Absolutely not!!! If its blacklisted it is almost certainly considered stolen property. Plus youd be taking a device that will not work.

I could save up the 70 to buy a nexus 4 their about 150 & the note 2 is just a great device
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk
Ok, but two things I dont think your fully appreciating....its blacklisted so it will soon not work on any network in the US. And its most likely stolen!
But its up to you. There's not much of anything the note2 has over an s3 anyway. Kinda sounds like you already have your mind made up, and just want reassurance maybe? Personally, I just think its an all around bad idea!
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk
Yeah I get that it won't work on any service. I could easily get a nexus 4 8 gb for 150 . the note 2 would be like a big iPod I carry around
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk
I'd still be against it due to the likelihood it's stolen. Have you thought about saving a little more, selling the S3, and use that as a down payment on a note3? Why carry two devices around when you could get everything in one?
Or if you wait you could prob find a similar deal where the note2 is not blacklisted. I've heard about some people doing an even swap since they're so close in performance and features. Like I said though it's your call in the end. You may get differing opinions from others, but I think most here would probably agree with me.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk
Okay, let's see if I have this right. You want to trade a perfectly fine phone (galaxy s3) for a phone that basically doesn't work (note 2) and use it as an iPod, then you want to buy an 8gb nexus 4 for $150?
Why don't you sell your s3 for $260 buy a 16gb nexus 4 for $200-$250, then buy an actual ipod with the $150 you were going to spend on an 8gb nexus 4. All of your devices will work and you'll have an actual iPod.
Its ultimately up to you, but a note 2 really isn't all that. Its an oversized s3 with a s-pen and better specs. I definitely wouldn't trade a working phone for well, a mini tablet. Oh...and its blacklisted, so there is the chance that is stolen, but like I said, its ultimately your decision.

Doc his imei says "unknown" could this be fixed or is it blacklisted ?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk
I don't know. He told you it's blacklisted right? Then he probably tried to clone it to get around the blacklist, which is highly illegal.
I think swappa has a way you can enter the IMEI to see it's status...

In the very original Ad-post What did the Seller say ? Did he ever mention the word blacklist at all ? Or did he all along said IMEI Unknowm ? Or was it you that concluded based on Unknown IMEI that its blacklisted ?
Eitherway, he can still promptly report the NOTE's IMEI and report it stolen and then you would be at a loss. You have been already given sound Advice by Doc and Da Kine. If you are sorely tempted then Sell your Galaxy on Swappa and go get the Nexus. The S3 is a nice device. I wouldn't trade it for the Note 2. The Specs are not THAT better.
Having said all that, in all fairness, it might be possible the IMEI is lost from bad Flash and a NV Backup may just May Restore it. Would you want to take that chance ? If its not going to be restored, it will be truly an ipod. You could however sell or donate the Note 2 in that case to some Developer here on XDA that will immensely benefit from it. The community will get better more stable code in return.
Think about it. Don't rush to a conclusion due to a chance to get rid of your S3. I bet even Bestbuy will give $70 for a working S3.

Oh so you have already made the trade ? Oh well.
In order to restore the IMEI, first step is to use Root66 Rom and flash it via PC based ODIN and then return the phone to complete stock. Quick search here on XDA under Note 2's forum will help.
If you own this Note 2 now and need help, I suggest posting that device's thread since it is no longer a S3 related question.

