Why did they remove drive letter access and cripple the phone with this MTP crap?
It took me 30 seconds to copy my pictures from my Droid Incredible via drive letter, and now it's taking upwards of 20 minutes to copy them over to the Nexus.
This is completely absurd...

Copying a files to/from my Galaxy Nexus takes no time at all. Much faster file transfer than on my previous phone and USB drive. Have you tried removing the driver and installing the naked samsung drivers?

And yet I'm having the exact opposite experience; on both a desktop PC and MacBook Pro with Android File Transfer, the performance of the Galaxy Nexus' filesystem has been miles ahead of the 8GB Class 10 MicroSD card I had in my previous device.

I can't get the android file transfer to work on my mac. I download the dmg file and drag to applications, but it stil doesn't read my device. Am I doing something wrong? Can you shd some light for me?
And here comes the flood of "im not happy" threads.
You should have known it was MTP before you purchased it. Not trying to start an e-flame but just sayin'.
My connection always messes up, all my music got deleted last night. I'm having trouble copying music over. I'm ditching the stock ROM asap, hopefully one of the custom ROMs has mass storage.
I have to agree, I've hated MTP since the WinXP days when I first hooked up a camera directly. Had tons of corrupted files during transfers so I switched to taking out the memory cards and accessing them with USB readers.
Even now with the nexus I have trouble with files not even showing up properly in explorer but are clearly there when I use a file manager on the phone itself.
I copied a 500mb film from my pc to my phone in no-time. Must be your pc that causes the problem.

I'm not sure why everybody needs to install stuff. I plugged the phone into my MBP and it popped up the contents. Plugged it into my W7 gaming machine and it popped up the contents.
Transfer times were the same, or faster, as they are on my Galaxy S II and Rezound.
Then again, unless it's more than 3-5 files I just use WiFi File Explorer. Fantastic way to transfer files to/from. Definitely worth the $.99 for the full version (demo only allows downloading *from* phone, not uploading to).
It's a trade-off. This way we can use the entire storage space. Just one big partition where all your apps and app data go. No more "internal storage" vs "external storage."

Maybe on your PC.
Everything works fine here with MTP, even better than Mass Storage before...
I love whatever they did. On my Thunderbolt, it would take a long time to copy files, but with the GN, it's as fast as anything! Not to mention I don't have to screw with turning on the phone, turning on USB, doing my work, turning the phone on, turning off USB, etc.
It's always on, available, and awesome!
I find that I have a lot better luck with my windows 7 machine than I do with my Vista machine.

I'm having better luck with the good 'ol console.
adb push has been outperforming MTP for me.
So does MTP mean there's nothing to "eject" and you just pull the plug out of the phone?
Not on my PC it doesn't.

Yes there's no "eject" at all, because the system isn't actually mounted like it is in USB mass storage. Meaning you can still interact with the files on your phone when you're transferring to/from the phone.
I just transferred a 5.00GB mkv file in 16 minutes. That's roughly 5.2MB/sec. *Shrug*.
I'd prefer USB Mass Storage...
Anyone else notice that the pc's volume goes down when the device is unplugged?
I have Pandora playing on Win7 and unplugging the phone causes the volume for Pandora to drop. This is noticeable in the Volume Mixer.
OK, I just don't get it. I've tried different PC's/Cables, etc. I have files/folders (mainly CWM, larger stuff) that will NOT drag and drop onto my PC from my GN. It makes no sense. I can view the virtual SD PERFECTLY FINE, but when I drag and drop, nothing happens. When I try to drag and drop certain things onto the virtual SD, half the time I get told that the device can't be found/has been disconnected.
I mean, this is a HUGE issue that I can't just drag and drop my entire SD Card to make a backup and then transfer those contents back on. What am I missing? I've tried connecting as MTP and PTP, makes no difference. Both of my boxes are Win 7. One is 32bit, the other is 64 bit. On top of that, I was just trying to transfer some data and the ENTIRE Virtual SD got deleted (luckily most everything was backed up). This is seriously borked. I've RTFM for days now and I can't find a solution.
Try reinstalling your drivers even if they installed fine.
Tried that. It's like the only solution is to reboot my PC. I'm fine with doing that, it's just general frustration with not understanding MTP. Is this a mass file header issue with data transfer? Something on my computer's end?
"Copying: 23 Hours Remaining"...from an SSD to Virtual SD
Less than 8 gigs of data. FML
That's odd I've always been able to just drag and drop without issues in W7.
Use Airdroid from the market. It works.
also had the same issue and gave up until i discovered Airdroid. It's also free

I second this. I don't have any problems with MTP myself but for most file transfers it's just easier to turn on AirDroid than retrieving my usb cable and hooking it up that way.

