My parents are switching to T-Mobile, and that means ill end up with a razr D:
I seriously want to keep my Tilt 2 with Xdandroid on it, so I went to the topic where the link led to a sight where you can get a free unlock code if you're a contributing member.
I obviously haven't posted that many topics on here, so I doubt they'll give me a code :/
Does anyone know any other place I can get a free unlock code? I seriously want to keep my tilt 2 :/

And I'm switching in a few days. I can live without my Tilt for a few days after wards if that's how long it'll take to get an unlock code
Thanks,

hold out...
see if they'll wait till the 19th. rumor has it (engadget.com) that t-mobile is having a every phone in the store FREE day. meaning you can pickup the Touch Pro 2..tilt 2's twin...or even better the HTC HD2 for free. saving them/you a couple hundered dollars.
Seriously?

You see, the thing is though, I've already downloaded so much stuff for xdandroid, and I cant move it over to an android phone from t-mobile :/
And not only that, I love this phone, it does have its quirks, but its my phone, lol

if you can get a free HD2... GET IT... then you'll still have your tilt 2 and have time to get it unlocked when you can to use with the other network.
That said.. doesn't AT&T offer unlock codes so you can use the phone on other networks for free? I thought EVERY carrier had to? I could clearly be totally wrong. I know up in Canada when I was with AT&T I had them unlock every single phone I ever used saying I was going to be traveling over sea's. Now that I'm down in the US I havn't tried that though.
I was thinking about doing that, the HD2 is sooo sexy X.x
I called att telling them I would be going to australia for the summer, and they said they would get back to me on that, but that was about 6 months ago xD

Also, the HD2 is not android, it is WM6.5.
I just got my touch pro 2 and after debating between hd2 and tp2 the keyboard swayed the battle, either way I played with both in store and both are very nice and if the t mobile free phone thing is true I would explain it to your parents and ask them to wait. I wouldn't worry about all the lost customs though because thats part of the excitement of a new phone.

Try again. Usually you have to wait a few months before they'll just unlock it for you. Otherwise this is only $20...

I called AT&T about 6 months ago (in the US) and told them I was going overseas on business and needed it ASAP. I also told them that I was not a customer, but my "company" was and that they would be giving me a SIM to use the "day I left the country". Probably wouldn't hurt to give a fake name too lol.
Bear in mind that I was calm and nice to them (yanno, the whole catch more flies with honey than vinegar type stuff).
I got my unlock code within 10 minutes. And if for any reason you don't get the code then, just call back. If you get the same person again, I'd be highly surprised.
yeaa, if you've been with at&t for a while and had no problems with payments, they should give you the unlock code, otherwise, there are unlock code on ebay for like 20$, and they do work, I used one for my Tilt 2 and Touch Pro 2 (I like the tilt 2 better, its shinyer lol)
Well, what if this phone isn't on my contract?
My phone that's on contract with att is a crappy sony ericcson. I bought 2 blackjacks from my friend because he was switching providers, then I traded one of them for a palm centro, and my aunt came down with this phone and said she wanted to trade because this phone was too difficult and she likes the palm centro better xDD
Would it still work if the tilt2 isn't on my contract?

After several readings of your message, I have decided that your life is WAY to complicated.
Seriously, what you should do is have your aunt put her SIM card into the phone and have her call up and request the unlock code. Or just buy one from this site or ebay.
Ill just probably end up buying it on ebay xD

Exactly what I meant.
All I ever had to do to unlock my phones, was to call and tell them that my brother or sister needed to use the phone and that I needed the code so their sim card would work. I did own the phones for at least a year though.
http://www.theandroidsoul.com/sim-unlock-galaxy-s3-easily-using-the-app-galaxsim/
This app is from a member on XDA, Spock12, and he says that it works on the international Galaxy S3, GT-I9300, but it might not work on the u.s. varients. I was wondering if there was a way to "port" over this application to work with AT&T?
Why not just call at&t and ask for the code?

