[Q] Problem booting custom rom after firmware update - HTC One X

Hi all,
As you can see from my post count I usually manage to solve any issues I have with the search funtion but this one has got complicated
I updated the firmware on my handset to upgrade the hboot, I know have 1.36.0000.
Since this though I'm having trouble booting any ROMs. Fastboot and CWM recovery are all fine but flashing boot.img and flashing the ROM from the sdcard I can't get past the HTC screen or sometimes the ROM's boot image. I also remember to erase cache after flashing the boot.img
I have a nandroid backup of a stock ROM that I've used to get the phone working but I'd like to know what's happening! I've tried this thread on getting out of boot loops but not had any luck.
If anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate it or if you need any other info please ask
I believe the handset has supercid but I used the info cidnum: ORANG001 3.16.61.6 anyway
I'm not very experienced with this so am hopeful I've missed something simple
Thanks in advance

This may sound stupid but did you perform a full wipe before installing the rom.zip ?

Hey, thanks for the reply.
I've been over and over the process as I thought it might be something like that, but went through the instructions for each ROM step by step and wiped everything from CWM before flashing
I've done some more Googling and it looks like a lot of people have had problems with non-sense ROMs on hboot 1.36. I'm going to download a sense one and give that a try

Ah oke.....well i know this, if you want to run CM10 you need a modified boot.img ! This one

For the rest of the aosp roms i have no to less knowledge

I think I saw your post helping someone else about a modded boot.img for CM10 - there's no GPS, correct?
Maybe it's time to love Sense again

Yes i believe so, CM10.1 has it working. But yeah I'm always on sense

No I can't get into the phone storage to get it. Where would I get that boot.img

yes you can, go into the recovery and mount the sdcard as a mass storage device....that way its a diskdrive and you can copy out the boot.img file....what recovery do you have, type and version number ?

Thanks for all the advice and help I'll try another rom. :good:

Need a small tut ?
start in the bootloader and flash the boot.img of the rom
unhook the cable and enter recovery (to avoid error messages)
in the recovery you do :
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
advanced - wipe dalvik cache
mounts & storage - Format cache,data,system
then you mount the sdcard as a mass storage device, hook on the cable and copy the rom.zip.
UNHOOK THE CABLE BEFORE INSTALLING THE ROM !
install the rom.zip and reboot the phone.
Good luck mate.....if you need help just ask here again :good:

Hello all...My One X is in a mess. I tried to restore my nandroid back up but my phone keeps bootlooping. Ive wiped dalvik, fixed permissions, etc... and i even fastboot erase cache in cmd prompt. Still nothing. Im charging it now in recovery, but i have no other ROM in the memory to try and flash. I downloaded an RUU for O2 but, i cant even use that because i didnt update my phone prior to flashing ROMS, so the RUU is wrong and i cannot find the older version. Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks.

How do i get another ROM on my phone if my phone wont boot up? I'm stuck. Keeps bootlooping. I cannot find any boot.img for my nandroid backup either.
Hold power + volm down for 10-15 seconds until you get to bootloader screen man... if it doesn't work then you're doing it wrong.

I know how to get into the bootloader. I dont have any other ROM on my phone to flash. I have my back up which i tried to restore but i'm stuck in a bootloop. I dont have the boot.img in my phone for the nandroid.
Just a taught....
I don't know if you changed or upgraded the rom after you did the nandroid backup but if you have a bootloop it means boot.img doesn't match the rom.zip
You also need to flash boot.img with the ADB tools that matches your nandroid backup.
If you are not sure anymore, wisest and easiest thing to do is flash a new custom rom.
I would recommend you >> ARHD rom as they have a Superwipe script as well to clear all fat but leave storage in tact.
Your storage you can reach with Clockworkmod/mounts and storage/Mount USB Storage to copy the rom.zip and superwipe.zip to it.
Keep in mind that you will lose all your personal data like contacts and sms etc, all in internal memory.

[Q] HTC one x USB storage formatted!

