OK so here's the thing, I've noticed that when in at college (or school for some) my gnex is on standby most of the day with mobile data turned on even though its 2G area, now I manage to make it home with at least 80% and usually end up recharging it however the peculiar thing is that with WiFi on it drains about 1% per minute at least. Seriously its truly ridiculous, anybody else had this problem or have any ideas on what to do?

Possibly a lot of traffic on your network? Lots of broadcasting happening causing wake locks. All I can think of.
Also what's your signal strength like? Both cellular and wifi.
Cellular wise its always full bars wherever I go and I turn off mobile data when I get home, WiFi wise I'm always on 2 bars in a 60mb connection.
Traffic isn't that high maybe one other person on the laptop...

Is it me or do I seem to always have an issue with data and my phone. There are many times when I go to pick it up to use and the data, either 3G or 4G, is greyed out.
I've noticed it even if I switch my phone to CDMA only.
Any suggestions on how to fix it other than the obvious reboot or airplane mode?
Unfortunately, this might just be reception issues in your area. I have no LTE problems where I live.
That's what I'm thinking. The phone may just not know what mode to chose cause I'm in between the two.
I have to bump this thread. I'm sick of this. I can hardly ever send MMS messages when I'm on WiFi.
I'm not in a 4G area, that I know. I was successful in updating my PRL which I thought fixed my issue, but didn't.
It's not like I have no signal, 1 bar, -90dBm in my house. Even switching the phone to 3G only doesn't fix this. Rebooting is my only option, as turning on airplane mode doesn't help.
Does anyone else have issues connecting to data? I'm tempted to root, just to flash a new(er) radio, but I don't feel like restoring my phone.
Have you tried updating to the new radio?

No. That isn't the solution. Thus is s documented and serious problem. Its on google code and tickets have been opened with Verizon

Whoops! That's what I get for opening up threads in multiple tabs. I replied to the wrong thread.
Haven't tried a new radio, still would have to root it.
As for the wifi sleep policy, it's set to always. I dunno...

Yeah, that was my bad. I had multiple tabs open with different threads and posted in the wrong one.
I live in a spotty 4g area so its constantly switching from 3g to 4g and before it locks onto one signal it always does the stupid grey bar deal and sometimes it won't lock on at all even though I'm in a strong (3g) area. Restarting the phone works sometimes. All I know is that it better be fixed soon or this phone will be going back.

Yup, this is the issue I have. I can have strong 3G signal (all bars grey) but it just won't connect. Airplane mode sometimes fixes it, but I usually have to reboot the damn thing.

Except the issue is... the data won't connect after I disable wifi lol. Hence why it won't even send with wifi on...

We have 4G here in town, but I live on the outer city limits. When I get closer to town I get 4G.
I know where I live sometimes I need to reboot my phone for it to change successfully from 3g to 4g... Another thing people suggest is toggling airplane mode on and off to make it pick up signal

Yeah, I don't know why airplane doesn't work like rebooting usually does.

I thought about taking it in and replacing it.... I don't have any reception issues, just this issue with the phone not wanting to get on data about 50% of the time.
How do I do this?
If its possible. It would let me use data and limit the amount I use while at work lol

While I am not sure directly how much impact there may be I would expect you to see a different, the "4g" (read: 3g enhanced) is a large drain on the battery.
Also the EDGE network is a lot more well distributed across the country which means your phone would potentially spend a lot less time searching for the proper signal. I notice at home my phone swap between the 4g and E icon for short periods at times, which means it's also draining battery swapping between signals.
Of course this isnt an issue at home since I just have wifi on, which also kills my data connection when wifi calling is enabled.
15 hours on 4G vs 40 hours on 2G for me
Nice.

Is there any real benefits for having this on??? all it does it turn on my wifi all the time and drain my battery.
Thanks in advance
Maybe in an lte area, but it is awful otherwise. Number one battery drainer, and even when disabled will sometimes still run in the background

id switch carriers or go outside or get a repeater
Just came from atat which had grade speeds and signal always to come back to sprint cause they are way more affordable... But I knew what I was getting back into... It's not so much sprint its Samsung I made a thread about why all Samsung phones specifically Samsung have bad signal
When compared to a photon or htc in the same coverage area.... I must be in a complete dead zone only luck I had is with atat I've tried every carrier. Even vzw

not sure if thats exactly it, but its a signal booster you can install in your home to get signal in areas you cant.
I just got my gnex yesterday and im on ATT and get slightly better signal, i can actually text sitting at my computer, my inspire i had to hold near the window to send/receive.

When you don't have a stable connection your phone is always scanning for a better connection. So it will use more battery.
You might want to try updating your APN settings, and possibly try using 2g only at your house.
Update!!
In only just 2hr and 10 min since last update at 64% I've gone down from 64%to 14%
Hardly using phone

As someone else said, low signal means the phone works harder to maintain/find signal, which results in more battery usage. I work in what might as well be a faraday cage because of EMI from all of our test systems. If I don't keep it plugged in while I'm at work (or go into airplane mode), it won't last the day, even if I don't touch it.
Find a place with better signal, use a repeater/booster, use airplane mode, or keep it on a charger. Those are about your only options.
Edit: You can also use an app called OpenSignal (free in the play store) to see what tower your phone is connecting to. That could tell you if you just simply don't have a tower close enough.

It's kind of like tethering. It picks up on the signal and "repeats" the signal, except now since you're right next to the cell tower (repeater) you get better signal.

Same here, Houston coverage has been bad for the past week or so. In my house where I used to get like three bars on 4g, now I only get edge. Don't know what's happening here, could it be the refarming thing they got going on?

I hope thats what it is. My download speed hasnt been too bad, 8-10 usually but the upload has been horrible, .3-.5 typically. But compared to the 15+ download and 2-3 upload I got the first couple weeks with the phone its noticable. The biggest problem though is that it seems to randomly just not be connected or want to connect to the net.

i have absolutely abysmal 4g speed around where i live (south san francisco, says its on 4g, geting about 30 kbps down). If i turn on pandora in my car it'll sometimes refuse to play and when I drive to an area where I know there's good 4g speeds, it still doesnt play. The phone says its on 4g but the down/up stream lights never blink, so I have to switch off and on my mobile data to get it working again.
Another incident was a similar issue, but instead it didnt have the 4g icon at all, it wasnt even on edge! All I had in the notifications bar was my battery and the t-mo signal. In this case I had to restart the phone.
