[WARNING][You MUST Reset Google Wallet When Switching ROMs!] - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

If you're doing a factory reset, switching to another ROM, or restoring to stock and you're currently using Google Wallet, you MUST reset your Google Wallet app by going into Settings --> Reset Google Wallet in the Wallet app, or you will permanently lock out your secure element and will never be able to use Google Wallet again - you will have to get a new phone!
This is because your Google Wallet app is married to the secure element with a unique crypto key when you first set up Google Wallet on your phone and if you wipe your phone without first resetting Google Wallet, that key will be lost forever, rendering the secure element useless.
Performing a Google Wallet reset will unmarry the app from the secure element and reset it to its original state so that it can accept a new Google Wallet installation when you wipe your phone and then restore it to stock.
I had to get a new Note 2 because of this, thankfully I had phone insurance. If mods could sticky this, it would be great!
Google "secure element has stopped responding" if you don't believe me.

For the naysayers, just because you've never seen something happen, doesn't mean it's not true or it will never happen to you. I just bricked my Note 2 and had to get it replaced under phone insurance. Went from the NoWiz ROM to MA7 stock rooted, wiped the phone in the process (my guess is Wallet stores the crypto key in /.android.secure, which gets wiped when you do a factory reset), installed Wallet on the clean MA7 ROM and got the dreaded "The secure element has stopped responding E00" error. NOTHING could make it reset. At all.
Also, to those who say Wallet stores things in the cloud now - false. Wallet stores its very own virtual card number in the secure element, which is what gets transmitted via NFC when you touch your phone to the reader. That number is then linked in the cloud to your actual credit cards, so your actual card numbers are not transmitted to the retailer. If Wallet stored nothing on the phone, it simply wouldn't work, period. Also, if Wallet stored nothing in the secure element, then it would work without it and not throw the "secure element not responding" errors, so it definitely stores something there, which is why it's important you don't brick it!

We don't know what kills secure element yet.
Sometimes it dies even when you do reset.
Sometimes it dies for no reason at all overnight by itself when you made no change at all.
And usually it doesn't die even when you do flash and/or factory reset without clearing first.
Nice sounding theory but doesn't fit the facts.

Its stored on the clould. Each phone gets issued a virtual card number and that info isnt stored in the secured element anymore

Yeah, I agree. I'd like some type of proof that this is indeed a fact.
I've never had a single issue on either my gs3 or my gn2 flashing or upgrading firmware and being able to use google wallet. Even with the gn2 and Wallet not being "officially" supported. I have a hard time believing any of this is true...it certainly hasn't been in my case. I'll toss my Nexus 7 in there as well. Flashed plenty roms and upgraded firmware...no issues whatsoever.

I agree with the original poster the fact that he received a new phone and now his Google Wallet works is not proof enough? What kind of evidence do you need. My google will never work on my phone no matter what Rom I use. I am convinced I need a new phone to get Google Wallet working on your phone. If you are a nay-sayer why don't you wipe your phone to disprove his theory and then try to see if your Google Wallet works.

What error do you get when launching it? Since google starting storing the info on the cloud instead of the secure element I have wiped 100s of times on my Evo lte and now Note 2. I did it on the Ma5 update and Ma7. When I was on ljc and lk8 I used Vipers tool and I just wiped in recovery and flashed a different rom with no issues. Only thing it says is unsupported device but that can be fixed by disabling super user or hiding root during set up but that still has no effect on the app.

No problem with secure element here.

I have wiped my phone without clearing wallet a bunch of times dumbass. That's what I said. It still works fine.
And as I also said, the inverse also happens. People have lost their secure element when they didn't flash anything or do anything. How would clearing wallet have helped them since they weren't even flashing anything? Should they clear wallet every night before bed and setup again every morning?
My wallet and yours and anyone's may break any time no matter what we do or don't do.
No one knows what the cause is yet. The prevailing theory is completely disproven by facts.
Repeating random unproven ideas is not helping anyone. Learning how to debug would help people.