Yesterday i updated my one x to jelly bean.(OTA update)
(Australia Voda, S-on, CID- VODAP021, unlocked bootloader, rooted n CWM installed.)
like previous version (ICS), this version wasnt showing one x as USB storage when connected to pc.
so I went to CWM, mounted USB storage and formatted it from PC according to a post..!!!
and now my phone is not booting up.(that is obvious)
plz help me what should i do now?
Re-install the same rom u where using without a full wipe ....
Or where you still on stock rom ?
but how?
i wasnt on stock ROM.
yesterday only i updated it with jelly bean via OTA. and my hboot is now updated to 1.36.
(stock rom was ICS with hboot 1.12 )
and it was OTA update so i dont have that JB ROM now..!!
Can you boot into the bootloader and perform a factory reset ... might help, otherwise we have to find a more intense way to boot it up again !
---------- Post added at 11:02 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:58 AM ----------
And can you do these fastboot commands
Fastboot getvar version-main
and
Fastboot oem readcid
Post these results here please
still not booting up
yes i went in bootloader mode and did a factory reset and from recovery i cleared cache and everything.
version: 3.14.862.27
CID: VODAP021
I have boot.img and firmware.zip for my ROM.
for that lost ROM i have following
I was on jelly bean and exactly for that ROM i found followings after wide search.
boot.img
recovery.img
firmware.zip
is it useful??
I think you need to refresh the system, if the boot.img is untouched......
The recovery is the stock ? If yes ...it's pretty much useless to get the phone booted up.
The firmware is already been used, you have the updated hboot 1.36
I think it's best to go for a custom Rom now to at least get a working phone back and then find a solution to get back to stock
plz suggest any other way..
plz suggest me something. i dont want to use custom ROM. they create lot of problems.
cant i downgrade hboot and install ics again or something else but only official one...!!

You can search for a ics nandroid in the nandroid backup thread by matt95 in the general section ! Search for one with VODAPO021 and software number 2.17.862......restore the boot.img and restore the nandroid backup after a FULL WIPE in recovery .... Then you have a stock ics rom
Or when the 3.14 voda backup is there you can use that one !
Ow and i think i know the answer to your first post, ics has USB diskdrive function and JB uses a mtp file transfer protocol...it's different from ics (USB diskdrive) !
it helped me lil
thanks for replying for the first post.
and yes i got nandroid backup from the post u suggested.
but what about hboot? shudnt it downgraded to flash ics?
and what do u mean by full wipe? using CWM?
and once i can go back to original ics, i will get jellybean ota from vodafone.. rit?
sorry for so many questions. but plz answer to all...
thanks...!

1: Hboot can not be downgraded, but the backup will work fine
2: you are on custom recovery right, you have to wipe everything in there you can except the sd card ! Otherwise different stuff from a rom can interfere with the nandroid restore !
3: yes it should be , you have to flash the boot.img from the nandroid with fastboot commands, do a full wipe/factory reset in the custom recovery and restore the nandroid backup. After that you reboot the.phone to see if it works and then you have.to flash back the stock recovery so it can update the phone to JB properly !
more problems
thanks for quick responses...!! rit now i am downloading nandroid backup and will press thanks button as soon as i succeed...
just now i flashed ARHD 17. but i m facing 2 major problems.
1) sim card is not getting detected..
2) when i press lock switch HTC logo comes again and again.. home screen rarely..!
Certain you did a full wipe, also the caches and dalvik cache, system .... the whole shabbam ?
omg..! dalvik cache clear worked...
thank you sooooo much..
i cleared dalvik cache which i missed previously and everything is working. now i am not in hurry to go to stock rom..
wow..! u solved all my concerns.
thanks again..
No problem mate ! Have fun !!!

[Q] Another noob with a bricked HOX

At the moment it's on a bootloop with the HTC screen, although I've managed (just now) to flash CM10 which is now stuck on a loop of the CM10 Android splash screen
I'm feeling confident that this can be sorted as I can access phone through fastboot/adb and can mount the SD so all isn't lost... I'm on UK O2 HOX
Just looking for a little direction, I used to be fairly confident around the inside of my old HTC desire, but lost interest... Things are rather different with the HOX and I suspect I've maybe screwed up with some misguided bravado...
Mr Hofs has provided some excellent learning material on his responses to issues similar to mine but to no avail...
I've tried a lot of things, bootloader is unlocked, flashed boot.img and recovery.img but when I flashed x.xx.206.x - O2 UK (United Kingdom) firmware.zip with hboot 1.36 it said it failed (with no information as to why)
Just looking for pointers on where to go next!
Starting to become concerned I've made a proper mess...