I am so sick of MTP instead of Mass Storage Mode. I run Linux Mint and it's simply painful to try to get MTP working properly like Mass Storage Mode did in GB. Please, ROM devs, answer my prayers.
when you can add a sd card to the phone, you will have your mass storage.
I realize people don't like change, and want to stick with UMS, but you would have to pretty much crush the awesome single partition storage of the GN to get UMS...
Just dont understand why most people are aways want SOME MORE STOREGE, how many stuff you gonna put in your device? A thousand songs or pics?

With UMS enabled, they'd theoretically have lower storage than sticking with MTP. There would have to be at least 2 partitions that would mean files couldn't span across them.
I use wifi file explorer pro. Real easy and just as effective as having mass storage. Was bummed as far as me not being able to connect and drag/drop but when i found this app its just as good.

I can't for the life of me understand this complaint. I have no issues using MTP either in Linux or Win7. Do partition the space up would only bring about all the issues with inadequate space the Nexus One encountered.

I don't know if it's a MTP thing, but I'm having a hell of a time copying .mkv files to the phone. I can FTP to my Thinkpad Slate at 3MB/s via wifi, the GNex capps out at 400KB/s. I've tried to connect the phone via USB to my desktop and just drag and drop and the progress bar doesn't even move. This is driving me insane.
I'm using the latest GummyNex 0.6.6.
If I recall correctly, when I was using Android Revolution 2.1.2, it was copying at 2MB/s via wifi FTP. I guess I need to look into this.

airdroid also works well (ubuntu 10.04 and 11.10 on different machines, also better than mtp on vista for me)
it's been 8 hours and my music is still copying to my phone. MTP is completely unacceptable. it's already told me i had to skip like 30 songs before i hit "skip this message" 2 hours ago. i'm copying ~25 GB of music over and half of that is .ogg which is not natively recognized by MTP. I could have copied the 25GB onto my thunderbolt 10 times over already. I dont care what the reasoning, requirement, or intent was to remove mass storage, but it was not work it. watching my files copy at like 400 k/s to a phone plugged in with a USB 2.0 cable makes me want to return the phone.

Really? I use windows media player to sync my music and it flies. Way faster than my nexus one did. It takes about 1-3 seconds per track.

Drag and drop the files onto the folder icon. Don't open the folder itself and then copy into it.
My problem with MTP is compatibility. Hardly anything recognizes MTP and knows what to do with it besides my PC. Things I used to connect to via USB to transfer files or backup while on the go just don't work with the nexus. So instead of having an all around portable storage device in my phone I now have to carry other devices to perform those tasks, might not sound like a big deal but its just nicer being able to have that ability in one device. MTP may be great for some but not for everyone.

Agreed - my primary OS is linux, I can make mtp work kinda but it's poor and slow.
However enabling UMS would require repartitioning the GN and afaik no one's done it or said they plan on doing it.
Most people find wireless transfer much more satisfactory for this phone - I've only used airdroid but others have set up their own wireless ftp server. There are probably other apps that do it...

So i hadn't noticed until just now. But for whatever reason. After flashing to ICS when i hook my phone up to my pc via supplied Sony cable, My Ion notifies me that "internal and Sd card mounted" well.. thats fine and dandy however, I'm not seeing EITHER on my PC. I've restarted the phone multiple times, as well as the PC. What i'm finding to be even more odd is that Normally when I would click on the notification it would take me to some settings page for mounting etc etc... that doesn't happen.. actually nothing happens when i select the notification..EVEN stranger than that... imo... is that when I turn off USB debugging I now get a "portable devices" section under My computer where i'd normally see the removable drives pop up. Under this section I now see Xperia Ion with a lil thumbnail of the phone and "portable media player" underneath it... WTF [email protected]! Now when i click that i'm presented with my internal storage and SD card... this was so confusing that I thought i'd at least share my experience and frustrations for others.. Clearly everything is working.. just hadn't noticed this change until just now... WEIRD!
le sigh.....I LIED!
so while it does show Internal Storage and SD Card under Portable media Player... however... i'm unable to see ext_card <which is where all my video files from the camera are under DICM... i'm so confused...
when I re-enable USB debugging... the Xperia ION Portable Meida Player icon disappears... even though my phone still says "internal and SD connected to pc"
anyone else noticing this? or perhaps found a workaorund just curious if i'm the only having this issue? mayb due to flashing ICS over stock ATT without wipes?

