Hi guys ! I hope Im posting this on the right section, anyway posting this on behalf of my friend,
He dropped his Nexus ( still under warranty) into a toilet handbasin which has water in it . He turned it off and took out the battery and cover to let the phone to dry overnight. His speakers weren't working at first , but after a few days, they were fine.
The problem is :
i)Charging is inconsistent now. Phone doesn't charge even it is plugged in , sometimes it does. He have to keep on trying till it says charging AC)
ii)Phone hangs A LOT
iii)Reboot more than usual
iv) Shorter battery life
Question :
i) He wants to return it to Vodafone Australia but not sure if they know the phone had drop into water? Is there a way to know?
ii) Is there a way to fix any of the problem?
iii)(For australians in melbourne) If he can't return it to vodafone, any good service center to recommend?

ii. Try soak in rice overnight. Should be done after the drop. Anyway u can always try. It works on my Nokia .Dont know if it work on smartphone.

Hey thanks ! kind of been a week already . Think it still may work?
Chances are permanent damage have been done.
Put it in silica gel next time, i think it absorb water better, but remember to bake it first before using it.

Think he can return the phone without getting caught? I heard there's a red tape some sort of water indicator inside the phone. Is that true?
Yes there is. If you take the battery out, at the top of the 'slot' that the battery rests in theres a little white piece of "tape", that normally has just X's on it. Not sure what it changes to if it gets wet, but thats how they would tell.

I believe they have it inside the phone as well. I don't have any water indicator stickers on my battery.

It dropped in water, now works pretty fine, but from time to time there is a chaging message on the screen even when it doesn't plugged to the charger. And it draining the battery much faster then before. Is there some ways to fix this problem before I took it to a service center?

Notice the square XXXX inside the phone. Its on the right frame just above the place where the battery is.
My friend checked his, the indicator still okay! sent back to vodafone!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but 99% of the time that indicator is white and BECOMES red when there's water damage. As in, red Xs means water damage.
Edit: After thinking about it and using a bit of common sense, yeah no - red Xs has to mean water damage. I also checked my own phone (with no damage) and, as expected, white indicators. I have the Sprint version so maybe some small, tiny chance it's changed, but neither of mine are X'd and I bought it brand new.
Editagain: Did some research. Apparently my indicators are reverse to everyone else's, but they could still deduce that the problem is water damage - it's not too hard to determine for someone with a bit of hardware experience. I wouldn't get too excited.

This issue started yesterday...I went to plug my S3 (SGH-T999V from Videotron) into the 5V charger and I go this message "Charging paused. Battery temperature too high.". I was like...uh..say what? I hadn't used it for anything else but watching a video (not even HD). After fiddling around unplugging and plugging back it finally charged.
But tonight, same thing, except it just won't let me charge! SetCPU showed battery temp at 80 degrees C (176F)!!! Mind you, I have the phone in a big case (Trident Kraken) but still, I removed the case and opened up the phone's back and it wasn't hot at all!!!
I waited an hour and then tried again. After a minute, same thing. Checked the temp, it was a 51.9C. I left the back opened and touched the battery, everywhere but especially near the contacts and it was fine...not hot at all!
I have stock ROM, stock kernel, but rooted. Of course, no overclock. I merely use SetCPU to put a clock speed limiter while the screen is off.
Anybody here has a clue about what could be going on?!?

At this point I'd say it could be one of two things. Software got corrupted and a factory reset will fix it, or the temperature sensor went bad and it's replacement time.
I'd try the reset and see how it fares. Typically this fixes 90% of problems (as ironic as that is, because we all flamed customer support at one time or another because that was their answer to every problem. And usually still is lol)

That's pretty much what I thought...
For the record I had tried a simple powercycle and it had no effect. However, I powered the phone off for an hour and just rebooted it and now it charges fine...go figure. I guess if it keeps happening I'll do a factory reset but that sucks as I would have about 60 apps to reinstall. I guess I could use Titanium Backup but then again wouldn't it backup the possible crap that's causing this issue? What about purging the dalvik cache perhaps?
Damn it. As I was typing this (after an increase of 4% in battery charge) it did it again...!!!
I just thought of another possibility or two
Bad charger.. or bad battery
Both can cause this I'm sure. Maybe even more likely. The battery could be bad, maybe the sensor is inside it. Sounds logical to me

I had turned the phone off after my last post and just turned it on to try charging via PC USB. Well, only a minute battery temp is at 60.3C (140.5F)! So I'm ruling the charger out.
As for the battery...well, I don't know if the sensor is inside or if it's inside the phone and just interprets data sent by the battery itself. It might as well be in the battery if the NFC chip is inside...
Anybody would know if wiping the dalvik cache could potentially help with this issue?