Additional to this - I've been through 10-12 pages of various fixes (searched bootloop within HOX forum) that's why the above is a little vague... They've all merged into one...
1: what hboot do you have now ?
2: what recovery are you on ?
and put the phone in the recovery in the mean time. it charges the battery there
Are you flashing cm10 or cm10.1 'cause cm10 does not support hboot 1.36.
Recovery is TWRP v2.4.1
HBoot is 1.36
and I'd read that somewhere about not supporting 1.36 and I've just checked it's 10.1 I was trying to flash
Everything sounds good to me.
Try again with my instructions:
1. Flash boot
2. Full wipe
3. Flash rom
4. Flash gapps
It should boot.
Yep....and otherwise the way around ! because i helped somebody on team-V ...it didnt work the way TT described. but actually did work the other way around
in recovery a full wipe....
install the rom and gapps
adb reboot bootloader
and flash the boot.img followed by
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot

Right I'll try these out - If TTs method isn't successful is there anything I would need to be aware of inbetween these two methods? Or are both pretty much starting from scratch? (I hope you understand what I mean..?)

I've expanded on the above steps to ensure I'm completing them correctly
1. Extracted the boot.img from the firmware zip contained within the CM10.1 zip, then ran fastboot flash boot boot.img from cmd line - this completed and reported "OKAY"
2. Full wipe done using TWRP - system wipe - for good measure wiped everything else too (wasn't sure if system was a catch all for the others or not)
3. Rom Flashed using TWRP install cmd (I've assumed this is the correct way to do it...)
4. Flashed Gapps similarly
It's now past the HTC "quietly brilliant" splash (very very quiet just now...) and is stuck on the CyanogenMod splash just circling round and round...
Going to try the other method see if I have anymore luck!
OK... So haven't had any luck with either method...
When flashing the boot.img it's behaving differently to how it did before - it now triggers the phone to reboot whereas it never did before... Is that normal?
Is there any more information I can give you guys that might narrow down the issue?
Thanks in advance!
i would try a stanrd sense based rom ..... just to check its all fine, i have seen more people that didnt get it booted, why ? no clue....
did a proper wipe....factory reset, wipe caches, dalvik cache, data, system ?
then it should work !
Just downloading the stock rom just now, going to try from there... At this point in time I'll be happy to just have a working phone!
Success!
I tried going back to the stock rom but something mad happened with the recovery (i.e. it didn't work anymore) and was replaced with a graphic of a flat HOX with a sync symbol and then the sync symbol was replaced by a red cross...
So had a minor panic, realised that something wasn't right with TWRP, so flashed on CWM, then flashed the boot.img from the stock zip, and flashed the rom perfectly.
I'm tempting fate but I started this process wanting a new rom and I will finish it, but I'm glad my phone isn't bricked!
Thanks to you both for your input, your faith certainly encouraged me to not give in!
Keep up the awesome work!
Well you can always try again to install CM10.1.....again but now with cwm.
I went with viper - which has flashed successfully, but everytime I unlock the screen it comes up with a white HTC screen... haha time to start trawling the viper forum... or go for CM again!
Strange.....tho i have the idea you missed something in the wiping process ?
Funnily enough for a "low stress" option I wiped everything (CWM > advanced > wipe em all) then reflashed the boot.img from CM10.1, then flashed the rom and it's loading into CM10 but repeatedly flashes "unfortunately the process com.android.phone has stopped"
There is something funny going on if no custom roms are working no?
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache partition
Advanced - wipe dalvik cache
Mounts & storage - format cache,data,system
That should do it.....
ohhhhh the mounts and storage one is new to me... I'll try that now with a custom...
Meh didn't work... I'm going to reflash the stock and go to bed I think!