We did the same for my wife's White SGS3. She really wanted the iphone 5 (tried to talk sense into her but it was of no use...die hard icrap user). So the deal was if she could sell the SGS3 for enough to get the iphone she could. She called, got the unlock code, went to tmobile and borrowed a micro-sim and finished the unlock. I then rooted it, installed SU and Busybox...then we sold it on ebay for almost $700. So now she has an iphone.
Just call ATT and get the code. If they start to give you trouble just tell them you'll be going out of country to Canada for a while as part of your job and want to take your phone and not the crappy business phone most of the time they'll just give it to you along with instructions. If not, call back in a few minutes and get someone different.

Damn. You might wanna log back online again & talk to a different rep. The person that gave me mine didn't ask any questions & even told me that Samsung supplies the unlock codes for all of their devices as soon as you buy it. If I were you, I would try again. You'll eventually get a cool rep that will give it to you.

indeed, just about to update that the int'l care rep gave me a 8-digit code, saying that if I get a foreign micro sim, the device will ask for it and be ready to go. (hopefully no glitches in there..)
Or you could of just searched around here and you would have found the free way to unlock it without having to waste time online. Check this

Actually, yes it will.
Carriers are not gonna go after the users (such as myself) but will definitely go after commercial unlockers, like the store I have bought 5 phones from and flashed 6 phones with. I buy the phones unsubsidized, so im ok, but with a possible $500,000 fine and prison time...I dont think my store will continue doing this.
Going to call them tomorrow and see what they say...
Edit: read the docket...im glad I got my note 2 flashed before it went into effect.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda premium
yea well obviously the people who do it for commercial reasons it'll stop them ..but like me or you or whoever knows how to unlock a phone is probably gonna do it (for personal use)
Problem is for metropcs...you need retailer access to their database. I can
Change everything on the phone but not add the esn to metro's database. So I have to rely on those commercial people...so my note 3 might have to be on sprint...

I get the ruling, but don't fully agree with the logic used. It centered around the cellphone service providers recouping the subsidy costs the give consumers. I just don't get why they needed it overall, especially for the general consumer, since the contracts state if you leave the carrier, you pay a fee; assuming you don't find a loophole to exploit. If that that fee isn't enough, raise it. As far as I know, there is nothing to say it can't be higher based on the phone purchase. Just has to go down over time. My thinking, make it cost the same as buying the phone unlocked.
At the same time, I wouldn't say Sprint makes phone friendly to switch carriers, compared to others who do not have build in SIM cards.
Personally, it's not going to stop me or that many people. I don't believe most people who unlock do it to change carriers. They're more interested in rooting for the ability to use custom firmware on the same carrier or use other applications.
That said, I can understand where people might be one these phones and try to go with something like Metro. I never looked into the long term costs, so I'm not sure how much money is really saved. The wore part is the ability to see the phone to offset the cost of upgrading to newer model because it limits the buyers to only those who want that same carrier. This may drive the prices even lower.
Without more numbers, I just think this more carriers being scared rather than working with each other so consumers are happy and they can make more money by increase the number of users.
Brightspot just launched a couple of days ago, and I see a good price for S3 off-contract - the full name of this phone is "Brightspot Samsung Galaxy SIII Cell Phone - White (T999L)". I'm thinking about buying this device and use it with my T-Mobile sim, but was curious to find out if anyone did the same thing and was successful? Do I have to unlock it... would the data work with my T-Mobile sim...? The reps at Target don't seem to know, or they are not willing to tell me the truth

If it's a t999l it should work straight out the box. If not just unlock
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
It's just a guess, but if it's a T999L, it should be identical to T-Mobile's in every way, including its firmware. Anytime a carrier wants different firmware, they usually give it a different model number.
For example, Metro PCS has the T999N. It is a T999L, only the firmware is different, and doesn't have T-Mobile apps/bloat, but this got it its own model number.
Basically I'm saying it should work with T-Mobile's SIM with nothing done. But, like I said, I am guessing here. If you do need to unlock there are online services as little as $5 out there.

Those are both deal breakers for me. It's just another way the manufacturers can try to dictate how you use hardware you purchased. And to ensure you'll be back to spend more money when the battery dies or you run out of storage.
Anyway, those were both at the top of my list when deciding if I should ditch HTC for this S3.
Sorry for OT, just thought I'd throw that out there!