I never had any problems with my Google wallet when going to different roms just make a back up with tb and send your back up with data to your dropbox so when your on a different rom you can just download your google wallet from dropbox and install with no problems

It hasn't happened to me, so I'm mainly just wondering out of curiosity:
If someone forgot to wipe their device and this happened to them, would a nandroid backup "fix" the problem; would they be able to flash their backup, then reset Google wallet, then then go to the new device?

Since you, admirably, avail yourself of search, I must assume you've seen the same secure element reports I have, and so you have the data. I can't help you with your less admirable inability to deduce from it.
For instance that google doc doesn't say anything about what might brick an element or how to avoid it other than the meaninglessly unspecific "tampering".

I completely agree. Causality has not been determined, and recommending a "fix" without knowing the cause is irresponsible. I've flashed my phone dozens of times, moving from one system to another. I've never performed the steps described in the OP, and my secure element (and GW) continue to run flawlessly.
The potential for the secure element problem exists. That is a fact. But, as far as I know, there's no definitive explanation for the cause, and nobody has demonstrated a cause by replicating the problem.

[Q] Lost Phone - App to locate?

I lost my E4GT after installing the AOKP ICS ROM. I remotely installed an app called Plan B to locate the phone, but I found that it doesn't work with ICS. Does anyone know of an app that I can install remotely through the Play Store that will work with ICS?
I'm feeling quite screwed at the moment. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks killaphatboy. Sprint Family Locator has helped me to determine that it's within 500 yards of my residence. I live in a city, so that's still a wide area to cover, but at least I know it's not destroyed/run over.
BTW, Lookout needs to be installed PRIOR to losing your phone for it to work.

Lol I had a similar experience but unfortunately Family Locator helped me find my wife's phone AFTER I ran over it... Fortunately it came out if the experience with only a few scratches. Even more fortunate is that my wife hasn't lost it sense.
But in answer to the OP I'd say sign up for the free trial of Family Locator to find it and then install Lookout for the next time. Good luck! Hope you find it!
GPS Enable is another good app to have installed when you finally find it. It allows you to enable gps through a txt msg. Android Lost is actually a better tracking app than Lookout and it is also free.

Android Lost looked great, so I took your recommendation and push installed it. But like Where's My Droid, my text commands aren't working. My phone is probably running out of battery power by now, so I better find it quick!
I'm going to continue the search in the morning.
I use Cerberus. It is really nice. It only costs $4 for a lifetime license. It has nice features like being able to hide the app in your app drawer. It can also be integrated into your rom with a flashable zip from their website, I have not tried that feature though. I have it set to take a photo with the front camera and email it to me when the lock pattern is entered incorrectly 3 times in a row. I have some pretty funny photos of my 4 year old attempting to unlock my phone.
I just realized that you already lost your phone. I don't know how I missed that because you stated it so clearly. Cerberus is a great app, but it must be installed before your phone is lost. Sorry for the confusion.
Mystery solved
I found my E4GT....it fell out of my dash when I stopped at a light. I have no idea how it got up in there. Maybe I put it on the dash and it fell down through a hole, or maybe it defied physics and fell on the floor and slid up in there. Regardless, I'm ecstatic to have it back. I can return the new E4GT that I bought to replace it ( yeah I liked it that much).
I'm running Lookout and Cerberus now in case I ever lose it again. I like that Cerberus takes a photo of the culprit if the lock code is entered incorrectly. Thanks to everyone that offered sugesstions.

T-Mobile Data Usage on Rooted S3?

