Well, most bad esn's are that way for a reason and a very good reason. I have heard of clearing the esn before but I think it has to actually be done through the carrier. I'm not 100% sure on that but if I remember correctly that was the only way. If you came across this phone by "accident" you might go in to a store with it and see what they say. I've returned phones before and got discounts and credits.

Shhhhh....not supposed to ask that.

That has to be done by someone at Sprint

As some else said why is it bad, is it stolen? If it is I would return it to Sprint so the rightful owner can have their phone.

Thank you all for your responses I got this evo since I lost it and report it lost and few weeks later I found it in my aunts house so now I have two the one I'm using and this one which is reported lost aka bad esn

If you used insurance they may not have reported to sprint. It may not be bad.

In other country carriers work with the bad esn?

Unlocking a lost evo

My aunt found an evo, and wants to use it on her plan. Problem is, it was reported lost. Is there any way to remove the lock on it to put it in service, or is it hopeless. All you Sprint workers out there give me the scoop.

It is locked by the ESN so if there is a way to change the ESN then yes, but I don't think that is possible but don't quote me on that.
Yea I was afraid of that. I think I'm going to get it and use it just for music and such. Hopefully it'll still run wifi

Yeah. Cause returning it to the REAL owner is out of the question. Karma is a B¤™¢H

Closed, as XDA does not assist in removing ESN locks or bars put in place. Returning it to the owner is the best suggestion. You're technically handling stolen goods here if it's owned by an insurance company now...

Evo 4G

Hey guys I have found a Evo4g at work in pristine condition. Could I sell it or is it no good? I see that these Sprint phones don't take a sim card. So I wasnt sure if it would work unless it was purchased from store? Thanks guys!
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA Premium App
I suggest you turn it in to your workplace's lost & found department. An EVO 4G is not a device that people will discard as trash. I'd like to believe someone is looking for it. If it's unlocked, peruse the contact list and make some calls to determine its owner.
posting & replying via the XDA Premium app.
You should turn that into someone, a supervisor...ect. SOMEONE is looking for that phone because...its a beautiful device. Mine got stolen [still don't know how] and I moved hell and high water for that thing. That person will really appreciate, and like dougjamal suggested, if unlocked, use the call log, make some calls to find out who's it is.

Seriously? You find someone else's property and you want to SELL it?!?!
Wow. It is amazing how society has fallen...
And let me tell you something about CDMA....
The phone is linked to the account through the ESN number... if he reports it lost/stolen, and you try to activate it, expect trouble.
Calm down... I found it over a week ago... I did turn it in to my supervisor and they called me up there and did paper work because no one claimed it. Alot of people in and out of plant traveling.... No contacts in it... What else to do?

Well...I guess hold onto it, and ask around for another week...
I would recommend leaving it with the supervisor/manager in the department you found it in, because it'd be most likely that person would turn to them to check. Also it keeps you out of liability if "something happened to the phone."
Yea your probably right. I would want my Glacier. Ima call sprint see if they knows who it is...
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA Premium App
Lol
1. Pull the battery and find the ESN
2. CALL SPRINT tell them exactly what happened especially the policy for your company waiting a week for it's owner to return.
OPTION 2. CALL SPRINT and ask them if the ESN is clear. If it is your in the clear as well.

From the home screen, press menu > settings > about phone at the bottom > status, and it'll list the device phone number. Tell it to the sprint rep and they should be able to direct you to a person from there, also the MEID number if they ask for it.
I was wondering about this a few months ago when I moved over to Sprint. I signed up with the Shift and decided after it had shipped I didn't like the keyboard so I went to a store and swapped it. The guy accidentally put it in my bag still with my Evo box and I didn't see it until I got home. Being the nice person I am I returned it next business day on the "low", incase he might get in trouble, but I know for a split second I was wondering how much I could craigslist it for.

(Q)How does a phone get a bad ESN and what can you do if you have one?

Title says it all

A bad esn is when the previous owner didn't pay their bill or the most recent account is not in good standing.. meaning that the "esn" which is a number encoded into the phone will not be programable to another account..
*** discussing "esn" or "meid" modification is looked down upon here in the forums... because its pretty damn illegal.. so before we go any further into this conversation I'm going to go ahead and help a moderator out and end it. Sorry your going to have to google this one.

