, its stock looking. Its TW based and rock solid.

It is usually because questions like this don't belong in the Development section. Also "Best ROM" threads are generally frowned upon, but this on seems like it might have some validation and it isn't turning into a pissing contest. I'll keep this one open for now as long as it doesn't stray too far.

I like using either kyanROM 1.5 or Wanamlite 1.3. Both stock, no bloat.
Please excuse my ignorance. I am looking to root my phone soon & flash a new rom. I have previously done this about 3x with my Cappy so I'm only a semi-noob. Anyhow I'm looking for input as far as which rom to use. On my wish list is full sPen support & multi-view (all apps not just the att ones), followed by good battery life & maybe the dropbox thing. Don't want to lose lte support our any of that. I am thinking it's between clean rom & Jedi. Please send me your input. Thanks!

All of the ROMs on here have full compliment of features your looking for. Ya just gotta try them all till ya find what suits your individual needs
Sent from my SGH-I317 using xda premium
Jedi and CleanRom both come highly recommended. As you try each rom, you will find quirks with each development. Personally, the [ROM][12/5][N7105XXDLK7 4.1.2] International Stock has be the best rom for my needs. Strangely, the main problem I have with that ROM is that the Adobe Flash doesn't work. Otherwise it's been great.
Easy fix with flash just google jelly bean flash and will lead u to a post on here where u download it straight to the phone but make sure u have unknown sources checked

We have a lot of great developers on here. Like others have said, read the comments on specific roms and just try them out for yourself.
Why don't you TRY both then decide which one you want to use as your main Rom. Any thread like this is very opinionated and everyone has their own taste for things and discredit certain devs because they don't have this or that in their roms. I'd say just try a few different ones because you may not even end up with Jedi or CleanRom at then end of the day.
I used to be the same type of user...trying to ask someone what's the "BEST" rom to use. After flashing and trying several ROMs on my own, I'd agree with the others and say that try them out for yourself. You will have a different experience from the next person. So far the GN2 ROMs I have tried have been very stable so I'd say it comes down to which one you like better.
Sounds good. I'm really not that picky except I want those few items mentioned above. The minor details I don't care much about. Lol Of course I read these 'hello I've bricked my phone' threads and they scare me a tiny bit. But I know as long as I stick with the proven winners specifically for att version I should be fine. Just have to find the time to do it all. Can anyone help me with that? Lmao
Sent from my wet dream phone (GN2)
I've tried both and they are both very good. They are different types of Roms so read on the features for each and make a decision. You can't go wrong either way.
Just flashed Jedi X6 and it seems very good i'll post more once i've run it longer
CR with the latest Perseus kernel is very nice. Straightforward and easy install. Good developer communication. I recommend it!

Ok so here we go. There are a whole lot of fantastic ROMS out there. But how come none have the whole package. I've seen roms out there with multiview; some with page buddy; some with the Note 2 keyboard, etc. But none with them all.
Is this hard to do. If i could learn how to develop roms i sure would make this. Maybe this is impossible, maybe not.
So here is the challenge: (and its probably not a challange)
We have MB1 odexed and deodexed. That can be our base. after that we can implemnt a number of tested and working mods, to include, but not limited to the ones outlined above. After that we can use morphology or whatever app we want to theme and customize this rom. Not everyone likes the Note 2 keyboard or multiview. But some of us like them all. Or maybe just want them just because we can have them.
So what do you think. Please, if you read this leave a response telling what you would love to have in your rom. Maybe we can get a rom call something like your rom that all the devs can contribute to based on this thread.
THANKS:laugh:

correct you are and i just noticed the spelling. sorry.
However correct as you are. Im gonna give you a scenario:
I am on a rom now that has the note 2 keyboard, great battery life, and overall is a great rom. But i tried to flash the multiview mod and it broke the contacts and dialer. The mod worked but after i installed i couldnt dial a number to call out. Dirty flased the rom and all is well now, but no multiview.
I was on another rom. It had multiview and page buddy, but no note 2 keyboard. Now when i flashed the note 2 keyboard mod, it didnt work. The mod seemed to work for international only, not ours.
I am something like a noob although ive been flashing since the first galaxy s1 and i have had all three since then and other galaxy variants. I just think this would be a fun project for us ALL to work on and it would be something that wouldnt end.
Sorry if i offended you with my spelling and/or my challEnge.

you know what guys... nevermind. Everyone making me feel stupid. I was just thinking that it would be a way to incorporate all the WORKING mods in one place as opposed to all over xda. Instead i get a bunch of people making me feel stupid. I found zips for the note 2 keyboard but none of them worked for the us version. Thanks though for the link to the one that came out last week.
I remember when i first signed up for xda i read somewhere that everyone in the forum is friendly.
Anyway ill leave the thread up for a few hours then ill take it down. I supposed i offended quite a few people with my stupid idea.

It's not that it's a stupid idea, just it's been asked a million times before. What happens is that devs bust there butts for free to give us roms. It's not easy being a dev. I'm not a dev by any means but I know it's not easy.
p.s. Don't say you don't know anything about being a dev, send out a challenge then use words like "we" and "our" when you would have no actual dev help.