OK, so I have a rooted S3 running the FrostyJB ROM. When I try using the USSD code to check my data usage (#932#), I get a message that my account is not set up for that feature. Also, both the TMO My Account app and the mytmobile website do not show my data usage, although they do show usage for minutes and text messages.
I ran into a TMO store, and they couldn't figure it out but said it may be due to root. Thoughts? I would like to be able to check my data usage, and every time I flash a ROM, it resets the data usage stats on the phone. Very annoying.
Thats weird, both the tmobile apps show my data. I am also rooted amd running frostyjb as well. Whoever told you it was cuz you were rooted is an idiot or just a liar. Even when I was on the 2gb plan it would show

I have the same issue. Haven't had time to really dig into it though.
It may be because we are running JB. Or it could be the MyAccount app. If you look at the comments for it on the market, the latest versions are pure junk and cause nothing but problems.

[WIP] Google Wallet 4.2 Version For Galaxy Note

Heya all... I got wallet to at least run on my phone with a card loaded... All I did was use the 4.2 build of google wallet... Changed my build.prop to that of a google nexus... And I had already linked my card to my wallet on the website prior to installing the app... Worked like a charm... But... Haven't completely tested it yet (hence WIP)... I went to McDonalds and the machine recognized my phone... And my phone said that it had sent the info, but it never cleared... It said to ask cashier to check for further instructions... But... The guy behind the counter had NO clue, and there were others waiting, so I didn't test further... Just wanted to share my experience... Just to let you know I'm running stock rooted...
http://dgrillman.com/filez/wallet.apk - APK File for 4.2 Version...
build.prop
ro.product.model=Galaxy Nexus
ro.product.name=yakju
ro.product.device=maguro
Another thing... Don't know if this had ANYTHING to do with it at all... But for some reason it didn't work the first time I tried to install... But the second time it went through... The second time the only thing different was that I had the back off of my phone... Don't know if it had anything to do with the NFC antenna, or if it was just a strange coincidence...
Ok would I have to remove the current Google wallet? I wonder why no dev has looked into this

I did try to install another version of wallet after I installed the market version and before I installed the 4.2 version... Not sure if that's what is making the difference... Idk... I tried the method in THIS POST first... It didn't work for me... But maybe something I did trying that method changed something for when I installed the 4.2 version... Lol... I have NO clue... All I can say is it works now... Tomorrow I'll nand restore my phone and try everything over again and see if I can duplicate my success... I hope I'm helping :-/

Well I got mine working and card added and ready to use but never got to actually use it at a store. The drawbacks are the no s-pen function and the signal for me.

In reality I can add the card information but google does not allow me to add the card to my device. So that is why it does not work for me. I am just going to reinstall Jellybomb and wait until they make some progress with the Cyanogenmod 10. I had a feeling this would be a waste of time. So the the apk in the original flagged my device as lost and deactived google wallet from my device.

Rooting really worth it??

OK so I rooted all my previous phones with no issues, just wondering running stock this phone is pretty fast don't know how much "faster" it can get. I know all the features rooting can bring like removing annoying bloatware, carrier iq, build props etcc. What else could you do with these roms? With stock I already could do a lot of the stuff I couldn't do with previous phones running stock. I know overclocking, undervolting anything else I missed that these roms provide apart from asthetic looks?
I guess I just wanted the opinion from people rooted to see if you get that "night & day" difference effect that you get when you root

If it wasn't for removing bloat and carrierIQ i would be satisfied with stock. BUT AOSP/AOKP is my main reason and 4.2. The TouchJizz ROMs aren't my thing overall. But i think stock out of the box is great, i have plenty of friends with the S3 that wont let me tough their phone cause they are so happy with it stock.

There are way too many junkwares phone provider put on the stock TW. Even pure TW contains Samsung's junkwares. Rooting will allow you to remove or freeze those junkwares which makes the phone performs even better with better batt life. You can also install a firewall such as DroidWall to block internet access from apps. Block ads with AdAway. Block apps from autorun themselves when certain event occurs such as power is plugged in. There are endless helpful things you can do with a rooted phone.
I'd suggest reading more about rooting, flashing, custom recovery and see what you're missing without root.

Yes rooting is really worth it.
People that I work with have note 2 and s3 and my s3 is much faster and snappier then all of theirs.