Not sure why it's happening but on gb I sometimes have the same problem, if I'm lazy I just let it sit there for awhile and eventually my ext card will pop up or I just restart my computer ( unplug first)
Sent from my LT28at using xda premium
but ur saying a pc restart fixes the error for you and your able to see ext_card after restart? b/c i'm not...
another interesting side note to this dilemma is that I can clearly see the folder I want to access via my PC has not been mounted by simply opening any file manager on my ION while it is connected > ext_card what i mean is .. this folder is clearly NOT being mounted when it should be.. correct?
this is quite annoying to have to turn off my ion open the back cover and take out the micro sd and put it in an adapter and put it in my PC rather than just hooking up the cable... really wanna get to the bottom of this as i'm constantly taking videos <large ones at that> and moving them to my PC... this is a must have function for me...
I had this problem after rooting. All you have to do is unmount using your phone - take it out and put it back in. All problems went away.

I don't think that's the case in my situation. I've removed and reinserted the card multiple times and the situation is the same for me.
edit: just tried as u suggested. plugged phone in. = no ext_card. left phone plugged in. unmounted card on phone. removed from phone. put back in phone. re-mounted. STILL no ext_card on PC.
interesting this is happening across multiple OS's
some with root some without...
i know this wasn't like this when i had GB but now that i think about it. i only used it once mayb twice before flashing to ICS....
i'm at a loss for what could be causing the issue

Ok... If USB Debugging is turned on, Windows 7 glitches and will NOT properly read both internal and external cards at the same time... At least for me. To get the internal storage to show up, I just simply turned off USB debugging.
Goto Settings > Xperia > USB connection mode
If "MTP" (Media Transfer Mode) is selected, you "should" see both the internal and external SD cards upon plugging to your PC. This is under the assumption that USB Debugging is turned off. Like I said before, if it's on, I have experienced issues with Windows 7.
If "MSC" (Mass Storage Mode) is selected, regardless of if USB Debugging is selected, your PC should only allow your external SD card to attach to PC. (You can still use ADB commands to access internal storage)
Also, I personally went and uninstalled PC companion, and now block it from install completely. Check the settings mentioned, and see if you possibly missed something. If they all match perfect to what I said, maybe a reflash?
Just to chime in, this is not just a problem with ICS, but a problem in 2.3 as well.

Any update to this? I think the MS MTP protocol is meant to work only with Media player, or something like that.
For me, it doesn't matter whether I have UDB on or not, the only thing that changes the access is changing from MTP to MSC, and then the internal memory isn't accessible. This whole thing is pretty ridiculous.
What I've found to work, so far in Windows, is Android Commander. See's both internal and external memory and allows full access, so far.
Get a file manager app copy the video folder to the root of your SD card. Ext_card is just how the phone differentiates between internal and external and if I'm not mistaken when you plug your phone in and turn on mtm just your phone comes up then inside that should be two folders. That's how it was for me but once I'm out of class ill double check and give you my details for it. What I did notice just as a side note, some stuff I coppied off my SD card from my i777 like pics and vids and pdf files wont show up in the phone. I reformated the card before I put my ion stuff on it and then the old files. Doesn't matter about that though just tossing it out there.
Also debug mode might cause issues. That is under settings> applications >development

I cant seem to replicate this. I have had zero issue with mounting or reading. I plug my phone in and get a separate directory for my Ion. Once I open it I have my two cards showing. I just went in and pulled a video off the internal storage and copied it to my computer with no issue. I have not installed PC companion.
One thing I do like about this device is it cuts out the step of mounting from the phone. You just plug it in and go which is kinda nice.

I don't know about connecting through HDMI port, USB to USB I think it what we're all talking about.
If I turn on MSC, then the External card is visible and editable, but the internal memory become unavailable. When you switch the connectivity over to MSC, it evens tells you this will happen.
So are you saying that in MSC mode, you can access and edit both internal and external memory on your LT28?

Thanks, Airdroid looks great. But for transferring large files, wi-fi is pretty painful. Just for the sake of brutal comparison, I found I was getting less than 1/10 the transfer speed (on video files 300-500mb) over wi-fi. Guess I'll have to get windows running on my mac again...unless there's a way to actually do file transfer over usb on my Mac..? (without cracking open my phone and removing the msd card)
I've run into the same issue myself. The phone is recognized, but nothing ever happens as far as the drives popping up.
Best workaround is to just use parallels if you have access to it...

Another option is to pull the SD card and plug that into your Mac. Luckily I have a PC as well so I don't have to come up with a workaround.
