[Q] ESN cleaning? - Sprint LG Optimus G

this is a new one to me.

WHAT IS CLEANING ESN MEANS? IF YOU HAVE SPRINT OR VERIZON PHONE THAT YOU BOUGHT IT FROM
A PERSON AND THERE IS A ACCOUNT ON THE PHONE AND YOU CANT ACTIVATE YOUR SERVICE BECOUSE
OF THAT WE CAN CLEAN IT FOR YOU NOT A PROBLEM,
GIVE US A CALL TO GET MORE INFO.

Probably just cloning a donor phone ESN, which is illegal and something you could do yourself if you wanted to.

Sometimes it happens by accident too.

Yeah but knowing that they fix the bad esn, people there would just buy bad esn phones instead of new ones or good used phones.

I picture this store being run by a bunch of Russian mobsters.

Lmao. Or "I clean your ESN phone, or your brain cleans my bullet, pay me now and take shot of vodka with me" that's the type of place you back out of slowly cuz you're afraid if you turn around you'll get kabonked on the noodle with an empty vodka bottle. like listening to Yakov Smirnov lol

if this ad is for a "legit" but "illegal" esn cleaning service... what they actually do is remove the ESN from the "blacklist". some people can remove it if the ESN is listed as "fraud".. some can clean it if the ESN is listed as "non-paying customer".. and some can do both.
so.. a true esn cleaning service properly removes the "bad" tag on the esn in the sprint system. I suppose a REALLY shady "company" would try to do something like just editing the ESN.. but I'm not sure who would try to pull that off as "cleaning" since you'd know the esn/meid was different than your original immediately. something you'd have to ask about

Well, most bad esn's are that way for a reason and a very good reason. I have heard of clearing the esn before but I think it has to actually be done through the carrier. I'm not 100% sure on that but if I remember correctly that was the only way. If you came across this phone by "accident" you might go in to a store with it and see what they say. I've returned phones before and got discounts and credits.

Shhhhh....not supposed to ask that.
That has to be done by someone at Sprint
As some else said why is it bad, is it stolen? If it is I would return it to Sprint so the rightful owner can have their phone.

Thank you all for your responses I got this evo since I lost it and report it lost and few weeks later I found it in my aunts house so now I have two the one I'm using and this one which is reported lost aka bad esn

If you used insurance they may not have reported to sprint. It may not be bad.
In other country carriers work with the bad esn?

Got screwed...So I got 2 blacklisted phones...what should I do?

Will they work on any other carrier if I unlock them?

its not new if its "blacklisted" its call buying it used, you would not have this problem if you bought it new.
either way eventually tmobile gonna track you down. keep us updated if it work
i also was scamed i bought a amaze from Clist called Tmobile with imei # and thy said it was good.i used the phone for 3 weeks, then i droped it broke the screen and call insurance to get it replaced thy said the phone was reported lost and will not replace the phone. the insurance company had the phone black listed but tmobile did not.
so now im stuck with a amaze with cracked screen that still works on tmobile but is black listed with insurance.
moral of the story is you have to call tmobile and asurion with the imei # before you buy a phone from someone other then Tmobile
Return it and get your money back. You have been scammed.
It seems that this kind of thing is happening more often since T-mobile started blacklisting phones that are reported list or stolen. Also they are blacklisting phones that have been purchased on a payment plan and the owner terminated the contract and never paid for the phone or the ETF.
Good luck

I personally stopped trading/selling phones on cl because there are just too many kids and immature people to deal with. plus now with all this there is no guarantee that you are getting a quality product. Just contact the person and demand your money back. Tell them you'll take them to small claims court. You have evidence from Tmobile and Ashton that the phones were reported lost/stolen. And you were not aware of that at the point of sale.

One way to protect yourself is checking the database at http://www.checkmend.com/us
Ask the seller the phone IMEI before buying. If the phone is not legit you will never hear from the seller.
Which phones are these ???

Sucks that it's pretty much not remotely safe to buy phones from craigslist anymore. I have been doing it for years and always got the latest and greatest cause some idiot had not idea how much their phone was really worth. But with all this blacklisting now at tmobile, i think i am done with that practice .
Sell them to me ???

[Q] Found T-Mobile Galaxy S3

I might be the luckiest person ever. I found a T-Mobile Galaxy S3.
Anyways, can I get in trouble for using the phone? Can T-Mobile somehow track the phone and disable it.
Thanks for your answers.
P.S. The phone has no contact store, so I can't really return it to the owner. The only dialed number is a company.
Go to t mobile store and return it. They will use IMEI to find the owner. If the owner report it stolen tmobile will black list the phone and you may not be able to use it anyway.