Well I went to a Videotron store and discussed with one of the agents there about the tests that were done, etc. I quickly gained his trust as, ahem, I actually work for the company as a commercial tech support agent...
I asked him to pull out the battery from his floor demo, which he reluctantly agreed to after asking the manager and we proceeded to test the other battery. Well, guess what? Same issue. Now, as per company policy I had to do a factory reset; tried again after that and again, guess what?
Issue persists.
So we proceeded to exchange the phone.
Neither I or him or the manager ever encountered this issue with any customer...I've googled this and looked all over XDA and never found any reference to a faulty battery sensor...!
One thing's for sure, the sensor is NOT located on the battery itself. By elimination, it's on the phone itself.
Wow that is crazy man. Glad you got it resolved! Least we know if someone else has a similar issue it may be replacement time.

I'm going through this same exact issue right now. Bought a new battery and the problem is still there.
At the store you used a different charger/cable right? Have you tried completely wiping the phone? Which root method did you use?
Oh and THANK YOU for being detailed about the ROM, kernel, etc. It's impossible to help someone without knowing everything.
Went to the AT&T store and the problem was reproduced with no problem. They then directed me across the street to the service department. Went there and the lady couldn't reproduce the problem at all with the battery they had on hand. So now I'm being sent a new battery by mail to try out before replacing the phone. Hopefully a new OEM battery will cure my issue, but I'm not holding my breath. Thankfully the replacement battery I bought off Amazon came with a charger so I can charge and then swap batteries as needed until the OEM one arrives.
Wow this is interesting, as it is only the second case (mine included) that I'm aware of. And I had searched ALOT...!
Can you confirm that you have a T999 or T999V and if you were able to use any app that gives you actual temperature readings (such as setcpu for example)? If yes, what temperatures were you getting?
The battery sensor seems to be in the phone itself so unfortunately you'll have to get a replacement. Factory resetting the phone will have no effect.

Hi, this is a software problem try to use original rom and check re-partition on Odin ... i have the same problem with G70 Samsung Galaxy Player 5
I can't use custom rom because of this problem... my g70 work with cm11 normaly but the software have something wrong.. finally ... prohibiting charge the battery
Sorry for bumping this thread but I have the same problem, could I possibly buy a t999 or i747 board and just drop it in? Unlocked of course. Or can I replace said bad sensor with another, I have an old i9300 board lying around.

The i9300 is a very different device so I wouldn't try using its components. If you have a T999 or I747 then yes you can use either board. No other variant will fit right though.

Samsung battery too high problem fixed
Change charger adapter. Check voltage similarly. Or just don't use the 3.7v adapter at all

I'm on my second battery now, first warped and died.
I'm now getting the battery temp too high issue, even though the phone seems cool to the touch.
I'm bypassing it by *charging my phone in the freezer*.
Not ideal, but I suspect it's a phone issue and not a battery issue as I tried a 3rd battery I had access to it it still happened.
Hola, noob here with a problem.
My rogers captivate glide was behaving perfectly fine one night when I decided to download some large files over wifi. It was also plugged in for charging and I was using some app (forgot the name) to prevent my screen from turning off so I won't lose my wifi connection. I left it like that and went to sleep. Upon waking up, my phone was hotttt , the screen still on but it has faded into a greenish color with scan lines. It was unresponsive and I had to pull the battery. Ever since then, my phone would last no more than a few minutes before freezing and fading into scan lines. I thought it was a battery issue, so I got new batteries but that didn't help one bit. I even flashed the kernel and still no help. I did resets, recovery, wiped caches, took out sd card and sims, stock builts. Nothing worked. I can't connect the phone to the computer or wall charger either. The screen would instantly freeze and fades out upon plugging in the micro usb cord.
Have anyone had similar problems? Did I fried the soc? I don't think it's a problem with the screen since it was perfectly responsive the few minutes it worked. This noob needs helppp.
I've posted a video on youtube but I couldn't link to it, but if you search "captivate glide problem" you'll see a video showing the freezing problem I have. I'm from the US also, so I don't know if I could get samsung to fix it through warranty since the phone is Canadian.
Well I downloaded Modern Combat 3 and that was like about 1Gb and the screen turn off because I didn't touch it while it downloaded, and wifi kept going so I'm not sure why it didn't stay on for you

