I'm helping to get some help from the community on this one. I've already received extensive help from a senior member on here but haven't had any luck yet. I have a T-mo SG3 currently running the fantastic Darthstalker rom. I flashed the latest modem and the next thing you know I don't seem to have a data connection (first at E then G). I tried a few things that didn't work, then I check the imei # and it's at zero. I then tried this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1852255 but when I flashed the zip file the message that came up said "efs backup starting waiting to see if unlocked" then " backup skipped not unlocked". I thought that was weird because I thought it was unlocked already or should be. Anyway I don't know if that method would have worked because I could not get past that step. I then started reading here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1308546 but haven't actually tried it yet because I don't know a lot about it. Phone has been running great and still is prior to this. I did not have a backup of the efs/imei prior to this happening but when looking in root explorer there is an efs file in there, which also contains an imei file. My hope is that I am able to restore my imei number and get my data connection back. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
That Synergy zip is for Verizon phones. And it won't help you now because your IMEI is already lost.
You need make use of the IMEI restore thread. It's around these forums somewhere.

Thank you and I'll take a look at that. When you said go back to TW, did you mean stock rom? I won't be able to do this from my current custom rom even though it's a TW rom? Thanks in advance.

Any TouchWiz ROM from this phone. Whether that's a modified version of it or not (I don't call TouchWiz stock). It just makes one step of that whole process easier when you're on TouchWiz since you're dealing with star codes.

To avoid confusing and bricking your phone, just ODIN back to stock. Go here --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1771687
And go to the Back Up and Restore thread mentioned above.

fo.Hey there. I managed to inject the imei back into the phone but am still having trouble with the data connection. It's still showing EDGE. I followed the steps to backup/restore and then get the $G back but it didn't work. I used the method by PeoplesArmy. Are there any other ways to get the 4G back? I'm still on my custom rom, should I go back to stock and see what happens. Thanks in advance for any help/info

I know there's been multiple threads on this topic but I can't figure out how to solve it after reading each one. Here's my story. I rooted it and then flashed CM10 via cwm recovery and everything was working fine. One day later without doing anything my 4g started slowing down and eventually I can't get anything but edge. I looked around xda and found out that i might be missing my IMEI. Sure enough my IMEI was a 0. I tried recovering to a back up but that didn't fix it so I injected it back in via Peoplearmy's method. The IMEI is now in place but I still wasn't getting anything but edge. I tried using odin to flash it back to stock which worked but I still wasn't getting anything but edge. Does anyone know what I need to do to fix this? I have contacted Peoplearmy but he hasn't replied yet and i need this fixed asap so it would be great if someone could help me out. This is the T-mobile version of the s3. If you need any more information please ask. Thanks. I would post this in another place but I don't have enough posts. Relatively new here.
Another victim... Listen man, it's hard to say how to fix this issue. Nobody really knows how people are losing their imei although I think there is a ****ty cwm recovery floating around. If you read through the imei recovery thread there is a ton of people with the same issue as you.

From what I have read is due to cwm. Just flash twrp and you'll be fine. What you can do is just root and keep it stock. At least that gives you more freedom.

I think you need to restore the entire backup, not just the imei. I would also check the imei recovery threads as they would probably have more information that will be more useful.

Just use the goo manager app from the market. If you Odin the recovery it will add 1 count to the ticker. Confirm this way it won't. Once installed give root permissions>select menu>install recovery script(something along those lines) and you should be all good.

Oh, didnt realize he took it down temporarily. Did you make the backup required by it though? Once you have that just pm peoplearmy. Hes been extremely helpful to a lot of people.
Read through his threads while you are waiting for his reply as there is most likely a way to do it manually anyway.

number 1 rule... read the OP and install instructions before flashing anything.
I'm fairly certain the install instructions say make a nandroid back up. If you don't know what that is, you need to do research before flashing.
But if you didn't make one then your screwed. You need to Odin back to stock and start over.
Sent from Pluto.
You should always make a backup of your current Rom within your custom recovery before you flash a new Rom. Try searching on Google for the application Odin that you use on your computer to restore to stock. You need to return to stock to update your profile.