Don't worry about it, man. Truth is, many people on xda are no talent assholes that get their jollies by berating others. I'm not sure why its the case.
I think this is a good idea but I also agree with strongsteve, perhaps you could try to build it yourself. I have thought to myself, if only I could have a ROM with x, y and z it would be perfect. However, I'm far too busy to learn coding and ROM building right now so I make do with what's available.
I know how you feel about the people around here, I asked a simple question about a certain mod in a ROM thread and was belittled and basically ostracized from that specific community. I don't let it bother me after all, at the end of the day its just an internet forum about phones.

This.... Is the reason that people get so irritated here. This isnt a solution to the issue the person posted... A proper response isnt just telling the op to learn to code. You are on a forum that you are obviously quite active on, providing helpful responses seem to be the common thing to do.
I understand where the op is coming from, and i have ran into this issue many times with many different roms across many phones. Heres my solution to you. Rather then use your base rom as a stock unodexed rom. Would i seem to find to be the best workaround would be to use CM as your base. You are far more likely to have the CM Team push out a version of CM to which ever device you are using. From there you can request certain features and mods tailored to CM. You can then create a supplemental mod section for that version of CM, similar to how we have a morphology section, and have a list of flashables. If you are decent enough you can even create a kitchen or make an updater just for cm that flashes these mods. From there you can create individual titanium backups and re-flash those backups each time you update your CM version.
Your issue that you have with certain roms only being tailored to certain people isnt new. This is the "advantage" that apple fanboys seem to boast about is how all the Iphones can download Any program that anyother stock Iphone has. They claim Fragmentation i call it tailored preferencing. I personally find the note keyboard bulky and i hate it, i am true to swype as im more familiar with it so regardless the rom im on i always just install my swype APK.
I figure this would help out a bit, although i provided no clear solution other then say its a bit easier to tailor a mod to a rom then a rom to a mod.

Tbo having a thread dedicated to mods is a great idea that way it would be easier to find mods your looking for it would also help clean up all the thread in the development section as well which make it more focus on roms. Now about search I'm sure a lot of the people on this board use xda from the app which has been a known fact for a very long time to be not very useful. Op great post love the idea.
I love the 90s. Good times.
Now, a thread with all the mods wouldnt be helpful.... HOWEVER a wiki page that lists that particular rom and all the mods that are availible to it that links back into the thread for each mod actually sounds like a viable solution...

It's cool man, don't feel bad.
The thing is, everyone's kind of bought into this dev-worship thing and interrupting their circlejerk is definitely a no-no. Unfortunately, it has become a common position to hold that you should shut up, take what you're given, and if you're not happy, learn to do it yourself. This is a fine position when it comes to literally complaining or bashing devs for not implementing 'X' feature...But it has been taken to an extreme by some devs, and most users, that any asking for features be met with harsh criticism and intolerance. Fall in line, take what you're given.
Of course, this is an absurd position to take, one they don't accept in any other facet of their life.
What no one seems to have realized is that, aside from the use of the world challenge, your post wasn't at all contentious. I apologize, on behalf of those of us who are still willing to think, for how the people in this thread have treated you.
As an aside, a genuine thank you to the devs who don't take any chance to jump down the throat of a user who is simply asking for specific features in a rom.
To actually answer the OP...
The closest you would get be to compile the flashable zips of all the features you like for yourself
Put the Note 2 keyboard, multiview, and any other mod that you want into a zip and just have it handy for yourself, thats the best you can do short of porting the remaining stuff over haha
As things go popping up, which I'm sure they will, you can go on adding them to your zip
Sitting on the stock rom at the moment but have been looking around to find a custom rom.
What seems to be the most favored ROM at the moment?
Also is the Camera and all it's features? Panaramic photos, beauty face etc. grouped with the stock rom would or have the other developers been able to implement the camera in their rom?
Wicked ROM.

Threads asking about "which is the best rom" are generally prohibited on XDA because there is no answer.
Only YOU can decide which is the best ROM for YOU. Features that make a rom great for me might be irrelevant to you. Even if we both value the same features it then depends on how you and I use them differently. And finally it just cones down to taste.
You have to try different ones out and decide for yourself.

Which is why I asked which seems to be the most favored. I wanted to get a feel what everyone else seems to be using without having to flash 3 different roms to find something decent.
The only reason I ask this as there seems to be a ton of roms out there.

Which is another way of asking "which is best". Agsin, these kinds of threads are not generally permitted on xda.
You need to try roms yourself to find out what is right for you.
Try a touchwiw rom then an aosp rom. See which overall platform you like more. That will cut down on the number left to decide from. Then read up on the available features in roms of the platform you like to narrow it down more.
No one can tell you what the best option is. But these threads do tend to accumulate on xda. There are already 2 of them today.

Only YOU can decide which is the best ROM for YOU. Features that make a rom great for me might be irrelevant to you. Even if we both value the same features it then depends on how you and I use them differently. And finally it just cones down to taste.
You have to try different ones out and decide for yourself.