It is nice to have expandable storage and the option to change batteries. I had the option of the S3 or nexus 4, its obvious which phone I chose. The back of the nexus 4 being glass (fragile glass) was the deal breaker.
The S3 is nice and I've learned quite a few things since I've had it and its a tough phone, I've dropped it a few times and it doesn't have a single mark on it (guess I'm somewhat lucky).
Op if you decide to go with the S3, backup the imei before you start flashing ROMs. There's a few methods on how to do it, you should be able to find them easily.

Absolutely not!!! If its blacklisted it is almost certainly considered stolen property. Plus youd be taking a device that will not work.

I could save up the 70 to buy a nexus 4 their about 150 & the note 2 is just a great device
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk
Ok, but two things I dont think your fully appreciating....its blacklisted so it will soon not work on any network in the US. And its most likely stolen!
But its up to you. There's not much of anything the note2 has over an s3 anyway. Kinda sounds like you already have your mind made up, and just want reassurance maybe? Personally, I just think its an all around bad idea!
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk
Yeah I get that it won't work on any service. I could easily get a nexus 4 8 gb for 150 . the note 2 would be like a big iPod I carry around
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk
I'd still be against it due to the likelihood it's stolen. Have you thought about saving a little more, selling the S3, and use that as a down payment on a note3? Why carry two devices around when you could get everything in one?
Or if you wait you could prob find a similar deal where the note2 is not blacklisted. I've heard about some people doing an even swap since they're so close in performance and features. Like I said though it's your call in the end. You may get differing opinions from others, but I think most here would probably agree with me.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk
Okay, let's see if I have this right. You want to trade a perfectly fine phone (galaxy s3) for a phone that basically doesn't work (note 2) and use it as an iPod, then you want to buy an 8gb nexus 4 for $150?
Why don't you sell your s3 for $260 buy a 16gb nexus 4 for $200-$250, then buy an actual ipod with the $150 you were going to spend on an 8gb nexus 4. All of your devices will work and you'll have an actual iPod.
Its ultimately up to you, but a note 2 really isn't all that. Its an oversized s3 with a s-pen and better specs. I definitely wouldn't trade a working phone for well, a mini tablet. Oh...and its blacklisted, so there is the chance that is stolen, but like I said, its ultimately your decision.

In the very original Ad-post What did the Seller say ? Did he ever mention the word blacklist at all ? Or did he all along said IMEI Unknowm ? Or was it you that concluded based on Unknown IMEI that its blacklisted ?
Eitherway, he can still promptly report the NOTE's IMEI and report it stolen and then you would be at a loss. You have been already given sound Advice by Doc and Da Kine. If you are sorely tempted then Sell your Galaxy on Swappa and go get the Nexus. The S3 is a nice device. I wouldn't trade it for the Note 2. The Specs are not THAT better.
Having said all that, in all fairness, it might be possible the IMEI is lost from bad Flash and a NV Backup may just May Restore it. Would you want to take that chance ? If its not going to be restored, it will be truly an ipod. You could however sell or donate the Note 2 in that case to some Developer here on XDA that will immensely benefit from it. The community will get better more stable code in return.
Think about it. Don't rush to a conclusion due to a chance to get rid of your S3. I bet even Bestbuy will give $70 for a working S3.

Oh so you have already made the trade ? Oh well.
In order to restore the IMEI, first step is to use Root66 Rom and flash it via PC based ODIN and then return the phone to complete stock. Quick search here on XDA under Note 2's forum will help.
If you own this Note 2 now and need help, I suggest posting that device's thread since it is no longer a S3 related question.

The tools we use for the S3 don't work for the Note2. So you'll have to check in their forum for any fixes. Don't expect to get very far very quick though. We are not allowed to post or discuss this information publicly here as it's against forum rules. Too many people seek it out to use with criminal or malicious intent. (I wouldn't expect anyone to be very forthcoming with this info since you don't actually need it yet).
That said, I'm sure there is a fix, I just don't know where or how for anything but the US GS3's. And if you can't find how to do so yourself, you'll end up paying more money to send it to a shop that can fix it.
Imo, this is going to be more trouble and more of a risk than it's worth. As mentioned above, if it isn't blacklisted now, it doesn't mean they won't report it stolen a month from now. This sort of thing happens all too often unfortunately.... it's why most of us never recommend buying used unless it's from a trusted source.