Idk about the phone so much , but i am computer technician and it sounds like you overheated it, what we might call "burned it up".
The screen symptoms you have described are a dead giveaway, especially the lines
If this was a laptop, I would be sending it off for a reflow .
Typically, the circuit board gets so hot, the solder on the ships melts enough for a tiny bit of separation. This requires a "reflow ", where specialized equipment is used to repair the solder connections.
First, you should to a factory reset , then try to do a warranty claim. (unless u have insurance from your cellular provider, then u might check with that)
*edit, sorry, I missed the warranty part the first time I read ur post*
The next option would be to check with the guys at www.mylaptopisbroke.com
Email them, ask if they concur with my diagnosis and if they can help.
I have been dealing with them for about two years and always been highly satisfied. (They are in NY, I am in TN. I have sent literally dozens of devices to them)
If none of those 3 options work out for you, start looking for a new phone.

Sorry, but I agree with the previous poster, sounds like a hardware issue. Start the warranty process, can't know if it's gonna work til you try it.
Not to try to close the barn door after the horses have bolted, but in case you get into a similar situation with your new phone, there's an easier and safer way. When you're in the WiFi screen hit the menu button and under advanced settings there is the option to keep WiFi on during sleep. Also, as you have found out, be careful with any apps that directly control the hardware.
Had a very similar scenario as the OP described. Went to bed with it plugged in and streaming DI FM in high quality, woke up in the middle of the night by burning myself on the metal back plate. Unplugged it and pulled the battery, when I woke up in the morning after a rather worrisome night sleep I discovered my WIFI would not work unless I was within a foot of the router otherwise it wouldn't get any signal. I assumed the devices internals were damaged and that is what caused the problem, glad to know someone else aside from me has had a similar issue. Best bet would be trying to get a replacement through the warranty unless you have some type of protection plan through your carrier.
I see, thanks guys for the inputs. I had a feeling it's a goner. I can't do the warranty since it's rogers and I'm from the U.S.; bought it off Newegg unlocked without a warranty. So I guess I'm screwed.

I've contacted mylaptopisbroke and they told me that phone repairs have been discontinued until midwinter 2013.
Is there anywhere I could buy a new soc??

I've heard of reflowing oneself by putting it in the oven at 550 degrees for 10 minutes or something. FWIW.
Not sure I'd want to do it myself, not having better information, but perhaps there's something out there some googling will reveal.
I've look at the sites, no captivate glide stuff. Guess captivate glide is not that popular a model. I've read about reflowing, but too chicken to try. I did took took the phone apart but saw that the LED is on the board itself and couldn't be detached; it's housed in some soft rubber feely box. I had a feeling it would melt in the oven.

I've browsed the xda forums and few others extensively for solution of my issue, though to no help at all.
For the starters some numbers and general info:
Phone: R800i Xperia Play, 2.6.32.9-DooMKernel, Xperia NXT v.1.3.
Only default stuff running in the background.
For testing and possible solution, apps I've installed:
Advanced Task Manager,
No-Frills CPU (min. 134 MHz, max 1.114 GHz, smartass, sio),
Battery Defender (Temp 32C, voltage: 3.0V, changed from 4.0V).
I always keep Data, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS off, unless I need them. Brightness is about 30% most of the time, no auto-brightness control.
For solution purpose I've got manual network selection for 2G, usually it is 2G/3G auto search - never got issues with this.
I've got two batteries, stock one and a Tell Me one, both 1500 MAh, both never had any issues.
Today morning (7AM), as usual, I've disconnected fully charged phone from the charger. I haven't noticed a thing that could be off about the phone.
I've went to the work, and around 11 AM I've messaged a little, and then I've noticed a weird thing - phone was very hot and the battery info said that it is on around 30%. Of course, first I've tried was to reboot the device, and lower the maximum frequency of the CPU.
Unfortunately it wasn't a bug or a mistake - phone really had around 30% charge left. I've got a usb cable from a co-worker to keep the phone from dying.
In the meantime, I've tried resetting the phone to factory defaults, tried flight mode, setting everything to off - nothing helped. Also, what's more weird - phone was charging incredibly slow (that might be because of charging from PC USB) when turned off and it still was hot.
I've realized that phone is getting really hot only in one area - near top right corner (place where light sensor is), on the backside, after you extend the phone (there is a little screw there, under 'sticker').
After getting back to home, I've tried charging the first battery to 100% - it completed, using stock charger, but it took quite longer than expected. Discharging is quite fast - 1% per 4-5 minutes. In ~50 minutes I've got 90%. This gives roughly 7 hours of work on battery. In flight mode, with everything turned off, with CPU on 134 MHz.
On a second battery, which I have in right now, I am steadily progressing from 93% to the 0% at the speed of 1% per 3 minutes.
Phone is +2 years old, not on warranty.
Any advice could be really appreciated.
Is it a stock battery or an aftermarket? I had an aftermarket battery once. It had a similar response in my phone. Bought another battery. OEM and solved it.