The tools we use for the S3 don't work for the Note2. So you'll have to check in their forum for any fixes. Don't expect to get very far very quick though. We are not allowed to post or discuss this information publicly here as it's against forum rules. Too many people seek it out to use with criminal or malicious intent. (I wouldn't expect anyone to be very forthcoming with this info since you don't actually need it yet).
That said, I'm sure there is a fix, I just don't know where or how for anything but the US GS3's. And if you can't find how to do so yourself, you'll end up paying more money to send it to a shop that can fix it.
Imo, this is going to be more trouble and more of a risk than it's worth. As mentioned above, if it isn't blacklisted now, it doesn't mean they won't report it stolen a month from now. This sort of thing happens all too often unfortunately.... it's why most of us never recommend buying used unless it's from a trusted source.

its not new if its "blacklisted" its call buying it used, you would not have this problem if you bought it new.
either way eventually tmobile gonna track you down. keep us updated if it work
i also was scamed i bought a amaze from Clist called Tmobile with imei # and thy said it was good.i used the phone for 3 weeks, then i droped it broke the screen and call insurance to get it replaced thy said the phone was reported lost and will not replace the phone. the insurance company had the phone black listed but tmobile did not.
so now im stuck with a amaze with cracked screen that still works on tmobile but is black listed with insurance.
moral of the story is you have to call tmobile and asurion with the imei # before you buy a phone from someone other then Tmobile
Return it and get your money back. You have been scammed.
It seems that this kind of thing is happening more often since T-mobile started blacklisting phones that are reported list or stolen. Also they are blacklisting phones that have been purchased on a payment plan and the owner terminated the contract and never paid for the phone or the ETF.
Good luck

I personally stopped trading/selling phones on cl because there are just too many kids and immature people to deal with. plus now with all this there is no guarantee that you are getting a quality product. Just contact the person and demand your money back. Tell them you'll take them to small claims court. You have evidence from Tmobile and Ashton that the phones were reported lost/stolen. And you were not aware of that at the point of sale.

One way to protect yourself is checking the database at http://www.checkmend.com/us
Ask the seller the phone IMEI before buying. If the phone is not legit you will never hear from the seller.

You can unlock it and use on at&t but unlocking won't let you use it on tmobile tho. Sorry to hear that man I hate when our customers get ripped off like that unfortunately there is no way to unblock it unless you has legitimate proof of full purchase.

FYI for all buying phones from a classified ad.
About 6 months ago before I got my SGS3 I went to buy a SGS2 form KSL.com a classified site here in Utah. When I met the seller in a 7-11 parking lot I told him I was going to call customer care to check and see if the phone was stolen. When I called customer care they looked up the IMEI number, it turned out that the phone was blocked and reported stolen, customer care tried to get me to hold onto the phone and give some detail about the seller that's when the he guy grabbed it off the hood of my car and ran. I found a second phone from the classified ad site and called on it before I purchased and the phone was clear and free to use.
Its just more or less you always have to be weary of dishonest people. It really makes me sick. I just sold my sgs2 on craiglists, and I always try to do good business. I contacted everyone from the phone I was selling so they could see, this was actually MY phone before upgrading. Let him put his sim in, hell, he even could have called customer care if he wanted. Its never good business to try and get over on someone. Karma is a B****!

I thought networks use a "shared hosting service", so when an IMEI is blocked on one network, that info is shared thus blocking it on others.
I don't think it works even with att. The blocked imei database is stored by all the networks providrtd

The problem is... the can report it stolen/lost AFTER selling it to you... so checkiny with customer care doesn't matter. they have something crazy like 60 days after someone else starts using it to report it stolen or lost. So you csn buy a free and clear phone and then 2 months later it will be blocked. The ONLY way to protect yourself is a bill of sale... typed up with the imei number of the phone and everything on the paper.. and signed by the previous owner.. this will prove purchase and save you

They won't unblacklist an IMEI. Once it's blacklisted you're screwed unfortunately.
That's unfortunate.
As I hope I don't get on the same boat you're in, I too purchased a Galaxy S3 off Craigslist, so far everything's fine.
I've spoke to a T-Mobile rep and the IMEI seems clean, they've added a note on the date I purchased it and was transferred to my account.
I'm still scared what happened to you can still happen to me.
OP, to be honest, your idea sounds like it'd work, although it's on you and you have to know it's not the "right" thing to do.
Just unlock it someone using att or straight talk with att sim, save difference.and buy a new one u dont have to worry about being blacklisted,

What don't I understand about this?