I am really surprised at all of the responses from people suggesting yuo should keep the phone or better yet, sell it to them! That is really the worst advice anyone can offer, what the hell are you guys thinking? It's dishonest and kind of sh..tty to suggest that they should keep the phone and hope the owner had insurance... if that's how you live your life, I am hope I don't live nearby you - - Karma my friends - the best thing to do would be to return the phone to any T MOBILE Store - what would you want them to do if it was your phone?
the poor soul who lost his/her galaxy s3 is probably pulling there hair and gouging there eyes out by now... so sad...
If I had found this phone, I would do everything in my power to get it back to its owner. When the owner finally gets reunited with the phone I doubt they would leave you walking empty handed however even if they do at least you know you have done a very amazing deed.
Who knows someday you may lose something and some generous soul will return your lost item to you.
Oh my feelings are hurt by all these strangers judging me online. Why don't you people believe me hehe
I think, I will just keep the phone on for a couple days and hopefully the owner will call
What the hell man, leave the phone in a T-Mobile store.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using xda premium
so if the phone still has a sim card and it works, just return the phone to tmobile and they will track the number and they could see who it belongs to!
do something great, people will do the same to you.
I agree with everyones (some) responses. I found a iPhone 4S with a pink case. I was able to get ahold of the owner (beautiful girl) and she cried and gave me so many thank yous. She offered $50 but i declined it. If i ever lose my baby (gs3) ...I would hope someone would do the same. Return the phone man..
My insurance was canceled....if I were to lose my phone I'd have to pay full price for a new one. I couldn't afford another Siii.
Return it to Tmo as has been suggested. To do anything less is theft.
If it was my phone, I would activate the mobile security app on the phone and track you down and then the police would arrest you for stealing my phone. But that's just me. By the way, mobile security comes free on most t mobile phones with the correct insurance. I wouldn't risk being labeled as a thief, even if you did somehow "find" it.

[Q] Is my ESN bad?

Back in January, I made a post asking about my SGS2 and why it wouldn't turn on. I didn't figure it out so I bought a SGS2 with a cracked screen and replaced my mainboard with it's. The eBay post said that the ESN was clean. I brought it to a Sprint Store to try and activate it but they said it doesn't show up in their system.
I don't think this phone was ever flashed. When I started it up, it brought me to a locked homescreen with a low-resolution wallpaper set and the ROM was still stock. I went into recovery and wiped the data. When I finally got into the phone, I found pictures of a some teenage girl who looked like she couldn't tell a Galaxy S from a Nokia.
So none of this makes sense to me. Is there any chance that this phone will activate?
Thanks in advance!
Maybe it was stolen from a shipment? Idk, that's odd that it didn't show up in the system.

The last owner had it activated fine. Her number is still in the phone and under Network it says "Sprint". The person working at the Sprint Store put in a ticket. Is it possible that they will just replace it?

Doubtful. Let us know what happens.
Something just doesn't sound right about that situation. If the phone did have a clean ESN then there would be no problem getting it activated. I have a feeling the ESN came back with a red flag and the Sprint representative didn't want to tell you.

I did not use the info from my original Epic that wouldn't start.
So the conflict or confusion the phone is having may be caused by this board.
If not mistaken, all the info Sprint looks for as far as there system id'ing should be coming from mainboard.

Means your mainboard - while it says SPH-D710 on the back - may not have been in the Sprint ESN pool.
For example, Boost, Virgin, KDDI, etc. all have separate ESN pools and while they say you can port I have had issues with it.
Does the sticker on the board show SPH-D710 still?
And does the MEID on the sticker match what's on your screen?

I'm not sure and I really don't want to disassemble the thing unless I absolutely have to. I really can't afford to accidentally mess it up and, knowing my luck, something will happen. What I can tell you it that the HEX and DEC under Status in the phone's settings match the sticker that's under the battery and that sticker says D710. When I pull down the notification bar, it says that it's connected to Sprint and the old owner's info is still in the phone. Her e-mail was ********@sprintpcs.com.
So basically, if what you're saying is true, Sprint can actually fix this issue?
EDIT: I did pull it apart and check the board. It does say SPH-D710.

Nope. If the previous owner owes sprint money or the device was reported stolen, the ESN is bad and as far as I know there is no chance of clearing it.

Just quick question

I bought a sprint gs3, under warranty still. I got it off craigslist and was told the ESN was clean. But I was lied too. The phone was reported lost/stolen. So would I be able to replace it since it still has a warranty?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
Doubtful, for all they know you are the one that stole it. Why didn't you meet at a sprint store to verify the end before purchase. You can try to get it replaced but you might be SOL.
Meeting at the sprint store wouldve been best. I shouldve thought of that. But once they said clean ESN I didn't think about it. Oh well. My loss I suppose. Looks like I have a test phone now