Yeah this is one of the few phones that don't come messed up from the box, I would say battery life could definitely improve on jb so I know rooting will help that a bit. Thanks for input

Yeah all those things you stated I already knew, I like the adaway stuff several other apps that can do that too. Also voodoo sound is nice. Voltage control all that.. I'm pretty careful and all but I guess I just don't want to deal with all the hassle. Backing up nv, roms, apps whole nine yards.

My question is i read around forums people stating that triangle away can't take away the tripping counter when you flash a s3 that came with JB already installed out the box any truth?
Just would like to know since I have a long warranty on it just in case.
Also backing up your emei would insure you will get it back if something goes wrong? Because I saw in that forum it was a mixed bag some people could get it others couldn't and had their 4G missing too
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Yes............
Rooting IS worth it, next QUESTION!
Lol
And they have a thread on how to not trip the counter.
And as far as stock jb tripping the counter... haven't heard that but I honestly dont think it will unless you flash a new rom
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
Counter thing is dumb in my opinion. I'm sure there is a work around, Odin back to ICS and then Odin JB then go from there maybe, idk.
Yes, banking up your imei is a full proof plan and use twrp instead of cwm!

Oh okay one more thing backing up. Where you guys backup your roms internal or sd card Which one is more ideal? Just wondering since I never had phone with this much storage. I assume in touch recovery it let's you decide when you're backing up right?

Ideal should be in sd card.
NOTE* always make a backup before you flash anything, I cant stress that enough because it will save your life*
Also do not mess with it while its in your card because it will not boot up. My suggestion is leave it as is
To be honest though either or, it would not be a problem... me, I have it in my ad card

Rooting is definitely worth it. Probably the best things you can do with it is remove bloatware, install an Ad-Blocker, and control the CPU to increase battery life or performance. With the Triangle Away app, you can easily reset the Custom Binary counter for warranty exchanges as I have done a few times.

The is an app called triangle away that resets the counter. If you don't know, don't offer useless advice.
Backing up your NV data is a "fool" not "full" proof plan indeed tho.

When in recovery you can choose where to back up to. I would personally read thru the stickied threads and get some information that has been deemed infallible by the higher ups. Asking basic stuff on a thread sometimes leads idiots to respond like they know something. The info on the stickies is concrete and not opinion based or anything.

Getting a Different Phone

I have a Samsung Galaxy SIII from AT&T (d2att ), and I have it rooted, running task650's AOKP, and TWRP 2.4.1.0 for recovery. It works fantastic, and I love it I have, however, been trying everything I can think of to try and get ktoonsez's kernel to work on it, for the features that his kernel offers. I am having a funky issue, which according to task, kt, and a few others on the boards, is device-related. It seems that my phone, individually, is the problem. This leads me to my question.
How feasible is it to get AT&T (or Samsung?) to replace my phone, based on the fact that there is something different hardware-wise between mine and the vast majority of other peoples?
It seems that nearly everyone who runs this combination of task and ktoonsez has nothing but good things to say, and I have yet to see anyone gripe about the same issues that I have had, and not be able to fix them, usually by a simple full wipe. I have tried to do full wipes with and without letting Google initialize/restore my account. I have tried going back to stock everything, and trying again. I have made sure to turn off Performance Control, so there should be no conflict there. I have tried setting up my phone in its entirety, restoring information, restoring apps with TiBu, and then installing the kernel. I have tried with and without deleting mpdecision. I am following all of the directions posted per OP for both threads, and with the gapps posted by task himself. Nothing works, and I end up in a glitchy boot loop almost immediately after flashing the kernel, even if my phone was running buttery stable before the flash.
I have come up with a couple things to try tonight, but if they don't work, I would like to pursue getting a new phone to replace this one. Is that an option?
You will need to do a warranty replacement through Samsung unless you have device insurance through att. But then you will be paying the deductable on it.
There are quite a few reports of people in ktoonsez's thread that stated they had to return their device and get a new one for his kernel to work. Not sure you searched good enough. But either way, you are not the first to have a device that cant run his kernel. I can assure you of that.