Not sure why you are getting on my case for asking this question, I don't have a bunch of time to sit down and flash rom after rom which is why this thread was created.
I wanted to see what a majority of people were using to get a feel from there.
Again so I don't have to flash a bunch of roms.
It's the same concept of reading a review over phones, I want to see what phones people were using so I don't have to go buy phone after phone to find something I like.
I'm not ASKING people to tell me what rom to get, again I asked to see what they were using so I could look up the rom they were using and go from there.

No one is getting on your case. Just explaining that these kinds of threads usually end up locked on xda and why "the most popular" rom isn't going to always be the best rom for you.
I told you how to narrow it down dramatically to a couple of roms to choose from so you don't have to sort through all 20 or so.
To answer you initial question though, the most popular rom on the s4 by a HUGE margin is the stock rom. Number 2 in overall popularity is the stock rom with root installed and bloat removed.
If you don't have time to test different roms, then my honest advice to you is to stick with either stock or stock with root because any use of custom roms takes up a lot of time. All the little settings that make a custom rom different from a stock rom take hours and hours and hours of fiddling with to find the perfect set up for your use. And if you ignore those settings options you may as well just stick with stock anyway. Then there are the inherent glitches that come with any custom rom, usually minor, but still requiring attention. And then the regular updates to fix those glitches or to add new features and improvements. Its all very time consuming. So if you don't have the time to test custom roms, you probably won't have the time to maintain one either. This is absolute honesty about this hobby for you.

Just FYI, asking about which Roms you should go with will be a quick road to nowhere. Just head to the development sections, read the chagelogs for what you may want, download, flash and test.

I did that and tried most of them ... before with my old S4
So that's why I'm posting here, to see what more experience ppl might thing that a more reliable rom would be (or setup)
thanks
That is kinda different for everyone though and how they use thier device
Also how you need to try different roms for yourself.
what is good for me might not be good for you.
If you have MK2 on it already might be the only concern.
If you are only try 4.3 or higer roms from my understanding.
And you will have knox on the phone then and no way to get rid of it.

Threads asking which roms are the best are not allowed.
Reasking which roms are the best after it's been explained that you shouldn't ask that isn't allowed.
Then asking for answers to questions that have been answered so many hundreds of times in so much unblievable depth that ANY search at all would produce multiple pages of results explaining everything is frowned upon.
Please please please search before posting in the future, especially before starting new threads.
Experience with ROM's does not matter at all in relation to which rom is the best. Only YOU can decide what rom is best for YOU. No one else can help with that process. The most experiences guy in the world might want a really simpel ROM. The biggest novice might want 8 bagillion settings to play with. Or vice versa. This is why such threads are not permitted on XDA.
I promise you that if you search first, and read multiple posts about a subject rather than ask for the answers to be spoonfed to you, that you will learn about this stuff VERY FAST. You will no longer be a novice and will be the one answering someone else's questions in pretty quick time. It's the ONLY way to learn this stuff. It cannot be learned by having the answered handed to you. It's reading posts and seeing how different variations of things have different outcomes that will quickly make you pretty good at this stuff.
It takes more time, but the payoff is much greater. You don't just end up with a mod you want. You end up understanding the mod you want.

I did some reading before posting, and I could not get my answers after almost 1 hour of surfing over a few pages in different sections. Consider also that I did root and installed custom roms for the last years on at least 10 different phone models. So I'm sure some people here might even have a harder time, understanding some things.
I will respect the forum rules and I apologies for any inconvenience.
Though, it sounds like a very communist rule not to be able to express, what you find as the best rom for you, and why you find it as the best rom, or fit for you.
Wicked v9 just came out. I'd flash that:

Its because it often degrades into a battle between one 14 year old who likes X ROM and another 13 year old who loves Y ROM who start fighting about it.
And if such threads aren't contained early, then half the threads on the forum list become ROM comparison threads and nothing of substance ever gets talked about. (Because such discussion will unfortunately never be contained to a single thread.)
And none if it has any relevance to anything. No matter what reasons Joe has for loving his rom, John might hate it for those same reasons. And you might think they are both nuts because a 3rd ROM is the best one ever.
Again, the ONLY way to see what ROM is best for you is to try different ones. It's the only possible way to make this determination.
And it takes a lot more than an hour of reading. Phone modding is not a quickie change. It's an insanely time consuming hobby that will isolate you from friends and family because you'll start to think dinner and a night out and Christmas and stuff like that can wait because you HAVE to flash the latest update to X ROM RIGHT NOW!!!!! Be careful getting into this...it consumes you pretty quick.

I am on wicked v8 and I do notice it's quite nice much less force closes and system (phone) restarts than I am used to after flashing a rom. Smooth and fast. I am just reporting my experience, I like many roms but this one does seem quite smooth and nice and has a cool installer. But ultimately the choice is yours. I can say most any ROM that's on here and available for download should be working very nicely to be released to the public, and should not have a lot if any errors. They don't let junk rom's release here with loads of errors and bugs.
So they all should work good its really a matter of seeing the features you like best and choosing from that. If you really want to compare roms read the comments made by people who use them in that rom's section and see which rom has the most people saying they love it lol
