[Q] Can I flash a newer radio on an older version of JB? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I found the radio included in 4.2.1 worked the best for me, but the OS itself was slow and buggy. Can I flash the 4.2.1 or 4.2.2 radios on my otherwise stock Gnex running 4.1.2 without issue??

Should be OK, so long as you have the right RIL as well

How can I check if I have the right one? Is that part of the OS included in the radio.img or is it part of the system???

It's part of the system. Basically, once you've done it get GetRIL from the Play Store and see what it says or download the correct RIL from the RIL thread in Development

Which RIL should I install?

Hello folks,
Reading through this thread, I installed both Radio + RIL
Radio_12.62.60.27_26.13.04.19_M
Zip file md5: 53d9675cd8ca8c970a5f25bc39b3275c

Download: [Multiupload]
Zip file md5: 84d1a0bdd08ca1d55f37e2f94c9a70d3
My DHD went catatonic and for several hours it had everything but GSM (No Service, Baseband Unknown, all that). I flashed (without wiping) the Cyanogen again and GSM was restored.
Now, to my question:
At present, I have
Baseband = 26.13.04.19
RIL = 2.2.0018G
Since the matching 26.13.04.19 RIL in this thread didn't play nice, could someone verify/recommend:
1. Which RIL to use for best results
2. Which method for flashing to use
Thank you all

All of the RILs in that thread are for Sense ROMs and most likely won't work with cyanogenmod (if you're using a recent cm7 nightly there was a change made to allow HTC RILs but I haven't seen anyone confirm it as working here).
I never bothered changing RILs on cm7 anyway, I always just changed the radio and I never had any issues.
Edit: just noticed from your other post that you're using cm7.1 - in that case none of those RILs will work.

Thanks for the clear message - at this point, I am *astounded* at the battery performance of the new Radio. I guess except for the Radio, there is no need to push it with RIL in my case. I have NEVER before seen my DHD survive from 07:00 till 17:00 on a single charge. As at moment of writing, I have 89% battery remaining.
Thank you, XDA, thank you, CyanogenMod - you guys gave me my phone back!

Why?. Could you give details? Actrually Cyanogen´s ROMs use HTC RILs.

Are you sure that this *great* performances cames from the new radio?
Won´t it be motivated by the fact of reflashing a CM ROM again (thus cleaning your system)?

The experimental ability to use HM RILs was added in a cyanogen nightly build released later than the Release Candidate version of cm7.1 that he was using at the time of this post. Hence my original statement that they might work if he was using a later nightly, followed by the edit when I saw what he was actually using.

2.2.0018G works fine here on SCI MIUI with that radio, 2.2.1003G worked alright as well on BlackIce (seemed to drain a little more but I was changing a lot of settings at the time so odds are it wasn't anything to do with the RIL at all).
I never bother changing the RIL from whatever comes with the ROM if I'm on an AOSP base; seems to be largely a waste of time. Unless there's some terrible problem after you flash a new radio which could only possibly be solved by using a different set of interface layer files, just leave them be.

Where can I get the 4.03 update for cdma GNEX?

I need this update as 4.04 wasnt working how I think it should have.

There was 4.0.3 update, and the 4.0.4 update was just a leak (only official for GSM model). The only way to get 4.0.3 is from a custom ROM that was built from 4.0.3 source.
There was never a 4.0.4 leak for CDMA. Only the radio dropped.
4.0.4 is only OFFICIALLY on GSM...but the source dropping means we can rip literally everything from it but the radios on our CDMA version.
Here are two 4.0.4 stock rooted roms.

http://rootzwiki.com/topic/17412-romleak-p3droid404odexdsutweaked-updater-script-thx-to-nocoast/
I can't seem to find any 4.0.3...
But what seems to be the problem that you're having with 4.0.4 that you didn't on 4.0.3?
My issue is volume+ doesnt work.
Just tested.
Works fine with Lean Kernel 3.2.1 stable...as long as the volume increase supposed to be pretty minimal. Never bothered with it before.
Try that?

if the 4.0.4 cdma roms are just official 4.0.4 gsm roms with radios ripped out, what is the difference between those two 4.0.4 roms you linked? also, what radios will I have if i flash one of those two roms in your post? i just got my gnex so i'm on stock 4.0.2 right now. i'm having some issues with my reception dropping and reconnecting after 5-10 seconds quite frequently and i'm not entirely sure what i should be trying to change to remedy the problem.
thanks for the insightful post

I'm not sure of the exact differences besides post date and developer.
Potentially none: Haven't scanned the threads.
These won't change your radios...
Here is a link:
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/12864-radiosgalaxy-nexus-all-available-radiosbasebands/
These can be flashed in CWM.
I personally use the 4.0.4's.

You're mistaken. There was indeed a 4.0.4 CDMA leak back in February (Build IMM30B). I have been running said leak since it hit XDA. You had to be completely stock to flash it through stock recovery and it included new radios and a new bootloader.
The 4.0.4 CDMA radios running around were ripped from that same 4.0.4 CDMA leak.