He was paying your cell bill while you use the phone?

How many times is this gonna happen. first of all 350 is pretty cheap to sell a phone like this so u should beware of potential fraud. This is why I never buy anything on craigslist there is no protection whatsoever and tmobile needs to take more responsibility and drop customers who do stuff like this

The original owner bought the phone on contract and stretched the payment for 20 months, he sold the phone to OP, the original owner stopped paying his phone bill, T-Mobile blacklisted the phone.
So the original owner probably bought the phone from Wallmart for $200 without needing to go the rebate route, just extending their contract and then turned around and sold the phone for $350 making a quick $150 profit on a legitimately $650 phone. Lame ass fraud there to begin with if you ask me.
Basically you can change the IMEI but the legality of that is unsound or you can just go with another carrier like ATT or whoever else uses sim cards in their phones.

Actually, yes it will.
Carriers are not gonna go after the users (such as myself) but will definitely go after commercial unlockers, like the store I have bought 5 phones from and flashed 6 phones with. I buy the phones unsubsidized, so im ok, but with a possible $500,000 fine and prison time...I dont think my store will continue doing this.
Going to call them tomorrow and see what they say...
Edit: read the docket...im glad I got my note 2 flashed before it went into effect.

yea well obviously the people who do it for commercial reasons it'll stop them ..but like me or you or whoever knows how to unlock a phone is probably gonna do it (for personal use)
Problem is for metropcs...you need retailer access to their database. I can
Change everything on the phone but not add the esn to metro's database. So I have to rely on those commercial people...so my note 3 might have to be on sprint...

Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda premium
I get the ruling, but don't fully agree with the logic used. It centered around the cellphone service providers recouping the subsidy costs the give consumers. I just don't get why they needed it overall, especially for the general consumer, since the contracts state if you leave the carrier, you pay a fee; assuming you don't find a loophole to exploit. If that that fee isn't enough, raise it. As far as I know, there is nothing to say it can't be higher based on the phone purchase. Just has to go down over time. My thinking, make it cost the same as buying the phone unlocked.
At the same time, I wouldn't say Sprint makes phone friendly to switch carriers, compared to others who do not have build in SIM cards.
Personally, it's not going to stop me or that many people. I don't believe most people who unlock do it to change carriers. They're more interested in rooting for the ability to use custom firmware on the same carrier or use other applications.
That said, I can understand where people might be one these phones and try to go with something like Metro. I never looked into the long term costs, so I'm not sure how much money is really saved. The wore part is the ability to see the phone to offset the cost of upgrading to newer model because it limits the buyers to only those who want that same carrier. This may drive the prices even lower.
Without more numbers, I just think this more carriers being scared rather than working with each other so consumers are happy and they can make more money by increase the number of users.

Do the exchange at a T-Mobile store so the can verify the imei and change the phone to your name with your plan. Then the original owner can't claim it stolen.

Someone wants to give you a new S4 for a used S3?
And this doesn't raise any concerns with you? A trade that massively lopsided in your favor has to have a catch. Be careful
Sent from your phone. You should be careful where you leave that thing.

You're the luckiest guy ever! I would do this in a New York minute if I were you! Forget about everyone mentioning that if something looks too good to be true it probably is - I'm sure you've stumble across one of the millions of altruistic cell phone owners who enjoy purchasing something brand new, never using it and trading it for a used, older version of the same phone.
Yep, there's ZERO chance that this is any sort of scam - really! Go do it and then post from your phone in a week or two about how it's turned out for you!!!

Now you'd have to worry about changing your nick.
You should've stayed with the S3
I wouldn't do it. Sounds fishy.

Dang that sucks that you didn't get the $225 offer they were doing a few weeks ago.
I'm just sayin
Like it has been said, ask to go to the tmobile store and have them witness the exchange. If the dude doesn't want to do it then something is definitely fishy. Otherwise it's too good to be true