Thank you. I may not have read it well enough Do you mean the deductible through Samsung or AT&T? And ho do I approach the warranty? I know, at least where I work, we wouldn't honor a warranty on something that was used for purposes outside of it's intended use (i.e. rooting). Granted, I don't work for a phone company

It would be the deductible through AT&T if you have device insurance. If going through Samsung, something would have to be a manufacturers defect in order for them to warrant a replacement device. I don't think either company will replace the device because you can't use a custom kernel. So you would need to get creative on your story before you go either route.

Settling In
I don't know if this could be a factor but, you will experience something commonly called a settling in period after installing a new kernel.
I have been through trying a couple other custom kernels for I747 plus all the progression of KT747 releases for TW ICS and TW JB since 9-23 release and have been through two phones due to warranty replacement. On both phones I have experienced significant settling in glitches for a while after flashing KT's or other kernels. These include crashing on boot, frequent screen freezes after boot, KTweaker settings not sticking, etc. These issues are far more extreme on first install of kernel than when flashing a new release to phone that already has kernel installed. First boot after first install can take about twenty problematic boot attempts to start behaving and it can take two or three days before kernel "settles in" and problems pretty much disappear.
In my feeble little mind, I envision the new kernel having to grow neurons into the guts of the phone hardware.
If you want to run this kernel and your phone will basically boot but, is all glitchy, I would say don't freak out. Have some patience, just keep rebooting, and give it time to settle in. For most the phone will straighten out in a few days.
Hope this helps.

I will be doing that In the meantime, any suggestions for how to explain my way into a warranty exchange? I thought about wiping everything, so it won't even boot, and saying that lol
Also, even if I flash back to stock, won't they be able to see that it had been flashed different before?

Just depends on how thorough the at&t rep is. You have to Odin back to stock, triangle away, unroot and factory reset for them not to know at all.

Do not intentionally brick your device. That could be just as bad as leaving your phone rooted when you take it in (depending if Samsung can see any part of the storage). As far as warranty exchange "excuse" that is on you to decide. Follow the post quoted below to help your chance at warranty exchange. This has been discussed quite a bit all over the place.

You know, I've run tasks rom since it was still 4.1 and have always used the kernel provided in his rom. It runs great, and I wouldn't change it. My battery life and everything else is great. I can get 17 hrs with 3 hrs 34 mins screen time and have 20% battery left. I think trying to get a replacement device just to run a different kernel is absurd... just my .02 cents worth

I completely agree. I'm on tasks currently using his underwear kernel provided. I've also tried KT's kernel as well. Yes you can get more customization with KT's and his custom governor, but is it worth it to go through all the hassle to get a new device? I would say no. Like I said I've tried both kernels, I'm currently using tasks underwear kernel, I may try KT's again, may not. When I did before, I didn't notice a drastic difference between the two, esp not enough to warrant going through a device replacement.
Consider this. You are running tasks rom with absolutely no issues with the kernel he provides. Is that not good enough? I know it is for me. His rom is absolutely the most stable rom I've ever tried on any device. Remember it's just a phone. Just some food for thought.
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
Probably right, but i don't always run task's ROM, either. My favorite ROM so far has actually been ParanoidKANGDroid, but I wanted 4.2.1, so I went to task. I'm actually running PACman right now, and for the time being, even his PC is broken

Bricking your phone would be the easiest way to get a new one and I've seen plenty of people accidentally bricking their i747 and getting a new one from Samsung. They won't even check if its rooted or not.

When the s3$ first come out, a lot of people were bricking them. Trying to root or installing an international ROM. I'm pretty sure Samsung staff was aware of that but they still gave free replacement. Some people even got a replacement from att or others carriers for free.