Hello,
So bought my note 2 from amazon, international version, sim free.
So i rooted it and fired a custom firmware on it.
Decided i prefer having the functionality of the s pen and wanted to reinstall the original f/w.
So managed to get an original samsung firmware (BTU) csc.
All is well on it apart from my sim card does not work in it (no service).
works fine in my old phone still.
It doesn't allow me to update it over the air and kies is a nightmare.
So im stuck with a tablet at the moment that I cant update.
I think I may not have the correct original firmware but I dont know how to determine which one will work!
Any input would be appreciated....
Thanks
Dan
You seem to have stumbled upon the problem introduced by Samsung in their newest kernels (they are used in newer ROMs).
The kernels cause IMEI number to not be recognised after flashing old firmware once the new one was installed. The only recourse is to root again and flash back one of the newer roms (Phoenix, Omega or Android Revolution will do nicely) or try to find original Samsung firmware for your region, but it has to be one of DM6, DF1 or DG1 at the end of the name and flash it using Odin.
Look here and remember to match your phone model number as well as firmware region.

Efs partition is where your phones unique identifiers like imei are stored. If it gets damaged or wiped and you have no backup then your phone is a brick, pure and simple.

Try and Flash an official dme6 or dmf firmware as per above poster. If imei is still blank then your phone is a brick.
I don't know why there are so many how to root blogs on the Internet and none of them tell you how to back up efs or why it's critical. It's a complete tragedy.
I've had to restore imei once to save my gs3. Was very lucky I'd flashed an omega rom earlier and the aroma installer asked me if I'd like to do a backup and told me it's important. I heeded the developers advice and backed up said files to drop box. Now I always do it immediately after rooting - all custom recoveries give an option to back up efs.
I hope it's not too late, it's sad for people to have to learn the hard way, best of luck.

Thanks for the heads up. This sounds great but I can't see my region on Dr Ketan's guide.
Could I just flash any of them? Even the Indian one?
I am in the UK.

Well I flashed the oldest note 2 rom I could find 4.1.1 and I have an imei number back!
Still won't connect to my phone network.
I does show networks now at least!
Emergency calls only.
So if I install the new modem on this old firmware would that work?

I'd suggest you backup your efs before trying anything else.
Does your baseband version display now?
If you've already had your baseband updated to the new versions then you can't use it with Perseus kernel. The new modems are interdependent to the new kernels and Perseus hasn't been updated in awhile.
If baseband is newer one then you need an up to date kernel and flashing a newer firmware will obviously address this.

You have nothing to lose at the moment your phone is a semi brick. I think by reading Dr Ketans guide you will be able to get that phone working again. I take no responsibility from the following link but I think you need to give it a go. If you havent backwd up your efs folder than this link may help you. Id say download this latest modem and recovery and again I take no responsibility for your device.

Yes Baseband is displaying now.
N7100XXALIH - Is that newer?
Now Odin hangs on "setting up connection" so I can't root my phone to backup efs.
This is a nightmare...

Okay so this started when I flashed the new Liquid Smooth 4.4 beta which uses a d2lte rom instead of a d2att. Since I have flashed this rom I am unable to get LTE most of the time. When I do get LTE it will inevitably reboot it self. I have tried to go to Settings>Wireless & netrworks>Mobile Networks and change the preferred network type to one with LTE but it won't let me, it stays on GSM/WCDMA preferred. I have flashed multiple roms including other 4.4 roms, a 4.3 rom I know worked before, and synergy with no luck. I have also checked my APNs and they are correct. Is there anything else I can try? Or will I have to go back to stock to fix this issue? If so is there a method you would recommend?
Thank You, and if this has been asked I apologize I searched and couldn't find anything.
I had the same exact issue after installing Liquid. Even had issues on my nandroids with LTE after. The only way I was able to fix was to odin back to rooted stock and then I restored one of my nandroids from a previous ROM.

I was hoping I wouldn't have to do that but figured I would.
As far as using Odin I was only able to find a method which used the I747UCDLK3 version. I'm on 1747UCDMG2 for AT&T, do you know if it is safe to use that version(I know it wouldn't be if I was on the 4.3 firmware). Either way thanks for the help.

I was on MG2 (flashed the zip that was floating around here) I had no issues using odin back to stock. Ill be honest..I do get confused with the bootloaders as far as which you can downgrade or not. So maybe someone with more info will chime in and let us know if im corrector not. I just dont like to give an answer unless im 100% sure lol. But like I said I was on MG2 and odin back to lk3 stock rooted.

Well, I took the plunge and it worked. I was able to restore my phone to stock using this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426 and so far I have lte.
For anyone else reading this be sure to do a factory reset before going back to stock or it will boot loop.
Thanks again.