I had completely forgotten somehow about Axiom...and whatever else...was running off of this leak.
You're correct!

what differences are there between the 4.0.4 CDMA leak youre referring to and the two 4.0.4 roms posted above, if any? is the 4.0.4 CDMA leak youre referring to an update or full ROM like above?
Full rom.
Just not compiled from source.
4.0.4 from source was released much more recently...
And Google provided "hundreds" of bug-fixes with it.
I'd recommend the Google-source base.

quick newbie question i suppose is kinda off topic.. i guess i'd just like some clarification. do the roms themselves contain the radios in them? for instance, if I flashed a custom rom, would my phone's radios be automatically changed to whatever that custom rom dev decided to use in his rom?
additionally, individual radios are also available to swap out without altering roms, correct?

Do I need to be running 4.0.x to run that 4.0.x radio? For example, if I try to run IMM30B, do I need to be on 4.0.4 ROM? also, what do people mean by make sure to check the MD5?
really appreciate all the help!!
No problem at all man.
And no.
Radios are interchangeable.
MD5 checks make sure you got a good download.
For example:
bd63961006aa65e88100017bab2c7fbb
http://synibox.info/synik4l/razorloves/4.0.4Radios.zip
If you download directly on your phone...quite a few applications can verify MD5's.
Root Explorer...Rom Toolbox...Pretty much any file manager.
Most you must long-press the file, and click "properties."
It should pop up a MD5: __________________________.
If it matches, it's safe to flash.
If not...delete it and re-download.
There are also quite a few free MD5 checkers available for your PC if you download on the PC and then transfer.

great will def check before flashing. lastly, my issue is this: i have strong signal where i live (i think its strong anyway, shows up as usually 3bar, never drops below, and a lot of times 4 full bars of 4G) but i notice it just drops all signal for about 5 seconds.. then my bars come back and a few seconds later my 4g bars come back after that.
what exactly is happening to my phone during this process? is this what people are referring to as hand off or is that simply changing between 4g to 3g, or 3g to 2g? is my issue something different, as in just dropping signal altogether?
finally, is there a specific radio you think i should try or could my problem possibly be a ROM problem? i'm on stock out of box 4.0.2 ROM and ICL53F

[Q] RIL Confusion

Hi Everyone,
I'm a bit confused with RIL files and i would like to have some clarifications.
From what i am reading on sense roms needs to be flashed with RILs which i get. I currently have Radio 12.56.60.25U_26.10.04.03_M and i flash the Ril 12.56.60.25U_26.10.04.03_M when i'm using this ROM DHD_WWE_3.12.405.1_STOCK_rooted_by_nitr00. Ok, so for AOSP/AOKP/MIUI Roms i shouldn't need to install andy RILs correct? Just install the ROM and go, right? Also if i do want to try out Sabsa Prime v8.5 is there a new set of Rils that i need to use or do i use the Ril i was using before?
For people who have different brand phones other than HTC is there a Ril alternate that needs to be installed to match the radio or is it flash ROM and go?
Many thanks everyone. This have been stopping me from trialing out different Roms except for modified sense gingerbread roms like ARHD.

Only use RILs on ROMs that are both Sense and pre-ICS. For all other ROMs (like Sabsa Prime, which is ICS) you just flash the ROM and you're good.

Just to make it a little more understandable:
Every Rom needs a RIL;
But in many Custom Roms the Devs already build in the RILs;
The RIL must correspond with your Radio; if it doesnt, you will end up with no Reception;
See the quote below and the the related Thread for more detailed Information.
I just followed the discussion some days ago, cause I wanted to update My Desire HD to the latest Radio, and didn't wanted to brick my phone.
It's always better to understand why things behave like they do, instead of follow some instruction without being aware whats happening.
ShadowPony said:
I don't entirely agree with your statements.
EVERY ROM comes with a RIL. Period. No exception, otherwise the radio doesn't work.
For AOSP ROMs there is a RIL, but have not seen it apart from ROM.
With Sense everything gets weirder because HTC released a new RIL for almost any combination of Sense with OS (at least until ICS, where old RILs no longer function properly)
even with any sense ROM, you can only flash the baseband (radio), and if you have reception problems, then also go for the RIL
also, the latest radio with RIL is: 12.69.60.29_26.17.14.11_M

Right!!
your Rom has the RIL included...
my DHD runs on radio 12.69a.60.29U_26.17.14.11_M also without extra installing RIL...
cause it's included in my ROM by the Dev.

Unless you have a GB Sense ROM, just use the RIL that came with the ROM.

[Q] Question about GPS and RIL

I am using the new Oxygen JB 4.2.2 rom based on CM10.1 My problem is that I can't get GPS working. Any suggestions as to what I can do to fix that. Also will flashing the matching RIL for the RADIO I am using is that recommended on a CM 10.1 rom or not? Will it do any harm if I do flash the matching RIL?