What custom recovery do you have ?
You can download a "new" nandroid backup to restore

Put it in the right folder of the sdcard, flash the boot.img and make a full wipe in the recovery and then restore the nandroid backup

Difficult to say, it could be an issue caused by water damage (hardware failure)
Are you on full stock rom now ?

No not really to be honest. Never had this myself and didn't read up to much on this sort of issue......you can make a nandroid backup now and try another custom rom. Its a long shot but maybe worth a try

[Q] Stuck in boot animation after installing CM 10.2. Usual solutions not working.

hi guys,
i've read about a bunch people who had and solved the problem i'm having but no luck for me. please help!
i updated from cm10.1.3 to cm10.2 via Settings>About Phone>etc. (i.e., without flashing the new boot.img like i was supposed to).
i got caught in the boot animation for over an hour and realized i didn't flash the new boot.img
i tried to manually install cm10.2 like so:
fastboot erase cache, then fastboot flash boot boot.img, then fastboot erase cache again
wiped everything (Wipe data/factory reset, Wipe Cache, Wipe Dalvik Cache, format /system and format /data)
installed the cm10.2 and gapps zips
(i tried repeating the fastboot steps here as well, and also tried "Fix Permissions")
i'm still stuck in the boot animation and don't know what to try anymore i really want to get cm10.2 working. i could use your help
thanks!
EDIT: this might be useful. i tried installing another rom (paranoid android 3.99 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2174855) and ended up getting stuck in its boot animation...
EDIT 2: this might be useful. i was able to manually install and successfully boot up cm10.1.2 following the above steps

HBOOT is 1.33. CWM is 5.8.4.0. are those too low?
Read the thread for minimum requirements, but should be ok.
Factory reset
Wipe cache partition
Wipe dalvik cache
Format cache,data,system
Then install rom + gapps. Got the correct matching gapps ?

i followed all of these steps without success over a dozen times already. following them, i can install android 4.2 roms (e.g., cm 10.1.3) but not 4.3 (e.g., cm10.2)... i figure there may be a clue in there somewhere...
my gapps are the 4.3 ones.
as for minimum requirements, the official cyanogenmod page (http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Endeavoru_Info) doesn't mention anything but it might be out-of-date. i found this other thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2450358) that mentions "datamedia" CWM as a requirement. getting a datamedia CWM for the HTC One X seemed hairy so i got the latest TWRP (2.6) and repeated the process again. still no luck
anymore suggestions?
thanks for the help btw
Maybe hboot upgrade to 1.36 or 1.39 ?

i've been trying to follow your latest advice but i can't seem to find the proper firmware needed to upgrade my HBOOT. i'm following your post here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2221171) but the firmware-download post you link to doesn't provide any firmware for my cid (HTC__621) and googling is yielding confusing results (e.g., 600+MB files of dubious origins). do you know where i can get the needed firmware so i can update my HBOOT?
thanks!
Whats the outcome of

unfortunately not no backups whatsoever. stupid, i know.
Hmm can't find a usable nand either. Guess you are stuck with a older CM for now or try sentinel (hearing good things about it @E) aosp rom, or a sense 5 rom

hmmm. that blows. is the firmware i need not released yet or is it just really hard to find? if i installed a stock rom, would that update my HBOOT? (at which point, i could try cm10.2 again).
thanks!
Well a stock rom (3.14.751) can indeed update the phone (including stock recovery) if it's put indeed. Afaik 751 is at least at 1.36 hboot now ! Will look more tonight, no time anymore now

awesome! thanks! i'm a bit confused seeing as i thought i already had 3.14.751 but i'll wait for your update. thanks again for the help.
Yeah sometimes they push small updates including a hboot upgrade.
Example
3.14.401.27 = hboot 1.36
3.14.401.31 = hboot 1.39
So there could be a 3.14.751 firmware including a higher hboot.

oh ok. i get it now. thanks! at this point, we're pretty far out of the realm of what i know about custom roms so i'll wait and hope you find something with my fingers crossed.
Ah thant to a possible rescue.
You can always try to flash this firmware
http://arhd.onedroid.net/db_mirror/Firmware/index.php?dir=HTC/HTC_One_X/709/
Those have the same main as you have
Edit : link works