Maybe it's battery fault.
One of my battery did the same thing (it even got even bigger due gasses inside it). Replaced it and it's working fine.
If it happends on both batteries, maybe it's hatdware issue. In worste case, something inside phone is shortcutted and drainibg current, causing heating. Maybe opening phone and cleaning parts inside could help.

Wouldn't hurt to open it up and using an eraser clean the battery contacts inside phone and on battery itself. Then use a can of compressed air to blast that bad boy.

I've got two different batteries, stock one that came with phone, and a second aftermarket one, which was rarely used - only on long trips when I wanted to play. Both of them couldn't be damaged like that.
Phone never fell on the floor, is always in protective rubber-like 'case' and of course it never even touched water.
Right now heat is strong enough to be a bit painful if you slide the phone out and touch the light sensor area on the backside. I will try to get some torx screwdrivers and open up this part, but I doubt I will find anything. I was wondering if switching back to stock rom could help.
I'm really at loss here since I don't wanna buy new one, though they're cheap right now (about 150$ in my area with 24 month warranty, without any contract), since I've got some holiday plans and wanted to have some more funds. I can go by with the 4-5 hour discharge time if I have a cable on me since I'm working at the office with computers. I can always charge the phone, but knowing that usually I never even fell under 80% after 8 hours at work is kind of bothering.
Have you reformatted the phone via flashing a ftf file... see if that fixes the issue.
Maybe try to use it without battery. Connect charger, remove battery while still powered on, and wait 15minutes (as i recall, it will not turn off). If phone is still hot, then it's not battery related problem.

Actually I've tried this and I've got some results. Phone turns off when it stays this way in OS for a while, so I did that in Boot manager, which I thought won't be affected by OS itself, and I was right - phone stays on, with screen on. Unfortunately, it is very hot in the 'usual' place. So we can root out the possibility that this is a battery issue.I am not quite sure, but also this is certainly not antenna, since it is off in the boot manager, as well as WiFi, BT and GPS.
So could it be that the kernel itself, which must have some module responsible for power management, went crazy? That is just my wild (hopeful) guess, and I wish that flashing will help. Any ROMs that you can advice?

Well, to test if everything is working properly, flash stock firmware with flashtool (even kernel). Test all functions of phone with apps (wifi, BT, gps, 3g, flashlight, tear-front camera). If all works, maybe some chip is overheating.
In that case, if you don't know how to open phone, maybe it's best to take it to service.
If you do know how to open it, first start cleaning enterier. If that don't help, try to power it while dissasembled, and see what chip is overheating and google for it's model to see what it is.

I'm working at IT company, but my knowledge ends at the desktop computers actually, certainly I am not into electronics - I can tell when capacitors on motherboard are starting to go bad, but that's it. Starting from laptops, some parts are to small and prone to damage to be just opening and looking around.
I suppose if the stock kernel won't help, I will seek assistance of some service since they always give some kind of warranty for repairs. Of course, I will keep this topic updated, since there might be same kind of lost soul with the same problem.

