I bought a Galaxy Note II off a friend's friend yesterday. Loving it, but there's one issue. If I try to update it via Settings->About, I get the error "Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available". And the device's status is 'Modified' in Settings->About.
What can be the cause of this? I got this phone in factory resetted condition, and I've factory resetted it myself as well. So it's unrooted now. I'm not sure if it was unrooted before I got it, or about any other modifications actually.
Can you guys help me here, I just want to check whether my warranty still exists or not. Or did the guy I buy it from do something to void the warranty? There must be some way to check. Because this error is still a mystery according to this 10 page thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1947305), and I'm probably going to visit the service center.
Did you ever root it ?
If not it can't be factory rooted under any conditions.
Go into download mode and check there.

No I didn't root it, but the guy I bought it from might have rooted it and then factory resetted it before giving it to me.

What does this mean? It can't be factory rooted? And what is download mode?
Was it sealed when you got it ?
Also many people report this issue.
And if it was some official store then 1% chance that you received it rooted.
If it was not some official store then return it to the guy you got it from. He'll know what to do.

How bout you try going into download mode.. see if everything is official and binary count is 0 or 1? I forgot
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
Binary counter should be 0.
Turn off your phone.
Then hold home and vol down and power button.

No as I mentioned I got it from a friend's friend, it's around 10-15 days used. So if he rooted it, and then factory resetted it to hide it, my warranty would be void? No way to undo it?

Yep everything seems official, it looks like this one:
http://galaxynote2root.com/wp-conte...nary-counter-rooted-galaxynote2-8-690x366.jpg
So my warranty is intact? What else could be causing this issue of status coming as 'Custom' in the Settings->About?
Some modifications to system partition.

Here's what you do:
You boot into download mode (volume down+home+power) and check. Check every stat and tell them to us. Here are the ones for a 100% unmodified device: CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: NO, CURRENT BINARY: SAMSUNG OFFICIAL, SYSTEM STATUS: OFFICIAL (in your case, system status is likely to not be normal)
Factory reset then flash stock rom then factory reset.

Try flashing back everything stock with its stock rom...

I am No expert so I probably did something wrong, but when i went to unroot mine i couldn't do any OTA updates and got the "your phone has been modified no update for you" message. So i said screw it and flashed cwm and a custom rom.

Recent Samsung phones have this triangle counter in their bootloader that gets triggered when you modify the system. This is completely separate from your rom and it will remain triggered even if you flash a brand new rom because this is done at bootloader level. There are ways to wipe this triangle counter to 0 so that even your bootloader thinks you didn't modify anything.
You couldn't get OTA because your triangle counter was triggered.

I just unrooted my phone, and device status says official. That means its just back to how I got it from the store, and I can get the ota update, right?
When I go to about device and press software update, it will update as if I never rooted the phone, correct?
Pretty much what I'm trying to ask, my phone is back to its full original form, as if I never rooted it, right?

yes. if you have not flashed anything then your back to complete stock however if you flashed any custom rom your flash counter will have been tripped which would require you use traingle away to rest. But if all you did was root your phone with motochopper and have now unrooted it, it should be like stock

Follow this guide that I made if you want to get ota updates again. There's an issue where you probably have to wipe your internal SD. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2336392
In my opinion, to get the latest update just download the official .tar rom from sammobile.com and flash it in Odin... You'll ,together, return to box state and have the most up to date official rom...
Always be careful, read read and read before you do anything...
The flash counter increases every time you use Odin to flash (e.g., a rooted kernel) even if everything else is stock. When I needed warranty exchange a few weeks ago I was forced to use Triangle Away even though I had never installed a custom ROM and had only been rooted.

So a couple of weeks ago, I installed a font app which changes the font. When it rebooted, the device was bricked... So I went through the long and tedious process of DL the firmware and flashing stock to my device then getting my phone back to the original state since everything was wiped... Now I have a problem, I can't get ota updates cause it says my device is modified. And I don't understand cause I'm fully stock!!! Check the pictures out with my phone's info but please help.

Stock ROM and recovery? Reset flash counter?
Good thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2336392
There's no OTA update right now anyway.
Yes it's stock ROM and recovery. And no I did not reset flash counter. To do that, it would have to root again right?

Yeah just root only with CF Auto Root, run TA and go into SuperSU app and choose "Full Unroot" option.
Hey again.. I found some time to do this.. Re-rooted then used TA, went to download mode and it said "samsung official" then went to super su to un-root. After that I went to check in about device and it still says I'm on custom!!! Wtf!

Yes, that's the number one reason for me.
---------- Post added at 07:59 AM ---------- Previous post was at 07:37 AM ----------
I guess one good thing came out of us getting the last 4.3 update, we are ready and didn't have to learn about Knox the hard way.
I tried to use Samsung Knox, at first it was a little odd. But it wouldn't let me log out. No matter what. I put in the right password and it would just send me back to the Knox home screen. I reset my phone to see what would happen. And Knox just keeps opening and opening, not allowing me to do anything. If I let it sit, it just reboots. Making my phone not usable. Wondering if there's a way to stop this?

No, completely stock. Been like that since I got this phone.

In that case, you can try factory Reset from Recovery. If that does not work, then you may have to call T-Mo.
Wish I didn't have to reset since it is stock and all. This shouldn't happen.

Yes true. I knew of this danger. So I steered clear of the OTA. Went for the Rooted Rom instead. If you could get into Download mode, you can try flashing Rooted Version of the same Stock Rom from @Docholiday's Thread.
Please read his instructions completely before doing anything. Never try to flash older version of Stock Rom. You will Hard Brick your phone.
I needed to go back to stock to send back with fault.

Reflash AGAIN same rom . Your baseband did not update and your status remained custom
U don`t need repartition
U must reflash 2 3 times until your baseband get updated. After that factory reset your phone and your status will be Official
