Why does it need to be a clean install just to get a boot.img?

Better safe than sorry

Why don't you have a nandroid? https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images Download your image, unpack it until you see boot.img, fastboot flash it, along with a factory reset and cache wipes.

Here you go: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=37307631&postcount=2 it's my flash able zip.
If is not good on your yakju then flash yakju stock kernel from anrkia's kernel thread.

[Q] Stock kernel (FC14) / Rogue kernel (FC07) for ICS

First of based off my post count you can tell that I am new to this so please be kind.
On the Blend ICS thread I have seen (can't post there yet, that's why I am posting here) several people state that it is best to run FC14 on the stock FC14 kernel, but that kernel does not include CWM so in order for me to update to a new ROM I would need to flash back (Odin) to a kernel that does include CWM. Please correct me if I'm wrong...
So, to get off of the stock kernel (no CWM) should I use the [KERNEL/RECOVERY][ICS] Rogue *Stock FC07* (New 3/10/12) kernel for this? Sorry if this is noobish, I only ask because in that thread it states:
Warning-
***DO NOT USE THIS RECOVERY TO FLASH ANY ROM***

so, I don't want to brick my phone and thought that I should ask before I use it.
Welcome!
You'll probably want to read over this thread as it should answer your questions about the brick concerns:
How Not To Brick Your E4GT
Thanks for the welcome, and also thanks for the response.
I guess my specific question is what are they (e.g. bigtoysrock) using as the kernel with CWM support when flashing using Odin so that they can flash a new ROM?

Got your PM. I use This FB21 tar to get recovery back. Personally I dont use the FC07 one, just cause I have the FB21 already.
Thanks so much for your response!
Cheers!

I'll make your life a little easier:
ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1754036
P.s install the deodex version instead of the Odex because the odex wouldn't install properly for me. Unless this is different for you.
Kernel (boot.img) inside zip
Hope that answer's your question.

Put back your device to stock with a RUU, then unlock bootloader and flash a CWM recovery then install the Superuser... you will have a rooted stock Rom with stock kernel.
Or restore your nandroid backup, flash the stock kernel and put in the Superuser.. you will have the same thing.

Why don't you flash it through fastboot? No USB?

I don't need this now, but I know it's the most stable kernel, so I wanted it to flash with all my roms.

You'll most likely break stuff if you flash stock kernel+ramdisk on certain (if not all) custom ROMs.
You want stable, stick to full stock.

I had a flashable zip for 4.1 and it's also on the leankernel forum. So I know it's possible.

please re-read my previous post;
i wrote: "on most (if not all) custom roms".
if using a custom kernel+custom rom, go back to the ROM's included kernel (grab it from it's zip), not to stock kernel.

Help Regarding flashing Modem/Kernel

Hello,
Can someone help me out regarding flashing. I have spent my last 1 hour reading the tutorials and modems etc.
I am fairly new here and I wouldn't want to take risk of bricking my device.
Please kindly suggest me the package I need to install.
I am currently on OFFICIAL 4.1.2 (Sprint).
Please let me know which Modem/Kernel/Recovery should I install? I want to install Packman ROM
Thanks!
You need any ics modem. I like fl24. And to flash your Rom get the el26 kernel. Get the tar version. Flash that in Odin. It's important to download your Rom before you flash the kernel because you won't be able to boot.