When you are on stock kernel, test offline charging too (phone turned off, but charging). So heating problem is only limited to battery-charging electronics-kernel).
Post your results when/if it's fixed, no matter what they are. Good luck

Unfortunately, after flashing to stock R800i_4.0.2.A.0.79.ftf I still have this weird overheating issue and the battery is draining really fast. Seems like this is hardware problem, not a software one, since I tested it in many different ways to no help at all.
I will not let go off my XPlay, as I will visit service and try to repair The Best Gaming Phone to Date, though I will buy a new phone, which will be Xperia S, since I've got my eyes on it ever since I played on my friend's one - Final Fantasy 7 with OpenGL plugin in fpse looked really great, and the controls were fine for my tastes.
When I get the XPlay fixed, I will update this thread, since I like this phone and would like to have it back and running.

My vzw galaxy nexus keeps turning the screen back on as soon as I turn it off, killing my battery at an average of an hr, at most 2... Downloaded an app that tells u which apps are turning the screen on (wakelock) and it says none... App also tells how long phone has been awake vs asleep... I have recently come upon the same problem. Its from a galaxy nexus also from Verizon running 4.2.2 I recently got this gnex as a replacement from a lost gnex. Either refurbished or new the problem starts after I disconnect charger. Have you found any solution?
Sounds like a problem with your USB port.

Yes I tried wake clock but it didn't help. Strangely it happens randomly. I took out the battery for 10 secs put it back in and is working properly. I will wait a while and post back tomorrow morning.

If you've used the app, you should know there's hardly anything random about it. When a particular wakelock has exceptionally high usage, Google about it (can be done from within the app) and get some insight into what is triggering it. Then you can disable/suspend that app/service.

I had that happen on a custom kernel once. Flashed a different one and it was fixed....Doesn't seem like it'll help you though

I had that problem. Try to move that little thing in charging port with something thin, needle or knife. Thats how I solved it few months ago and since then I haven't had any issue. Hope this will help

I think that might fix it. Im still having the same problem, my fix is taking out the battery. I will try your fix and post back later.

My dose it when I'm at 100% battery after it drops below 90% stops doing that

Mine was having the same problem, but I followed the advice of an earlier post by Godra and it has stopped turning on automatically. Basically, I used my pocket knife to clean out under the pins in the micro USB charging port. I also bent it up just a little bit (be very careful not to break it) to keep it away from the metal housing, which is a ground. Something must have been shorting one of the pins to ground (the housing) causing it to continuously wake.

Prying or cleaning the USB connector did not help in my case. Battery charge indicator sometimes stayed on, but sometimes not. Battery drained really fast.
I bought a charging flex connector board replacement (they are really cheap on ebay), watched some youtube videos explaining the how to change the board and when my new board arrived, my phone was fixed in under 15 minutes.
My gnex now holds charge for over 24 hours with moderate use.
With Jelly Bean 4.3 installed and a new charging port, it feels like a brand new phone!

SnooZy Charger turns off the screen on these ghost connections, saving battery consumption by the display. It does not fix the charging issues, but it reduces the battery drain when this happens.

Hi, i had the same problemen as you all, but i solved the problem by remove all the dust from the input of the charger connection from the phone. I think that the dust was maken some kind of shortwire and that that was the reason for it to turn on the screen, after i cleaned all the dust from the charger point in the phone, my problem seems to be solved. Can some one else confirm this?

I happen exactly that, how could you fix it?
Had the same Galaxy Nexus problem with the display switching on sporadically or turning back on seconds after the phone was manually switched off. The display was the number one consumer of energy due to energy statistics even without using the phone. Bluetooth, GPS were disabled and no special apps were running on the phone.
Hint:
The battery statistics graph's detail view logged charging events although the phone was not connected to a USB charger/port. The display was logged as active parallel to these events. So basically the phone thought it was connected to a charger and switched on the display which it normally also does, but since this charging status was repeating over and over, the display wouldn't turn off by itself.
Yesterday, I examined the USB port with a magnifying glass in bright light and noticed quite some fuzz build-up in the port. Otherwise the port looked good and not oxidized or damaged. So I removed the battery and cleaned off the fuzz from the micro USB port. I used a thin thread to loosen the felt-like lint which took me quite some time. Vacuum cleaner didn't work well. Compressed air might be helpful.
What shall I say: The phone charged very well and behaved normal the whole day without any unusual drain and NO pseudo charging events in the battery statistics!
Should this success not persist, I will report ...