Not trying to discuss modification of it. I have a friend that got a evo3d by trading his phone for it. I was thinking of buying the phone from him but he told me the phone was still activated with the previous owner so i didn't want to end up with a unusable phone. I thought if the previous owner disconnected it it would get a bad ESN or I wouldn't be able to activate it with Sprint
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Ohh ok cool.. yeah if the account was left in bad standing (didn't pay bill) then there's a bad esn.. but if they simply ended his contract you're in luck, but it doesn't seem as if they did that.. my advice is to not buy it man.. from my experience its gonna be a pain in the a$s to deal with.

Likewise in Houston. Sorry but I just cannot see T-Mobile doing this. The reality is they still will end up getting money from whoever uses it. (Although I don't see that as the reason though.)

They actually do block IMEI from network. Usually when warranty phones are reported "never delivered" insurance is starting to but not everywhere just yet. Cutting down on fraud

Aside from this being posted in the wrong location...
I bought a "New Galaxy S 4G" on ebay. It turned out to be one that TMO considered stolen.. The story was that a person in Memphis got the subsidized phone on a new contract, and never paid a dime. They blocked the IMEI, never to be used again. Meanwhile the person sold it to a pawn shop, who ebayed it.
In talking with TMO, trying to get the damned thing activated, they say it is their corp policy to forever ban the phone. I do not think this is market or location specific, from the way it was described to me.
this is only for phones that were purchased through a subsidized plan and were defaulted on.
your phone shouldn't be bricked, the sim should be locked out, maybe you need to get into download mode and reflash w.e. rom you had on there, it's weird that they can even wipe your phone or lock it remotely.
i believe the deal with asurion is that you have to tell them you found it, than they will send you materials to send back your phone. i once had a similar situation with my mytouch 4g, but they told me they will send materials to ship back, but they never sent materials, i even double and triple checked to make sure they don't try to pretend that i'm holding out on them, they said they resent the materials. still didn't get anything and they havn't asked for their phone back... so... idk. maybe it might happen to you. just tell them to send you materials to ship the phone back
Happen to me also, lost my vibrant, got a new one, found the old one, and it was still working.

Now I am sure there are ways around it like going prepaid or even using Simple Mobile and of course any other GSM carrier. I could be wrong though.

its not new if its "blacklisted" its call buying it used, you would not have this problem if you bought it new.
either way eventually tmobile gonna track you down. keep us updated if it work
i also was scamed i bought a amaze from Clist called Tmobile with imei # and thy said it was good.i used the phone for 3 weeks, then i droped it broke the screen and call insurance to get it replaced thy said the phone was reported lost and will not replace the phone. the insurance company had the phone black listed but tmobile did not.
so now im stuck with a amaze with cracked screen that still works on tmobile but is black listed with insurance.
moral of the story is you have to call tmobile and asurion with the imei # before you buy a phone from someone other then Tmobile
Return it and get your money back. You have been scammed.
It seems that this kind of thing is happening more often since T-mobile started blacklisting phones that are reported list or stolen. Also they are blacklisting phones that have been purchased on a payment plan and the owner terminated the contract and never paid for the phone or the ETF.
Good luck

I personally stopped trading/selling phones on cl because there are just too many kids and immature people to deal with. plus now with all this there is no guarantee that you are getting a quality product. Just contact the person and demand your money back. Tell them you'll take them to small claims court. You have evidence from Tmobile and Ashton that the phones were reported lost/stolen. And you were not aware of that at the point of sale.

One way to protect yourself is checking the database at http://www.checkmend.com/us
Ask the seller the phone IMEI before buying. If the phone is not legit you will never hear from the seller.
Which phones are these ???
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Sucks that it's pretty much not remotely safe to buy phones from craigslist anymore. I have been doing it for years and always got the latest and greatest cause some idiot had not idea how much their phone was really worth. But with all this blacklisting now at tmobile, i think i am done with that practice .
Sell them to me ???
